This game never got the love it deserves. Hard as hell, but not in a cheap way. Beautiful art style. And if you're willing to grind a bit, you'll get a LOT stronger as you go along.
Some games from this era had such a distinct blend of cartoony style and earnest adventure. I love the personality they have! And it's a shame a lot of them are forgotten now. They have a ton of charm.

Dear god I can't believe I managed playing this game all the way through the underworld when I was only 7, but fail miserably when that first armored knight showed up. Brutal game to start playing PS2 with that's for sure lol

Rented this and loved it back in the day. I grew up on Ghouls N Ghosts long ago, so I love challenging games. I see the Dark Souls series as a sort of spiritual successor, even though it's not related.
Maximo, a brave king, attempts to rescue the Queen Sophia from the evil King Achille, who has awoken the power of the undead. However, Achille proves too powerful and strikes Maximo down with his magic and kills him. Floating in the underworld, Maximo is approached by the Grim Reaper, who reveals Achille is usingna drill to harvest souls from the underworld, fuelling his undead army. Feeling he would be out of a job if there are no more dead, Grim Reaper makes a deal with Maximo to bring him back to life in exchange for stopping Achille's evil plans.
Ya know, i probably spent 50 hours in this game, never beat it, and truly never knew the story. If u can capture a 10 yr olds heart like that, you know it’s a good game.
This was the first really difficult video game I ever played. I remember loving it! Played it through to completion several times. Got pretty good at it, but not as good as PJL hehe.

Why hasn't Capcom considered remastering this, this game came out in the early days of the PS2 and immediately defined what the PS2 was capable of and how it was going to be around a long time...

Plus I couldn't turn game off.I had to play through mass effect on xbox (I had maximo on ps2) in one long playthrough without dying otherwise I start from beginning.For some reason I can't remember I couldn't save on xbox at first either.

One of the hardest achievements I ever accomplished was beating this game with one play through without ever dying once. I did it at the age of 10ish… my cousin and I were convinced that if you didn’t die at all at the end of the game it would unlock something cool… well… it didn’t, lmao. But hey I still did it. I remember my cousin couldn’t believe I pulled it off, the pressure after the half way mark of not dying was crazy. And the end boss… I was sweating. Just to get nothing lmfao.

OMG...I remember this game. The one thing I remember is that the ice levels SUCK and that this game is EXTREMELY unforgiving! I NEVER beat it! I just love the visual charm this game has, it really has an identity of its own. Old games usually nailed that, I love to see this.

Capcom Digital Studios, the development team, was apparently a Mickey Mouse pet project that Capcom kept around for tax purposes. Contrary to what Capcom expected, the game actually succeeded and Siller was asked to leave.

I pulled out my ps2 the other day and hooked it up, I was playing all the games I did as a kid like sxs, tony hawk, the og COD all of them but sadly the disc for maximo was ruined😭
