I was an exo-L first and became an ARMY since BTS' debut. I witnessed all their hardships and successes. It was a very depressing time to be an ARMY in their early days because it felt like the whole industry was against them(although it's still pretty much the same until now) just because they came from a small company. Hence in their vlogs, jin mentioned that he was sorry for ARMYs because ARMYs always felt sorry for them. I was also there during the WOH backlash, you'd actually need a little dive in to the kpop history to know that most of these hates and backlash they received before were sadly caused by exo-Ls. They couldn't accept the fact that their idols were having a close competition so theyd always trend hateful hashtags on twitter for the bts members to see because they KNEW the members will see it because twitter is where BTS used to actively communicate with ARMYs before. Including the tags that trended for jhope, telling him he's ugly and talentless. At that time I decided to leave exo's fandom but still supported the artists in my own way. I felt so sorry for BTS because it didn't stop there, when they won a daesang exo-Ls couldn't accept it saying they were cheating the charts that's why they won, so they trended hashtags again and even went out to protest in public by lying down on the streets blocking traffic. Even trended death threats for Jimin to the point they had to cancel concerts for his safety. They did so MUCH. I'm glad to see BTS at the top right now. They deserved it. Thank you for genuine reactions as always 💜

Yes, those haters are still around. Although ARMY should be the bigger 'person' and just let those comments slide, you know just be glad that our boys in BTS are super passionate about music.. even if that should be the case, I still go out of my way to diss all those commenters in the best way I can, in any platform. I don't care if they're hurting that their idols are not as active or as talked about. I just want to hurt them with the same hurt they've been causing BTS (or trying to) all this time.

Just remember though that BTS would not be where they are at today ... on top ... if it wasn't for all those haters, as it was that hate that made BTS & ARMY have the motivation to fight back. Think of all that hatred as a "vaccination", which is supposed to make your immune system stronger & more "bulletproof". I can understand all the hate & envy though, because South Korea is saturated with so many music labels & so many bands, especially in the KPop industry, that people have to pick & choose which bands they have to invest their time, money & emotion into & when a new band comes along, it threatens all your efforts in being a fan of your band, so now you want to try to stop the new band from taking over so that they don't invade the space that your band is at. Whatever the case, it's a bad attitude & environment to do that in the first place. I just had a run-in recently with an extreme Blink (or Blonk) here on RUclips who was trashing BTS, but I was able to debate & argue as mature as possible & I believe I was able to come out on top, heh.

  • @tarida6574

As some of the other comments already said, a big part of this 'controversy' was the poor translation cuz for example the line "girls are like an equation, us guys just do them" a better translation would've been "girls are like an equation, us guys just try to solve them". I mean that line alone already makes a big difference, so they really did not deserve all that backlash tbh. It really affected BTS and especially RM but the fact that he apologized and since then even had his lyrics looked over by a women's studies professor, that really shows you what kind of person he is. He took that opportunity and turned it into something positive, to self-reflect and become more aware of issues related to gender equality. You don't see many people do that and that's why i respect him so much as a person. 💜💜

Like a lot of army I didn't really think much of the lyrics but what really stood out was the way they responded to it. Most people would rather pretend that they have never made a mistake ever, rather than acknowledge and make a mends when someone calls them on something. For that response alone, it made me love them all the more. And they have grown from the experience. Unfortunately we have a group of "fake" army within the fandom that are constantly trying to sabotage the boys. I believe the misogynistic lyrics and the J-Hope twitter trend were created from that group. Armys are at a number now that I don't think that would happen so easily now.
And I can't thank you guys enough for taking a moment to reflect on your reaction. That kind of reflective pause is very much appreciated, by me at least. I wish more men would do that. Hitting the subscribe button just for that. Borahae manitos!

27:47 armys would never forget how shady and disrespectful Suho to namjoon in this episode. this was hard to watch when this came out as he intentionally embarrassed rm, but good thing rm is not only smart, hes also a good person so he handled everything like a champ he is ;)
and as a woman, about the war of hormone, they just literally sang what a boy going through puberty/hormonal teenager usually thinks or feels when attracted to females. although i also think there are better words that couldve been used to convey the message without offending someone but its still not something i would consider as misogynistic. ive heard WAY worse lyrics that are just purely objectifying women in songs that were even topping charts.

