I drew with a mouse for almost 6 years and only got a tablet recently. I wouldn't say it's that hard, but it does have quite a learning curve because there aren't many programs or tutorials that are mouse-artists friendly and it really depends on the artstyle, I assume. I still can't draw clean lines with it because I have yet to get used to it but I do think my art looks more natural/less stiff with it and I'm not as restricted as I used to with a mouse. Wacom is not bad, but I felt like other companies deserves a mention because of their quality for a beginner friendly-price, and I def have better experience with my New 1060Plus (my first tablet that I mentioned) than my brother's first edition of Intuos Small. I'd love to get one of the smaller Huion GT156 or XP-Pen Display 12 if I ever get a screen tablet in the future, but the VEIKK one doesn't sound as bad too.

Hello, thanks for awesome video! Recently I`ve thought about buying my first graphical tablet (rather something cheaper). I`ve seen a bunch of reviews of Huion tablets, like 640p (smaller one), HS610 and 950p. I can`t decide, should i buy HS610 or 950p. They are quite similar size, both have enough shortcut keys, they use similar pen technology and have tilt support. But the HS610 model also has that scrolly-wheely-thing (not sure how do you call this). I heard that it can be used to change the brush size and zoom in and out. The main problem is, i don`t know is it very useful or/and convenient thing. On top of that, i really dont like the design of HS610 (idk, just personal preference). I think, it`s worth adding, that I`ve always been interested in art (especially digital), but i really never picked up pencil and paper. Now i am 18 and i successfully got into university, but i would like to also pursue drawing as an additional skill. What i mean is that I don`t have intention to make career as an artist, but i think it might be a really good hobby. After exams i`ll have plenty of time and i want to spend some of it studying some fundamentals. The point is, I need something for solid start as a complete beginner in art, but i don`t want to spend a lot. It would be very helpful if you will give some recommendations for me. Thank you very much for reading this, i need your opinion :)
Hi i’m a beginner transitioning from trad. and considering to get a drawing tablet, but i’m not sure whether i should get a pen display or pen tablet? thank you :)

@@grabbitt So, is this something harder and much different than when using a graphic tablet? I am completley new to this and I would buy a display tablet from start. Thanks again.
I see you say this needs updating (i.e. VEIKK A50 unavailable on Amazon UK) - any imminent plans? I would like to buy a not terrible expensive (maybe £40-70) tablet (without display) . Some things I would like to know include.. - About Nib wear (consumables like that annoy me, especially because the tablet is just a play thing and not a work thing. Do all tablets use consumable nibs, how long do they last on average) - Pen cross comparability / availability (such as loss, and nib availability-> your experience) - Cable length, can regular USB extension cables be used without issue - Glove requirement - Lower pen pressure 2k 4k - 3D (art package) product comparability
Have you tried the Huion Kamvas Pro 16? If so what's your opinion? I'm trying to learn to sculpt in blender for the purpose of making models to 3d print.
How would you compare the Huion H610 Pro V2 vs Veikk A50 other than what you talked about? (build quality & tilt support) maybe the Huion have slightly more response time or sensitivity? Thanks in advance.
Hi Grant, i saw you video about the Huion 1060p i just bought one on black friday, and i'm loving it, but right now i'm finding a new problem, i simply don't know how to start sculpting, like i saw some videos, i made them, but when i try to look on doing something by myself i find myself frozen, simply not knowing how to start. I was looking on ArtStation for some drawing that i could sculpt, the "simple" one that i found was this one www.artstation.com/artwork/xzDyvO but then me a voice in my head keeps saying it's too dificult, there's fur and any other excuses that i can find and then i simple don't do anything. How did you started doing sculpt and what was the first things you tried doing by yourself?
Hey i know im a bit late but i just wanted to ask if the veikk tablets texture feels toothy, a bit like paper and sort of comparable to wacoms tablets. I am scared that if the texture is too slippery it will be harder to get the lines down more precisely. Thank you in advance!

So I have a question: I want to get a graphics tablet that I can use for osu! and digital art that’s under $150. For the most part, I’ve narrowed it down to the CTH-480 and this (CTL4100). So it seems like the easy decision would be to go with the CTH-480 because so many ranked players use it and there are so many great reviews about it. My only issue is this: it’s nine years old, whereas the newer Intuos (CTH-4100) just came out last year. Are there any advantages to the 4100 besides the fact that it is newer? Will the 480 be outdated soon? Is it still good for digital art? Thanks.
If you are referring to weather or not it has any input lag, then I have read that the CTH-480 has less input lag (almost none) than the CTL-4100. I think the CTL-4100 has more pressure levels; the CTH-480 has 1024. Is that enough? I’m leaning towards the CTH-480; again, just worried it may be outdated since it’s old. Thanks for replying!
I have an old intuos4 that I use for sculpting. I replaced the drawing surface thinking I'd get the roughness you feel with the pen back and I did get it back, but after a couple of weeks, the surface was smooth again. Do the display tablets also go smooth after some use?

