@@ChocolateBoxCottage I am checking out sources for the seeds right now to do that. I have some sprouts on my kitchen table I am growing to put out into the garden and wondering what they might taste like...lol.
Could you use bags of bird seed? They usually have a variety of seeds and grains. Wonder if they are treated with anything before being packaged? Could you also throw the soil with because stems to the chickens?
Hi Robert, most commercial birdseed these days is heat pasteurized to prevent sprouting because people didn't like "weeds" growing under their bird feeder. And you would have no way of knowing what else it is treated with since it is not packaged for human consumption. Seeds for this are not expensive. Hi! I’m here from Mary’s Nest. I really enjoyed learning from you, today :) I’d love to see more, as well. The popcorn seeds, especially. So far though, I know I wanna try the broccoli & sunflowers, to start. Thanks for keeping it simple for beginners. Oh, I do have a question about the paper lids. The ink from the printed pages, I assume aren’t an issue? 🦋💞
Hi Diane, welcome over from Mary's Nest! Sunflowers and broccoli are delicious. You'll enjoy them. Since broccoli seeds are tiny, use just 1 teaspoon per soup bowl. Thanks for the request about additional greens, I'll work on another video. About the ink on the pages...ink used these days is safe, not like the old days. Love, Michele
Can you also do bean sprouts? Pinto beans? black beans? Black eyed peas? Do you plant popcorn, like regular popcorn that you would buy at the grocers? Such a good informative video, I subscribed today. Thank you. (Mary Anne Record) Gary's wife.
Good questions, Mary Anne. I have grown some but not all of those, so I will add them to my list to try. Thank you! Yes, popcorn like you pop for a snack. It does need to be fresh enough to sprout. Older popcorn that has been sitting at the store for a couple of years may not do as well as popcorn purchased from a seed company that supplies microgreen growers. The flavor of popcorn shoots is intriguing. Sweet, with a hint of maple. So good! Thank you for subscribing! Love, Michele PS. Hi, I found you at Marys nest, so thankful! I harvested alot of my coriander seed from last fall, would that work? Also my green arrow pea seeds? Or do you have to buy specific brand of seeds? Thankyou and God bless you and yours😊
Hi Lyn, I have not tried coriander seeds, but it's on my list to try. If you do, let me know how it goes. You can use your saved pea seeds. Hello! I'm intrigued- this is totally new, but very fascinating to me! I'm starting a garden but never heard of growing sprouts! I see you have links to various seed companies... can any seeds be used? I imagine I'd run out of seeds quickly if i use packets... probably a silly question, but this is really new to me! Great information! How does this work in your schedule? That is - if you want a daily salad, do you pretty much need to plant seeds on a daily basis so that you can harvest daily? How often do you plant?
Hi Sally, when all of our kids were home I planted every other day; now that it's just two of us I plant 4-6 bowls 2-3 times a week. There is always something ready to harvest this way. You might start with planting 4 bowls 1-2 times a week and then adjust according to your needs. Soon you will find more ways to use and enjoy your greens and your consumption will go up - which is a good thing. Love, Michele PS. Be sure to read the blog post and print the Supply List and 7-Step Guide: chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/
So this morning, I was going to order seeds but it’s not so easy as they aren’t ALL from one source. Would you agree? From your supply list, it appears 1) Johnny’s, 2) Azure, 3) high mowing, 4) sprout people, then a huge jump in price to 5) starwest. I’m having trouble finding the buckwheat seeds. …. Finally decided on Johnny’s seeds, good price, don’t have to wait til October like with Azure, and found most of what you suggested. I also bought the broccoli one! Are celery, carrots, and broccoli harder to grow? (Also here from Mary’s nest suggestion). ❤
So, what do you think of the new hydroponic gardens? Basically a columnar tube with spots for plants. I don’t feel that anyone has graciously covered this subject like you so graciously are covering a subject here.
I am not knowledgeable on the subject of hydroponic planters. They may be a wonderful way for some folks to have a garden though gardening without soil has always seemed counterintuitive to me. Michele
Oh goodness, no apology needed! That is a good question. Most of the seed hulls fall off on their own. I make a habit of gently brushing my hand over the sprouts whenever I water to help dislodge the hulls and any that don't fall off I pull off just before harvesting. ~ Michele
Hey Michele, hopefully you will see this comment since I noticed that your post was 5 months ago. Can I just use the non-GMO, organic seeds that I already have on hand to try this out or do I need to purchase specific seeds? I would like to try it before investing in more seeds. Thanks! Love your video, very informative!! About to watch part 2! 😁
Hi Cindy! It depends on what kind of seeds you have. I recommend starting with the ones shown in the video because they grow quickly and at about the same rate, and produce a good "head" of greens. Not all seeds perform the same. The system works if you follow it as shown. Here's a link to the printable guide. Love, Michele chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/
Hi Claudia, thank you for your question. I experimented with using coffee filters. They are too thin and unfortunately allow the seeds to dry out, so I don't recommend using them. It might work to layer 4 coffee filters together, if you want to try. 🌸 Michele

