- This is a video recorded in 2008 showing the old line of the canal where St Peter's Way now stands. There's almost nothing left of the canal in this section, but we've tried to bring it back to life using archive photos.
Some of the voice overs have been recorded via messenger using a laptop microphone, so the audio is substantially poorer. We had to do it this way because we're in lockdon due to the corona virus, and Steven Parker has no other recording equipment to hand.
Our goal is to eventually edit down all the footage, archive photos, and maps of the canal, and produce a final video that encompases the whole stretch from Bloody Bridge at the River Irwell in Salford, to Church Wharf in Bolton, and then on to Bury Wharf. In this video we're hoping to rerecord some sections of the canal to show what has changed in the last 12 years, and we'll be re-rerecording the voice overs.
We hope that you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed making it. Please like and subscribe. We're a very small channel, but we'd like to grow.
Fascinating stuff. I walk through the underpass everyday to and from work and although I always knew about Church Wharf and the community down there, never seen so many old photos of the place.
Thanks for the excellent video. I can no longer get about so your video was like a virtual tour. Incredible how things have changed. I like you, enjoy looking at old street maps of bolton . I was born in the early 1950's in halliwell and how things have changed. The current generation are quite lucky in certain aspects in that there is a virtual record of the area thanks to Google etc. What I wouldn't give for a time machine. Anyway, keep up the good work mate.
Excellent video, I have learnt alot about the canal watching your videos. 👍🏻
Thanks Steven. I appreciate that.
Fantastic areas I knew well as a kid.👏👍
I just followed the route, as close as possible. Did it on an carbon aero road bike, what a fool. Followed it all the way back to Manchester. Thanks for the video.
Very interesting. Some great photos I haven't seen before. I now the area like the back of my hand. I used to live on Westbrook St. (demolished in mid 1984) If anyone fancies a poke about for a bit of lost history. On the banking just by the stone railway arch on Bury Rd, the banking below the footpath to the footbridge where the wood shed is/was tucked under the arch.. might be gone now... 25 years ago there was one of the old iron gas street light poles just lying in the brambles (Other side of the viaduct from Plevna St)
I wonder if that's still there... just lying in the undergrowth forgotten.
If you know the area from back then you will know exactly where I mean..
Your videos are great and really helpful.i left Bury when i was 11 to live in Scotland and never knew about much about the canal. Are you aware of the great website called NLS its overly maps form years ago over google. i use it constantly to find the canal hope you find it useful
Thanks Fiona. Yes I've had a look at that website. It's brilliant, and shows you how much has changed in the past 100 or so years.
Thanks just subbed.
The fine was as high as eight shillings.
