      I've noticed that if I accidentally let an ad play, they slowly get longer and longer until it's absurd lengths and amounts.
      Not only that, but the ads are usually louder than whatever I'm watching and will startle me awake sometimes.

    • @Shmandalf
      @Shmandalf 4 months ago +4

      I hate to be this guy but you really should get an ad blocker. I get that maybe your favourite content creators aren't going to get a cut, but that's youtube's doing, not my responsibility - and ad sense is only a tiny fraction of how creators earn their money anyway. Most of them earn the lions share on sponsors and merch, not adsense.

    A massive difference between TV as well is you could flip channels when ads came on, if you flip channels with twitch, you're 90% of the time just going to end up with more pre-roll ads

      In my experience, when the 3 minute ad breaks come on, if you leave for 3 minutes and go back, you avoid the ads, but if you return after 2 minutes, ir restarts, so you waste 5 minutes instead of just 3

  • @MickeyBarns
    @MickeyBarns 4 months ago +3305

    The amount of ads have just been complete bullshit. I have never once looked in an ad and thought "wow I really want that product now". When I get ads shoved down my throat that makes me actively not want that product.

    • @stingray0
      @stingray0 4 months ago +377

      I used to think the exactly same way. I thought "has this ever worked? are there actually people who see ads and think "oh! I'm buying now!" But I recently learned from a marketing friend that ads are actually not about getting people to purchase on the spot but rather to create familiarity with the brand/product because studies indicate you are 10x more likely to purchase a product you are familiar with than one you are not. So that way when you're in the store or shopping online and you come across something your brain recognizes it and makes you feel "safer" purchasing that product as opposed to the one you've never heard of.

    • @Kant3n

    • @person8064
      @person8064 4 months ago +120

      @stingray0 it's also why politicians who spend more money on campaigning are far more likely to win electrons, especially the more minor ones. People look at the ballot and see a guy they've never heard of before and a guy they've seen once on an ad and vote for the latter.

      i have built a defense mechanism where i just lose touch and wander in my thoughts. I simply don't notice anything they shove in my throat. I am also less and less using apps and more and more my PC with every scripts i need to just ignore the bs. @KewaiiGamer he literally cannot stream without having ads. twitch does not allow that. the bare minimum of ads you can do per hour is 30 seconds and thats what he has set. But if you have your ads that low, then twitch on their own force the viewers to watch other ads when they enter the stream. Do not be an idiot

      GREAT observation. You’re not missing anything when watching tv, there’s a set time for ads. On twitch it just randomly plays and it ruins the watch experience. They make ads unbearable to gradually force people into paying to remove them. Then, once enough people do and their ad revenue takes a hit, they add ads to the paid versions. Until it's loaded and unbearable, then, you guessed it, they will make another paid ad free tier, and the pattern continues until we are all broke and homeless.

    I resonate with this immensely. I'm a small streamer, for people to get pre-roll ads to my streams without any knowledge about who I am or what I do is INCREDIBLY detrimental. Like imagine just selecting a random streamer on twitch to see what they have to offer and then you have to watch like 3 minutes, 3 MINUTES, of ads to even have a taste. I have always had my ads at 30 seconds, like Charlie had shown, the lowest selectable lengths of ads but I still think it is an incredible bottleneck to my stream and to my audience. I think it really needs to change, and it's sad to see that it's happening to RUclips as well.

    • @kroveris

      @alien_liwil ideally YT won't NEED to do that, because it already screws over viewers with ads on regular vids. Twitch only has streams to monetize, not a whole video platform. And, the streams on YT can be saved as VODs, so YT makes up for that revenue by slapping ads on the VODs

      I don't mind that so much, I'd rather they cram their ads in when viewers aren't paying attention or just aren't there, instead of trying to watch someone I like and getting 3 minutes of straight ads. Also helps if I like someone and leave the tab open so they can get some ad money

    The solution is to have ads be present, but non-intrusive. They could easily solve this problem by having ads perpetually silently playing in a ribbon below the stream video. That way, Twitch gets their ads, and the audience gets their uninterrupted stream.

    • @luckdeep7438
      @luckdeep7438 4 months ago +42

      They do that on top of the pre roll ads. It’s mostly just the fact that streamers are kind of in control of whether or not they enable pre rolls. If a stream is running pre roll ads it’s either the streamer does it for their own gain or twitch pressures the to run it

    • @znorel1895
      @znorel1895 4 months ago +79

      God I miss ribbons. They were bad long ago and probably still are as any ad. But considering the wretched slop they throw in your face and dare to call it an ad, Id much prefer that it only took 5-10% of the screen and didn’t melt my eyes and ears with utter mulch.

    • @w1mark275
      @w1mark275 4 months ago +19

      Likely advertisers like to make their ads as intrusive as possible because they want people to complain about their ads, because that's how they know they're working ontop of the other privacy invading measures they already do to make sure that their ads are targeted to the select group they believe are suspectable to them.

      Kai's entire stream is just begging for subs. He won't change

      most of his viewers are bots there is a reason he wasnt streaming when the bots started getting banned

      @Zac_Cole lowkey I didn’t even think of that cus mafiathon 3 came wayyyy to soon and that looked fishy

      @Zac_Cole 4 months ago +6

      @Left4Survival1 yeah and i know most people don't like ludwig and his takes but as he said about having enough money to live a very comfortable life and he'd rather make good content and put on events like streamer games than do another subathon and make his viewers feel like they've to pay for him to go live. And there's kai out here making more money than ludwig and still doing his third subathon when his last one was like 9 months ago.

    2:46 ads here been atrocious. I can’t even go 5 minutes straight without ads. Sometimes barely minutes of the beginning of a video and boom ads

      I’m only guessing RUclips try to dump ads to persuade users to get premium 🤷🏻‍♂️ but idk what would I know

      Most physical newspapers these days are half ads and the other half are articles from the AP, which you can get for free

      That actually makes sense

    • @WeakBonez
      @WeakBonez 4 months ago

      @zephyrblayze yeah but you can easily look past an ad on a newspaper. You are forced to watch ads on websites.

      Physical newspapers make sense again because you can instantly go to the content you want.

    • @michaelwarenycia7588
      @michaelwarenycia7588 4 months ago +1

      @zephyrblayzebut they can't force you to read the ads for many minutes until you can get to the content. Just move your eyeballs.

      that’s actually charlies doing lol, probably ironically.
      But idk why he’s saying youtube live ads are crazy when that’s 10000% his fault. you can set it to no ads, one per hour, etc. I’m gonna assume he does 1 ad every 5 minutes like most youtube streamers, if ppl are complaining.
      if he’s trying to infer that youtube is “spamming ads” on his livestreams, he is lying.
