I think Ludacris was the only label vet being promoted when Jay took over. Or at least he happened to have more success than others. Remember this was the time when everybody was going platinum, especially in Def Jam: Jay-Z, DMX, Ja Rule, Method Man, Fabolous, N.O.R.E. Joe Budden is the definition of a "one hit wonder". He had 1 record that indeed was EVERYWHERE, but failed to follow it up with another hit record and his album eventually flopped. So Def Jam moved on to the next, and eventually dropped him. Sad, but it's business. Also Def Jam didn't force him to fit any role. That is bs he's always said to avoid taking accountability. Joe has tried making party/radio friendly music even after Def Jam, but failed to do so, look at Touch & Go in Halfway House or The Future in Padded Room. that's what happens when you do the work. Ross tbh is a music journalist at this point, dude could totally write for big magazines but this 100% pays more lol
Joe Budden isn’t a bad rapper. He has plenty of lyrical songs. Pump it up was a song pushed by his label, that’s actually not his usual content at all.
And the only reason Budden’s “Pump it Up” was everywhere at that time is this little thing called “Payola”! I worked in the hottest night clubs in Atlanta at that time and no one was getting hype to that song in the clubs.
"Talk To 'Em" was a Jay Z track that Joe put out when Jay Z came out of his fake retirement aka "i can't compete with 50/G Unit/Aftermath so I'll fall back" Terrible beat but brutal disses about Jay
Joe Budden did his thing on that. Jay Zs retirement was funny. Dude was back in what seemed like a couple of months but could've been longer. Do you remeber the song he made when he came back then Lil Wayne Remixed it and KILLED IT?
This song is whack af...even Joe said only the last few lines were directed at Jay (he’s on video saying so. He also goes on to admit that he was just expressing himself and that he didn’t have the accolades or accomplishments to be able to “come at Jay”. He then continues saying Jay is the best to do it.)🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
In the movie ‘Backstage’ JayZ made comment something like “there’s a cat sitting at a table eating cereal waiting for that shot and he could potentially take my spot.” At the time the name around town was Joe Budden. LOOK IT UP.
I remember Joe Budden actually signing to Rocafella Records, dropping Roc Cafe with Bleek and Sigel..... And then the label disbanding about 2 days later. Is my timeline all fucked up, or did that actually that happen?
This is why vultures shouldn’t have opinions on anything hip hop related, Joe got shelved at def jam because his first album flopped, it sold 95k first week & to date has only sold 420k so it’s not even gold. From 2003 to 2004/05 the album probably sold about 200 to 300k so at that time the label didn’t make any money off it or at least recoup what they spent making and promoting it. The pump it up beat alone probably cost an arm and a leg because Just blaze was one of the hottest most sought after producers at the time. This was also the super producer era where big producers like Just blaze, the neptunes, Timbaland were charging seven figures just to get a beat from them, then also collecting 50% of the royalties which is a standard for producers in hip hop. This meant that labels weren’t making any money from singles even if they were major hits. Long story short Joe was in limbo at def jam because he flopped, it had nothing to do with Jay it would’ve happened regardless of who was the president. The back and forth pump it up was just some hip hop shit, people forget Jay came into the game battling
Seriously if you’ve never heard Sean Price, he died a few years ago. Incredibly under rated 1/2 of Heltah Skeltah, Go listen to Nocturnal: it’s on Spotify. Clans, posies, crews, and cliqs is my favorite. Who’s Dat is a great smoking song
I haven’t watched this yet, but it got me thinking about how Joe is always showing Jay respect on his pod. I didn’t know he sabotaged Joe’s career, too.
Can someone explain to me how Jay Z was allowed to remix this if Joe Budden didn't allow him too. Legally speaking, Joe Budden could have pulled it down?
Unless Joe owned his master s he'd not have had ultimate say over the beat even after he had recorded on it. The producer Just Blaze (who happened to be one of Jay-z's primary producers only second to a young Kanye West) produced that record which was a clear conflict of interest. Thus being said is why Jay was able to snag the record, and lay his vocals on it. Just Blaze was not in any position to tell his boss no you can't tamper with this beat as you've already turned it down (🤔Can you imagine how that might've worked out for 🤦😩😔Just🤷🤔. But thank God for restoration because I like Joe Budden and his intentions where pure. He simply may have mistaken a thought to be checkers game for what was really a chess game. (Much love and respect to Joe because hip hop needs unapologetic, unfiltered, raw honesty and Joe does it well on his podcast with his bros)
@@JSaunOfficial No the label wouldn't have to clear it (it's the new oldest trick in the book) Jay didn't use it for wide distributing purposes, meaning that since Jay-z's version was only put on a mixtape(for free) then it's only mixtape bound and it's for the MOST part safe from lawsuits because technically the song is not being widely distributed for purchase, instead it's only being displayed merely for earplay, which is 🤷legal👌😔😚😉😎🎙️🎚️🎛️🎤🎧
@@lturner7159 Interesting. But the song is also on paid platforms (Spotify, RUclips). And I'm assuming at the time it got radio play... making it paid distribution, not just promotion.
@@JSaunOfficial Joe Budden's first version "Pump it Up" was the official song which was widely distributed for radio and commercial base usage, however the follow up and planned remix never materialized as Jay-z didn't officially get on a remix of the song with Joe Budden's blessings in fact Jay got on it and indirectly dissed Joe Budden without officially buying the beat (which is why In the opening of the song Jay says "Give me that beat fool, this a full-time jack move don't worry (Schino) i'll give it back soon)
Ross, you could make a podcast where you talk about video games, and rap. Maybe even other types of music, with guests such as: ordinary things, the girl who does your "this video was sponsored by", etc. I feel like this idea has a lot of potential.
Jay Z got mad because of that Def Jam video game because Joe Budden was the last person you had to beat and not Jay Z and the pump it up song was the featured track on the game.
Joe is a top 10 MC. He puts real thought into every line in his verses. He’s THAT type of rapper. Pump It Up does not give newcomers a good idea of how great of a rapper he is or type of beats he rapped over. If you know, you know. 🧐✊🏾
Yea Jay Z was never really down with dudes who pen game was on point other than Beans but that's cuz he practically owned him. When was the last time you seen Jay promote dudes that could potentially out rap him back then? Not never
That’s what you get when you have a culture vulture (literally looks like a vulture) doing video commentary on culture he’s not from, and no matter how much research he does, still doesn’t understand. Says “go at drake and live to tell the tale.”!? Don’t have to talk about how absurd that comment is. Kendrick and Pusha. That’s all that has to be said. Thank you so much for this! I definitely wanted to see it!
I have to wonder what would have happened if Joe Budden just said “sorry man I can’t afford that price for your verse, thanks anyway” .😂
Awesome video!😂

