I have been a Spica fan for quite a lot of years now. Jiwon was always the "visual" which meant people expected her to have weak vocals. I keep coming back to this video, just because I'm so happy she's still pursuing her dream. Anyone who has seen at least a few Spica live performances would know that they're the vocal queens of kpop.
Matty Its like how it was said in the video. Spica was never that popular. There was always the threat that they were going to disband which is unfortunate because all the members are fantastic singers. They kept barely surviving until lee hyori helped promote and produce a new song (tonight). They look on the theme of retro fashion and sound. But gradually lost popularity again and their last song (secret time) didnt do so well and so their company dropped them. The members still believe in the group and want to stay togethor but nothing is certain 😔😔😔.

She wasn't even the main vocalist in Spica guys, she was the main dancer. When you have a whole groups of talented women and even your main rapper (Juhyun) and main dancer (Jiwon) are capable of being the main vocals, you know you're doing something right. What surprised me was that Jiwon decided to sing Tonight. She could have sang any other song, but she specifically decided to sing a song from the band that she used to be a part of. Like paying a tribute to something she was once a part of. That made me like her even more. Kuddos to her.

Came back to this video after 4 years this program was made. Yang Jiwon’s eyes are filled with the sparkles when she is on the stage. Her voice and the tone she sings is really beautiful and seems to tell a story, and the song “Tonight” by her group is also gorgeous. In the meantime I am depressed about everything around me, her performance saves me smile. Hope everyone joined this program can have a bright future.

I keep coming back to this audition. Even as someone who was not a fan of Spica (as I am a relatively new fan of kpop), this performance touched me deeply. I wish Jiwon the best. She's beautiful, talented, and most importantly, perseveres. I can see she's giving it her all.
Her performance made me tear up a bit. I don't even know her aside from her former group's name but she captivated me. She's hard working, talented and very pretty too. I admire her perseverance.
Wow! This reminds me of those Kdrama plots. The girl is working hard with a part time job doing deliveries while continuing to pursue her passion of singing despite failures. She seems very kind and humble. I wish her the best.
The whole spica group was good. Too bad that people don't recognise them. They were as good as mamamoo for a vocal group. I'm happy that Jiwon comes back tho 😊
Spica was better than Mamamoo. All of the members could sing very well. Jiwon was actually considered the "weakest" singer in the group, and was there partly as a visual. But this is somewhat misleading, since Jiwon is also a very good singer. Her singing was just less powerful than the other members, she's more of a finesse singer. All of the other members were powerful singers like Ailee, Hyorin or Uji. Mamamoo does have excellent singers also, but only Solar and probably Wheein are at the same level as most singers in Spica.
Spica was mismanaged by their new agency after Hyori ended her involvement with them. During that time, they ended up doing largely nothing until the decision was made to disband.
So-ra Lee Right she improved so much!!! Hate to say it but I remember her voice being my least favorite because her voice was so nasally and kinda had a lisp, compared to the others' strong voices. Now she has a more mature stronger voice. Maybe it was destined for her to debut (hopefully) later in her life. This situation would be 1000x better if all of SPICA was competing together on the Unit. They all had great voices and deserved everything in the world😢
I disagree. Jiwon could always sing this well. She just rarely got a chance to show what she could do, since she was overshadowed by all the other singers in Spica. For example, go and watch some of her live performances of Shower of Tears with Baechigi. (For this purpose, you must watch the live performances. In the MV for this song, Ailee sings on the audio track, but Jiwon is actually in the MV, and featured on most of the live performances.)
+Ashana B. She just has a different singing style. The other members were "powerhouse" singers, while hers is more "fine". It's like comparing a b-girl with a ballerina, two different styles of dance and some dancers are more suited to one over the other, but it's not very fair to compare the two.
she is so talented but it makes me sad that she isnt too greedy to prove herself on the show. she is fine with having few lines in every group she's in when in fact she is the most experienced and have the voice and face to have a major part in every mission. hopefully in the next mission she gets to shine atleast one mission.

