- So, you are ready to buy a vanagon? Here are a few things I would look out for when searching for a new and improved king of overland travel Volkswagen Vanagon!

It takes a very special kind of crazy to drive one of these vans. So what if you need to wrench on it as much as you drive it and while driving it you're constantly on high alert for every aberrant sound or smell or vibration or variation in power (such as it is). Such is the price we happily pay for the joy and connection we feel when we drive them. These vans drip soul and character almost as much as they drip oil or coolant or transaxle oil. To paraphrase a few lines from another cult fandom, "You know what the first rule of owning a Vanagon is? Love. You take a Van out on the road you don't love and she will shake herself apart as sure as turn in the worlds. Love keeps her driving when she ought to break down. Tells you she's hurting before she keens. ...Makes her a home."
Couldn’t have said it any better myself! Older vehicles in general just take a little more love.
This is beautiful
Yes It Is ....regards from México ❤
Preach!
I love your humor. Great video!
You nailed it Sebastian! I’m goin to sit down today with my wife, make her watch your video , plead my case, pray to the Gods and tell her how much sense it is for me to buy the 82 westy 1.9 TDI I found on Craig’s list…. So we can be part of the VIBE!!
Well said. My 1980 aircooled has been my daily driver for the last 14 years... and it has been a constant struggle to keep it alive. I never imagined there could be anything that could bring so much joy and stress at the same time. It's the best.
Brahhhh!! You’re vibing in that rig, we all love old cars, we all love trouble!
Such a cool video, congrats from Sweetzerland 😎
😂😂😂 I love my '83 Westy! 2 years now, and I'm almost a certified VW mechanic 😅😅😅
It makes us stronger😂😂
yes ... i had a few, when they were affordable. Fun indeed! I had a 81, 82 and a 90 automatic. I saw the US, Canada and Mexico ... u have to like to tinker a bit and on longer roadtrips, be able to perform tune-ups on the road. otherwise, fun, fun, fun !! thanks for sharing ... all the best! when i watch videos like these, i miss mine.
They are only as reliable as you want them to be that’s for sure. If you don’t like to do regular or preventative maintenance then something is bound to fail.
It's a vibe all right... any great classic is going to be filled with issues. Once sorted out these are unbelievable in any weather.
Someday I might upgrade but, I haven't wore out my '78 yet...
Hilarious, true, and a stunning backdrop.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the video - SO true! I bought my '90 Westy Syncro eight years ago and it has been worth its weight in gold. Traveled far and wide with my family and made lasting memories. And the Subaru ej25 has yet to let me down. The gearbox? Yep, repaired and upgraded with more robust components.
A few upgrades and regular maintenance and these vans will give you what you want. That’s what I’ve learned
As a vintage Land Rover owner....I can relate very much to this content
Loved you van! I currently own 2 units. Both 1990 jx td engine westfalias. Been using this vans the last 17 years.
That’s a lot of years! Vanagons are awesome
Yep fell down that rabbit hole and spent big bucks but damn can’t give it up 👍
One of us. One of us . One of us
I'm probably not the first to say this but, bro, you're a vibe.
It’s all a vibe! Haha
the mustache makes this golden!!!
One thing about the engine is they have a gowesty engine that you can swap in, with out using a converter kit
Haha, I've always had vws(water cooled) i was driving a gti until i got my sprinter, but I'm always envious when i see a Vanogan or Westy😊
I remember doing the clutch on my 1970 VW Van and got the engine out and back in ,in a couple of hours. So now I have a 2008 Toyota Sienna xle and it has a lifter problem . To get that one lifter fixed is close to 8000.00 as you have to pull the engine , remove the front , remove a lot of stuff to get the cams out of the way to get to one of 24 lifters at 220.00 each. So i see the Westies are pretty pricy and the simple non westies are more reasonable in price . Love the humor in this video and maybe when the toyota finally dies I will have saved enough money to get something lighter and less idiot lights.
Yeah those new vehicles have a lot of computers! Toyotas should be reliable you would think! My van isn’t super reliable but it’s dependable!
Thank you Sebastian for making this video. I have been looking for one going on 9 years now. It's either way too expensive, a well kept late 1980's Vanagon but with a selling price as a high-end used car or sports-car. Or low price but beat up and not a running condition. Every time I found a decent one, it's gone, sold. My hold out as well is reliability, will it get me and my family stranded out there.
It’s definitely a gamble! Issues won’t start to pop up until you get some miles in too.
Well because of you I bought an 82 Westy diesel. Thank you
You’re welcome and I’m sorry hahaha
@@Sebastianstonum it's my 3rd Vanagon. The first two were Syncro's with a 2.1 and yes they left us on the side of the road a few times. Looking forward to a 1.9 MTDI diesel.
I've had my 1982 westy diesel since 1994. Rebuilt the motor myself, had a pro do the transaxle at 183000. Woefully underpowered but I don't care. Love this vehicle.
