Imagine a kid who wanted to stay up past their bedtime in the 1999-2000 era and owned a Sega Dreamcast. He lies down awake until his parents are asleep and plays his games in mute volume on his TV. Until one day his VMU dies and he doesn't know it. He boots up the Dreamcast at 1 AM and wakes up his parents with the BEEP from the VMU. I feel bad for him.
Lmao best comment lol 😅 I was horrible I remember one Christmas I new I had the snes a link to the past and I snuck it out of its package and played the shit out of it when my parents went to bed there was a couple times I almost got caught but I was very sneaky and I put it back under the tree each night they never knew 😅
I bought the system recently before the resident evil 3 remake comes out I wanted to play the original re3 and this is the best console to play it on ! I have a special HD converter box it looks nice but not as nice as the PC gamcube emulator / HD crisp filter someone filtered re3 on a gamecube version . It's gorgeous but I love the dreamcast
Yup, had to fake a bunch of shots for this review because I ran out of batteries, haha, cheap to pick up off eBay at least.. The batteries, a bit harder to track down in-store.
I was trying to back this claim up... But it might also be one of the first examples of a 2nd Screen for gaming. Didn't want to make such a lofty claim in the video, but certainly ahead of its time.
The age of controller attachments! Haha, I had a similar thing with the 64.. Seeing friends load up Gameboy cartridges, memory cards and rumble packs all through their controllers. Love these modular, funky systems :P Thanks for watching :)
As someone who only played on a friends Dreamcast, it's nice to get more of an insight on the VMU's as I had seen them mentioned in other dreamcast videos.
Yeah, I've neglected mine as well, this is one of those videos that kept getting bigger and bigger. SO much to cover, haha. Thanks for sticking around man!
You can buy battery rechargers for those button cell batteries, but it always annoyed me that Sega never implemented a recharge system on it when you play the dreamcast. It's the exact same technology they did for the Saturn's internal battery, so why not this?
It's a cool idea, but these batteries are thankfully cheap as chips off eBay. If we went back to the year 2000 and I had to ask my mum for new 2032's every week, I'd probably opt rechargeable then :P Thanks for tuning in man!
Larry Bundy Jr looks like I might have to try and modify some controlers to see if I can bring the charging up the line and replace the batteries with recharge cells
Well, of course, they would also have to had an easy way to remove that battery (assuming it's a nickel-based rechargeable battery, like Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh), or it would most likely have leaked like such batteries in vintage PCs.
I remember reading in Dreamcast Magazine. UK unofficial, there was a guy who ported Doom for a college project, as well another who home coded a version of Metal Gear Solid
Greetings from the west coast of the U.S., the wild land known as Oregon. Sir, I greatly appreciate your classic and somewhat obscure, video game reviews, thanks for making your video reviews of the classic gaming golden era. I hope life is awesome in Australia.
Thanks so much for reaching out with the comment! Really stoked to hear you're enjoying the show from Oregon man! Here's to a lot more classic Leftover Culture :D
Dude this sort of stuff is what makes your channel great. You always come up with games and topics that nobody else has really covered. That's probably intentional, but just letting you know it's noticed and appreciated :) In a sea of RUclips gaming channels, you've managed to carve out a unique style and humour, and the effort that you put into your set dressing, shots/angles and general ambiance is a cut above. I sound like a gushing LOCR fanboy now, but you really do consistently great work. Thanks for another interesting and entertaining video.
Gush away! Hearing this stuff is incredibly motivating, always hope I'll continue living up to it but I really appreciate you tuning in again and again :) Means a lot. Thanks!
My kids play each other with only the vmu’s when playing virtual tennis.. ( the controllers are plugged in and the game is running but they have little players, a net and a ball on the vmu screen which moves in real time) my mind was blown
Thanks for commenting! I had a quick snippet at the end about the Homebrew scene, but it's pretty cool stuff like this still exists. Thanks for sharing.
awesome video, finally found a Dreamcast complete in the box with the keyboard in box 2 controllers and 2 VMU units early last year at my local Goodwill just need to build up my collection now when I go thrifting 😁
Man, that blows me away. Seriously awesome find. Such a fun system to collect for too. Plenty of games that really stand out for me :D All the best with your hunting! Zombie Revenge is still a favourite ;)
Man, the VMU was a pretty good proposition back in the day. I remember taking it to school to make sure my Chao got his feed on. It was a pretty cool extension of the home console experience and like you mentioned, it was used as a basic second screen in some pretty engaging ways (Resident Evil health status, for example).
Couldn't trust parents to handle the important stuff like raising Chao (and Digimon, haha). But yeah, even how extensive the second-screen got used was really cool to see. I've seen a few games show up a logo, but it did get me curious what other games were doing with the screen.
:) :D YES!!! A new video! This totally made my day, man! And have to say your videos and reviews are just really well done, thorough and so damn good! Keep up the great work! Big salute from Thailand :D
:) Well it`s important to let you know that your work is really appreciated, man! As someone else pointed out here in the commentary, considering how good your videos are, the Leftoverculturereview deserves alot more subscribers! :D Just trying to do my part! :) Thanks, Thailand is good. Getting my ass whooped everyday but it`s nice hehe.
Just got me a dreamcast yesterday, ordered a VMU right away. This and the switch are my favorite consoles. I wanna get an online adapter and dreampi next, but that's a way's away.
Not sure how people found a way to program for it but you used to be able to go online & upload & download homebrew directly from the Planetweb (the official Sega Dreamcast web browser) web site. It was awesome to be able to dial up and grab saves, games, or animations for the vmu. The browser let you upload & download save files, no mods, I used to backup my game saves on my website "cloud saves" 20 years ago.
Sega GT has mini game allowing to gain easy extra money and unlocking cars not found on the normal game. Skies or Arcadia mini games allow to fully unlock Fina's pet full power once a patch was applied.
This was really cool. VMUs were one of the things that really attracted me to Dreamcast, but I never really knew what to do with them. The only thing I really remembered was uses it with the Chao garden, which seemed amazing at the time

