I bought the 'Ultra Light' version, which is only 270gm unstrung. I put a couple big nails in the handle which brought it up to 320gm and have ordered some lead tape to put on the frame. Hopefully I can get it just the way I want!
Finally, the best comparative review of the Pro Staff 97L, 97 and RF97 in a short and sweet video packed with good analysis! Glad that the good doctor took the initiative to review the 97L, being the most overlooked variant. I have both the Pro Staff 97L and 97 v13. I play my best tennis whenever I wield the Pro Staff 97(315g) which is strung with the Tecnifibre Triax at 52lbs to experience the classic feel of the racquet. I also play with the 97L variant when I'm in a 'light & easy' mode, but the slightly thicker beam width of 23mm affords free power, added stability and it is a joy to play with due to its manoeuvrability - one can't dismiss the 97L as an inferior variant as it is quite powerful albeit the lower swing-weight. I dare say that the Pro Staff v13 is quite an engineering marvel in racquet technology, as the 97L is not very far off from the performance of the 97. Looking forward to more comparative reviews from this channel!
Thanks for the kind words👍 I’ve always been intrigued by the light variant rackets and can they compete with the others - I found the 315 to be just one of the most comfortable frames I’ve played with in quite some time- the L was actually really nice from the baseline but I don’t think I could ever really use it just due to the net play and the fact that I go through a lot of serve and volley spurts - I’d like to do the same kind of comparison for all of these L, mid, tour rackets so hopefully they’ll be coming out soon !
RF97 works like a dream for me. Deep, crisp pocket on flat serves and volleys. The head light balance means that the heaviness of the racket gives the whippy feel a lot of stability. Sometimes it's a little unforgiving on the groundstrokes, but I see it as a teaching tool to refine my fundamentals. Great review!
Thanks I try to do them the same way every time that way I don’t miss anything - I have some people sending me stuff but as a whole I’m just buying the stuff for review- it’s fun but yeah eventually I’ll need some stuff sent or my wife will turn off the gear faucet
For anyone who is considering 97L vs 97 mid due to the racquet’s weight, definitely go for 97 mid as long as you get the right technique, unit turn, follow through, … then the weight difference is not the matter at all but help you for a more solid stroke and reliable at the net
How many decades do you think it will take for a newbie to go from 0 to a solid 4.5-5.0 to be able to play well with a 315g racquet? :) 315 is a very, very demanding racquet. And it is not about your physical strength. Only ATP/former ATP and silly amateurs play with 315g racquets. :) I played with Head Speed Pro 315g and I loved it, though. However, that was many years ago when I was a total newbie. I play with 97L and I am happy with it. I wish there was a 300-305g 97 version of Pro Staff.
@@dimawood007 That's why I don't mention physical strength, I mentioned right technique. I moved from 97L to 97 so I can tell what it's like and It's far from decades to do that. You do seem to realize that you played 315g when you was a total newbie, and certainly physical strength is the ONLY thing a newbie can do with a 315g.
Love the format of your reviews - gives the viewer a much more practical idea of what each racquet can do. I like that you use numbers. I have used RF97A for a few years - I have tried many other racquets usually lighter ones but I always come back to RFA - I love to try & take over points with this on the forehand side and the fact it is great on defence and can not be bullied by pace and spin from my opponent. Slice backhand is also fantastic. Serves are great also but like you suggest I am probably losing a little on kickers due to me not being able to move the mass fast enough but it's decent enough and a small price to pay overall. If I struggle with an opponent I know it's all on me. This racquet inspired me to improve my strength and fitness so no excuses about fatigue with the mass of it. Meanwhile, I'll keep doing my rotator cuff exercises to try and get that kick serve to pop more. :-)
Thanks for the kind words- that’s actually a great point about the racket on serves that you can improve your strength / fitness to match the racket - very cool
I played with the BLX 6.1 that Fed used 10 years ago. lots of feel. Moved up to the RF97 this year and feels the same (same weight) but with a bigger head, I hit the sweet spot more often and with much more power. After an hour of hard hitting, my arm is tired but a smile on my face.
The RF97 racquets have always been a drag in the second hour of playing bc it its the heaviest. The 97Light is too weightless for someone physically strong, even older players with good technique and a strong game. I have been playing Pro Staff for many years. The 97mid is state of the art--might be the best of the regal line of PS--powerful, accurate, and forgiving too. Very fast at net and defensive awkward plays. Made tennis great again!
I like the 97 mid a lot- has been my best playtest so far of all the rackets I’ve tried - if I had to switch right now it would be to that- but I still have a lot of rackets to go
Great review. As i have got older I have gone from ProStaff 95, 97s and now 97L. Its been my shoulder slowly not wanting the weight. I now understand why my volleys aren't as crisp, and why some of the harder hit shots pop off my racket. The 97l is great though as it is so consistent: if you stay at the back, and stay in the point, opponents try too hard and drop the point. I still loved that 97s though!
Great Video, keep up with this great content! It would be cool to see a H2H between the 16*19 Wilson Blade and the 18*20 in order to understand how the string pattern actually affects the rackets, since it is one of the most common question in forums and stores.
