I think this is exactly where I discovered Kate Rusby! I'd just parked up my car outside the house; it was dark and cold and then this jolly song came on the radio and I thought it one of the loveliest tunes I'd ever heard!
My family were and are members of the Methodist Church. The choir in the church where I grew up…in Ashton-under-Lyne, LANCASHIRE…sang ‘Sweet chiming Christmas bells’ as a chorus to ‘While shepherds watched’. A delight to hear it sung so beautifully by a Yorkshire lass! Rev. Allan
Lovely to hear this again, I remember when I was a lad in West Yorkshire our local Methodist church choir always sung this version. Thanks Kate, brought a tear to my eyes!
Me and my daughter were there too ... was lucky enough to be 4 rows from the front. Free tickets via a friend who couldn't make it ... how lucky were we !! I absolutely loved it ... didn't want it to end !
Ah fantastic, I was up in the stand at the back unfortunately. That’ll teach me to leave the booking till late ha. Can’t wait to see her again in 2020!
Heard this song and the singer today for the first time on radio Devon. Brilliant and what a crazy incredible voice this lady has. Love it cant wait to buy her music!!
I'm amazed to find this version on RUclips. My mother taught it to me when I was a little girl but I'd never heard it anywhere else. Merry Christmas one and all!
We had a Pre Christmas gig fest which we loved and we had Bryan Adams, Kate Rusby and Kasabian, it was wonderful and we loved Kate Rusby to bits with her christmas special. Brilliant.
@hunter636 Couldn't agree more. I saw Kate on BBC Breakfast TV yesterday - I wasn't even really paying attention until I heard her sing. What a beautiful voice and what a charming young woman. And I thought I didn't like folk singers!
@17redheadsrock Thanks for that - I'd heard a snippet of what they said, but was distracted from it by conversation from friends. I'd be fascinated to know how old it is, how it evolved, etc. - not least because I used to do English country dance, and it very much has that feel to it. xx
@ravenwolf68 I think this is the Sheffield version of the song from what they said on Songs of Praise--- apparently in that area very different versions of Christmas carols are sung from the traditional tune...
Amazing. Saw this on 'Songs of Praise' yesterday and had to find it. Does anyone know the history of the tune? (Not 'While Shepherds', that's easy enough to find, but this particular version)?
What is Songs of Praise? Is it a program or a CD or what? Thanks for clarifying. By the way, this is stuck in my head and even though it is August and soon to be 90 degrees out, I have to keep coming here to listen to this, when i am not listening to the CD in my CD player! :)
Love it.
Used to be played when I did my primary school nativity plays, when Christmas truly was magical. I hate growing up!!
This should be added to all festive CD compilations, absolutely life affirming!❤ 👍
Just discovered her, this popped up on a radio 3 mixtape, beautiful!

She’s wonderful
I envy you - you have so much to look forward to. Enjoy listening to The Queen of Folk.
Brilliant. So much better than the X Factor rubbish that clogs up the chart at Christmas.

Wonderful song! I get tired of all the canned Christmas music you usually hear over and over. This goes on my top 10 Christmas songs list.
