    Thank you for this video, Although I have been working with Arduino for some time, I have always restricted myself on the VIN pin, this info opens up a whole new world of options. Kind Regards from Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

    Great, thanks for this, just what I need to know, as I have a Nano that doesn't have the barrel jack, so will solder an old 5V 500 mA USB adapter to the vin pin.

    I have a 12 V 2.5A power supply from a computer. If the barrel fits and the center is positive it should work as a power source if the amps are okay. Everywhere I look the voltage is talked about but never the amps. Are the amps not important? Can the amps be too much or too little? What would be the range for the amps? Thank you for your help!

      Your circuit will draw the amps it needs so just make sure your power supply can meet the demand. It's okay if your power supply is rated at a higher amperage than what your circuit will draw. I have used 12V 2.5A center-positive power supplies (wall warts) without issue on many different circuits- it's a good source.

    so simply Vin supply you with almost the same voltage you apply through the barrel jack and and then you can limit the current according to to the circuit required right?

      Applying power to the VIN will result in that power being channeled through the regulator- same as the barrel jack. As such, the first part of your statement is correct. Your circuit will draw the current it needs-- just make sure your power supply can keep up with the amps needed by your circuit.

    if I wanted to use this on a vehicle would i power it through the vin or dc. I want to use a Arduino and accelerometer for the brake lights

      You can use either- VIN or DC barrel jack should work for input power.

    why do power arduino direct in the 5V pin ? I explain: The voltage in the GPIO pins, or digital pins, are the voltages from the regulator, also in the aref, and this regulator is not stable at all. In my project I use the digital ports to provide eletricity to test components, and use the analog read to read those ports. Simple using a external reference voltage in aref does no solve this problem, because arduino in the digital ports are working with the "5" or so voltages from the regulator. The solution to this is a external 5V highly stable power source direct in the 5V pin.
    Not sure if I was clear enough.

      You can in fact use the 5V pin to power, but you have to know what you are doing (which you obviously do). For most beginners, it’s best to avoid using this pin since it is not regulated. Since you are using a “highly regulated source”, then of course you won’t have any issues.

    @Modest Maker can 12 volts 5 ampere adapter can power the mg995 servo motor to arduino uno.

      According to my research cued here :ruclips.net/video/mTHwa_UCYMQ/видео.html -- At 12V, your current output through the 5V pin will be about 200 mA. If the servo can run off 200 mA for your application, you should be fine. Do you know the current draw for your application?

      Then that power supply probably won’t work due to thermal limiting dropping the current below 800 mA- at least that’s my understanding from the referenced resources I mentioned in the video. Be careful if you test this though- I am not sure what happens if you try to draw more than 1 amp through that pin if in fact all that amperage is available- that’s a lot of power for those small traces. If you roll the dice, please share your results.

    Which power supply do i use for my arduino with CNC shield. I used a 9v 1A power supply and the servo motor that I pin on CNC shield was broken ( the power supply for CNC shield was 12V 2.5A). I'm looking forward to your answer, thank you!

      Without knowing more about your shield, I am not really sure. If it is an Arduino shield, it shouldn’t take more amps than the 5V pin can supply, so 12 volt center positive 1 amp minimum should be okay.

      If the shield is powered by the arduino via the 5V pin, my original answer stands. If the shield is powered by its own power supply, then 12V 2.5 amps sounds about right.

    Please tell me what to do if we supply more than 5v to Arduino Uno 5v output pin because I have done it to my both the boards and they are not working.😢😥

      Microelectronics are sensitive to voltage overload - not sure how you can fix this one :(

      Yes, you can. Doing so would facilitate serial communications via your Arduino IDE. In this case, I suspect your Arduino will switch to the power supply for power, but still let you communicate via USB / serial terminal, assuming your power supply is of an appropriate voltage as summarized in the video.

    I had a doubt, If I use the DC power jack (or the ViN pin) do I get 5V and 3.3V output from the +5V and 3V3 pin?

      That is correct - you will get the regulated voltage. To confirm, add a couple of jumpers to those pins and test the voltage with a multimeter.

      Yes- as long as the plug is center positive and the amps are sufficient for your purposes. If you are just running the Arduino with a few LEDs, 1 amp should be more than enough.

      Yes, but it has to be a center positive barrel jack, and should provide enough amperage for any hardware / shields attached to your Arduino, or you will risk it resetting the sketch continuously. The voltage regulator on the Arduino will bring it down too 5V.

      As mentioned in minute 10:35, doing so bypasses the voltage regulator, so the boards may have been damaged ☹️. This is like putting too much water pressure through a pipe that isn’t rated to handle the same.