I'll always love the VMU, played a ton back in the day! Skies of Arcadia's Pinta Quest was awesome and aided you in the real game, the minigames on Time Stalkers were so much fun! Raising Chaos in Sonic Adventure.....what a little marvel piece of hardware it is.
Great timing, I'm about to buy another VMU tomorrow on Ebay once Paypal kicks in. My only VMU is finally full (I just bought 18 Wheeler and that put it over-the-top; and Shenmue is a glutton for memory). I wanted to get Crazy Taxi next, but I need the memory 1st. I never played any of the VMU games because the batteries died so fast, hell, I don't think I even changed the original batteries from back in 2000.
Those batteries are cheap off eBay, couple of bucks. Kind of fun exploring what that little device can do. But yeah, can't have enough VMU's :P Some of those mini-games fill a VMU on their own, like the Zombie Revenge mini games... Grumble
+Leftover Culture Review I'll probably look for a charger for those batteries, I never knew they existed until Larry Bundy Jr. said so below; I never seen them in stores. I'm gonna have to look online for one. I also have a Saturn, Neo Geo Pocket, and Game.Com; so a charger would be very useful. I just ordered my 2nd VMU and is on the way, so I'll finally give those mini games a try.
I recently bought some batteries for my VMU and playing the chao mini game. Im really interested in looking into some of the homebrew stuff for it as well. Apparently someone made a version of Pokemon Go for the VMU.

You can also do custom artwork for the VMU on the Dream Explorer VMU Tool emulator disc. Pretty handy kit that, with great VMU minigames and downloads too.

Ohhhhh that would be a hard fail to get over 😔 I recently picked up a second from Japan. Had plans to slowly grab the smaller power supply and an SD card reader for when the disc drive eventually dies… not sure what the life of those are… it’s been 20 years 😅 I’ve already had a Saturn fail which was a hard loss… but I would have been extra dirty if it happened back when the system was newish

Does the VMU screen come on when it’s attached to the controller? I’ve had one in the past that was fiddly to connect. I also haven’t played Mortal Kombat unlimited before, but does it work on any other games?
@@LeftoverCultureReview my son sed it only comes on for his capcom vs. smk. I recently bought games from someone that he had copied from original dreamcast games. Could that be the reason why it wont work? When we go into the vmu there are no saved games. It is blank.
I didn't have much VMU experience but my assessment was it was just too small, like imagine the same 48x32 pixel scale but through a larger window at 96x72 or 128x96, would have been more versatile. And not using recharging battery packs to tap into the gamepads power line, criminally stupid. Still the broad concept was cool. :)
I imagine cost was a major, major factor for the device. Like, it really is a memory card first and foremost. It does some cool stuff, but they couldn't whack the price up by a few hundred, they kept costs low :P Appreciate you tuning in man, thanks!
I hear they were taking advantage of advances in cellphones at the time where there was a glut of these small screens on the market. Yeah sometimes cost issues can spoil the best ideas, bet a modern VMU with today's prices would be pretty good.
Yay or Nay? Always up for some advice on how to do this stuff better :) Always wish I had more time to play with the lighting and get a few extras in there. Need to start saving my pocket money better :P
The Dreamcast was sick I'm no fan boy but there was always something about Sega i loved growing up such as Sonic and Streets Of Rage, but Sega's problem after the Sega Megadrive was it kinda tried to hard and made everything way too advance for it's time then something better comes out a few months later like broadband and DVD.
Well, I guess going back to the Sega Saturn.. It was a rocky road Sega traveled. Just happy we got to see some truly interesting and memorable titles. This stuff is always so much easier to look back on in retrospect :) Thanks for tuning in.
WTF you are cutting your fingers!!! The VMU was one of the best part of the console but i am more excited about Zombie Revenge. I tough i was the only one who liked that game

SEGA was always the most innovative gaming company.
Too bad they're no longer applying their fresh ideas towards hardware.

I have Resident Evil 3 for my Dreamcast
so about that lighting setup.....
Take a suit every time he says "battery" or "batteries".