Great job! Best review I’ve seen so far. I’ve not tried the 97 yet, but I can imagine you’re right about it being fit for the average player based on my one match experience with the RF97(v11). I was amazed by how much it improved my serve and swing volley. It does charge its price in the one handed backhand, though. Nothing I can’t adjust with practice, but it’s noticeable that you must make an extra effort to hit on time. I’m not too much of a net player, so I’ll have to play more to evaluate the net volleying. Nevertheless, I am sold on it. My partner, who lended it to me, went back home with a 340g lighter racket sack.
Excellent review. I am used to heavier frames (though softer and with lower flex) and after demoing the RF97 Autograph, decided to order a custom frame in gloss paint (which is much more resilient than the rubberized paint). Despite the higher stiffness rating, it is excellent with gut or a soft multi filament in the mains crossed with a softer poly. I did not like the frame at all with a full polyester bed even at lower tensions. Easy spin, power and very stable.
Used to play with the older RF97 for being a Fed fanboy, then realized I couldn't really handle it and tried other brands, Head, Babolat, Yonex, you name it... Now I think I found my perfect racket with the 97 v13, I love the feel and the fact that it's a little more forgiving than older prostaffs, and the weight pretty much hit the sweet spot for me. I did add some lead tape at 12 o clock which gives me a little more plow through. I string it with technifibre nrg2 17 gauge at 53/50, and a control and feel oriented racket together with a powerful string just does the trick for me as it gives me options to be aggressive or consistent whenever I want. The racket is just really versatile and I am glad you found the 97 to be the overall best out of the 3!
48! I wish I could string that low- my buddy who I play with in that video is also at 48 on the 97 and he loves it- sometime I need to try playing a few weeks at that tension, I’m so used to being at 55-58 lbs but I know it’ll kill my arm in the long run- old habits die hard
U should try the Dunlop CX 200. It's my current raquet of choice and I feel like it would suit you, being mostly a control oriented raquet but still being able to generate power
I play with the RF and it is a difficult racquet to play with when you are on the run and trying to get in position. At 53 I may switch to the regular 97. The RF is incredible at the net and I like it overall. It doesn’t hurt my arm or shoulder but it is a bit of a beast for an older guy.
Watching this is really interesting as I am also looking to switch my stick, I have used the steam 99s for years. I bought the Clash 100 Tour but haven’t loved it. So all of your racket reviews help a lot!
That’s awesome to hear thanks for that! I liked the clash more than I thought i would but it just felt a little cumbersome to me during transition shots- I played with the steam only once but remember thinking it was a pretty decent stick- Ive played with an RF now for a few years and I cant get over how much more I liked the 97 mid than both by original RF and v13 RF
@@FootDoctorZach Been using the RF97 about a year now. Love it, but am going to demo the PS97 just to give it a try. I sometimes get slight fatigue from the RF, but not a huge amount.
Got rid of my v12 97L in favor of a V13 97 "mid" as you call it. Best upgrade I could dream of in terms of stability and feel. The L even customized at 305g and 31.5 balance doesnt compare at all. The change threw off my muscle memory at first but I got used to it after about 5-10 hours of play. Going to get myself a backup one too. This V13 feels incredible and complements any swing style and any shot style I try.
@@bacchingabriel depends on your level and what you want out of it. If you are beginner-intermediate (which I assume you must be if you are using the L) then I would recommend a more control oriented Multifilament like Tecnifibre Triax 1.32 or Head Velocity MLT 1.25 if you want something cheaper. I would string Triax at 25KG and Velocity at 23.5. It isn't a comfortable frame (the L) so I would stay away from poly and especially from full beds of poly. If you want poly, then your best bet is tour bite soft 1.20 at 20 to max 22kg.
Super review of the racquets. Love how you have gone into in depth detail on all kinds of strokes and displayed the parameters of each. Really helps in understanding each pro and con of each frame. I am upgrading from a Wilson K Factor 90. Extremely heavy racquet and it starts giving me shoulder pain after 30 - 40 mins of hitting. I am a recreational player who loves to hit more baseline and use tennis as an exercise. I don't play matches often. I have tested the 97L Camo (Older Gen) and its great. I am not sure which of these I should go for 97L or 97 in the current gen. I am a strong hitter and 39 years old and big built. Hoping this much info would be enough if I should go for the L or the mid. Thanks in advance.
@@FootDoctorZach the issue is the 97L v13 isn’t in stock right now and will take a while. The camo edition is a available at a dropped down rate. I have been testing a used one and it seems great. Your review has me thinking if 97 mid is better or should I stick to L
Me personally I’d always go prostaff if for nothing else but the launch angle helps on the prostaff when I’m not feeling consistent - babolat will start sailing on me if I’m not keyed into my strike zone
Excellent Review!!! I just picked the mid and RF to demo! Looking forward to testing them out tonight! One of the best racket reviews I've seen over the last 3 months! The only criticism was the muffled narrative due to your mask, and the music was a little busy, esp. at the end. I'm not sure if your were trying to be PC with your mask, or just fearful? You were more than 6ft distancing and exercising? But still the best pro staff review! Bravo!
nice review. i still have feds ncode 6.1 90sq and looking to new prostaff. Im leaning towards 97 mid because stiffness 66 is preferable for me. Stiffness rating any higher and i tend to hit balls long and need more topspin. thanks for the review
Heavy is good to a point. People should use the heaviest racquet their arm can handle, not just in individual shots, but through an entire match. Like you said, the heft of the RF started to wear on you towards the end, which starts to negate some of the benefits of a heavy racquet. I think a bigger problem though, is people using a racquet that is too light. Especially among newer players who are sold on the idea that bigger and lighter is better.
