I never drink ex bourbon alongside ex sherry whiskies but this vPub made me think about doing it for a new experience. I’d like to see Roy do this again without having to worry about the OSWA voting.
I know - be interesting to see how the line up would change with no restrictions eh? Still, glad I was able to pick other things to topic through while the OSWAs are still active. Cheers Carlos!
Had to bail half way as an early start for work next day. Caught the 2nd half listening on the drive into work this morning. Such a great listen for a Friday morning commute and I need to do that more often. Makes a cold dark 6am drive much more enjoyable :-) . Spot on with comments regarding Signatory and I am enjoying several of their bottles. Demolishing the recent Speyside (M) currently, is it amazing? No, But its a fantastic session drinker for £45. Favourite so far has been the Glentauchers, but struggled to get on with the Auchriosk.. I will continue to buy these and if theres one I dont get on with that much, that will be ok, as I didnt spend more than £45.. Enjoy your October break with the family. We have a week near Aviemore with the kids which Im thoroughly looking forward to,
At £45, that Mac from SV at 13yo and oloroso cask makes it a terrific shelf bottle and a great thing to have as a gift. Cheers Alasdair and thanks for picking up podcast style!
Catching up on a Saturday night..I so wish I could have been in live with this one. I'm Sherry cask all the way and really enjoyed the comparisons. That Clydeside sherry is on my must buy list. Pick of the evening for me is that Speyburn 18,a fantastic dram !! I'm back in the UK in 2 weeks and have a bottle of Vins Glasgow PX waiting for me. "More.power to your sherry" !!! 😁 All the best from Bielefeld in Germany 👍
In line with the theme I faced off Dalwhinnie 15 and Balvenie 15. Both of these I cracked years ago and I reach past them all they time (the ignored in my cabinet), but tonight got to fall in love with them all over again. Great topic thank you
Great topic, always #TeamSherry but, as you pointed out, I now not only enjoy bourbon matured dramsI am actively seeking them out, mood dependant., for a change of pace.....at least until someone says Madeira.
Another #TeamSherry here, I find a lot of bourbon-cask Speysides (for example) that people rave about to be boring, but it’s always nice to change things up now and again and I’d say the Classic Laddie is one of my favourite ex-bourbons that has a lot going on rather than being “generic”.
@@elduderino3120 I remember feeling the same, some indeed are a bit straightforward and broing... but some are beautiful. Aultmore 12 would be a great start... just saying.
Yeah, I try and keep an open mind, and there are bourbon cask whiskies I love - I realised I have an unopened Arran 10 on the shelf but didn’t give that as an example (OSWA Trifecta effect?) - I just tend to be into Sherry casked more, especially Sherry+peat. In fact I’d say it’s rare that I *don’t* like sherried Scotch. It’s rarely “meh” for me.
Another interesting vPub. Love the analytic side of the topics. I tend to lean towards bourbon casks but the vating and marrying between the both types is the best. However, I tend to love all lightly coloured peaty whiskies. Slainte and have a good whisky and barfly weekend.
Another interesting vPub and topic, thanks Roy! Some barflies mentioned in the chat that they prefer sherry casks during colder months and bourbon casks when it is warmer. I'm the same. A couple of months ago I was drinking more sherry cask and peated whisky, now we're in spring and it's about 50/50 but will most likely start to drink more bourbon cask whiskies soon. Can't believe the price you are getting Deanston 18 for. It is over £100 here. Got 10/10 on the quiz. Cheers!
Great vpub Roy. I have more sherried bottles than bourbon, but recently ive just been craving the maltiness and tropical fuits of bourbon. Just want something fresher. Youve given me some great ideas for next bottles here cheers!
It was a superb VPub, Roy! Cheers I do love both types of whiskies. :) The most important aspect for me when choosing a whisky is the complexity of the taste and how long the finish is. That's why it's so good to read the reviews on Dramface - they give you an idea of what to expect from the whisky. I have two gems in my collection at home, one aged in sherry casks and the other ex-bourbon. I wonder what extra experience I will get from them in the end. I just tried a week ago AnCnoc 18yo, it was fantastic with a medium to long finish. I liked the sherry cask influence, but if I want to be honest I like the sherry influence more with peat - In my opinion, it gives a deeper, more balanced taste to it in most of the cases. Also last week in the same bar in Budapest we tried Ardnamurchan 2017 Octave Refill PX Single Cask (#449), it was magically strange and superb, and the peat was a perfect fit for it.
Could be true, but often the labelling is a 'cover all' and they reserve the right to use colour for batch correction. It would indeed be a shame if it was, it doesn't suffer too much if it is the case and I'll suggest it's lightly used. Cheers to the Germans for making sense on the declarations!
