It's somewhat sad this version of hers is less well-known than Carol King's rendition of her "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", another great 60's pop song by a female singer-songwriter.
Ellie Greenwich was a fantastic songwriter. And she was an outstanding singer as well. Check out "You Don't Know," another great tune and fine recording. Her then-husband Jeff Barry worked on the production of both of these as far as I know. For me, this version of her own song shreds Spector's bombastic, over-the-top version to pieces. I still like his version, but I think this is a better arrangement. The arrangement here has great touches of subtlety and an a wonderful ebb and flow. I really love the guitar, backing vocals, and the strings. It's just her and the piano (which she may have played?) and everything just drops in as the song goes along. The little piano break in the middle is terrific - you come back to the beginning musically before the buildup to the end. Putting it in 3/4 time was brilliant. For what it's worth, it's in the key of C - the Spector cover is in E. I suspect she recorded this in New York, since that's where she was based and I believe she recorded her other records (and it's where Red Bird, the label most of her stuff was on, was also based). The drummer and bass player are amazing on this record; I'd love to know who they are. Just magical all the way around.
Ellie Greenwich wrote this song with her husband Jeff Barry. Phil Spector saw the potential of Be My Baby and worked with his arranger to give it the Wall of Sound Treatment. As was his habit, he took songwriting credit. More money. The cost of recording this was astronomical for the day. Spector hired the best musicians and used the unique echo chamber in the Gold Star studio to great effect. It's arguably the best rock and roll song ever recorded. Ellie and Jeff wrote many great songs.
As good as it gets. Not saying it's any better than the Ronettes' version, but Ellie was great as an individual performer. Never mind she's arguably the best female songwriter. Or at least up there with Laura Nyro, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell. There is a very strong nexus between Greenwich and Brian Wilson. Greenwich and Carole King were Brill Building and that music was always so positive, just the soundtrack of our lives at the time.

Ellie and her husband Jeff Barry wrote a TON of songs as part of the Brill Building crew. Also in that building were Carol King and her husband, Jerry Goffin, and an unknown writer, Neil Diamond, among others. Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, and Carol King & Jerry Goffin at one time had most of the top 10 hits under their belts at the SAME TIME for weeks on end. Holland/Dozier/Holland were in that group, too, but they weren't part of the Brill Building group. I'm surprised Be My Baby was originally a waltz!

As great as the song is, it is the Wall of Sound that makes it memorable. Say what you want about Phil but as he says, God created two musical geniuses--Beethoven and Phil Spector.

Exactly, Michael! It's called the ORIGINAL before it was morphed into the more popular pop hit which it became when it was later recorded by The Ronettes.
Can any one verify: Ellie Greenwich made a cha-cha recording in 1956, but to my knowledge, she is also Barbie Gaye (Barbie - due to her young age and looking very "cute") who made the original version of My Boy Lollipop (later made famous in 1963 by Millie "Small") - I only have few lines written in a Cd booklet and can nothing on line currently.
I can try! She was also known as Ellie Gaye (that's true), which she used as acknowledgement to Barbie Gaye who was the original singer of "My Boy Lollipop". The Barbie Gaye/Lollipop thing is right but as to the reason for Ellie using the "Gaye" name I'd have no way of knowing if that were true or not.

Well.....Let me disagree!.....I think it's terrible!.....The first time I heard The Ronettes version I was baffled!....And to me still nr.one song EVER!!!!....I'm a extreme Beatles fan,but B e my baby is on top of any of their songs!

a great "script" but it was director Spector who brought it to life and made it memorable and to his credit that he recognized of the Wrecking Crew.

