  • Here is Kerry Butler's performance of "Somewhere That's Green" during the September 23, 2003 preview performance of the original Broadway production of "Little Shop of Horrors" at the Virginia Theatre in New York.
After the failed Florida try-out earlier in the year, the video of which is posted here ( • Video ), the show was totally scrapped and reproduced from the ground up, with a new director (Jerry Zaks), new choreography, new set-design, and a new cast. Virtually the only element to survive the move to Broadway was the casting of Hunter Foster (fresh off of the musical URINETOWN) in the role of Seymour Krelborn.
The cast also features Trisha Jeffrey as Crystal, Carla J. Hargrove as Ronnette, and DeQuina Moore as Chiffon.

Kerry's performance as Audrey is so underrated, imho. You can literally see the tears in her eyes and feel the pain and hurt in her voice as she's longing for a better place "somewhere that's green." I never understood why people thought that this song was sad, as I always paid attention to the humor and irony in it, but once I saw her perform it for the first time, I got it... and got as choked up as she does.

Marti Frazier I always thought the exact same thing! She’s so innocent and yet she isn’t treated the way she should be. She just wishes for a better place for her life to carry on in. She’s always been my favourite Audrey! When I first watched this and I saw the tears I felt for her and honestly wished she would get to be somewhere that’s green.

I will confess that when I saw this production on Broadway, I had a hard time setting aside the legacy of Ellen Greene in this role and finding Kerry Butler somewhat lacking in comparison. But watching this clip helps me see that she actually did a really lovely job with this song and in this role. Beautiful.

All those purists who've spent the last eighteen years harping "She's no Ellen Greene" are missing the point. Kerry never TRIED to be Ellen! Ellen's Audrey was high camp and Kerry's was sincere; Ellen played it for laughs and Kerry played it for real. Maybe people weren't ready at the time for ANYONE to challenge their memories of Ellen. Or maybe because Kerry had just come off of playing the gawky, ditzy, quirky, gum-chewing, scene-stealing ugly duckling best friend in Hairspray, they were expecting the same kind of performance in Little Shop (if you think about it, Audrey and Penny do have a few characteristics in common). Whatever it was, they missed out on really great work and they will go to their lonely, cold, forgotten graves obstinately withholding from Kerry the credit she deserved.

The key line is "a fence of real chain link." The character of Audrey wouldn't say that if she didn't think "real chain link" was fancier than imitation chain link. Of course there's no such thing as "real chain link," so the character of Audrey has got to be played as absolutely naïve about the world.
Here's where Kerry Butler's performance can't hold a candle to Ellen Greene's who makes us very protective of her Audrey -- naïve (even dumb) but well-intentioned and desperate for someone to love her. Ellen's Audrey dreams of a "Donna Reed" life, and we want that for her, knowing that any escape from her put-upon life will make her happy forevermore. She accepts being abused and belittled; she only wants to please others.
Kerry's Audrey is sweet, but not naïve enough, not lost-in-the-world enough. This Audrey lacks the vulnerability that makes us want to hug her and weep for her unfortunate situation.

You are SPOT on.....there's no desperation in this Audrey. She looks lovely, sings lovely....would love to have had so worldliness to her -- beaten down (a bit), not a pristine note-hitting. Whitewashed, sanitized, homogenized....just like much of this country, I guess.