”Give me coin and you could potentially have a say on a video, possibly” - TLR always in the trap hustling to make that gwap

"No one was getting hype to the songs in the clubs"

"Talk To 'Em" was a Jay Z track that Joe put out when Jay Z came out of his fake retirement aka "i can't compete with 50/G Unit/Aftermath so I'll fall back"
Terrible beat but brutal disses about Jay
Joe Budden did his thing on that. Jay Zs retirement was funny. Dude was back in what seemed like a couple of months but could've been longer. Do you remeber the song he made when he came back then Lil Wayne Remixed it and KILLED IT?
@@xxweshmoke420dotcomofficia7 show me what you got.
@@2Muchpjp track was huge when it dropped
Another absolutely brilliant video my guy
You call him a vulture because you can’t do what he does. Y’all stay jealous of our success.

Go listen to Nocturnal: it’s on Spotify. Clans, posies, crews, and cliqs is my favorite.
Who’s Dat is a great smoking song
I haven’t watched this yet, but it got me thinking about how Joe is always showing Jay respect on his pod. I didn’t know he sabotaged Joe’s career, too.
Short tempered Charlemagne 🤣
@@lturner7159 If Joe didn't own the master, the record label would (or at least 50% of it). So you wouldn't the label have to clear it as well?
Joe got a cult following as a fan from way back I'm happy seeing Joe finally getting recognition he deserves.
TRUE
Ross, you could make a podcast where you talk about video games, and rap. Maybe even other types of music, with guests such as: ordinary things, the girl who does your "this video was sponsored by", etc. I feel like this idea has a lot of potential.
Cigarettea didn't change Joe's voice. He had surgery on his throat
I wanna see the Wiley and Dizzee rascal vid so bad, I beg you upload that next
Jay Z got mad because of that Def Jam video game because Joe Budden was the last person you had to beat and not Jay Z and the pump it up song was the featured track on the game.
This video is funny. I gotta give you respect man. You're dropping bars as you breakdown the story. That's a lot to retain.
I just keep getting the urge to split his hair straight down the middle
Joe is a top 10 MC. He puts real thought into every line in his verses. He’s THAT type of rapper. Pump It Up does not give newcomers a good idea of how great of a rapper he is or type of beats he rapped over. If you know, you know. 🧐✊🏾