バリーが離婚すると付き合い始めたが、音楽的にはまだ別のキャリアを歩んでいた。[2] 1962年、学生時代にブリルビルディングにJohn Gluck, Jr.（レスリー・ゴアのIt's My Partyの作家のひとり）に会いに行って道が開けた。 別の用件があったGluckは、グレニッチをある部屋に入れると行ってしまった。 その部屋はたまたまリーバー＝ストーラーの部屋だった。 部屋からピアノの音が聴こえてきてジェリー・リーバーは「ああ、キャロル・キングが来てんだあ」と思いのぞいてみたら、そこにいたのはグレニッチだった。彼女は自己紹介して。そこにいる理由を説明した。 彼女のソングライターとしての才能に気づいたリーバーは、彼女が最初に持ってきた歌をボツにした代わりに「いつでもスタジオを使ってもいいよ」と言った。後にリーバー＝ストーラーは音楽出版社Trio Musicのスタッフ・ライターとして彼女と契約した。
バリーの前にBen RaleighandやMark Barkanと組んでいた。また裏方としてデモ・テープで歌いまくり「デモ・クイーン」と呼ばれた。[5] この時期の最大ヒットはTony Powersとの共作で、"He's Got The Power" (The Exciters), "(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry" (Darlene Love), "Why Do Lovers Break Each Others' Hearts?" (Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeansなど。後ろの二つを共作・制作したのはフィル・スペクター。
1962年10月28日、バリーと結婚。二人で曲を書くことにし、Tony Powersをがっかりさせた。[2]バリーの相方Artie Resnickも。バリーもTrio Musicと契約、彼ら専用の事務所を与えられた。
1963年末、ロネッツの『Be My Baby』『Baby, I Love You』、クリスタルズの『Then He Kissed Me』『Da Doo Ron Ron』、Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans『Not Too Young To Get Married』、ダーレン・ラブの『Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)』などがヒットし、彼らは大成功を収めた。共作・制作はすべてスペクター。
夫妻はThe Raindropsの名前でシングル、アルバムを録音、グレニッチがオーバーダビングですべての女性ヴォーカルを、バリーがバス声を受け持った。『What A Guy』が最初のシングルで、『The Kind Of Boy You Can't Forget』がトップ20ヒットになった。
彼らの歌った『Hanky Panky』は1966年にTommy James and the Shondellsがヒットさせた。
1964年にマンフレッド・マン『Do Wah Diddy Diddy』が英米でトップに立つ。
1963年末、the Raindropsは『That Boy John』を録音、中ヒットになった。ジョンF.ケネディー大統領が暗殺されたばかりで、ラジオ局は再生をいやがったそうだ。

1964年にリーバー＝ストーラーがRed Bird Recordsを設立したとき、彼らはソングライター・プロデューサーとして引き抜かれた。最初のリリースはThe Dixie Cups『Chapel of Love』（スペクター共作・元はロネッツの曲））で、No. 1となる。
続いてRed Birdに曲を書き、The Ad-Libs "He Ain't No Angel" "Remember", The Jelly Beans "I Wanna Love Him So Bad"、 The Shangri-Las "Leader of the Pack"（George "Shadow" Morton共作）などがヒットした。[9][10][11]
1965年、グレニッチは『You Don't Know』,バリーは『Our Love Can Still Be Saved』を録音発表。[12]
しかし、結婚生活は救われず、年末に離婚。
1966年は仕事をいっしょに続けた。このころグレニッチはニール・ダイアモンドという新しい才能を発見し、バリーと三人でTallyrand Musicという音楽出版社を設立し、ダイアモンドの歌を出版した。
ダイアモンドは続いてBert BernsのBang Recordsと契約し、"Cherry Cherry" "Kentucky Woman"などがヒットした。マン・グレニッチ夫妻はプロデュースを担当し、バック・コーラスも歌った。
その後、元夫妻は1966年のロネッツ『I Can Hear Music』（1969年にビーチ・ボーイズがカバー）、Ike and Tina Turner『River Deep - Mountain High』で最後にもう一度スペクターと組んだ。Philles labelでの彼らの最後のシングルとなった。 『River Deep』はイギリスで3位となったが、アメリカでは商業的に失敗し、88位に留まった。
数年後、1970-71年にThe Supremesとフォー・トップスによる『River Deep』は14位のヒットになった。[13]
キャリア後半
1967年、マイク・ラシュコウとPineywood Music設立。[7] 数年間、Dusty Springfield, The Definitive Rock Chorale, The Other Voices, The Fuzzy Bunnies, The Hardy Boysに曲を書く。
1968年に初ソロ・アルバム『Ellie Greenwich Composes, Produces and Sings』をリリース、『Niki Hoeky』が日本で1位、『I Want You to Be My Baby』もヒットした。 Dusty Springfield, Bobby Darin, Lou Christie,フランク・シナトラ,ELO,ブロンディー、シンディ・ローパー、Gary U.S. Bondsなどのヴォーカルアレンジ、コーラスなども担当し、また、バリーの会社でも歌った。
Steve Tudanger,Steve Feldmanと出会い、Jingle Habitatを設立、ラジオやテレビのジングルを制作した。Tudanger とFeldmanはグレニッチのセカンド『Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung』（1973）も共同制作。
『Sunshine After The Rain』は歌手Elkie Brooksでイギリスでヒット。 プロデュースはリーバー＝ストーラーで、Elkie Brooksのアルバム『Two Days Away』からのカットだった。 ラシュコウとの共作が1971年に終わると, Ellen FoleyとJeff Kentと組み、Greenwich-Kent-Foleyのチームは 『Keep It Confidential』（ Nona Hendryx ）を書いて1983年リズムアンドブルース・チャートでヒット。
同年、『Right Track Wrong Train』をKentとシンディー・ローパーと書き、[Cyndi Lauper]],トップ2シングル『Girls Just Want to Have Fun』のＢ面に収録された。[要出典]
遺産
1984年,彼女の人生と音楽を扱ったミュージカル『Leader of the Pack』が公開、彼女自身も出演。トニー賞・グラミー賞を受賞。何度かリバイバルしている。
1991年、バリーとソングライターの殿堂入り。
2004年、ローリング・ストーン誌の「最も偉大なロックソング500」に6曲が入り、作曲専門としては最多だった。[14]
1964年だけで17曲がチャート入りした。
2010年、ロックンロールの殿堂の最高栄誉賞「アーメット・アーティガン賞」受賞。[15]
式典ではキャロルキングが、バリーマン・シンシアワイル・Otis Blackwell・モルトシューマン・Jesse Stoneなどといっしょにバリー＝グレニッチを殿堂入りさせた。[16][17]
死去
2009年8月26日,ニューヨークのSt. Luke's Roosevelt Hospitalで心臓発作で亡くなった。数日前に肺炎で入院していた。[8]
2010年2月3日、パティ・スミスがカリフォルニアのSanta Monica Pierで即興で『BE My Baby』を歌い、グレニッチに捧げた。
2009年9月20日、シカゴのUnited Centerで、ブルース・スプリングスティーンとEストリートバンドが『ダドゥーロンロン』を歌った。スプリングスティーンは曲紹介で、グレニッチを「すばらしいロックとソウル・ソングライター"incredible rock and soul songwriter"」と呼んだ。