Author didn’t mention the early 80s factory diesel as a motor choice… . I LIKE cruising 55-60 mph with my rust-free 82 Westphalia diesel -getting 25 mpg. Used arp VW gas racing studs on cylinder head (not OEM stretch bolts) during new engine install. No head leaks these Past 6 yrs .Use phosphate free antifreeze on the waterboxers . I’ve rebuilt a couple of those (1.9 2.1) and see the corrosion around the o rings where the “wet sleeve” cylinder liner mates with the head and pitting on the cylinder head facing surface. I’ve found them all to be reliable engines if you DONT abuse ( drive real hard /overrev or neglect coolant maintenance ) Simply slow down and enjoy the adventure !
@@cscarmy I too have an 82 Diesel I'm building a 1Z MTDI with a later regeared transmission. I'm looking forward to the gas mileage and traveling slowly 😀
I love mine.
Thanks I need the vibe doing a suby conversion,
The rust part LOL
My van has rust haha
Based on my experience, you have to mod these things into something a little better and then they are not bad. You have to stay up on them. In fairness, they are all ancient now and it's all to be expected. How many other old vehicles are still on the road and actively used?
Don't forget to add "vanagon crash test footage" to your blocked list .
We are crash test dummies💪
Hey Sebastian, I'm going to email this video to myself a year in the past 🤣🤣🤣
@@WowenandWilma cc past me in it too😂
Great video!!!!
Thanks!!
could you make a video about how you learned to film + edit videos?:)
If I’m being completely honest. I feel like I have no clue what I’m doing😂
ALH swap with a flipped Passat VR6 5 speed. Big job, lots to dial in....but once your done....
It would be absolutely bulletproof!
They also came with a 1.6 diesel
Had one, 50 horsepower, could not do 70mph.
Apart from that it was fantastic
This video is a vibe!!
Such a vibe😎
😂 As a fellow Vanagon, sorry proper name T3, owner from down under I can agree with what you’ve said. Seriously if you don’t want to be made into a mechanic skip these vans and get a nice modern and reliable Sprinter.
Ohh I’m sorry, you T3 Latte drinkin brim hat wearin feral😂 these vans don’t attract car enthusiasts. They attract vibe enthusiasts
Did he say you should buy a sprinter? Because I have a sprinter but also want one of these. 😂
You seem way happier since you quit working for your last employer. I've never seen you smile so much. 👍👍 Oh yeah... Sprinter my a$$! 😂
No more stress, I love it!
im sold
That’s it! I’m buying a Delica
Buy one for me too!
I want to start a mobile mechanic business and there is one of these in the scrapyard I can make into a work van, yeah I could get a boring modern van but that's no fun
Its not the camper version
It would be fun for sure! You definitely need to do it!
@@Sebastianstonum I'm going to look at it tomorrow and if the frame is solid I will bring her home
Picking her up today ❤🔥
@@Sebastianstonum I contacted the previous owner from old service records in the van and they said the van has over 700,000 miles on it! The frame is in great condition, just rust on the body panels, it's an 81 aircooled.
rippin it on the off road is it 4wd?
What about the 1.9L Diesel engine? 😂
It’s how you use it!!
Dude, you are hysterical!
It’s a vibe!!!!
Are they AWD? 4x4
There are awd/4x4 options but mine is 2wd
Yep and make sure you give it a stupid name, and refer to your lump of metal and plastic as him or her just to complete the vibe, mine has had a few choice 4 letter names over the years 😂😂
Hahaha mine is the same. None of which I can say on RUclips
Having owned twelve 12 of these. Do not buy them. Unless you love problems and spending ridiculous $$
A lot of rust?
I’ve owned 8 vanagons the last 35 years . The factory diesel ones gave me less mechanical problems than the water boxers and are cheaper to maintain -it’s a rabbit diesel engine afterall (never owned an air-cooled - they can overheat more easily and seize up -as I found out in my 68 beetle during my college days )
hahahh that's a funny one!
You forgot to mention the horrible gas mileage you get 16-18 mpg highway
I’m getting around 26-28 mpg highway! #TdiLife
In my tintop(non pop up version- factory diesel .i got 30 mpg cruising in Canada at their “slower “ posted speeds.
🥰😍🤪🤣
I'd only keep the 'Yota pickup 🛻
if.......
you ever buy a Pickup Camper - such as a Northern Lite, of Canada....... 👍 Yeah😊❤.
Hi
That‘s the way!!!
🚐💨
Hello 👋🏼 stumbled across your channel. Really like your style. Think your channel is going to do really well…
Thank you so much! It’s been fun sharing my stories
I had two,an 83 westy 4spd and a vanagon automatic. I drove both to mexico on surf trips.4 stes of head on the westy in 12 mo and i couldnt get rid of it fast enough!!! Borh rode great handled great and i loved them...but...! I would love to put a westy on a f150 4x4 chassis...ya ya ya go ahead hate me but the camper is awesome.i would have one again with a vw idi 4cyl or nissan maxima engine conversion ,5spd ,4x4 if the weak links could be made better.
I wish vanagons and syncros had a more robust drivetrain.. the engines and transmissions are not the best for any type of travel apart from the casual weekend trip or one 2 week trip a year
