Haha, thanks Dougie. It's a lot easier on some tools than on others. I forgot to include this in the video but on things like circular saws and mitre saws, it's often so much easier.
You're welcome and thanks for watching. I've seen the same as you've described with a Bosch drill a new brushes did the trick. Good luck with obtaining your parts and making the switch.
How do you know that carbon brush needs replacement? My old Black & Decor is getting charged at all . Is it due to dead battery or problems with carbon brush ? Please reply 🙏
Sorry to hear about your drill problems. I'm not sure whether new brushes would resolve your issues. I normally find the drills still work but sound rough and lack power or speed.
Any idea where I can find replacement brushes to buy? I have a Rockwell 12v Lithium tech drill/driver. I love this little drill, but I think the brushes are going. (For a 12v drill it has a lot of power, and I love the ergonomics of it! It's compact yet powerful for most of my needs.) Recently it seems less powerful despite a new battery. Could that also be the brushes???
Hi, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the brand. Have you tried contacting Rockwell directly? I see they have a website. In my experience, you can find brushes for better known brands (Makita, DeWalt, Bosch) on places like eBay. Replacing the brushes may well help. I've found that they can breathe new life in to older tools. I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I hope you find a resolution soon.
Yes, they said they do not have replacement parts. Oh well! It's hard to find a powerful drill that small. I have some nice Ryobi drills/impact drivers/hammer drills, but they are rather large compared to the Rockwell. I wish a company would make a nice, compact, well balanced drill like this Rockwell. It's a discontinued item now. Here's a link to what it was like: www.sears.com/rockwell-rk2510k2.1-12v-cordless-lithiumtech-3-8-in-drill/p-SPM6109191007
Some Dewalt drills have a sealed motor. The brushes are worn and it’s beginning to spark and lose power. I’ve tried removing the carbon buildup, but to no avail.
I'm sorry to hear that. It's a shame that some models don't allow you access to easily fix it yourself. Are you able to get it looked at professionally? By a dealer, perhaps?
Your telecaster?! Really??? ;-) But did you stop using the drill when you discovered this or did you blame the interference on the weather or something? Thanks for your comment, Jake.
Hi, yes, it is a DeWalt drill. I can't remember the model number but I think it was 12v and it looks very similar to the one you mention. I do hope the video helps. :-)
i know people have said to buy a new lithium version but I paid like $250 back in 2001found paper work with price it was $239.99 +tax so alittle over $250 hears my good old reliable drill i did buy a cheap hyper tough 18 volt ni-cd that i use as a screw gun thats all its good for and to hanging pictures for tough jobs i use my dewalt at 14.4 volts its got more power then alot of 18volts today _lh3.googleusercontent.com/C2QI8H72F8aM1pAQIe11mBQBHkcdyX8xrKvsJGVJFKubJQSVKf4LBVJOVpeIAyVPCs7dZxJkwFM_
Thomas dj kid solo Carroll In my experience, lithium-ion tools are mostly worth the upgrade when you're shopping at the higher end of the market. I bought a pair of 10.8v drills a few years ago and, at only 1.3Ah, they're no better than an 18v NiCd. I'm pleased that you're happy with what you have. I think a lot of people are unaware of how easy it is to 'fix' older drills when a change of brushes is all it takes.
its so true and most of the people fixing up the drills had them since new like me i did see a deal for 4 lithium ion batteries 14.4 the same type as mine just need a new charger I might consider doing it only problem is they are 1.5 ah for the 4 pack on ebay at $99.99 & the dual chemistry charger like $60.00 + tax for way less then the 4 batteries i can refurbished the two batteries I have with new cells that have 3ah replace the carbon brushes and even put a new Jacobs keyless Chuck all the transmission is comparable with what newer drills have with load speeds on Gear( 1 ) of 0-450 and Gear (2 )0-1400 and it's made in America so that's why I don't want to buy a new one my grandfather always used to teach me if it ain't broke don't fix it basically meaning if anyone else reads this it works fine to stay with it I just need some TLC and it's good for another 10-15 years or more I don't do the labor I used to do with it i use it for home use now so it will