Pro Staff 97 V13 is apparently a common and popular tennis racket. What many viewers are wondering is if the Pro Staff 97 V13 has any equivalent options that might even be better?
Currently using vcore97 HD it’s a fantastic racket when your timing the ball well and feet are moving but if somethings not working I tend to miss hit a fair bit. So I’m thinking of switching to the pro staff mid or the head pro tour 2.0 have you tired that one?
@@FootDoctorZach it’s for sale on tennis warehouse think it’s a re model of an earlier pro stock racket. Heard some good things very high weight and swing weight not as stiff as the RF though.
i own the rf97 and the 97. for me, the 97 is the perfect racquet. heavy enough but not too heavy that if i'm late on a stroke, i can still make the shot. in all honesty, there are very few people who can actually hit with the rf97 properly, whether they want to admit it or not. now that i have wrist problems, i think i might have to go to the 97L. don't like light racquets, but i'm old now. have to i think
Have you tried building up the grip at all for the wrist issues? I found when I was having them years ago that’s what solved it for me- my dad plays with the 97L with some lead at 12 and he hits really solid with it
I m using a wilson ncode ntour 95 but they are warned out, looking for a wilson staff but can t decide between the mid and the L, what do you suggest me ? thanks, I m a very good amateur and 57 years old
Nice review of the racquets. Solid strokes. I think it would be a nice touch if you tell us what shoes you’re wearing prior to the review. Just my two cents
At the intro? That’s actually a cool idea as the main channel focus is shoes i could kinda tie into that- Awesome! thanks for the thought I really like that
Excellent review. It sounds like the mid is a great fit for your game but not enough difference to switch. I’m currently using the RF97A and it is a difficult racquet to use but rewarding as well.
Love your reviews! I discovered your channel while watching a test for the Nike Air Zoom Vapor X Knit and saw that you were playing with the same racquet as me ( Pro Staff 97 315g 2014) and and I wanted to know if you really feel a difference between the two (PS 97 v13 315g) ? I've had them for 6 years ans I feel that they are exhausted haha ... Thank you so much ! 🙏🏼
Thanks! So I find my old RF more forgiving but that may be because I’ve been playing with them for a few years now, the v13 had more power as well and I think that’s just because the racket is brand new - I don’t personally think there is a huge difference between the two, I’ll bet if you painted them the same it would be hard to tell the difference
I really appreciate your attention to detail in reviewing these 3 racquets. I've had wrist and elbow surgery and am working on building my arm strength back up. It was actually using the 97 mid that caused a bit of pain to flare up in my arm. That's why I would lean toward the 97L, as anything above 310 is still giving me some discomfort. Having tested it so thoroughly, would you recommend adding weight to the 97L to get it up to 305 or 310? And where precisely would you recommend adding weight?
Honestly I couldn’t tell you depends on your swing style and speed- I’m not a huge fan of adding that much weight though- I’ve never been able to get it perfect across my 3 rackets so I’m usually trying to just mess with weight within a small weight and pick a racket that just suits me better in its stock specs but that’s just me
Nice video. Are the beam widths basically the same? The narrower the better for me. How does the head area compare between them? What kind of cost are we talking about unstrung? Thanks
Yep it’s weight/balance that are the difference - prices are all over the place but Wilson’s prices are going up quite a bit in September so buyer beware
Another great review. I've been loyal to Pro Staff's since the Sampras/Edberg era. I currently have v11 of the Pro Staff 97. I've read the difference is not very noticeable between v11 and v13? Also, what are those kicks you are sporting on the court???
Thanks! They’re the Nike court tech challenge 20, review will be out tomorrow - as far as the pro staffs go there arent a ton of differences from 11-13 but I will say on the 97 mid it felt like it had a bit more forgiveness than the previous models - I wouldn’t say it’s anything earth shattering or anything that will all of a sudden start making you jump a level but it is a very comfortable racket for all the control you’re getting
Having been a user of the v11, I'd have to say the v13 has better dampening built in, without a loss in feel. Also, the tighter stringbed in the sweet spot offers far better ball pocketing on a clean shot than the v11. Hitting off-center is also less jarring in the v13. Also, it may just be Wilson quality control, but the v13 feels lighter than my v11. I am considering buying a second V13 if I can't get customize the V11 to feel more like the v13 in terms of swingweight.
