Thanks everyone for the support with my last 2 videos. This one was long, tiring but very fun to make, hope you enjoy. I don't know when I'll make another, but it definitely won't be as long as this. Please correct me down here if I've made a mistake anywhere in the video or the subtitles, and please discuss the stuff I talk about in the video, I love hearing about it. :)

This is an amazing video! Really made me think about the game and games as a whole. Keep at it! I went and watched your previous videos too, which were equally great, even with the short run time! thanks for making this!

Hello. Thanks for this! Overlaying the footage from the game and others and making them more and more crazy was a very interesting visualization of compounding the though processes and what could be happening in the player's mind. The live action part was super weird and cool!
It's good that you brought Ted Chiang and 'Understand' into the video, It definitely deserves to be here. I finally read his stories after Jonathan himself recommended him, as an example of what contemporary sci-fi should look like. I could barely put the stories down.
For me 'Arrival' had one of the biggest impacts. I saw the movie first and only later read the story. When we walked out of the cinema with my friends, most of them were disappointed, as they were expecting more of an 'Independence Day' style action (and they could be forgiven, as it was marketed in that way a little bit). But I was blown away in a different way. I speak a few languages, but it really made me click how 'language' can make a person see and understand a whole new structure of life and the universe and... I won't spoil it here it here, if you know you know. This always makes me think of the Witness. What new language and insight can we learn from it?
Thanks again. I actually did not finish the video completely, but I will re watch and finish after checking out the Beginner's Guide!

Wow! I love this reading between The Witness and Arrival/Story of Your Life. I also watched the film first and it's one I always return to thinking about once in a while, the idea of it is so powerful. By learning to understand that alien language what changes about the human part of ourselves? What changes in us when we understand the lines? I thought about Story of Your Life first when writing the script but couldn't find much between it and The Witness in the end and instead found that Understand fit my interpretation better. But I never looked at it in this way, it's really interesting for both pieces of media.
I really like Ted Chiang's stories, my favourites from the Stories of Your Life and Others collection are Understand, Division by Zero, Story of Your Life and Seventy-Two Letters. His stories have amazing sci-fi concepts but then weave them into deep human experience. I'm currently reading through the Exhalation collection and really enjoying it.
Definitely check out The Beginner's Guide. It's best knowing as little as possible when going in. Thanks for watching and for this insight!

What a criminally underrated channel and video. This is a masterpiece of editing and sound design, not to mention the insane amount of thought and retrospection that went into this. I don't make serious videos on this platform but if I had the time and motivation I would want them to be like this. Thanks for inspiring me

Sorry for a late reply... but thank you for this comment. I made these videos cause I was inspired by channels that I watched that make essays on games and art, and because I wanted to see if anyone would like what I did. So its kinda crazy that I've already gotten people saying that I inspired them, it's nice cause wow they like what I made but also cause I hope that people get something out of these silly videos like I did from making them. If you want to make something and have the time and energy to do it then do it, that's one of the best things you can do.

I love this video a ton, it's very Electron Dancey, but you also bring your own unique style that I appreciated. All the other pieces you brought in were done in clever ways, and while I can't say I entirely resonate with your thesis, it's amazing to see an interpretation from somebody who clearly loves the game at least as much as I do. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks you! I wanted to offer an interpretation of the game heavily influenced by my journey through it. The script changed a lot over time as while writing it and by writing it I found more connections between things in the game and media I was pulling from and I changed the video to capture that. Any interpretation of The Witness is valid and important to the player’s journey through it, and as the video progresses I wanted to focus on what made this game unique for me. Glad that you enjoyed it!

@@barneybradshaw I'm probably going to, at some point, make a video essay myself to compress all my thoughts on this game. But I doubt I could make it as entertaining and engaging as yours. It's really well edited, and has a lot of love poured into it.

Your video quality is always so impressive! They feel like magic to watch
If I was to levy one small criticism it would be the music being slightly too load but that doesn’t really take much away from the video

Thanks! I wanted the music to be loud for some sections but yeah I probably should have spent more time trying to get the balance right throughout.

This is a nitpick, but the screens below the mountain are displaying unique footage rather than any of the 3 long screenshots leading up to the game. Perhaps I just misinterpreted what you said there, and indeed the shots are quite similar, but they're new.

    • @barneybradshaw
      @barneybradshaw  7 месяцев назад +1

Oh yeah you’re right! They are pretty similar so I think I just assumed they were the long screenshots while writing the script. I should have checked, sorry for the discontinuity.