Most people didn't have any issues with War of Hormone and saw it as a silly song about some of the emotions that come with being a teenage boy (most of the drama was from antis and people wanting to jump on something). My goodness the lyrics in western songs are SOOOOOOO much worse. I do appreciate the guys self reflecting and getting some review of their lyrics to make sure they aren't off track but I also feel bad for them because as poets and artists they have to edit themselves in a way that in my opinion can take away from their sense of freedom to express themselves. they are so humble and earnest that it hurts my heart a little, not gonna lie. So happy you are sharing your journey with us. One of the reasons I suggest The Rise of Bangtan series to reactors who watch BTS videos is because you learn so much about the individuals who make up BTS. In addition, you learn why the ARMYs are so dedicated and protective of them. If you come for BTS, you have to deal with the wrath of the ARMYs which is why some call us crazy but that's because they haven't taken the time to really learn about the members and our bond. When reactors take the time to watch this series they say I get it now. I understand why the ARMYs are is so protective of BTS. So happy to have you as part of the BTS ARMY family🙂💜!

    35:00 yes.
And no matter how it's compared to others lyrics I think it was really good they took the critique and learnt from it.
Way to many army just defend it with "boys being boys" (also said about pushing the girl into the locker and then dragging her by her wrist into a classroom and her showing no resistant as if it's normal or ok in Boy in Luv korean title is 상남자 meaning Manly Men) and "it's nothing compared too..." And I do not think it was that bad either that it should have blown up to much but I think that in the end it was good that it made them consider their lyrics impact and I think it helped to lead to the BTS we have today.
Korea has a lot to work on when it comes to discrimination, misogyny etc, they talked about it when they went to the UN last year with the former president and now with Korea having a new president that wanna take away the little anti discrimination protection there is it is even more important not to act as if words and actions doesn't matter.
I think BTS are as great as they are because they listen and learn.
There are a lot of homophobic stuff that are normalized in the world and even if that or racist remarks etc sometimes are just "jokes" and not as bad as in other places etc doesn't mean it should be said at all. So why use lyrics that can hurt or further normalize misogyny?

how bts responded, learned and reflected upon themselves with the promise to do better and get more educated on these topics is commendable and that alone gets so much respect in my book but the absolute dogpilling they endured, hate, insults was very unnecessary and undeserved. and its still brought up and used to this day. because u could not tell me there arent worse songs in the kpop sphere (not even talking abt wester songs) that never got even a FRACTION of the things that were hurled at the guys just because everyone the media, kpoppies, other companies were ganging up on the small fry in an attempt to ruin them.
so while i agree with what u said but at the same time what a lot of armys say like "its nothing compared to.." is still true too though. two things can be true at the same time.
+ the fact that out of all of this they havent performed the song for years is so :// like the song would bang live at their concert. hell even if its like a one time performance during muster/festa but i get why they probably wont perform it sigh

I've been binge watching your reactions and I don't usually comment when I see that a lot of people have talked about it, but I just want to answer your question with how similar Japanese and Korean are, the short answer is, it's not similar at all 😆 I studied japanese and although I'm not very fluent in it, I understand enough to translate audios. And I can't understand a thing in Korean lol. Although Korea was colonized by Japan for several decades, the only similarities they have in language are loan words borrowed/adapted from Chinese and English as well as a bit of sentence structure. Writing system is a bit similar in structure, but completely different in characters. They both know a bit of Chinese characters though since it's still being taught in schools, I think around elementary years for about 3rd or 5th grade? The members just know Japanese since they studied it too. Namjoon is definitely fluent enough to communicate, Jin studied a bit so he's got the pronunciation spot on and it's pretty good, the rest of the members knows some phrases and words.

Okay, about War of Hormone, that was definitely blown out of proportion. It was cheeky and truthful but not offensive. The translation was also not very well done. “여자들은 방정식 우리 남자들은 해” technically means “girls are equations, us boys do (solve) them”. But the way korean is structured, you don’t need an actual verb there. So they just use the 하다 verb which is generic to mean “to do”- something. And in this sentence, what is the subject? It’s “girls who are like equations.” So when they say, we “do them”, it means to solve the equation.
Haters intentionally misunderstood and blew shit up and for some reason, some ARMYs also latched on to that and made things so hard for BTS at the time.
Yes, I’m proud of how BH and Namjoon reacted and there is always something to learn from how people react but it was also unnecessary and caused irreparable pain to them.
War of Hormones was a satirical commentary on puberty, making cheeky statements about teenage boys and their hormones. The entire album was about the dark twists and turns of young men coming of age. It was very much a part of their journey.

In this case I believe everything happening was exaggerated and maybe, just maybe, it was meant to shock and be commented on, so young men could learn that it is not acceptable in the real world.