I love this! Please share more seeds!
Oh thank you! I'm working on another video right now! 🌸🌱Love, Michele
Hi Just come over from Mary's nest! Will try this with the bowls next, my mustard and cress are laying flat in a seedlings tray not growing upright ( not all of them very short stems ). Thanks for your video❤
Have fun with it, Sue. I think you will find indoor salad gardening to be enjoyable and satisfying as well as delicious. Here is a link to the blog post on my website with printable Supply List and 7-Step Guide. chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/ I am actually growing mustard in bowls right now! Cress works nicely, too. Thank you for coming over from Mary's Nest. She is a blessing and a sweetheart - and I suspect you are, too. Michele
@@ChocolateBoxCottage much appreciated Michele ❤
I love this and it grows fast, so I think it would be a great project for my Littles and maybe get them to be willing to eat more greens
Good idea. Kids are often more willing to eat food they have had a hand in making or growing. Plus, it's fun! ~Michele
Love, Michele

Great video!
Hi Cari, thank you! ~Michele
Be sure to read the blog post and print the Supply List and 7-Step Guide: chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/
Question what do you do with what is left in bowl? Compost and use fresh each time?
Can you use any peas((split peas)) are some plants stems and leaves toxic ?
Looking good!
Thanks!
Saving your own seeds for growing greens in your indoor salad garden is excellent - it's my goal. ~Michele

👏👌Thanks for sharing those great tips en tricks 😁💝
Thank you very much… I definitely want to try this. As I have been learning to sprout, ferment, pickle and sourdough..I heard about you from Mary’s nest.. I didn’t wanting to do the micro greens for quite a while, but was thinking of it on a bigger scale… But a small production is all I need..I have a hard time keeping greens, as I’m not able to go out to get them. So thank you very much. This will be so helpful. Lord Jesus bless you.
Thank you for the blessing, Pamela! This is so doable and enjoyable. It really is satisfying to produce your own ongoing supply of greens indoors. Get your salad station set up and have fun with it. 🌱🥗 Michele