Actually yes, and Wilson is known for just slapping new paint on- I would say the mid is the most different feeling, a little softer, more feel, the RF isn’t much much different just maybe a bit stiffer and the light is maybe just a bit more stiff but its the mid that really is a different playing frame
Hi I am playing with the RF97. I can use it well to hit ground strokes and volleys with but it is heavy on my serve and smashes. I also play with a Yonex ezone 98 and I serve much better with that racket. I justy prefer the pro staff model. Would you recommend the pro staff mid instead??
Hey Zac what string set up and tension do you usually use with you Rf97? Been planning to switch back to this frame lately. I have used the Rf97 for 2 years before and have shifted to the ultra tour 18x20 but am missing the extra power of the RF
NXT Duramax at 55 lbs or solinco hyper g at 55 lbs - I really have an issue with stringing at high tension- just an old habit I need to get rid of and start going down in tension
Hi, for an advanced player which one would you recommend? I have to change mine and I don't know which one to choose. I've always played with the speed pro so I dont know how the other models are
Excellent review! I'm an intermediate player who just play tennis for a while. I would like more control. Should I choose 97L or Wilson blade v7. 305g? I'm not a strong player ~
@@FootDoctorZach Is it easier manuvarble? I read many infos from some users. I play with v11 and i love it. But just curious about v13, because i dont think that izs just new paintjob... Can you write all things you noticed about v13 vs v11 😊😊 Thanx
I can’t really get that detailed in the comments section as that’s an hour long video in itself- the newer version is less maneuverable than previous and alittle more hefty feeling with a harder to find sweet spot but when used properly it’s one of the best sticks out there
So the best thing would probably be to keep all three of 'em in your bag 😁 You start out with the 340, as your energy levels drop off a bit you switch to the 315, and when you're reaching the 5th set tie breaker you switch to the 290 😉✊
That’s a good question- I actually like the 16x19 a tad more just because I want the spin- but the mid is just so nice for pinpoint accuracy so it’s just a trade off between the two
Just depends on if you are hitting a full stoke or not/ if a true beginner then I’d go for the light or even trying something like the head instinct, Wilson clash, head extreme mp
I've been a long time pro staff user. My first one being the 6.1 classic. Then I moved on to a BLX Pro Staff Six.One 95. And a few years ago I tried the PS 97 (2016 red and black model). I wasn't a huge fan, didn't seem to offer the same stability my BLX model had. But A few months ago I demoed the Pro Staff 97 V13 (mid model) and fell in love immediately. Had greater feel and stability than the BLX and far better ball pocketing and access to power when I need it, despite being a control-oriented frame. I bought it right after my play test and will probably get a second one as I am currently experimenting with various strings and being able to switch back and forth would be nice. Btw if anybody recommend some strings for this racquet, please let me know. I have so far tried a couple hyrbid setups: Luxilon ALU Power in the mains and Wilson Sensation in the cross (56/58). And also Solinco Confidential in the mains and Gamma Live Wire Professional in the cross (54/56) which is currently my favorite of the two setups. I am looking for great feel and access to spin, longevity not really a concern to me.
I’m debating between the v13 and the radical pro so I may be hitting with it more here in the near future - have you tried ultra cable in the crosses by weisscannon?
Excellent review. I now feel I have an informed decision about these Rackets. I’ll wait for the prices to drop. I have 2 pro-staff 85: what can be better than that.
How difficult will the rf97 be. I have used the pro staff 90 for a long time. I always had trouble transitioning to backhand for defensive shots with that racket. The forehand and serve were the stand out features for me. I was on the fence for this racket and the prestige pro 315 grams. What do you suggest?
They say that the previous mid (315gr) model of 2020 , the black one (not the countervail) is a little unstable due to its open pattern , comparing it with this new one , witch has a denser string pattern in the center.Have you tried the previous one, is there a noticeble difference? Great video !
Thanks ! Yeah I’ve played with the older model just a few times and I didn’t find it unstable but the newer model just seems like it feels cleaner on impact- but that could just be placebo of a new frame - although I did notice I liked then v13 mid more than previous but I like the older RF more than the newer so I think there is something to the newer models- both good and bad.
I had the rf-97 AGraph and was great but I have an extreme western grip so was very hard to create spin. I am now with the Babolat Ultimate Spin Aero and feels great but i miss my baby ;(
A great review, thank you!! I used to play with the 97RF v12 before a shoulder and elbow injury and switched to 97L v13. So far I am really enjoying it especially the slice, however, I would love to have some more weight but not too much as the the 97 or 97RF. Ideally, I would really like to bump the racket weight to 300g or 305g without loosing the balance...etc. How would you recommend me to do that?
Thanks! That’s tough to pull off without getting into 97 mid territory or making the racket too off kilter - I would probably go with lead at 3/9 and then bump up to a leather grip to balance the handle and see what that does - you can also do some silicone in the handle or some lead in the throat to counter balance if the leather grip isn’t enough - good question!
Hey Dr ! Your videos are so well informed. I enjoy learning more and more from you . I would be so happy if you could answer a question of mine: 1. I’ve been playing for 10 years now and I use the babulat pure drive... and I want to get a better racket, don’t mind the price, just an overall great racket. I move a lot in court , play backcourt and volley Thanks a lot !!