be perfect I'm not discouraging people from buying the hyper tough 18 volt drill at Walmart if you rent a place on a tight budget it only needed for basic home repair and then you get it its only got a 0-550 load speed with the torque settings thats it but it does have a LED light my DeWalt has more power than this and more power then skills 18volt ni-cd and black and decker 18 volt ni-cd not sure about the newer 18volt ni-cd Dewalt kit that's on the market but probably similar in power mine is a XRP it's not the standard 14.4 volt 18volt ni-cd drill its ok for a basic 18 volt i use it as a screw gun sometimes Ryobi 12 volt got more power even black and decker and skill but at under $20 it cant be beat Harbor Freight got one but battery sucks my friend had one just for fun he burned out the motor and he did get a second battery that one died really fast in like two.weeks could not charge it for anything original battery burned out the motor and could not be charged get your money's worth buy i.good brand hyper tough buy a new battery. is a pain you got to call a 800 number pay $12 + shipping of $12 its worth it if you buy two so anyone that reads this its just a heads up you can buy a new one to get a second battery or for a frew $ more have two.batteries + the one that came with the drill _lh3.googleusercontent.com/QwpZQNjlfRhXR8z3uscg06_3A2Iigud7s1qdqO-zUCg75Pa1PbHF8XdXrsUtbDbwnt35UKtuNX4_
Oh, I know! Not sure why they changed that but a lot of tools now are 'brushless'. Not something I fully understand and I wonder what other 'failsafe' there might be to protect the motor, without brushes.
Hi Olly. Got an old 18v drill that brushes have really worn. I can see the blades sliding onto the brushes, but can't see any obvious way of getting the old brushes out. It's a performance power Pro clm18hd. Any ideas? Cheers
Glen Collinson Hi Glen, thanks for watching and for your comment (I've also found your e-mail). I've looked at the photos and see what you mean. But I'm afraid I really don't know what to suggest... It's a new one on me! I'm sorry, this isn't what you were hoping for. One idea: you could try posting photos on the UKworkshop forum. Maybe do a search as well. I used to be a frequent member there; lots of guys who may've experienced similar.
I had a completely sealed motor and I used a Dremel tool to carefully cut the metal parts that hold it togethe, cleaned it and replaced brushes and super glued it back together. Hope that helps
great vid as always olly ,i hate having to change brushes on anything, ive been blessed with a set of fingers like pork sausages lol lol ,not to worry, thanks for sharing ,,,,,dougie...
THATS GOOD IF IT SOME🎄 IMPROVNENTS.🎄 I DONT KNOW🎄 Probably bruschess now is worn🎄 And drill may not alive now. Notice 9 years old video. 🎄 J have same drill just yellow dewalt from 1999 still going the same great. 🎄 Bruschess like new. Great kvality. Cao from titovo uzice. Yugoslavia. 🎄🎄🎄🎄❤️
So if your drill is smoking out the top back vents what’s the problem? Is it the brushes?
Can you also smell the carbon like it's hot? I normally do the brushes first as they're relatively cheap to replace.
Haha, thanks Dougie. It's a lot easier on some tools than on others. I forgot to include this in the video but on things like circular saws and mitre saws, it's often so much easier.
Thanks Olly - I have a Black and Decker 18V cordless which lights up inside when I use it, I think those brushes need replacing!
You're welcome and thanks for watching. I've seen the same as you've described with a Bosch drill a new brushes did the trick. Good luck with obtaining your parts and making the switch.

Using my drill outside used to make the tele flicker indoors! For some reason changing the bushes stopped this..

Olly Parry-Jones I’m going to swap the motor from another drill. I still have some old drills made by B&D , Elu and Dewalt. They’re more or less same.
Your telecaster?! Really??? ;-)
But did you stop using the drill when you discovered this or did you blame the interference on the weather or something?
Thanks for your comment, Jake.
this video should help me replace the carbon brushes on my old dewalt DW990 is the yellow drill you got in the video a DEWALT ?

It used to so easy to replace brushes on old drills, they use to just leave two removable plugs to easily replace them.
Oh, I know! Not sure why they changed that but a lot of tools now are 'brushless'. Not something I fully understand and I wonder what other 'failsafe' there might be to protect the motor, without brushes.
