Kia Ora fellow cup watchers how exciting are these boats i was a fisherman for 35 yrs so i know speed over water and to see these machines travelling at such pace is exhilarating
It’s absurdly funny to talk about highlights in this regatta. There are more cyclists on board than sailors, and when the computer fails, this mutant of a sailboat just drops into the water and stops moving. The competition is mind-numbingly boring and takes place on something like a football field. It’s more of a comedy to even call it a regatta or match race. Excited commentators scream in increasingly louder tones to create a tension that no one can actually feel. I miss the old regattas with beautiful yachts, fantastic sailors, and wonderful imagery. Turn this spectacle into a video game and let real sailboats return to this wonderful competition. Any regatta with a 470 is more exciting. I haven’t lost hope that someone who can change this drama will read this comment. Sincerely, Martin.
This was the sea state that everybody designed for. The previous days with no swell were unusual. So thus last day of racing is perhaps the best form guide going forward. So surprising to see NZ with apparent pace issues vs the Americans and the Italians.
I’m surprised anyone who’d watched this clip would think that. It might be understandable to ascribe LR’s penalties to bullying if they had happened on Spithill’s watch, but Bruni made it clear they were his mistakes. I think it would be hard to find someone on any of the boats who was less of a bully than Francesco.
The Alinghi v LR race was the best race in this prelim series I think. Awesome race! I hate to say it, but the first 3 days of racing I found pretty dull, ironic considering the speeds these boats are doing.
What I'm finding frustrating is that due to the very open nature of coverage for this cycle of the cup, there are likely many people watching and commenting on the races that have little to no awareness of how sailing works. How dependent performance is on connecting wind shifts and being in phase with those shifts. You hear the sailors and commentary team using the jargon but they seem to assume the entire global audience are avid sailors! That's doing a disservice to the sport and encouraging misinformed opinions and arguments.
Great races yesterday, brilliant watching, even if I don’t really understand sailing. Just like in this report which is quite t3chnical with all the terms that you are using that us non experts don’t know what many of them mean. Wish you could make it easier and therefore more useful
Not only did the kiwis accelerate towards the Americans in the last leg(in dirty air). In the last leg of the Luna Rosa race, Nathan Outteridge says, 'let's just concentrate on the speed'? And at that point, the kiwis started pulling away. ETNZ wasn't in top gear.
I mean, I love us winning and I'm well aware this is a "nothing" event and losing sucks, but yeah, they halved the lead in no time against the US. And when they needed to they piled it on against Prada. Again, a nothing event.

Alinghi has a new and young team and they wont succeed this time. But I like their aggressive, fearless starting manoeuvres.

Any reason to discount Alinghi being passed by a couple of their opponents and sailing on the edge, as not an indication that they are down on boat speed? INEOS were able to stick with ETNZ downwind, Magic got *that* win against ETNZ, Orient Express being a sister ship and Luna Rossa being so close to making a pass stick on ETNZ, says the others are all pretty slippery. Able to get through all scheduled races is another milestone for event organisers, as was the racing on the day four being vital. That there was no explanation in the live coverage of how a tie between Magic & Luna Rossa would have been decided had Alinghi managed to maintain their lead to the finish line instead of being passed by the Italians. I'd figure the pressure is particularly now on those who feel most likely to be the boat likely to go home at the end of the round robin, so does that make those teams immediately more prone to seeking gains in boat performance?