@@FootDoctorZach I'm about to play with it for the first time in around 30 minutes also do you think code 4 strings are the best strings compared to other strings 😎
My dad did almost the same thing - he thought he wanted the L but kept modding it up to the point that it feels like a mid- but I think he’s just going to switch rackets altogether soon anyway
hey, i currently play with the pro staff 97L v13 but i am looking for something a bit more advanced and may want to move up to the mid version, would you recommend this?
Thank you for this review! Very clear now what is the difference between these three. And many thanks for your videos! I play now with old Pro Staff Hyper Carbon 5.0, which I used when I was 14 and now started play again after 20 years pause. After four months i feel discomfort in my elbow (technic problems - sometimes hit a ball late and racket weight - 360g stringed). Do you think new mid PS will be more elbow friendly?
Hi, thanks for the great review. I am currently switching from rf to mid. What string would you advise? Semi-Western fh, Eastern single handed backhand, use lots of spin on clay but I am an allround player on the court.
One of the best racket reviews i've seen! Btw, What string(s) would u suggest for the 97L? And how much lead would u add to the throat and/or 3 & 9 position ? Thanks again doctor ;)
Thanks! For the L id go something stiff at least for me like a alu power rough - the lead is a tough question because its just user dependent but id have lead from 2 to 4 and 10 to 8 but then again id probably just then go for the Mid if i was putting that much lead- my dad has an L and has put so much lead on it hes just switching to a heavier frame
@@FootDoctorZach I may end up doing the same, will play around with the modifications 1st. Is it possible to get the ultra light model playing like the mid if you get the lead in the right places, or will it never be quite the same?
Just came across this video. Love it, as well as the others. I own heavy frames from many of the major racket brands and would love to see a comparison between the Head Speed Pro and Gravity Pro. BTW - In my opinion, there is nothing like returning big serves or ground strokes with the RF 97. Wonder if you agree.
@@FootDoctorZach Your play test review actually have motivated me to try new pro staff racquets. I’ve hit with a friend’s pro staff racquet n it felt really good. I am a 4.0 players play both singles and doubles. Most of my racquets I use weigh 300g or 305g unstrung. I wish the new pro staff racquets come in 300g but I had to choose between 290 and 315. It wasn’t an easy decision for me as to which suits better for my game. I thought 315 would feel little too heavy for me to handle and 290 would lack stability especially at the net n can be pushed around against strong hitters. Based on your review I decided to go with 315g. I hope it doesn’t feel too heavy for me.
It doesn’t feel too heavy just based on the weight so you should be good- you may notice it after a a few hours serving but your arm should get used to it quick
Hello ..... can RF97L 2020 be compared with Head microgel radical OS 295g ... ?? Age 50 ... 4.0+. Full court tennis, but the hand is slower and sometimes the elbow hurts when I play for more than an hour ... thank you.
I’m not a huge fan of the microgel radical to be honest even though I love a lot of other radicals in the line up - the 97l is sometimes hard to get pace out of so you may want to try the 97 (mid) or even maybe the head instinct which are both ultra arm comfortable as well as easy to get pace from- the 97 v13 in particular is just an overall really comfortable frame in general- my dad has a 97 L and he ended up loading it with lead tape to the point he said he wished he would have just got the mid .. hope that helps
just demoed the RF and Im a heavy racquet guy too, but that stick feels like a freaking log. I play a phantom 93p with weight added and its still ten times more user friendly than the rf in my opinion
I’ve found myself liking it for an hour then slowly having a hard time getting any racket speed whatsoever- when I was playing every other day I was used to it but now it’s getting tougher
Im asian, slim build. It is a bit challenging but would love to master the RF because the stability on 1HBH and shots hit like truck. Anyway, i will demo the PS97 soon. What do you think?
I just always say dont use a racket thats too heavy for your arm- itll lead to problems down the road, only the heaviest you could swing for a 5 set match
@@FootDoctorZach as usual, for the last few years, the colours have been yawn to the max, except for the Laver Cup blue...i wish wilson would go back to the fun colours of red/black/white (k factor?) and white/red/gold (ncode?)
Honestly I have huge problem choosing between these two, RF causes me acene and strong calves but everything else is perfect. PS97 does no harm to my body but feels regular

I bought the 'Ultra Light' version, which is only 270gm unstrung. I put a couple big nails in the handle which brought it up to 320gm and have ordered some lead tape to put on the frame. Hopefully I can get it just the way I want!
Funny , 5.0’s don’t even use the RF97’s

Thanks!
Finally found the racket that I need. I’ve loved the 97 as soon as I hit the first ball with it, Thank you for the review Zach!
That’s awesome👍👍
Is it me our your review is actually more organized and pronounced. Hope you get some more sponsors for some of these tennis gears.
@@dimawood007 There is the new Pro Staff Six One 100 v13 which is 305 gm. That's a 100 sq inch head though. I have it and it plays beautifully!
