  • In this clip, Helen, a gay, Irish woman, and person in long-term recovery, describes how she dealt with bullying and found the courage to stand up for herself.
Helen moved to Birmingham from Northern Ireland in her teens. She had been profoundly affected by living with The Troubles and enjoyed Birmingham’s social and racial diversity when she arrived.
But a year and a half into her stay in the city, the pub bombings In Birmingham happened. These horrible tragedies cost twenty-one, innocent people, their lives, and injured another hundred and eighty-two people. They left a great scar in the city’s psyche. They also produced a febrile and hostile environment for its large Irish minority.
For three months, every day Helen walked to school, anticipating with dread the beating she knew would receive from a particular school mate. Her accent singled her out, and her classmates were happy to brand her as an Irish troublemaker.
She describes how she found the courage to stand up to her persecutor, and the freedom that gesture brought her.
Helen encourages any young person experiencing bullying to reach out for help.
