  • I was surprised to find myself in Calne, having planned to go somewhere entirely different in another county, but I was in for a treat in more ways than one!
Join me as I walk around Calne, showing the Castle Fields Park area and also the centre of this beautiful town.

Calne looks like a very quaint little place with a very calm vibe. Thanks for showing us around!

It is. I believe it has been hugely transformed over the years from what I have read about it.

    Loved this Louise!
Yes, I filmed my monthly vlog here about two years ago, I think, mid week, it was a bit more lively then, but still pretty quiet. I made use of the town green, where you finished your video, and the park as well, for doing sit down pieces to camera then.
I was very impressed with the archetecture there too, and with the whole town generally - it has a good feel to it.
I was also rather taken with that park - and, bonus, part of the Wilts & Berks Canal in it (Calne Arm) - I wonder it it will ever be fully restored? It would be so nice to see.
I think the church was locked when I was there too! Maybe they only open for services.
I loved the calming and relaxing feel to this whole video - and the way your gently guided us around it.
I think both Jan Ingenhousz gentleman (photosynthsis) and Joseph Priestley (oxygen) had connections to Bowood - a large stately home nearby which is open to the public - it has a huge park and a large lake too - I have visited it many years ago, but not for my channel.
I think the scupltured head was part of an art installation and it won top prize and was voted to stay but I am not 100% sure. I wasn't sure about the castle grounds either or where exactly the castle once stood.
Really enjoyed watching and a nice start to Sunday!
    Paul

Ah! Glad it’s not just me who got confused about the castle location!

    Hi Louise
I presume you have visited Selworthy in the past. Perhaps next summer you could produce a video of the place. It is gorgeous.

Thank you Louise, Calne is my home town! St. Mary’s church is beautiful inside and the new bells sound great too so I hope you can get to come back one day when it’s open. Calne is also famous for the man who discovered oxygen, Joseph Priestly, 250 years ago. There’s a huge mural to mark this event on walls in the shopping precinct. The stainless steel ‘head’ sculpture has nothing to do with Calne- one of our previous town mayors commissioned it, it’s popular with some people! I’m currently on holiday in Porlock weir, it’s beautiful here in spite of the rain 😉

Ah it was Joseph! I am not good at retaining information and had to call him Mr Priestly in the video 🤣 I must look out for that mural next time I am there. Sounds fab!
That’s really interesting about the head! Thank you for that!
Oh I love Porlock Weir!! I hope you continue to have a lovely time there. 🌊
I love the walk up to Culbone Church from there.

I've driven through Calne in the past, but never been very impressed by what I've seen. There is obviously more to it away from that through road.

Yes, it’s definitely got a lot going for it away from the through road. I believe it’s been through a massive transformation since the 1980s and when the Harris bacon factory closed. I watched a really interesting video about it after I had made this video. I will probably share it on the South West Sundays Facebook page.

I was talking about trees communicating with each other. I'm told they share nutrients with other trees through their roots and also send out messages that way. Not sure how true it is 😊