I don't think it's so much a matter of national culture but more of generational culture. Younger millennials and Gen Z's tend to be less tolerant of certain expressions especially when they are in any form of discriminatory tone, which I think is okay. I'm not exactly a fan of those lyrics but I'm certainly not worked up by them. However, I think those that found some offense in the lyrics should also be respected, we should find an opportunity to discuss these things and learn from one another regardless of our backgrounds.
That said, what's more admirable about BTS especially RM and their company is that they were not defensive about the lyrics but instead took accountabilty and explored ways on how they can be better in the way they write songs. In fact, RM has said in some interviews that he even consults professors who specialize in these topics to review his lyrics to make sure they're not misogynistic or discriminatory in any way. That's so rare for artists these days - integrity, accountability, an effort to be upright, using their fame and artistry as platforms to champion social justice. But that's how BTS is, especially RM. They make an effort to be excellent human beings even though it's hard.
They said from the start of their careers that they will stand for justice especially for the young people. They've always taken that seriously. They take that seriously until now. That's the reason why they are credible voices worthy of being heard up to the halls of the United Nations and the White House. We stand with Bangtan Sonyeondan because they stand for all of us. 😊💜

*so..let me clear the misunderstanding k-popies hv and few Armys hv about this song which was blown out of proportion by h@ters & Antis to create drama that time, which worked cuz k-popies & media latched on it...*
Let's be real, War of Hormones wasn't misogynistic. It was just an honest song about what guys in that age range go through. They were straight up saying that they struggle with their hormones when they see a pretty girl, and guess what? That's just being honest. The title itself gives a clear idea to how they see it. A war. An internal conflict. And it's true to what guys in their late teens and early 20s go through. Bangtan has always been about talking about their experiences and being a voice of people their age.
The entire album, Dark & Wild, was really just about the turmoils of young adulthood. In the title of the album too, you can already tell what the sentiment was going to be. The first 3 albums spoke about school and issues of teens. And then from there, the darker days of coming to terms with adulthood. And then the HYYH series. Everything was thematic with stories they wanted to tell as they go through life.
Antis and fans of other groups were just grasping at straws to find something to shit on and unfortunately the media picked up on it and then some ARMY took it as truth and they themselves started talking as if the song was offensive. It isn't. We need to stop spreading this story as if BTS were misogynistic boys who needed to learn a lesson. Yes, Namjoon has learned a lot from the experience and has gone out of his way to speak to experts in women's studies, but I'm sure that whole ordeal also caused him unnecessary pain.
    *My take on it*
I don't see anything wrong with the lyrics of the song. All boys go through puberty and the things BTS sung in this are just reflective of their experience going through that phase in their lives. This is the reason I love them and their songs.. they didn't hide anything and covered all the feelings/thoughts of a person who is in his/her adolescent...one can see them growing up from then till today…I personally don't find the lyrics offensive and “most” Armys as well..as I agree they are expressing the struggles of dealing with hormonal changes in adolescence, and I'm sorry but sexual attraction is the number one pressing issue in most hormonal teens regardless of gender. There's a couple of issues I take with people who found this offensive. First, the double standard. You can't tell me young women were purely innocent in their thoughts and feelings as they watched these young men dance and sing, they just didn't make a song about it, at least not publicly. Secondly, the entire concept BigHit wanted from BTS is a representation of the youth culture and the issues youth deal with as seen and heard through the lyrics and music of BTS, and of course everyone has or will experience sexual attraction. Yes, they refer to see through clothing and high heels etc, but I've seen hundreds of posts referring to JK's abs, Jimin's body rolls and shoulder "accidents" Tae's tongue...you get the idea, and while many comments aren't necessarily teens it's not a problem. There can only be an issue if the lyrics were implying that I'm only attracted to girls who wear heels and sheer clothing, not sneakers and sweats. Anyone who has experienced adolescence knows however that if they're sexually attracted to someone the person could easily walk around in a potato sack and an adolescent would still be entranced.
A lot of people were offended by that line, "Girls are equations and us men just do them". Personally, I took it as "do them" meant they were puzzles to be solved, not a sexual act. RM was honestly shocked that people were offended by the lyrics and that they could be considered misogynistic. It was definitely a learning experience for him. He apologized and has since run his lyrics through a few professionals in women's studies before releasing a new song. They don't really release songs like this any more. But to that a korean Army said translation in English were a bit off, which lead to misunderstandings and explained it saying : “I was kinda surprised it's translation was "do" because that part "do them" CAN actually sound offensive to some people, because the meaning of that word 'do' is not clear. However I can clearly say that it's not meant that way, and Korean version lyrics tell that. Words are more specific, and not controversial in Korean version lyrics, because it doesn't say 'do. That part in Korean is 여자들은 방정식 우리 남자들은 해 which says we men are 해 is a word for mathematics, and it means the 'answer/the final number'. So it means they solve. the complex minds of the girls. 해 DOES have the meaning of 'do' too, but its not appropriate to translate this part of the lyrics that way, because if u say it means "do them, it doesn't fit the sentence there. Since there's no Objectives for that Verb 'do' and that's... kinda awkward. plus. the context and meaning of the whole sentence is talking abt mathematics and Equations so what u said is true. It doesn't mean sexual way”
BTS hv made few mistakes unknowingly early in their career and said things which can be considered offensive, as they were young but they hv re-educated themselves, apologized and never repeated the mistakes again..but I hv seen many k-popies and so called Multi Armys twisting many things because of that..take for example this song.. it's blown out of the proportion just to cause drama..and they were sadly successful in that..haters/antis tried every lil thing to bring BTS down & sabotage their career ngl..
*Now last but not the least* ..when this controversy happened, When joon apologized, The one thing that struck me about that was a part in the statement saying they took so long to apologize because they wanted to understand what exactly was the issue... And that part I definitely liked, I've never been a fan of blanket apologies.. BTS always try to understand the problem & try to improve..joon apologized because as the controversy was over "ppl were offended", he apologized for the ppl who were offended by this song, that doesn't mean the song was wrong, he was kind enough to take responsibility for it, ofc bighit & BTS took this issue (which was blown out of proportion) and apologized so that this unwanted drama surrounding the song would end (isn't that common sense) he sincerely apologised..but that doesn't mean that WOH is misogynist or objectifying women..like the title itself clears it out! "War of hormones" what ppl expected form this song to be like seriously?! Ppl who still want to believe that WOH is objectifying women are really dumb for me..
    *I'm out* 🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏻‍♀️

