Xinjiang Tarim Desert Highway - 4K Scenic Drive - Part.1

The Takla Makan Desert is located in the center of the Tarim Basin in southern Xinjiang. It is the largest desert in China and the second largest drifting desert in the world. The Tarim Desert Highway was built by the China National Petroleum Corporation Tarim Oilfield Company in 1995. It is 522 kilometers long and runs from Lunnan Oilfield in the north to Minfeng County in the south. It runs through the Taklimakan Desert and is the longest grade highway built in a drifting desert in the world.
The Tarim Desert Highway was rated as the world's longest highway built in a moving desert (certified by the Guinness World Records in 1999) and was selected as one of the most beautiful highways in China by National Geographic.
In the nearly 30 years since it was put into operation, the Tarim Desert Highway has played an irreplaceable and important role in facilitating oil and gas exploration and development in the hinterland of the Taklimakan Desert, promoting research on the ecological protection of drifting deserts, and driving economic and social prosperity along the route. The Tarim Desert Highway not only connects southern and northern Xinjiang, greatly shortening the traffic distance, but also prevents the spread of desertification and improves the surrounding ecological and cultural environment. It is called the "Happiness Road" by the locals.
