Janet, Circus Charlie is timeless. Konami makes unquestionably great classics.

Impressive play indeed. It was right next to Track & Field back in the 80s on Walton Pier; I remember watching the demo over and over in between events as I clocked the aforementioned game, much to the chagrin of a couple of other boys who wanted to play. Heh, they were hoping I'd go out on the Hammer Throw, but I somehow kept on fluking it. (^u^)
Funny thing about Circus Charlie though, is that I don't recall anybody ever playing it at the time, myself included. Oh, it's a nice enough title for sure, but I do dispute a little what you say about it being a masterpiece as it clearly wasn't popular, especially compared to the likes of Kung-Fu Master for example, which you could never get on. (*_*)

Ah...I played both games at the game center, and I still remember them vividly.
I really like both games.