@@manasbhaijaan exactly that is the best for intermediate players
That’s a great way of putting it with the RF- I playing with a BLX for a short time back in the day too and thought it was just so smooth
The RF97 racquets have always been a drag in the second hour of playing bc it its the heaviest. The 97Light
is too weightless for someone physically strong, even older players with good technique and a strong game.
I have been playing Pro Staff for many years. The 97mid is state of the art--might be the best of the regal line
of PS--powerful, accurate, and forgiving too. Very fast at net and defensive awkward plays.
Made tennis great again!
I like the 97 mid a lot- has been my best playtest so far of all the rackets I’ve tried - if I had to switch right now it would be to that- but I still have a lot of rackets to go
@TvRF the mid is just the standard 97 racquet (not the RF97 or 97L)
Great review. As i have got older I have gone from ProStaff 95, 97s and now 97L. Its been my shoulder slowly not wanting the weight. I now understand why my volleys aren't as crisp, and why some of the harder hit shots pop off my racket. The 97l is great though as it is so consistent: if you stay at the back, and stay in the point, opponents try too hard and drop the point. I still loved that 97s though!
👍 for sure- I’m going through the same things
Great Video, keep up with this great content! It would be cool to see a H2H between the 16*19 Wilson Blade and the 18*20 in order to understand how the string pattern actually affects the rackets, since it is one of the most common question in forums and stores.
Thanks! I’m such a fan of the 16x19 just with my swing style I’m always going to be so biased but yeah it’s a great comparison to do
Doc, setting the standards on racquet reviews.
Thanks, glad you like all the data!
I’m also not a huge fan of these with a full bed of polys- feel like I’m ice skating
Yeah I really think that 97 v13 is a great compromise given the weight and balance of it, it plays like the RF but much more forgiving
nice review! just had my 97L strung with rpm blast at 48, 2 grams at 3&9 and the throat, fantastic!
48! I wish I could string that low- my buddy who I play with in that video is also at 48 on the 97 and he loves it- sometime I need to try playing a few weeks at that tension, I’m so used to being at 55-58 lbs but I know it’ll kill my arm in the long run- old habits die hard
@@FootDoctorZach 55-58 lbs!?, what string and gauge are you using?
U should try the Dunlop CX 200. It's my current raquet of choice and I feel like it would suit you, being mostly a control oriented raquet but still being able to generate power
I’m going to be trying it this year for sure
I play with the RF and it is a difficult racquet to play with when you are on the run and trying to get in position. At 53 I may switch to the regular 97. The RF is incredible at the net and I like it overall. It doesn’t hurt my arm or shoulder but it is a bit of a beast for an older guy.
My dad just downgraded to the 97l from the mid with some lead and he’s been swinging a lot more fluidly
for as asian guy (slightly smaller build) the rf97 is a arm/shoulder killer; currently using the 97mid and loving it!
Doc what about the strings and string tension? They do make a huge difference in how the racket responds.
Thanks for review. What do you recommend for intermediate player?
Outdone yourself again, Doc. This channel is just amazing.
Really glad you’re enjoying the content, what racket are you using currently?
@@FootDoctorZach Been using the RF97 about a year now. Love it, but am going to demo the PS97 just to give it a try. I sometimes get slight fatigue from the RF, but not a huge amount.
That’s my biggest complaint about it too- I think you’ll like the 97 a lot though if you’re used to the feel of the RF
I am returning the RF Autograph as it is too heavy and hard on my elbow. Going to order RF Light. Let’s see how it would turn out to be 😅
Hello wich one between these two would you recomment, the Pro Staff 97L or the Head Radical 360 S?
Depends on the individual - I like the prostaff light better personally but it’s a personal preference

They all have the same pattern yep

Also would you recommend the Adidas men's game court shoes
They aren’t my favorite shoes but they get the job done- glad you’re wielding the RF well
@@FootDoctorZach what shoes do you recommend for a cheap price
Nike vapor lite with an orthotic in it ruclips.net/video/iD9oy9AYHNY/видео.html
Nicely done. Which one would you recommend for someone who has experienced tennis elbow?
For sure the 97 mid- the lite you have to swing too fast to get any weight and the RF will just end up wearing down your arm
Can you compare the Pro Staff 97L with the Yonex Percept 97L? Both are similarly specd but the Percept has a thinner beam which I really like.
It really is the all around players racket- hard to fault it
what kind of strings and tension you recommend for the light one?
@@bacchingabriel depends on your level and what you want out of it. If you are beginner-intermediate (which I assume you must be if you are using the L) then I would recommend a more control oriented Multifilament like Tecnifibre Triax 1.32 or Head Velocity MLT 1.25 if you want something cheaper. I would string Triax at 25KG and Velocity at 23.5. It isn't a comfortable frame (the L) so I would stay away from poly and especially from full beds of poly. If you want poly, then your best bet is tour bite soft 1.20 at 20 to max 22kg.