Recently I quit my full time job and applied for a part time job just so that i could focus on writing music. This show and the stories from these contestants are so inspiring and motivating.
I can't get over how Hwang Chiyeol was so amazed by her vocal. He looks like he fall for her at 1st sight. 😁 And Taemin surprised reaction when she start dancing and getting Super Boot is really fascinating to watch.😁

remember for each successful top-tiered group, there are probably at least 10 groups that do not succeed. Mega artists usually make up only 1.1 percent of all artists. apparently 91% of all artists are usually undiscovered. it's a high-risk/high-reward type of career

To this day, I still shake my head in disbelief that SPICA disbanded. I remember being really blown away by 'Russian Roulette' and 'Lonely' when I first heard them - their voices were amazing. I was wowed by the fact that all the girls in the band could really (I mean, really) sing and each had something unique about them. I guess it just goes to show that talent is important in showbiz, but so is luck and having the right company behind you.
I would say company is the most important. Marketing monies, which shows you get on, what networks they can tap to mention you, your concept, the quality of the songs the singers can receive etc
Timing is everything, unfortunately talented groups like Spica get overshadowed by others only because of the agency they were with and how they promoted them.

this just proves that even if you're beautiful, can sing, can dance (amazing that she has all three) it's not enough in the korean entertainment industry...in any industry. you need all three along with sheer luck/stage presence. then again the job is a high-risk/high reward profile. not stable but the moment you/your group reach a certain level you yield high salary, perks, luxury
Obnoxious, but Consistent its really because of the Psy effect. Not to blame the man but korea treated entertainment like a product and shitted out so many groups left and right for money. It was a huge gamble lol.

As a huge fan of SPICA, I was actually crying while seeing Jiwon perform...I feel so sorry for the girls that they had to disband and I hope that this show will open doors for Jiwon and she can fulfill her dream :) I also hope that other SPICA members will get recognition they deserve
The audience reaction kills me, acting all surprised. She wouldn't have to be on this show if they accepted her and her Spica members and made them popular in the first place.
You can not blame the audience for not helping her group succeed. As much as we want all idols to achieve their dreams and become famous worldwide, it sadly won’t happen. There are too many groups and not everyone will like a certain group. It’s just reality
There are HUNDERDS of kpop groups, both boys and girls, debuting evry year and only approximately 1% will survive. Spica was unfortunately not one of the 1%.
I hate this side of kpop... Because she's not the only one. There have been hundreds of groups in the past ten years and barely anyone makes it to the top and stays there. And for them to go back and start all over is so heartbreaking. I mean she was an idol already and now has to do a part time job again to get by... gosh I'm so mad and sad. This industry sucks so much.
It's because they stopped getting recognition and making money. You cant just keep taking care of people who aren't doing anything for your company and their company's already broke
It's tougher in the Kpop industry because idols literally start young to train in singing, dancing, rapping, multiple languages, etc. So much to do that they can not focus so much on school. Because of that many idols don't have a good college degree to get a job after their group disbands. It's like their whole life got wasted because of the industry. It's unlike western industry where the parent can make a deal and have their child stay in school before focusing on their career. Also in the kpop industry their is accumulated debt from all the training, it isn't like that in western industry.
You can see her love and thirst for the stage. I know so many trainees crave and want the spotlight and to perform, but she's had it and lost it. I think because of it her drive but also appreciation for it is so much stronger
you can tell she's a born performer. she loves the stage, it gives her so much energy. i'm sorry that the unit didn't end up being as successful as she'd hoped, but i trust that she'll still find great success in the future
Jiwon, and SPICA in general, deserved more recognition. They were all talented, and it's a shame that they didn't get noticed enough. I'm glad Jiwon finally has a chance to shine again and show everyone what she's capable of, and she's certainly doing brilliantly!
It's so irksome that the mentor asked if she sang that way originally. SPICA was full of great voices they were amazing all around. It breaks my heart that no one really noticed them.
Missbriily I guess she said that because spica has vocalists like bohyung and boa. the rest are in my opinion above average, but when you are not a fan, you won't know because bohyung and boa are just that good.
Missbriily Jiwon is the visual in SPICA not a strong vocal line but the fact she can sing this good is probably what the mentor is actually asking about.
Unpopular Opinion: Honestly saying, SPICA was vocally way better than AOA, but SPICA decadence came because at the time, AOA good looks and sexy concepts got more attention, but their voices (spica) were stunning, I really wish they could be together now because, as you might know, she got to Debut on UNI.T but they didn't last long and disbanded, and where most of them already had groups, most of the members got to be placed on their original groups, leaving Jiwon without an established group, and I feel so bad for her, because she's stunning and her voice is amazing, her and SPICA deserved so much more and so much better...
Why you blame AOA? Mamamoo is the one that took spotlight from Spica and if not even Mamamoo, this is just their luck and destiny. Spica was my fave group too but this is their luck, if they didn't have enough loyal fans or decent fandom to support them, then that's their luck. Blaming another idol for getting popular and trashing them won't change anything. Idols in general no matter how famous they become they can lose their fame with time. I mean look at 2ne1, Bigbang and soon same will happen with BTS and the other popular groups. It is a cycle, out with the old and in with the new. Plus AOA got attention for sexy concept but so did Girls Day and Sistar. Sexy concept was trendy back in 2014 and these three groups benefited the most from it because well that is their luck. Just be grateful for everything and don't hate others because hatred is useless. Now try to at least make Jiwon successful as soloist.

