Its all a house of cards. We are being lied to and happily agreeing with our television

$20/hr is on the lower end. Per the 2019 contract, average pay of dock workers including overtime is $45/hr and on average dock workers made $147K/ yr last year plus $30K in health insurance benefits. Hard to sympathize with folks who make more than average Americans and hold Americans hostage specially after such a catastrophic hurricane when supplies need to flow to the disaster areas. And the ILA leader made $855K last year. I hope this accelerates automation.

California dockworkers tend to make over 100k/yr, but it's expensive to live in CA, also, they're still making extremely good money. I have no idea about their particular state.
When it comes to California, think they'll be the least affected state on this. Texas too.

Inflation is an increase in the number of monetary units or credit/debt in existence. Prices going up due to reduced supply is just "supply & demand"- a different phenomenon.

this will have a knock on effect for shipping worldwide, since ships are held up in or outside american ports, they will not be on time for port slots elsewhere which will delay stuff at other ports also.
Ironically the dock workers Union are giving their employers even more reason FOR automation with their demands

I think it's time to replace them with robots if we want to avoid these issues in the future. Going on strike is a funny way of telling your employer you want to work, and demanding increases in salary will just add cost that will be offset onto said products coming in, Automation won't ask for raises, will work 24/7, doesn't need vacations or benefits, and best of all won't revolt but rather just do it's job.

30 dollars a hour raise they are def going to speed up automation.Get the Robots they dont call in strikes,sick,or double salary.
The reason this isn't effecting the longshoreman working at the ports on the West Coast of the US is because they work under a different union organization/chapter. In 2023, they reached a deal where the hourly pay was increased to around $60/hour. I suspect this group is trying to achieve a similar result....and I hope they get what they are asking for. These shipping/logistics companies rake in billions annually and the last time this union had a strike for wages was over 40 years ago. These people are key to making our economic engine work - support them.

Docks are important yes, but the workers don’t do anything too difficult. They are operating forklifts and cranes and documenting things. None of that even requires a college degree or anything.
Yet they risk their life’s. That’s a hard job bro you trippin.
The info I saw said they can make 100k a year working 100 hours a week so that's 40k at a 40hr week. That's poverty for a family in those major cities working full time. Some guys claim they haven't gotten a raise in 10 years. If this is true they definitely deserve a raise.
They deserve a salary increase. But not in the 80 in hr they demand. 30 - 35 per hour as starting sounds more reasonable than 20 for that work.