I have been listening to Korean music since 2000 ish.
WoH are not misogynistic for me, as I've encountered many other women stating so. They are satire about how hormones dominate their bodies. And to my experience of having more male friends than not, seem accurate.
Having listened to Korean music before and after, the problem only arises when it's B-T-S (I'm not even bringing western songs to the topic). Many singers and bands have written worse and still write worse. Not an eyebrow is up.
Since day 1, the general public (and the haters) are on their backs as if they had to be THE perfect idols, when none was. THE perfect lyricists, THE perfect social problem communicators or whatever.
Good for them to not remain silent then, even acknowledging it could be viewed as such (not that it was such), and educate themselves. Even yesterday Eddie Nam (some will know who he is, some not, Nam brothers are good people too!) tweeted "It doesn't take any effort NOT to talk,
I don't know any artist that goes beyond the gaslighting "I'm sorry YOU took my words wrong". Till today, in the White House, they are faced with burdens one after another. Everyone wants them to be perfect, and wanted them since day 1. Fortunately, they are such precious human beings (not gonna say the only ones) and have taken this burden graciously. And I cannot be more proud of them (we all army feel like proud mamas and papas seeing them up there T-T).
I lived the twitter trends attacks. And they are awful. Still are. To this day, sometimes some things resurface and when some fandom wants to fight you they go to really really nasty lengths. With Hobi and all the members, really. Same or different topics. Mr Jung Hoseok not only pops and locks, he won a national competition and won popularity award in another company competition, he has great lyricism and rhythm sense... So, after that, they all took 3-4 days off :) as you see from their respective hometown vlogs. (remember Jimin and JK are both from Busan, and Tae and Yoongi from Daegu, different areas though)
Yoongi birthdays were special... until you see people selling the stuff on ebay :_( (I guess it's ok if you TRULY need the money and are sad to part with it).
Remember 2014 he made 300 handwritten notes and snacks bags! He added 50 more after, because more people appeared than expected. Then now in 2015 he wrote again notes and gifted transportation cards. :_)
As a language learner: Japanese and Korean have only grammar in common as both are SOV languages and use of particles. The writing and vocabulary are each their own, apart from few similar words or words picked up from western languages (like "Arbeit" from German, which they refer to part-time jobs). Japanese adopted Chinese characters, but retained their pronunciation AND the Chinese one. Korean use Chinese character for official names and I think that's it :) (Like "House of Justice" or the names of people, as to separate meanings due to multiple homonyms).
It has nothing to do with Spanish-Portuguese-Italian-French all from Latin descent (being Spanish even somewhat derived/diverged from Portuguese - I'm Spanish). Korean comes (presumably) from Manchuria, vast northern area of China (historically important) and Japanese is an isolated language, for some time scientists were relating it to Finnish (also a "lost" language, as Basque is in the North of Spain).
So yeah, the guys have to remember their songs in Korean AND Japanese, and even I have trouble singing to the different lyrics, even though Japanese is easier for me. Plus English now. Oh, they sang Boy in Luv in Chinese too!!! ^^ they are great hehe.
The show Problematic Men is awesome. He (Joon) and the company took the opportunity as free promo for the group :) (as ASC, Hello Counselor and others less gracious with them --> that's why they did Run BTS). You have to notice that the questions were in English sometimes, so they are not easy for Korean people (the tricky ones are even difficult for some native English speakers too!). Anyway, HE JUST REUNITED WITH THE CAST!! T-T He posted photos having dinner with them, and you don't understand the nostalgia. Beautiful.
BORN SINGER!!! #1 Track in the CD 1 of their first Anthology Album! :_)