It's not the first time things like this happen in the k-pop industry, where groups with vocal quality lose because companies pulled up these generic concepts on groups for the sake of their profit. Groups like Mamamoo were not based on the luck of an era, their company made them stay true to themselves and they succeeded, and I (Me, because the opinion is mine) think the same could happen with SPICA. AOA's company tried too hard to hide them on a concept that didn't match them, they lost their harmony as a group (I didn't even bring the scandal) and look at the result. Groups like 2EN1 didn't stand a chance because they were willing to stay loyal to their truth and talent - encouraging people to be themselves and not trying to make them fit on a standard to feel ok - on a company that just wanted looks and money, they didn't disband or lost fame because they wanted or just because "it happens" - they were kicked to the curb. Sexy concept may even have been a trend back then, but you have to understand that a concept like that can be built IF the person is confortable with it, and you can see that most idols that been submitted to even wear sexy outfits (Momoland, Red Velvet, etc.) were clearly uncomfortable, picture trying to pull that up for YEARS because it was "luck" (Have you seen bingle bangle or Good Luck? Those were girl crush concepts that they pulled off really well without needing that much of exposure), that's where they were standing, that's what made them fall, and I believe SPICA could really make it different, with or without AOA, but at the time, that's what happened, and they lost their chance to even prove it. I would love to suppert Jiwon, but she's back at where she was, so it can be a little hard for her.

The company always had sexy direction for AOA and it just happened to blow up with Miniskirt because the song was a bop. Every idol works hard and it took AOA over 2 years to get noticed. The company tried and pushed them hard with busking and mini concerts. I believe Spica would've done well had their company been patient and push them harder but I guess it was their luck and the past is past now. Can't change anything except wish them luck with what they do. Also, AOA might not be a vocal heavy group but they are talented, they work just as hard as other idols. I don't see often people downgrade BTS for being way too popular when they literally lack vocal ability compared to other groups even rookies. But that's another story. My point is neither AOA nor any idol should be brought down to justify why another idol was not more popular. You could've been sad about Spica situation needless of bringing AOA into this because you make it seem like AOA don't deserve their success. That's shady and unfair on both sides. I am sure Spica wouldn't want us comparing and saying another group is less talented than them yet got more popular. It serves no one.
You know if somehow Spica decides to re-debut, they won't fail this time. They'll make it big. I know that they passed the chance to be idols but they could debut as just singers. Their vocals are magnificent.
It was really sad to see the other girls at first trying to get her into their team because she was really good...and had a really good impression from both the judges and the audience. But they forgot that not everyone is perfect so when she made mistakes or had difficulties with dancing or keeping up with them, they used to ignore her...