Here is Seattle, Glenmorangie 10 was previously priced at $44.99 after tax at Total Wine; now, 2 months later, the Glenmorangie 12 is priced at $69.85 after tax. 🤡
I was out last night. I needed to buy a Scotch for the American vocalist. The choices at the bar, Famous Grouse, Dalwhinnie and chivas regal. The whisky drought is severe and it’s time the distilleries got their act together and made the journey to the South coast and educated the publicans by supporting some tasting events if they really want to expand their markets. Just a thought. Good V pub but had to watch on catch up. Monkey again failed to get a pass mark and yours truly reached the all important 5 marks.
Watching on replay. You are spot on Roy. It depends on mood. On reflection I probably tend to drink peated and sherry malts throughout the winter ( Christmas and New Year ) summer tends to see me gravitate to bourbon. I think, personally I can get fed up of sherry after a while . Bourbon is a punctuation mark, a rest if you will. There is no hiding in a bourbon cask. The distilled spirit is there in all its glory. As to my preference, am not certain I have one. If I like the dram I like the dram.
Sounds very reasonable and I agree. Also wanted to say on my journey at the start I tended to head to sherry and peat but in time and with a higher budget bourbon was very appealing 👍
Thanks, as always, Roy. It's tough to really choose one but, on balance, I'd probably go sherry. Gateway/eye opener was definitely the GlenDronach 12, from the early to mid 2010's. Favourites...? The 18,. But if we're talking things we can buy regularly..maybe GlenAllachie 12..
Bunna 12 would be my pick for integrity gateway Sherry-cask too. I gave a friend (whom I’m Scotch-bothering) a blind-flight of Deanston, Tobermory, and Bunna and he unhesitatingly gave the win to the Bunna. Another friend of mine who’s not as far down the rabbit-hole finds the Sherry influence of Bunna too much though.
Think going to manual settings on your camera is helping. For the last few years the camera always picks the big wooden Aqvavitae on the wall to your left and holding the bottle up in front of you covering your face did not seem to work. Now with your current settings as soon as you hold the bottle up to cover your face the camera is snapping into focus on the bottle. As soon as you bring the bottle back down it snaps to focus back on your face. Did not see it focus on the big round thing once. Cheers Roy
Hello Roy! Watching the Replay with a K&L single cask Mortlach 15 yr (refill Bourbon). That 18 yr. Speyburn is a killer! Purchased another bottle, and it destroys the over-hyped and overpriced Macallan 18 that sells for $350 ~ $400 USD
Long story even longer. My brother and I went to The Gathering at our danish branch of the SMWS this september, and of cause we went to some of the tastingsessions as well. I had been looking forward to the Springbank tasting. It is hyped and I love the 15yo. I also tried the 10yo sherry cs releases and all that jazz. The word had it that we would taste some cagebottles so I was excited. Well, we started with a 10yo OB. Its ok but I like the 15 better. Then came some festival releases, the cagebottles and finally a couple of SMWS Springbanks. It just got more and more sherry heavy. I feelt it was too much and I actually didn't really enjoy the tasting. After this a Bruichladdich tasting was on. The first two were also sherry and I thought "more of this??" And then it happened! Two feather light bourbon matured Bruichladdich. Unpeated, fresh, fruity, malt forward. I was back on track on track. Conclusion: I love my bourbon matured whisky. I also enjoy a good mix of bourbon and sherry and the lighter 2nd fill sherry stuff. But keep it light and fruity.
Great vpub. Speyburn 18 is an epic dram but not fully sherry matured (14 bourbon, 4 sherry to finish). Alarmingly it (and the 15yo - 12 bourbon, 3 sherry) may be about to be dropped to 40% abv to target one or more Asian markets. Start the campaign to stop the abv reduction now!

Aren't bourbon casks more honest, natural and authentic than sherry (actually "sherry seasoned") caks?) Just opened the Glencadam Reserva PX finish - quite nice, very raisiny and sweet)
Roy, @ ~54.40, according to WhiskyJason's calculations, the per bottle cost of a sherry cask contributes about €5 or less to the cost of a bottle of single malt whisky. So the arguments that producers like to make about the high cost of sherry casks, while true compared to ex-bourbon casks, are somewhat misleading when used to justify the high prices of many bottles of whisky. WhiskyJason also broke down the costs of a €100 bottle of Scotch single malt in Germany into: 30 for retailer, 30 for importer/distributor, 19 for various German taxes, leaving 21 for the producer. So then the sherry barrel's cost may be up to ~25% of the producer's portion of the bottle's return. An ex-bourbon cask may be half that, so the difference in barrel choice may be about 1/8, not 1/4. Deanston 18 has been £102-119 for the last 3+ years, locally. Speyburn 18 was £72-3 last year, but is now £93-4. Reminiscent of putty, on the nose. The Atom undisclosed Speyside 8yo sherry 48% has only just appeared in nz and sells for £60. I really like Glencadam 15, but following the kind/generous advice of WelshToro I also really like the Glencadam 13 which is rather cheaper. A bit of dunnage for added interest.
