    What a cool film; and honest too. You don't see many videos of guys riding up hills or in the sleeting rain. nice trip.

    Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing, Em! My wife and I visited Norway for the very first time in summer 2019 and fell in love with it! Everywhere you travel is like a perfect postcard photo! I hope to return one day to do some cycle touring and wild camping! BTW, where in France were you where you had such beautiful vistas? Cheers from Los Angeles, California, USA.

    Enjoyed your excellent video found researching the EuroVelo 1. I realize its a few years ago of course. How did you get to Nordkapp to start your journey? Flights and buses with bicycle in cardboard container. Wildcamping seems to be the only realistic way to spend nights on the road although this is a bit daunting to me who has always found overnight accommodation on my adventures by bike, never taking a tent!. One of your earlier replies comprehensively covers various concerns, like tunnels, ferries etc. Any particular reason you chose to start at the North Cape and then roughly follow the EV1? I'm trying to make my mind up although instinctively I would cycle in warmer countries. Kind regards. Tom

      Hi, I was living in Tromsø at the time so I took the Hurtigruten ferry up with my bike. Wild camping in Norway is well accepted and safe, plus having 24 sunlight to start also helps it seem less daunting! I really enjoyed the weather as it was never too hot but it did rain quite a bit in the southern parts. Enjoy your travels!

    great trip, i'm no movie maker but from a viewing perspective some of your off bike camera pans were too quick for my eyes, slow down just a bit. Otherwise great effort on and off the bike. Did you cycle through Belgium ? one of the very best cycling countries i think. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

      Thank you! I agree, some of the shots are too fast, others too slow and all are way too shaky! The video wasn't meant to be anything fancy as I only had an old digital camera but I put it together to show family and friends. As RUclips videos were super helpful to plan my trip I thought I'd share it here too for any other to-be-cycle-tourists. Sadly time didn't permit to cycle Belgium however, it is certainly on the list for the future. Thanks for the comment!

    Fantastic video thanks for uploading, I am taking my family on a road trip from UK to Helsinki and Helsinki to Nordkapp via Rovaniemi and Nordkapp back to the Uk via Bergen, Oslo, Gothenburg, Malmo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Calais and London. Could you please share your camping and experiences on the way from Nordkapp to the Netherlands via Oslo, because we are going up north via Sweden to Nordkapp and any other advice, since we are travelling with 3 children under 8 years old, thanks

    • @emilymcdonald5698
      @emilymcdonald5698  6 лет назад

      Hi, that sounds like an amazing adventure - with three kids no less! I took the ferry from Kristiansand to Hirtshals (Denmark) so I never did pass through Oslo. As for camping I predominately wild camped and would stay on a campground whenever I needed to shower, charge my external battery pack, etc or if I was staying outside a major city (I did this in Bergen and Trondheim) and would stay to visit for a day or 2. Finding a wild camping spot was easy, especially in the North, just make sure it's not in someones way and that you leave no trace. Safe travels to you and your family!

      Thank you for your prompt reply, we plan to do a mixture of cabins, campgrounds and Airbnb up north to make it more adventurous for the kids and more hotels and Airbnb as we get down south.

    Just a couple of simple questions - what tyres you were using? And how easy was to find a ferry when there is no other choice? Planning to do something simmilar in 2019

    • @emilymcdonald5698
      @emilymcdonald5698  6 лет назад

      Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you! I no longer have that bike but I believe the tires were 26". Since my route followed the coast I had to take quite a few ferries. Most ran at least 3 times a day so I never had to wait more than a few hours. Usually at the terminal they had the schedules posted for the other ferries in the area so I could take a picture and plan ahead if I needed to. In my opinion the tunnels were more of a logistics issue than the ferries. Since some tunnels are closed to cyclists a great resource was www.cycletourer.co.uk/maps/tunnelmap.shtml. All the best in your travels!