Jiwon is such a perfect example to all of us, especially to those who are in the verge of giving up because of the countless failures they have experienced. Something just unexplainable and heart felt. So I decided to follow her on Instagram and be very supportive of her till now...happy to see she doing well and what other opportunities that's given her even UNI-T disbanded.

Jiwon here is the weakest vocal in Spica but she slays the Unit, BoHyung is on a diff level in term of vocal, BoA has that unique husky jazzy voice and even the rapper is talented at singing. Too bad the kpop industry at their time only focused on sexiness and not talents. AOA won the music program coz they switched to sexy concept. Dont feel bad Jiwon, Spica is love 💕

I AM SO GLAD that she made the final line-up. I was so worried. She has great voice and everything but she often overshadows by other people in the competition, that she often doesnt show her full capacity for most of the time.
This make my cry because Spica was a very talented and original group and mamamoo reminds me a lot of them that I was scared that one day they will forget like Spica but fortunately they are successful. It's sad how many groups that were so good and were famous but now are just a memory 😔

Matty Its like how it was said in the video. Spica was never that popular. There was always the threat that they were going to disband which is unfortunate because all the members are fantastic singers. They kept barely surviving until lee hyori helped promote and produce a new song (tonight). They look on the theme of retro fashion and sound. But gradually lost popularity again and their last song (secret time) didnt do so well and so their company dropped them. The members still believe in the group and want to stay togethor but nothing is certain 😔😔😔.

She wasn't even the main vocalist in Spica guys, she was the main dancer. When you have a whole groups of talented women and even your main rapper (Juhyun) and main dancer (Jiwon) are capable of being the main vocals, you know you're doing something right. I just still don't understand why no one else saw it and they had to disband 😤

What surprised me was that Jiwon decided to sing Tonight. She could have sang any other song, but she specifically decided to sing a song from the band that she used to be a part of. Like paying a tribute to something she was once a part of. That made me like her even more. Kuddos to her.

Came back to this video after 4 years this program was made. Yang Jiwon’s eyes are filled with the sparkles when she is on the stage. Her voice and the tone she sings is really beautiful and seems to tell a story, and the song “Tonight” by her group is also gorgeous. In the meantime I am depressed about everything around me, her performance saves me smile. Hope everyone joined this program can have a bright future.

I keep coming back to this audition. Even as someone who was not a fan of Spica (as I am a relatively new fan of kpop), this performance touched me deeply. I wish Jiwon the best. She's beautiful, talented, and most importantly, perseveres. I can see she's giving it her all.

Spica was better than Mamamoo. All of the members could sing very well. Jiwon was actually considered the "weakest" singer in the group, and was there partly as a visual. But this is somewhat misleading, since Jiwon is also a very good singer. Her singing was just less powerful than the other members, she's more of a finesse singer. All of the other members were powerful singers like Ailee, Hyorin or Uji.
Mamamoo does have excellent singers also, but only Solar and probably Wheein are at the same level as most singers in Spica.
Spica was mismanaged by their new agency after Hyori ended her involvement with them. During that time, they ended up doing largely nothing until the decision was made to disband.

So-ra Lee Right she improved so much!!! Hate to say it but I remember her voice being my least favorite because her voice was so nasally and kinda had a lisp, compared to the others' strong voices. Now she has a more mature stronger voice. Maybe it was destined for her to debut (hopefully) later in her life. This situation would be 1000x better if all of SPICA was competing together on the Unit. They all had great voices and deserved everything in the world😢
I disagree. Jiwon could always sing this well. She just rarely got a chance to show what she could do, since she was overshadowed by all the other singers in Spica. For example, go and watch some of her live performances of Shower of Tears with Baechigi. (For this purpose, you must watch the live performances. In the MV for this song, Ailee sings on the audio track, but Jiwon is actually in the MV, and featured on most of the live performances.)
+Ashana B. She just has a different singing style. The other members were "powerhouse" singers, while hers is more "fine". It's like comparing a b-girl with a ballerina, two different styles of dance and some dancers are more suited to one over the other, but it's not very fair to compare the two.

remember for each successful top-tiered group, there are probably at least 10 groups that do not succeed. Mega artists usually make up only 1.1 percent of all artists. apparently 91% of all artists are usually undiscovered. it's a high-risk/high-reward type of career