👍👆
I always string midrange around 52 lbs with solinco tour bite, tnt rough or NXT Duramax
I honestly couldn’t tell you without seeing you play - it’s all personal preference and how consistent you play with each- everyone’s different
@@FootDoctorZach the issue is the 97L v13 isn’t in stock right now and will take a while. The camo edition is a available at a dropped down rate. I have been testing a used one and it seems great. Your review has me thinking if 97 mid is better or should I stick to L
Best review I’ve ever watched on ProStaff!
How about ProStaff mid vs Pure Drive Tour 2021?
Thank you- that would be a tough video as theyre both so polar opposites- fit such different players
@@FootDoctorZach can you elaborate more? Aren’t they similar in term of swingweight and playstyle?
These are the two that I’m stuck between..
Bravo!
It was state law to wear a mask at any indoor facility when the video was shot- hope they work out well for you , very clean hitting sticks
nice review. i still have feds ncode 6.1 90sq and looking to new prostaff. Im leaning towards 97 mid because stiffness 66 is preferable for me. Stiffness rating any higher and i tend to hit balls long and need more topspin. thanks for the review
Thank you 👍I would think that’s a great idea as I responded to that frame well coming from my RF 97
Yep it’s a push pull between the two sides - I often end up going heavier but as I age that’s changing
I cannot decide between the Pro Staff 97 mid and the Blade 98 16x19. Maybe you can help? 🎾🎾🎾
IMO pretty similar - just go with what feels most crisp
Pro Staff 97 V13 is apparently a common and popular tennis racket. What many viewers are wondering is if the Pro Staff 97 V13 has any equivalent options that might even be better?
Currently using vcore97 HD it’s a fantastic racket when your timing the ball well and feet are moving but if somethings not working I tend to miss hit a fair bit. So I’m thinking of switching to the pro staff mid or the head pro tour 2.0 have you tired that one?
The update to the classic that Murray plays with ?
I found when I was having them years ago that’s what solved it for me- my dad plays with the 97L with some lead at 12 and he hits really solid with it
@@FootDoctorZach thanks for the tip! will definitely try. so get an overgrip build it out? i am using a 4 1/4 grip on it.
I’d just try to put a build up kit on it - they sell them specifically to built up the grip size- see if that helps
How much weight is he using? I feel the 97L too light and with no enough power. Too many shots with no depth.
I m using a wilson ncode ntour 95 but they are warned out, looking for a wilson staff but can t decide between the mid and the L, what do you suggest me ? thanks, I m a very good amateur and 57 years old

👍👍
Is there much of a difference between these and the previous version though?
Actually yes, and Wilson is known for just slapping new paint on- I would say the mid is the most different feeling, a little softer, more feel, the RF isn’t much much different just maybe a bit stiffer and the light is maybe just a bit more stiff but its the mid that really is a different playing frame
Hi I am playing with the RF97. I can use it well to hit ground strokes and volleys with but it is heavy on my serve and smashes. I also play with a Yonex ezone 98 and I serve much better with that racket. I justy prefer the pro staff model. Would you recommend the pro staff mid instead??
I’d have no way of making a recommendation without seeing you hit the ball- it’s all personal preference
RF strung high at 58pds with Confidential 16g is a dream!
Hey Zach, how’s the New RF comparing with old one, thanks a lot man.
A tad softer at impact, maybe a little more hefty feeling though
Hey Zac what string set up and tension do you usually use with you Rf97? Been planning to switch back to this frame lately. I have used the Rf97 for 2 years before and have shifted to the ultra tour 18x20 but am missing the extra power of the RF
NXT Duramax at 55 lbs or solinco hyper g at 55 lbs - I really have an issue with stringing at high tension- just an old habit I need to get rid of and start going down in tension
v13 340g vs v1- also 340g weigh different when strung and grip is added. ?normal
Very thorough review. Thanks!
Hi, for an advanced player which one would you recommend? I have to change mine and I don't know which one to choose. I've always played with the speed pro so I dont know how the other models are

go for RF 97, been playing with it for 6 years, great racket
Excellent review! I'm an intermediate player who just play tennis for a while. I would like more control. Should I choose 97L or Wilson blade v7. 305g? I'm not a strong player ~

I can’t really get that detailed in the comments section as that’s an hour long video in itself- the newer version is less maneuverable than previous and alittle more hefty feeling with a harder to find sweet spot but when used properly it’s one of the best sticks out there

Congrats on your reviews!
Do you think the mid one is a better overall racquet than the pure strike 98 16x19?

@@FootDoctorZach thanks for the reply, I will consider it. What is the difference between pro staff 97 and 100?
Head size - bigger sweet spot
@@FootDoctorZach honestly haven't even heard of that brand. So you'd suggest that in the cross with a poly in the mains?
Yeah and also it only comes in 17 gauge so that may play a factor too
@@FootDoctorZach Perfect cuz I normal play with 17G as well. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out.

Excellent review. I now feel I have an informed decision about these Rackets. I’ll wait for the prices to drop. I have 2 pro-staff 85: what can be better than that.
Thanks! Yep those are golden
Are you planning to jump from an 85 to a 97 frame?
That seems rather extreme.
@@jpesmar I did. Give me a little time to figure it out.