Okay. In the Graphics Tablet category do you feel the Wacom's are worth the extra if you are going for the more cost friendly less than $100 range? Or does one of the ones you mentioned have much more drawing area/etc while still being almost as good as a Wacom to the point that it's a great cheaper choice?
it was a little too awkward to set up but thanks for thinking of me. are you thinking display model or general graphics tablet. For the general i now recommend the one by wacom
i second what grant said, unless you're at davinci levels of mastery the pressure levels won't even cross your mind, just forget about it and enjoy the tablet as is. If something happens to it, then do some more research as new ones come out rather quickly lately, but for now, just use it till you feel it's right to replace it
I can't get a straight answer from huion. Can you save multiple shortcuts on multiple applications or do you have to redo shortcuts when you open a new program every time. There are different shortcuts for different programs . Trying to buy a tablet but I keep getting different answers.
@@grabbitt Hey Grant! is update coming soon? I thinking to buy graphic tablet, your cheap + favorite is still same ? Veik a15? should i wait your new Recommendations?
Ipad is almost useless for 3d, there really aren't any good Sculpting apps. You can turn the ipad into a Display Tablet for your Mac, but not for a Windows pc. However, if you want to use it for digital drawings/paintings it is fantastic. There are already a number of manga and comic artist that have switched to ipad because it competes against the higher level Wacoms. The $400 2018 Ipad is also very competent, so if you are looking to get your feet wet with something that has high resell value, 2018 ipad might be it.
Display tablet plug into your computer like a monitor so will use whatever your computer has installed. You can get all in one display tablets which are computers as well like the mobile studio pro so it's a pc all by itself but they are expensive.

Perhaps go for the wacom one. It would suit your needs
@@grabbitt Thanks for the response, but i think Wacom kinda expensive and lacks some features..
Hi i’m a beginner transitioning from trad. and considering to get a drawing tablet, but i’m not sure whether i should get a pen display or pen tablet? thank you :)
Display tablets are better but more expensive
Hi. One Question pls. At 8:55, explain pls, on display tablets do I have to keep the pen away from the screen and not touch it? I didn t get it what you said about that paralex. Thanks!
you have to tap the screen with the pen
@@grabbitt So, is this something harder and much different than when using a graphic tablet? I am completley new to this and I would buy a display tablet from start. Thanks again.
I see you say this needs updating (i.e. VEIKK A50 unavailable on Amazon UK) - any imminent plans?
I would like to buy a not terrible expensive (maybe £40-70) tablet (without display) . Some things I would like to know include..
- About Nib wear (consumables like that annoy me, especially because the tablet is just a play thing and not a work thing. Do all tablets use consumable nibs, how long do they last on average)
- Pen cross comparability / availability (such as loss, and nib availability-> your experience)
- Cable length, can regular USB extension cables be used without issue
- Glove requirement
- Lower pen pressure 2k 4k
- 3D (art package) product comparability
I'll sort this soon
Have you tried the Huion Kamvas Pro 16? If so what's your opinion? I'm trying to learn to sculpt in blender for the purpose of making models to 3d print.
not tried that one but heard good things
How would you compare the Huion H610 Pro V2 vs Veikk A50 other than what you talked about? (build quality & tilt support) maybe the Huion have slightly more response time or sensitivity? Thanks in advance.
Apart from what I mentioned there is nothing more to say
@@grabbitt thanks for the very fast reply! 😊
Would you recommend these for beginners or for beginners to first get comfortable in the program first?
Yes get used to the programme a little but i would get one fairly early personally
Wacom intuos for blender on Mac is ok?
For drawing without computer now ipad pro is very good and reliable
yes in my experience it has worked well
Grant Abbitt thanks!
How did you started doing sculpt and what was the first things you tried doing by yourself?
if you are starting out it is best to keep it simple. Start with a face and build from there in my opinion :)
Hey i know im a bit late but i just wanted to ask if the veikk tablets texture feels toothy, a bit like paper and sort of comparable to wacoms tablets. I am scared that if the texture is too slippery it will be harder to get the lines down more precisely. Thank you in advance!
I dont really notice much difference with the surface it can just be a little squeaky
Hi Grant....I'm curious how your mobile studio handles blender sculpting. Is there any slowdown, I have been looking at the HP zbook x2. They are close in price. I want to get something that will be mobile with out buying a normal laptop. Could you do a demo of your mobilestudio? Thanks...
Yes I'll do that at some point. I use it in a lot of my sculpting videos 😃
Should I buy a huion 4k or Xp pen 2k? I want to get into digital art and use clip studio paint
I prefer xp pen personally
a tablet is also in my eyes a good choice for designing sth, but regarding blender I have a problem ...
I use SHIFT + left MB and shift for move navigation, CTRL + left MB for scale navigation and can rotate using only the left MB on my pen
BUT ...
how shall I use your great tips like (in edit mode) CTRL R when I doNt have a mouse wheel?? is there a solution or better a "nicer" wacom shortcut setting?
thx in advance! stef
bracket keys I think
@@grabbitt indeed only the number keys ... 4 for 4 subs ... thx
Grant Abbitt Hi for display tablet for sure Wacom its first but you recommended if i want order display tablet Huion Kamvas GT or VEIKK VK1560 ? i mean after Wacom which one in second category please ? and for me i am left hand user as writing or drawing on paper or everythnigs i am using left hand not right hand , for left hand which one work ? thank you Grant.
Very good question about the left handed. It's worth doing a bit more research as i have not checked this. For me i felt the veikk was great so it's a good choice in my opinion. I have not had a chance to try the kamvas so maybe look at a few other reviews for that one :) I was really impressed with the veikk and especially the price
@@grabbitt OK Grant thanks for your advice , and for veikk i will check if its work for left hand user for me if work i will order it , by the way all tools come with it in one package or others will order separately . Thanks Grant