To this day, I still shake my head in disbelief that SPICA disbanded. I remember being really blown away by 'Russian Roulette' and 'Lonely' when I first heard them - their voices were amazing. I was wowed by the fact that all the girls in the band could really (I mean, really) sing and each had something unique about them. I guess it just goes to show that talent is important in showbiz, but so is luck and having the right company behind you.
I would say company is the most important. Marketing monies, which shows you get on, what networks they can tap to mention you, your concept, the quality of the songs the singers can receive etc
Timing is everything, unfortunately talented groups like Spica get overshadowed by others only because of the agency they were with and how they promoted them.

this just proves that even if you're beautiful, can sing, can dance (amazing that she has all three) it's not enough in the korean entertainment industry...in any industry. you need all three along with sheer luck/stage presence. then again the job is a high-risk/high reward profile. not stable but the moment you/your group reach a certain level you yield high salary, perks, luxury

As a huge fan of SPICA, I was actually crying while seeing Jiwon perform...I feel so sorry for the girls that they had to disband and I hope that this show will open doors for Jiwon and she can fulfill her dream :) I also hope that other SPICA members will get recognition they deserve

You can not blame the audience for not helping her group succeed. As much as we want all idols to achieve their dreams and become famous worldwide, it sadly won’t happen. There are too many groups and not everyone will like a certain group. It’s just reality
There are HUNDERDS of kpop groups, both boys and girls, debuting evry year and only approximately 1% will survive. Spica was unfortunately not one of the 1%.

It's tougher in the Kpop industry because idols literally start young to train in singing, dancing, rapping, multiple languages, etc. So much to do that they can not focus so much on school. Because of that many idols don't have a good college degree to get a job after their group disbands. It's like their whole life got wasted because of the industry. It's unlike western industry where the parent can make a deal and have their child stay in school before focusing on their career. Also in the kpop industry their is accumulated debt from all the training, it isn't like that in western industry.

Unpopular Opinion: Honestly saying, SPICA was vocally way better than AOA, but SPICA decadence came because at the time, AOA good looks and sexy concepts got more attention, but their voices (spica) were stunning, I really wish they could be together now because, as you might know, she got to Debut on UNI.T but they didn't last long and disbanded, and where most of them already had groups, most of the members got to be placed on their original groups, leaving Jiwon without an established group, and I feel so bad for her, because she's stunning and her voice is amazing, her and SPICA deserved so much more and so much better...
Why you blame AOA? Mamamoo is the one that took spotlight from Spica and if not even Mamamoo, this is just their luck and destiny. Spica was my fave group too but this is their luck, if they didn't have enough loyal fans or decent fandom to support them, then that's their luck. Blaming another idol for getting popular and trashing them won't change anything. Idols in general no matter how famous they become they can lose their fame with time. I mean look at 2ne1, Bigbang and soon same will happen with BTS and the other popular groups. It is a cycle, out with the old and in with the new. Plus AOA got attention for sexy concept but so did Girls Day and Sistar. Sexy concept was trendy back in 2014 and these three groups benefited the most from it because well that is their luck. Just be grateful for everything and don't hate others because hatred is useless. Now try to at least make Jiwon successful as soloist.

It's not the first time things like this happen in the k-pop industry, where groups with vocal quality lose because companies pulled up these generic concepts on groups for the sake of their profit. Groups like Mamamoo were not based on the luck of an era, their company made them stay true to themselves and they succeeded, and I (Me, because the opinion is mine) think the same could happen with SPICA. AOA's company tried too hard to hide them on a concept that didn't match them, they lost their harmony as a group (I didn't even bring the scandal) and look at the result.
Groups like 2EN1 didn't stand a chance because they were willing to stay loyal to their truth and talent - encouraging people to be themselves and not trying to make them fit on a standard to feel ok - on a company that just wanted looks and money, they didn't disband or lost fame because they wanted or just because "it happens" - they were kicked to the curb.
Sexy concept may even have been a trend back then, but you have to understand that a concept like that can be built IF the person is confortable with it, and you can see that most idols that been submitted to even wear sexy outfits (Momoland, Red Velvet, etc.) were clearly uncomfortable, picture trying to pull that up for YEARS because it was "luck" (Have you seen bingle bangle or Good Luck? Those were girl crush concepts that they pulled off really well without needing that much of exposure), that's where they were standing, that's what made them fall, and I believe SPICA could really make it different, with or without AOA, but at the time, that's what happened, and they lost their chance to even prove it. I would love to suppert Jiwon, but she's back at where she was, so it can be a little hard for her.

