Baang-e-Dara: 116 | Shama Aur Shair | The Candle And The Poet | Allama Iqbal | Iqbaliyat

Written in 1912, Shama-aur-Shair is among the major poems of Iqbal. In 'Shikwa' and 'Jawab-e-Shikwa' Iqbal introduces the reader to the subject by gradually justifying his theme. In 'Shamaur-Shair' the dialogue is direct. It is a symbolic poem. The poet or 'shair' is the symbol for the tradition-ridden poet who has not adapted himself to his times. There again Iqbal indirectly emphasises the missionary zeal which should possess and guide a poet. That he should find no appreciation is the logical consequence of a shift from the traditional ryhming 'numbers' to another sort of poetry-one that should impart zeal and fervour_ to its hearer. For as orders change, so do the tastes.
'Shama aur Shair' is also very important from another viewpoint, namely, the theme, the imagery empolyed, and the emphasis on the Pan-Islamic concept. For instance, when the poet describes the effect of ceaseless effort for the attainment of success, he employs the image of the wave which, when once it gains momentum, could bring about a revolution in the velocity f the river. Iqbal applies this image to the present-day Islamic world. He sees a storm that is bound to burst from the lull and quietness of the river which pervades it at the moment.

Gaisuay Tu Azpar-e-Parwana Dar Dashana Ae
Last night I said to the candle of my desolate house
“Your hair gets combed by the wings of the moth
Dar Jahan Misl-e-Charagh-e-Lala-e-Sehrastam
Ne Naseeb-e-Mehfile, Ne Qismat-e-Kashana Ae
In the world I am like the lamp of the wilderness’ tulip
I am neither in an assembly’s lot, nor in a house’ fortune
Madd Te Manind-e-Tou Man Hum Nafas Mee Soukhtam
Dar Tawaf-e-Shaula Am Baale Na Zad Parwana Ae
Since a long time I am also burning my breath like you
Though I am circling the flame no moth has hit its wing
Mee Tapad Sad Jalwa-e-Dar Jaan-e-Amal Far Sood-e-Mann
Bar Namee Khaizd Azeen Mehfil Dil-e-Diwana Ae
Many an effulgence is crammed in my life of unfulfilled desires
Not a single loving heart rises in this assembly
Az Kuja Aen Aatish-e-Alam Faroz Andokhti
Kirmak-e-Be Maya Ra Souz-e-Kaleem Amoskhti
From where have you acquired this world illuminating fire?
