Excellent video and explanation. Also perfect timing. I was watching a DVD earlier today (Wado Ryu Karate Vol 1 - The Way of Peace & Harmony) where Sensei Yoshiaki Ajari demonstrates this exact piece as Bunkai. However he uses the mikazuki geri to release a trapped hand. I was then trying to explain to my partner that this makes no sense to me: 1) why would you use so much energy to simple free both you and your attacker 2) Why would you not just use a striking kick if you are in range to do so to the legs or abdomen which would be far more effective in that scenario (if you are going to take your foot off the ground) 3) Why would you effectively give the attacker the chance to escalate his own attack against you. I was also explaining that in my opinion there is very little in the original kata that is frivolous or simply for show. It is general the most direct way to achieve success (in this case, staying alive). Knowing your work well, I popped on to your site to demonstrate this principal and here is the exact same segment, with what I believe is a far more realistic interpretation. Keep up the excellent work and I hope to get to one of your courses when I am back in the UK.
Great! Thank you. Can you please tell me the purpose of the double phoenix eye punch? Is it a strike (double punch) or are you breaking a hold on your arms? Thanks
I always though it was catching a foot, I never thought of this bunkai. Another reason why I look forward to these videos.
'Making sense of kata'. I like it.
A very interesting take on the final sequence of Hangetsu. Thank you Sensei!
This is the definitive Waza in all of Karate Sensei! Thank you for your enlightening demonstrations!

I thought that cresent kicking the hand meant that you are sweeping the leg and immediately grabbing the swept leg!.
thank you.!!!
always thought the last pose was a strangle hold from back while droping body weight
very effective
So the so-called oblique kick is just an applied Mikazuki Geri. I like that. I think it's the most versatile kick around.
👍