I just care for the one that works on Linux. Any recommendation? Not having Windows at the moment.
@@rous3369 Yeah, I know about Wacom but I don't like the price. I'll try Huion with digimend drivers then. Thanks for answering!
@@qianbang_ Yup, I got Huion DWH69 Wireless tablet and it works fine on Linux :)
Which should I buy?
VEIKK A50
or
XP Pen Deco 01 V2
not much in it really
the first thing to consider for most of us is cost
Blender - which device do you use the most? Do you utilize a tablet exclusively in Blender?
Only when painting or sculpting
Hey Grant, are you planning on updating this guide? I am planning in getting a Tablet soon myself, for my birthday in one month; and it would be usefully to know what has changed, what is the current "meta(?)" and so on. Thanks in advance, whenever it happens!
Yes I am hoping to soon
@@grabbitt wow, thanks for the reply! I am planning on getting a huion or wacom graphic tablet board, though it seems like huion has some quality problems, would be good if you go into that a bit too! 😀
Thanks.
Maybe just look up the response times as that might be the deciding factor for you
If you are referring to weather or not it has any input lag, then I have read that the CTH-480 has less input lag (almost none) than the CTL-4100. I think the CTL-4100 has more pressure levels; the CTH-480 has 1024. Is that enough? I’m leaning towards the CTH-480; again, just worried it may be outdated since it’s old. Thanks for replying!
dont think its outdated so i would go for it myself :)
Ok, thanks, that’s reassuring! I think I will go with that one.
I have an old intuos4 that I use for sculpting. I replaced the drawing surface thinking I'd get the roughness you feel with the pen back and I did get it back, but after a couple of weeks, the surface was smooth again. Do the display tablets also go smooth after some use?
I have not noticed this personally
Can every tablet use blender?????? And which ones can run by themselves
Yes most tablets are fine in blender
great review
Thanks :)
Hi Grant i was wondering if a huion kamvas 12 would work with a lenovo ideapad, 4gb, n4020. My son has krita on it so its to go with that. thanks. m
It should do yes
@@grabbitt Thanks
Hi, iam thinking about buying a tablet but i dont have that much money. So i watched some videos and what do you think about the One by Walcom? Its cheap and dont have these buttons (which i donnt need).
It seems pretty good
The Veikk Tablet that you suggested.. does it have tilt support?
No
Hey Grant, I want to buy graphics tablet my main problem is I am using Linux (manjaro ) only some tablet support Linux . please suggest something.
i dont use linux to know but i imagine wacom one is probably suitable
@@grabbitt thanks I bought Wacom one it works out of the box in my Linux machine .
Do you have a particular tablet style preference when 3D sculpting?
display tablet
What do you think of the Wacom One display tablet?
Sounds good
If you want to use these for a 3d animation, like in Maya for example, can any display tablet work for that?
Yes
how about ipad pro? i know it is expensive, but can it replace all of your best recommendations?
unfortunately not as running something like a 3d application is not really feasible. But i have heard it is very good for 2d work
Hi i like your video and you give me some ideas before i buy i try to see some videos and yours is so interesting this digital tablet is good for 3d design?
(HUION Kamvas GT-191 Pen Tablet Monitor 8192 Pressure Levels 19.53 Inch)
Yes I have heard it's good but never tried it:)
An oldie but goodie, thks again;
I'll be mainly taking notes so MS Surface Pro7 or bust
But I just might try some cool arty kinda stuff though (it's never to late ;)
Oh ?Could you make an art for newbies/dumbies playlist like me? If you already have one, ??Could you name it so I can easily find it (something really conspicious like 'art for newbies/dumbies' ;)??
Thkssssss
I think I have a beginners guide playlist but it might not suit
Can you suggest wheather i should go for veikk a50 or veikk a15. I wanted to use it for blender.
i'd probably go with the a15 as it's a little more sturdier and looks like it will last longer
@@grabbitt Thanks man i also saw your gaomon s620 review is that comparable to a15. Also can you suggest me websites to buy them as they are not available on Amazon (India).