Amazing and beautiful. Thanks so much!
You're welcome and thank you for your sweet compliment, Mimi! Blessings, Michele
Love to try this, but I have limited space to store all the stuff.
Hi Janet, I understand. Take a look at the blog post photo and Supply List to get a visual idea of what you need to store. You don't need a tote full of seeds like I have. Just 4 will keep you in delicious greens.chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/ You can make it as minimal and space-efficient as you need it to be. ~Michele
This was great! Thanks for sharing.
You're so welcome. It's very doable, I hope you set up your own indoor salad garden. 🥗 Michele
Do you have any particular nurseryu or such that you think have better seeds? I am knew to gardening and farm to table thought process but I am over the price of things and my family suffering because food is outrageous. I built a full blown green house in my back yard to you use that?
I love your channel! Do you live in the US? I also subscribe to Mary’ Nest and Josh and Carolyn’s channel.
I'm excited!!
Hi! I really recommend starting with the four basic seeds I shared here. They are proven to grow quickly and produce a bounty of greens. Here is a link to my post with printable shopping list and 7-Step Guide to get you going. ~Michele chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/
I would love to see the seeds one wouldn’t think to use such as the buckwheat and popcorn!
Hi Kate, buckwheat was covered in this video. It is a superb salad green! I did a second video and it includes popcorn. :) Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/8tg1eKoF9B4/видео.html ~Michele
I should try these. I do sprouts. But I usually end up feeding them to my chickens.
Oh no, "should" takes all the fun out of it, Jeannie! Only do it if it truly sounds appealing. I love my little indoor salad garden and want you to love it, too. Especially during the months the outdoor garden isn't producing, it is a blessing to have a continuous supply of fresh, nutritious greens because we rely more on stored/preserved food. Love, Michele
@@ChocolateBoxCottage I agree. I'll have to set it up for next year. I seedlings everywhere right now. It's too funny! And just bought in 50 chick's to the porch in 2 brooders! All red Rangers! 1 more brooder will be filled starting Saturday with my incubator hatch. ❤❤🐓🐔
@@thepreparedqueen that's wonderful, we all have to prioritize projects as there are only so many hours in a day! You are doing so many wonderful things, Jeannie.
@@ChocolateBoxCottage Thank you! And I just picked up a few more breeding rabbits for my homestead. I should have enough diversity and girls to keep my dogs in meat all year now. Let's the fun begin!!!!!
Love, Michele

@@ChocolateBoxCottage Thanks so much Michele! I appreciate your advice. And I very much enjoy your videos!
I am so sorry to hear it's been difficult to get the seeds. I'm working on a solution. Thank you for trying and for persisting. 🌸
Michele
Are you pulling “holes” or hulls off? What do they look like? Sorry, new here and to gardening esp inside. Ty! 🌱
Oh goodness, no apology needed! That is a good question. Most of the seed hulls fall off on their own. I make a habit of gently brushing my hand over the sprouts whenever I water to help dislodge the hulls and any that don't fall off I pull off just before harvesting. ~ Michele
If you see mold in soil after you cut shoots did you say that you should not eat shoots?
Right. If there is mold, compost those and wash the bowl(s) in hot, soapy water with a little vinegar to kill any spores. ~Michele
Would used coffee filtters work for the cover paper?
Hi Claudia, thank you for your question. I experimented with using coffee filters. They are too thin and unfortunately allow the seeds to dry out, so I don't recommend using them. It might work to layer 4 coffee filters together, if you want to try. 🌸 Michele
Tell me more please
Hi Aisha, I'll share the link to the printable supply list and planting guide. You probably have most of what you need in the house. ~ Michele chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/
Did i understand that correctly? You sprouted... Popcorn?
That's right, Elizabeth. I know it sounds strange, but popcorn grows edible shoots when grown in the dark of a closed cupboard. I share how to do this in Indoor Salad Garden Part 2. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/8tg1eKoF9B4/видео.html
That is FANTASTIC! Thanks for the link.
Started mine TODAY!!!!! Soaked for 7 hrs. Now planted! 🪴🌱 (Johnnys seeds, and HAPPY FROG 🐸 soil) ❤
Congratulations, I'm thrilled for you! Enjoy your indoor garden! 🌱👩🏼🌾 Michele
I just checked 3 days, and some have growth UNDER the wet napkin which is dry by now. For some reason, I thought it grew thru the paper. 😂😂😂 looking at video, I see you did remove, lol. I also, really want to add water, but I’m resisting!
Leaving it under for a bit longer 1-2 more days 🤞🏻
They died. I think too much Sun, not enough water in soil in the beginning and maybe even the size of bowl were factors.
Will try again soon.
@@windy42305 was your soil pre-moistened? If not, you would need to water lightly. ~Michele