    Hello Emily, where did you start your trip in Norway? At Nordkapp? Is it possible to start overthere with a plane?

    • @emilymcdonald5698
      @emilymcdonald5698  6 лет назад +3

      Hi. I was living in Tromsø at the time so I took the Hurtigruten, a coastal cruise boat, from there to Honningsvåg. From Honningsvåg it was about a 35km cycle to the NordKapp. Some people chose to take a bus and begin from the Nordkapp but I cycled it there and back. I had read it was a challenging ride so I left my panniers on the side of the road (well hidden, just in case) took only essentials and picked them up on my way back. The boat was a beautiful way to start the trip and from Tromsø to Honningvåg is a short enough trip you don't have to purchase a cabin. All the best!

    Hi, Emily, maybe it's a little long in my post, I'm sorry! First of all, congratulations on the trip and the movie. I am 59 years old and I am from Brazil. I am planning to ride in Europe in the summer of 2019 alone, leaving Grenoble, France, where my son lives, to Oud Turnholt, Belgium, where my niece lives. From there, finally, pedal to NordKapp, in Norway. I need some help from you to plan my route. Did you follow Eurovelo routes or create your own itinerary? Did you camp the whole trip (in structured camp or camped by the road, is it allowed and safe? Did you use the warmshower?). What about the weather? I live in a hot region, so what kind of clothing, including sleeping bag (comfort temperature) should I take? Is it better to use bikepacking bags or the traditional pannier? Is there an internet signal along the way? Is there a need for sea crossings by boats and the need to travel by train? Is it worth returning to Oud-Turnhout by bike or otherwise? And finally, can you share your route? Thanks for the information that will consume your time. Fernando Morado / Brazil. I started pedaling for 5 months and I made two trips in Brazil, 650 km and 700 km on roads and dirt tracks, with lots of climb and loose rocks. I'll keep training until then. I'm posting a quick report on @moradopenna

      Oi Fernando! Obrigada pela sua mensagem. Sou Canadense mas morei no Brasil por um ano, vc tem um país lindo! I am happy to answer your questions but will respond in English in case anyone had the same questions.
      Route: I didn't have a set route other than I wanted to stick to the coast, head south, stay off busy highways and avoided tunnels that are closed for cyclist. Norway has many tunnels so this is a large consideration you wouldn't normally have to think of in Brazil. This link (www.cycletourer.co.uk/maps/tunnelmap.shtml) is a great resource, it has a map with all the tunnels stating if it open to cyclists and has reviews. Some of my route was EuroVelo 1(particularly in the North where there are fewer route options) but I didn't plan my trip off it.
      Camping: Wild camping is absolutely safe, legal and even encouraged in Norway. In Norwegian the law is called "allemannsrett" and there are a few simple rules to follow so make sure to look them up and be respectful (uncultivated land, only stay 1 night, leave no trace, etc...). I never tried warm showers but have heard good things. I almost always wild camped but in cities or when I really needed a shower I would stay at a paid campsite.
      Weather: Norwegian and Canadian climate are very similar. Due to the gulf stream the north of Norway is not as cold as most would think though and in the summer there is daylight 24 hours. My sleeping bag's comfort temperature is 0 degrees but it isn't necessary, that was just the one I own for camping in Canada.
      Bags: I opted for regular panniers. I don't have experience with the bikepacking bags so I can't really comment on them but panniers worked great! Just be sure to try to balance your gear's weight on either side.
      Internet: Most grocery stores in Norway have wifi (especially the bigger chains like the co-op) so usually I would get groceries and check my phone then. Otherwise paid campsites also usually had wifi.
      Water crossings: I took a lot of ferries between islands. Most ran multiple times a day so I never had to wait more than a couple of hours. I wasn't rushing my trip or trying to make a certain milage each day so I didn't bother to plan the timings but the schedules are available online so you could plan it out.
      I hope this helps you planning your trip! If you have any other questions let me know. Tudo de melhor para vc!