@@alexanderwei4189 I dont think it's as good as the a15 but it does work on mobile. unfortunately I dont know of any websites for you in India but maybe join the discord server as there are a few people more local to you that could advise :)
I'm not a professional photographer. For fine retouching in Lightroom or Photoshop which Tablets is much more suitable, Graphic Tablet or Display Tablet .
probably just a graphics tablet
actually come to think of it display tablet
is the graphic tablet good for motion graphics or anything in graphic design except digital art?
i would say so yes but its up to the user
@@grabbitt i am the user
I have a question please
If i buy it the workflow will be easier than now?
Do I need a screen protector for a display tablet (drawing monitor)?
no
Thanks a Lot
:)
So you wouldn't recommend the Wacom drawing tablets?
yes but they are very expensive however the wacom one looks good and not as much now
Okay. In the Graphics Tablet category do you feel the Wacom's are worth the extra if you are going for the more cost friendly less than $100 range? Or does one of the ones you mentioned have much more drawing area/etc while still being almost as good as a Wacom to the point that it's a great cheaper choice?
@@protostar8 others are a little bigger but you get a trusted brand with wacom
Thank you for taking time to respond sir!
If you include Amazon Canada I'd buy my drawing tablet through
Your link. Also is this, current? Thanks Grant you are the best.
it was a little too awkward to set up but thanks for thinking of me. are you thinking display model or general graphics tablet. For the general i now recommend the one by wacom
@@grabbitt Cool thanks again Grant. Canada is always more difficult lol. I Appreciate the information, and your time.
Oh damn, I bought the Gaomon M106K a week ago and now I find your buyer guide x_x It has only 2000 levels
you wont notice the difference to be honest so dont worry
i second what grant said, unless you're at davinci levels of mastery the pressure levels won't even cross your mind, just forget about it and enjoy the tablet as is.
I don't think u can set buttons for different programmes
Sir can I use display tablets with my laptop?..because I have no computer. But I have a laptop. (Hp i7)
yes
Can I use my ipad for this kind of stuff?
Apparently you can
Please give us an update would appreciate it
Yes will do
@@grabbitt Hey Grant! is update coming soon? I thinking to buy graphic tablet, your cheap + favorite is still same ? Veik a15? should i wait your new Recommendations?
I want to buy xp pen g 640s, does this work for blender?
I think so
Ipad is almost useless for 3d, there really aren't any good Sculpting apps.
Thanks for the info.
2020 best graphic tablet
wacom one or xp pen
Great breakdown. For the Display tablets, how exactly do these "integrate" with blender. I'm assuming blender doesn't get installed on them, correct?
Display tablet plug into your computer like a monitor so will use whatever your computer has installed. You can get all in one display tablets which are computers as well like the mobile studio pro so it's a pc all by itself but they are expensive.

hi.... {i want ur advice}
i am an enthusist artist { i can be counted decent visual arist with pensil and water paint} i want to transition into digital art to improve my rate in producing art. ... but i am in africa! ..[east africa].
so i can at the most get a huion420 @ $35 {not include delivery). that would be idle tech. but being an IT professional it has limitd other use. so i opted to get an led drawing tablet[generic] ($5) and pen opitcal mouse[generic]($6) {total $11.5 include delivery). the idea is to flip the problem of input.: instead of the graphic pad being the input the mouse is the input and the led is feedback on my stoke. since i use linux this would pose no compatibility issue. the delivery is yet to arrive ...
as such ... what do u thinking would be things i would need to think of as i go into blender and gimp for animation given the setup i have{will} and what i intend to but later [(postcovid) huion]. .... {[insert advice??]}
it might be a problem with pressure sensitivity which is very useful i would personally go for the tablet