AOA already debuted with Sexy anyway, if you watch Elvis and the dance you'll understand. The company always had sexy direction for AOA and it just happened to blow up with Miniskirt because the song was a bop. Every idol works hard and it took AOA over 2 years to get noticed. The company tried and pushed them hard with busking and mini concerts. I believe Spica would've done well had their company been patient and push them harder but I guess it was their luck and the past is past now. Can't change anything except wish them luck with what they do. Also, AOA might not be a vocal heavy group but they are talented, they work just as hard as other idols. I don't see often people downgrade BTS for being way too popular when they literally lack vocal ability compared to other groups even rookies. But that's another story. My point is neither AOA nor any idol should be brought down to justify why another idol was not more popular. You could've been sad about Spica situation needless of bringing AOA into this because you make it seem like AOA don't deserve their success. That's shady and unfair on both sides. I am sure Spica wouldn't want us comparing and saying another group is less talented than them yet got more popular. It serves no one.
I hope Spica gets to reunite someday and make new music together! They were a very strong vocal group! I miss them!

You know if somehow Spica decides to re-debut, they won't fail this time. They'll make it big. I know that they passed the chance to be idols but they could debut as just singers. Their vocals are magnificent.
It was really sad to see the other girls at first trying to get her into their team because she was really good...and had a really good impression from both the judges and the audience. But they forgot that not everyone is perfect so when she made mistakes or had difficulties with dancing or keeping up with them, they used to ignore her...

I still get teary eyed when I watch this after so many years, she was one of the top female artists I've always loved, I come back to this video so many times and aghhh it's amazing.

Even till now this never get old...always love Yang Jiwon and supportive of her. I cry just by watching this..😭 the emotional spill from my heart how I felt towards her. Something just unexplainable and heart felt. So I decided to follow her on Instagram and be very supportive of her till now...happy to see she doing well and what other opportunities that's given her even UNI-T disbanded.

@@mochisjamswereinjoonspassp4281 yes, so one of them is taemins friend, they both trained together and all, taemin got to debut and his friend couldn't, they went through struggles so seeing him there was kinda painful.

Jiwon here is the weakest vocal in Spica but she slays the Unit, BoHyung is on a diff level in term of vocal, BoA has that unique husky jazzy voice and even the rapper is talented at singing. Too bad the kpop industry at their time only focused on sexiness and not talents. AOA won the music program coz they switched to sexy concept. Dont feel bad Jiwon, Spica is love 💕

When Taemin crying, I am trying to hold up my tears but this reminds me when Kahi was crying the moment Nuest entering the stage during PD101. It hurts me to watch my favourite boys to return back to first step because of this cruel world. Himnae saeyo everyone. You will get what you are deserved to. It matter of time.

She always had the cutest lisp! I can't believe she had to work a part time job after her group disbanded. Her agency probably paid her almost nothing in her time in Spica.
Its been 5 years and im back here, i remember a lot of talalented idols in this show. I hope that this show will back again to give another one chance to other idols to shine again. I love you jiwon

this was my favorite song from Spica and what actually got me interested in them as well. I'm really rooting for her. I hope she's able to succeed! she really deserves it :) right when she started singing i got goosebumps
I AM SO GLAD that she made the final line-up. I was so worried. She has great voice and everything but she often overshadows by other people in the competition, that she often doesnt show her full capacity for most of the time.

This make my cry because Spica was a very talented and original group and mamamoo reminds me a lot of them that I was scared that one day they will forget like Spica but fortunately they are successful. It's sad how many groups that were so good and were famous but now are just a memory 😔