1960年代後半には「ロック」という呼び方が一般化し、「ロックンロール」と呼ぶことは少なくなった[6]。
一方で、「ロックンロール」と「ロック」は別の物として使われることもある。1960年代後半、ロックンロールが進化してその枠を壊し、新たなサウンドが生まれ、それらのサウンドの総称として「ロック」という言葉が使われている[6]。

ロックンロールの音楽的特徴としては、リズム・アンド・ブルースのほぼ均等なエイト・ビートや、ブルース・ジャズのシャッフル/スイングしたビート、ブルースのコード進行や音階（スケール）を応用した楽曲構成を挙げることができる。それら黒人音楽を基に、カントリー・アンド・ウェスタンを体得した白人ミュージシャンを中心として、双方のスタイルを混じり合わせ一般化した音楽であるとされる。

It was on a 1973 LP called "Let it be written, Let it be sung" on the Verve label. (on MGM in Europe.)
There is an Australian import twofer that has this plus an earlier Ellie LP on CD. It's on the Raven label.

The album was released in 2012 in Japan by the Universal Music Japan, with the Catalog Number [Universal Item Number] UICY-75152 and JAN/ISBN code number 4988005699855. In Japan it was marketed under the title 'Be My Baby'.
It is a superior sound release in mini-LP format and on a better quality CD made from cleaner, more transparent polycarbonate. Special High Material CD / SHM-CD. The sound of this CD is better than the sound of the CD released on the Australian label 'Raven'. I haven't heard the Verve release but it is, for sure, not better than the Japanese release.
The limited release of this album is almost sold out, there are still few CDs available. Can any one verify: Ellie Greenwich made a cha-cha recording in 1956, but to my knowledge, she is also Barbie Gaye (Barbie - due to her young age and looking very "cute") who made the original version of My Boy Lollipop (later made famous in 1963 by Millie "Small") - I only have few lines written in a Cd booklet and can nothing on line currently.
I can try! She was also known as Ellie Gaye (that's true), which she used as acknowledgement to Barbie Gaye who was the original singer of "My Boy Lollipop". The Barbie Gaye/Lollipop thing is right but as to the reason for Ellie using the "Gaye" name I'd have no way of knowing if that were true or not.
"Cha Cha Charming" by Ellie Gaye. It was on an RCA compilation called "TV Record Hop" in 1958. It has appeared on several bootleg girl group comps and some now out of print Japanese comps. Not sure about the original 45.
