Please people use a black rope, two black bags and learn counter-balancing

I don't know how they came up with these distances, but six feet from the trunk is nowhere near far enough away. Trust me, I know from personal experience.

      I heard 15' up, 10' out, 6' down

@@phorest That is what they say, but a small black bear will be able to climb out to get it. I've had it happen. Luckily the fish were biting that trip.

Bear are learning to follow the line back down and biting through it or clawing it to drop the bag. Perhaps the PCT method might be better??

Good example of PCT method: ruclips.net/video/8_H1RmZSFSQ/видео.html

The only time I tried this method the bear had a midnight snack and *nothing* was left, not even the cans. I'm very surprised to see this officially recommended. Counterbalance is the way [if you can't use a cannister]. [I was also in California.]

Both of these methods would be defeated easily by Sierra bears here in California. These methods are in fact illegal in most parts of the Sierra. Get a bear canister. PCT method is better and the counter balance method is the best. If you have to tie off to a tree it will be dinner for our bears.
