Thank you sir Been in a Cascadia for 4 years and knew the engine break like the back of my hand. Coming up to the grapevine I5 and didn’t want to take any chances. Got me in a rental right now.
Many engines have a delay in the activation of the retarder. If yours does, then it won't interfere with the shifting.BUT if you get (I think) a Caterpillar motor, the engine brake is instantaneous, so if it's on while up shifting, the rpms will nosedive faster than you expect, but if you're quick with the shifter, all will be mostly cool. It messes with DOWNSHIFTING by kicking in and nosediving the rpms just after you revved the engine. (all of a sudden, I'm not seeing your comment: I don't know if I deleted it or hid it or something by mistake. I'm unwinding for bed and my codriver hit a bump. If it's gone, feel free to repost it).
Is it possible to fit a steel guitar in the sleeper area of a truck? Im concerned about not being able to practice when I go over the road. I hope to be a truck driver some day.
It depends on the truck. A standard D10 will stand up in the closet of a Kenworth, and will fit under the bunk of a big Volvo The packaseat and amp can also stow someplace.
SteelguitarLane what do you do if your on a 36 hour layover and want to play the thing? Do you have to settle for playing lap steel or something? Are the sleepers that small that you couldn't set up a keyless guitar somehow? I don't know much about the intieror of these sleeper trucks but some of these guys are out for over 6 months a time... the trucks look huge on the interstate, I was thinking the inside had more room...
I have done the following: 1) carried steel and amp into a rest area building and practiced 2) set up in the picnic table area of a terminal 3) set up with a battery powered amp next to the truck. In this big Volvo with a built-in inverter I could set up the guitar in front of the bunk with the amp on the upper shelf if I really wanted to practice in the truck, but it would be a little cramped. In good weather, I'd plug the amp into the sleeper (like I may have mentioned, this truck has a 900W inverter) and set it on the seat with the guitar on the ground next to the truck.
Butt Man Jake Brake is a brand of engine brake, and sometimes people call all engine braking exhaust braking. (Longwinded expansion starts here, skip it if details bore you) "Exhaust braking" is the simplest form of retarder, only used on small 6 wheel trucks: it's just a guillotine valve across the exhaust pipe just after the turbo. Jake Brake and most other retarders sit on top of the heads and play with valve timing, eliminating the power stroke, and using all that compression against the drive train. These things are now crazy powerful. The one in this video develops 515 retarding horsepower but the engine only does 470 going forward. They're sometimes called exhaust brakes, but that's not a very accurate nickname. There's a third variation of retarder that is basically a torque convertor that tries to couple the flywheel to the block when you flick the switch. This is really hard on the oil, because it heats the bejeebers out of the oil.
No, you don't. If the cruise isn't active, and you leave the retarder in 3 (or 1 or 2, but why?), it will come on when you let off the foot feed. If you leave it in A, it will come on every time you depress the brake pedal. If you have it in A, and the cruise active, it will come on to keep you below the top-limit speed (which you can set from 2-10 mph above the cruise speed).
@@SteelguitarLane But why ? Well because on a lower grade of hill you can use 1 ( or 2 depending ) to keep yourself bang on the speed limit without using the brakes or having to run 1-2 miles an hour over in order for it to kick in automatically. Also you can use it manually without it knocking off the cruise control provided you don't let the speed drop below what the cruis control is set at 👍 greetings from the UK and my Volvo FH16 750
The video isn't titled, "how to use a truck engine break". Simply put the video is just here to explain how it's utilized by an automatic system that has radar capabilities. Hope this reply helps clear up your confusion.
Switch position: First E+(eco mode), 2nd E(all time gearbox working), 3rd A1 when using brakes it works together with retarder, 4th retarder slows truck 5th retarder slows truck and changes gear. In winter time dont use 3rd, 4th and 5th switch positions.
Unfortunately, I am a LOUSY guitar player. I suppose I could try to make a video of "how to not embarrass yourself if you get stuck onstage with a guitar in your hands." I can play simple lines
There's a lever on the dash for the trailer brakes, but the retarder/engine brake is a stalk now (but I bet you can have dash switches on a 379 or W900)
Yes, you absolutely CAN. You should use retarder first, because it doesn't wear out or fade, but you can definitely supplement retarder with the brake pedal. We do it all the time.
Honestly I get it maybe cheaper maintenance wise for companys but if you ain't shifting you ain't trucking the industry went the same route as automakers most kids today cant drive a standard so to help em be truckers volvo made automatics and it just trickled down guess the sayin is true anyone can be a trucker today but if you train amd test out for your cdl in a auto you can never drive a manual so why even go through that headache learn the damn shift patterns and how to properly rev match the road speed to get down a gear commonsense but what do you expect for the waterd down safe space world we live in today
@@SteelguitarLane been trucking since 2010 an I'm not for the automatics I drove one told the guy wasnt gonna work for me n they didnt wanna get me a manual so went to a company that did I like to feel my gears in that pocket and not rely on technology but that's just me and your are correct everyone does have there own cup of tea but I'm from wi and 80 percent of the bigger companies have gone autos ive never signed to a company bigger then 6 trucks works out nice for everyone that way
I’m more confused now then before lol

Thanks so much...I learned from you.. greatly... next week is my Exam... thanks God bless you richly AMEN 🌸

Is it possible to fit a steel guitar in the sleeper area of a truck? Im concerned about not being able to practice when I go over the road. I hope to be a truck driver some day.
Maybe the bed folds up? Maybe a single neck keyless guitar would work? I'm really curious...

SteelguitarLane that is awesome, I love the videos by the way.
I don't know about trucks but can you tell me. Is the engine brake or jake brake different than the exhaust brake switch ?

There's also electromagnetic / induction / eddy current braking. Not sure why it's not more common. Pricey? ... Love my jake brake. So cool.
Check engine light is on
Just got a Volvo- you don’t have to be in cruise to engage the engine brake though do you?

He said to much , but he didn’t say how to turn on the engine break

i think i hit the jackpot for guitarist with a decent income...I ALSO PLAY GUITAR! Which is why i am pursuing this job. Got any guitar vids??

Spit it out bro. You can get the words out
😂😂😂
I about to drive a 2016 volvo and idk how to turn on the engine breaks, any help?
It's that stalk just above the wipers. Unless you have switches on the dash.
What is the year of your truck
That one was a 2019, I believe
Oops, that was a 2017. I kinda miss it.
FYI, Engine brake and Retarder is two completely different things.
Check this video: Scania Retarder
I thought their was a special lever to hit that aux brake. I'm pretty disappointed

The Check Engine light is on in Volvo I drive too
Engine light is on😮
Interesting, a Volvo truck with a check engine light...
my 2018 has the same issue too.
Oil filter needs to be changed ;)
Lol
Volvo has the best engine and tranny.
Please help me u cant use brake pedal while you're using retarder?

I don't get it...???
Release the gas padle and you see the motor break wil kick in
check engine bro
Вольво без чека не Вольво😂
What?
Your CIL is on need to scan
No need to scan. When parked, the dashboard can pull up the faults.
There was a bad reading in the nitrogen sensor in the SCR.
