Again and again, biodiversity is important for unprecedented challenge. We need to preserve it.

Love Liberica. I came across a cafe called Constant Gardener Coffee that has been selling Liberica beans in the last 4 or 5 years for espresso and pour over. It's such a different coffee. Grown at 100m above sea level 😂 in the tropics. ONA coffee in Australia sells them. So awesome.

It's good that we have found more species that will work. Humans are very good at changing and mastering the control over plants, we've done it for centuries.

Can't they just genetically modify Arabica to withstand heat and parasites? Its not the first time, botanist created a new subspecies of plants adapted to different climatic zones, they did it almost routinely earlier times.

Probably, they have done it with so many other plants, but I do see some problems in doing so. First you need more time in order to produce this new coffee plant, such that it is only these specific traits you change. Then distribute them to the farmers and convince them this will save them. But this is likely only in the short term. They would likely have to label their coffee as GMO, something that is looked down upon in large parts of the Western World. Decreasing a large market for the farmer.
With the wild coffee plants like Stenopylla you already have the plant, with the properties they look after. On top there is at least 100 more out there, that could have desirable traits. Just as at the start, if they brand it well, they could make the act of drinking Coffee Stenophylla a status symbol. Just like how it is right now with Arabica and Robusta. It also sounds more environmentally friendly to use a natural plant, no matter if that actually is the case.

      Yes.
But than they can’t scare you into doing things they don’t want to or will not do.
Make your “carbon footprint” smaller. They’ll keep flying around the world, driving their big motorcades.
They expect you to stop all this yourself tho.

It doesnt really matter though. Those people will be fine regardless of what we do, and we will be fucked without action. So even small action is worth taking.
Every single decision you make will contribute or take away from/to the time that humanity has to find a solution to survive the upcoming extinction.

I can't stand Coffee but am all for preservation & biodiversity of heirloom species of most crops as this story shows putting your Egg's in one basket is dangerous mono-culture farming is one of the dumbest so called advances in horticulture but we keep making the same mistakes over & over & i will stick to a nice cup/pot of Dark Tea.
