আজ বাঙালির নামের সঙ্গে অঙ্গাঙ্গিভাবে জুড়ে আছে বিভিন্ন পদবী। যা উপাধি নামেও পরিচিত। হিন্দু, মুসলমান, বৌদ্ধ, খ্রিস্টান নির্বিশেষে বাঙালির মধ্যে নানা বৈচিত্র্যপূর্ণ পদবীর দেখা মেলে। বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, গুপ্ত, বসু, ঘোষ, দাস, সাহা, গুড়, হাঁড়ি, ডোম, বল, চক্রবর্তী, পণ্ডিত, ওঝা, সরকার, খান ইত্যাদি নানা পদবী দেখেই আজ সাধারণভাবে আমরা জাত বা গোষ্ঠী বিচার করি। কিন্তু সত্যিই কি পদবী আমাদের জাতিতত্ত্বের সাক্ষ্য দেয়? পদবীর মধ্যেই কি লুকিয়ে আছে বাঙালির ইতিহাস? রামায়ণ, মহাভারত বা মধ্যযুগে মনসামঙ্গল, চণ্ডীমঙ্গল, চৈতন্যজীবনীকাব্য ইত্যাদি গ্রন্থে কি পদবী ছিল? কবে থেকে পদবীর প্রচলন? -এইসব তথ্য নিয়েই আজকের পর্ব বাঙালির পদবীর ইতিহাস।