How difficult will the rf97 be. I have used the pro staff 90 for a long time. I always had trouble transitioning to backhand for defensive shots with that racket. The forehand and serve were the stand out features for me. I was on the fence for this racket and the prestige pro 315 grams. What do you suggest?
Rf 97 much easier to swing than the 90 but is still a lot of racket after 2 hrs on court
Hey Doc, do you notice any differences between the newest rf 97 v13 you use in this video and your usual rf 97 v10 (red and black model)?
Yep newer = more blunted , dead feeling
I am using a prestige youtek mp (98 320gr 18x20) I am not sure if switch to RF version or 97 315, any suggestions ?
Zack, what strings were you using and what was your string tension on all 3?
It’s all in the video
I had the rf-97 AGraph and was great but I have an extreme western grip so was very hard to create spin. I am now with the Babolat Ultimate Spin Aero and feels great but i miss my baby ;(
It is a great frame but I can understand why you parted ways
@@FootDoctorZach will give it a try, thank you!
🤙
@@FootDoctorZach Why not go with Pro Staff Six One 100 v13. Thats 305 gm unstrung, and sits nicely between the 97L and Mid 97
Hey Dr ! Your videos are so well informed.
I enjoy learning more and more from you .
I would be so happy if you could answer a question of mine:
1. I’ve been playing for 10 years now and I use the babulat pure drive... and I want to get a better racket, don’t mind the price, just an overall great racket.
I move a lot in court , play backcourt and volley
Thanks a lot !!
do you like the pure drive?
I got a Wilson pro staff 97 Roger Federer autograph racket the black and white color combination with code 4 strings for Christmas 😎👍
NICE
@@FootDoctorZach I'm about to play with it for the first time in around 30 minutes also do you think code 4 strings are the best strings compared to other strings 😎
Not sure, everyone has such different likes and dislikes it’s hard to say which is better in terms of string
where did you get those shorts? is that what all the hipsters are wearing nowadays
I assumed they were all still wearing corduroy
nice shoes, what nikes are those?
Court tech challenge - I have a video on them if you search Nike court tech challenge 20
Can you test the Pure Drive 2021?
When I get new rackets in I’ll give them a shot
I use the 97L and modify it to mimic the 97 mid. I actually wanted the 97 mid but there was a huge, huge discount on the 97L ones.
No idea I’ve never seen your strokes- it’s the next logical step up but you just have to demo and see if it feels good over 2 hrs
Glad you like them -Yep, but something like the clash may be more
Hi, thanks for the great review. I am currently switching from rf to mid. What string would you advise? Semi-Western fh, Eastern single handed backhand, use lots of spin on clay but I am an allround player on the court.
Depends on your elbow and how you respond to stiffness. I always go with NXT Duramax
IMO never the same , close but not there
what string and string gauge do you use, chief?
In general is use NXT Duramax 16 but for the racket review videos I use gamma syn gut
@@FootDoctorZach thank you!
👍
@@FootDoctorZach so do you prefer multi instead polyester strings?
Just came across this video. Love it, as well as the others. I own heavy frames from many of the major racket brands and would love to see a comparison between the Head Speed Pro and Gravity Pro. BTW - In my opinion, there is nothing like returning big serves or ground strokes with the RF 97. Wonder if you agree.
Yeah agree for sure
Excellent review👍
Thanks! Do you play with these?
Thank you👍😎
is this in NY?
Is the 97L good for a high school player?
Sure, but so is the mid- just depends on your level more than your age
@@FootDoctorZach okay, thank you!
👍
I love my RF 97. More control of the ball with less effort Nd same amount of power. Aweaome
It’s for sure a player’s stick- not a lot of other rackets have the same feel
Hello ..... can RF97L 2020 be compared with Head microgel radical OS 295g ... ?? Age 50 ...
@@FootDoctorZach and my father has no problems with his hand .. ?? how is it with vibrations compared to other Head Rockets ... ?? thanks
There isn’t much vibration- the construction of the hoop is that that it dampens really well
just demoed the RF and Im a heavy racquet guy too, but that stick feels like a freaking log. I play a phantom 93p with weight added and its still ten times more user friendly than the rf in my opinion
I’ve found myself liking it for an hour then slowly having a hard time getting any racket speed whatsoever- when I was playing every other day I was used to it but now it’s getting tougher
@@FootDoctorZach you should demo the phantom if you haven't yet. It plays like a heavy 97 without the extra bulk. A real classic frame
Great vid! Thank you
Glad you liked it!- are you a fan of the Pro Staff line?
String specs and pounds
What a great review!
Thanks! Do you like the colorways?
@@FootDoctorZach as usual, for the last few years, the colours have been yawn to the max, except for the Laver Cup blue...i wish wilson would go back to the fun colours of red/black/white (k factor?) and white/red/gold (ncode?)
Yeah I liked the bright solids for Laver a lot
@@leisurefarm .
Honestly I have huge problem choosing between these two, RF causes me acene and strong calves but everything else is perfect. PS97 does no harm to my body but feels regular
Acabo de comprar la Prostaff 97 v13... me la entregan el 14 de mayo... vamos a ver qué demonios 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