It's my opinion that Bangtan became the Bangtan we love because of RM's leadership and guidance. He's introspective, open-minded, wise beyond his years and the perfect leader. While BTS has done some things that are questionable in the past, I truly believe they learned and grew from it. As for the War of Hormones lyrics, I have no problem with it tbh. Just because a song talks about a woman's body doesn't mean it's objectifying women, smh. But cancel culture is strong in the k-pop world, especially when it comes to BTS. So BTS got a lot of undeserved backlash for that song. Too bad they don't perform it anymore.

  • @djinnsbetpools

I personally have no problem with the lyrics other than they're incredibly adolescent and cheesy; but then, I understand it's an unfiltered song about puberty, and objectively I quite appreciate that transparency from the writers. Also, WOH is a catchy song; I rarely describe things as cringe-worthy, but I have to say I did cringe when I first heard it. 😅 This is with the thinking that I could say those lyrics to ANY gender, and it would still sound horny and laughable. It didn't stop it being a bop though, and I just laughed through the secondhand embarrassment, watching the boys act like clueless dorks.
I think I feel like this because I've heard worse songs growing up. While that doesn't invalidate the negative connotations and feelings it drew from other people, I love how seriously BH and BTS took the criticism. Critics would say that BTS didn't have to make that song, and the bare minimum artists who HAVE written the same objectifying lyrics is to acknowledge their mistake and apologize. Yet, BH and BTS did not only address the issue with an explanation and heartfelt apology, they never let ARMY forget that they made this mistake. They reinvented themselves and showed that they were asking for help to be better. They kept communication open with their fans, with their critics, with their mentors... And they took their public's hand and gave the responsibility of checking and balancing them as they grew big. It's not often that artists do that.

Korean and japanese do not sound the same , different alphabets but it does have the same formation . Have similar sentence structure and grammar but the words and the pronounciation all differ . Both languages do still use some chinese characters and words but both korean and japanese have its own alphabet with the minor use of chinese characters , it is easier for korean to learn japanese and vice versa than it is to learn englisn or french etc . Koreans do not automatically understand or grasp japanese and vice versa without learning the language .. japanese was forced unto the koreans before independence decades ago so the generations that speak japanese in korea are either dead or very old.. bts grandparents def spoke japanese , v grew up in his grandparents home ,, so japanese is a language he picked up frm his grandparents .

People are way too easily offended these days, though I think that the majority of the controversy over WoH was due to fan wars or something (I don’t know which group’s fandom started it, some people have said Exo in the comments? But idk). Even in Korea, there were songs that were way more objectifying and such towards women out at the time. I do appreciate how you guys acknowledged that maybe you’re missing some cultural context, cause yeah, in America, rap is prolly the most misogynistic genre out there. But the song was literally a satiric commentary on how hormones make people (including girls) think and do stupid things as teenagers and young adults, and that’s a universal phenomenon, across all cultures. It’s a shame that they don’t perform it anymore, cause the song is so catchy and the choreo is really fun. I’m also not one of those people who say “well, they learned from their mistakes” because I don’t think it was a mistake to begin with. Or misogynistic at all (I shouldn’t have to say this to validate my opinion, but yes, I am a woman). But I respect that they chose to handle it in such a way, even if I don’t think it was necessary.
