Hello Chris, congratulations! Maybe its because you have now turned professional and having fewer distractions of your previous job; travel; homely duties to concentrate on - I can see much improvement in your thought processes; images; processing and working practices that I am going to make a prediction. I think you are going to make it as a professional in your new career. So, I for one, wish you the very best of fortune ...
Wow! Thank you so much Allan, that is very kind of you to say so. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such an encouraging comment. I have had my fare share of criticism recently and that really gnaws away at my confidence but comments like this give me the strength to keep going.
Chris Sale When someone criticises your work, do what I do, have a quick peak at their work, very often the ones that do so , you will find their work is woeful. Anybody can criticise what we (all need) is encouragement! It can take a lifetime to learn this craft. And that is good thing, it stops us getting bored with it...
Stunning photos and great compositions. Goes to show you don't need perfect skies to make photos with real impact. Really liked the explanations around each location.
Thanks Barry - I have for a long time wanted to focus more and more on explaining my compositions so that people get more of a feeling for what I see and what I am trying to convey. Hopefully this new project will give me more opportunity to do just that.
Great project Chris and one that can keep you busy I'm sure. For me living in the South East I would have to do the complete opposite for a project, "The Hand of Man" is all to evident around here!! Thanks for sharing Mate, 👍📸
I guess you are right Rob. When I used to live in the south east a lot of my photography used to feature man made features within the natural landscape. Things like the Grand Union Canal, windmills, monuments, etc. I guess that is where a lot of my inspiration comes from...
I've commented on your blog already Chris and I hope every one of your subscribers signs up to it as it is an excellent companion to the vlogs. Nice work once again!

Love the Castlerigg shot Chris! It has it all for me particularly that sky. Great project Chris too as the Lake District is a managed landscape and requires a lot of maintenance.
Thanks Carl. I don't know how I feel about brilliant skies. I am not sure they do all that much for me. I think I take my best shots when the sky is clear. I know that is very much against what most people believe but there you are, we are all different I suppose. :)
Thanks Justyn, I am getting there mate. The pressure that I have created for myself by sharing my journey in this way and therefore opening myself up to criticism has reduced the amount of enjoyment that I have been getting from my photography. Hopefully I have put that behind me now.
The photo of the circle of stones.... May I express my enthusiasm in greek??? ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΑΡΑ!!!!!!!!!!! The sky, the light, the weather (yes, bad weather is the best weather!), the composition..... Amazing!!!! I also loved the photo of the trees in the beginning of the video, the lake photo (once again excellent), the last photo where you managed to minimise the negative effect of the fence and the photo of the dam which came out very well! Excellent work!!!
Hey Nek - thanks mate. It's good to hear from you. How is autumn shaping up in Greece. I have to say the Lake District is looking particularly lovely at the moment. Great time to me a photographer! :)
Hi Del - thanks mate, that is very kind of you to say. In truth I think going full time just gives me more opportunity to get the shot. No more Saturday weather for me to deal with. :)
I think it was WG Hoskins the landscape historian who claimed that you couldn't choose a strip of land a metre wide and kilometre long anywhere in England that didn't reveal some human intervention so you should be on to a winner. Good luck with the project.
Excellent! I think that is my motivation behind the project. We all think of the Lake District as a 'natural' landscape but it is nothing of the sort. If it weren't for the actions of man, for better or for worse, it would look entirely different. It feels wrong as a photographer specialising in the Lake District not to acknowledge that fact and to embrace it in some way.
"The Hand Of Man" Good topic! I usually hate fences and power lines in my shots. but this topic made them more acceptable in the context. Happy shooting!!
Thanks very much - though I am inclined to agree with you. It is a bit of a balance trying to show the positive impact that man has had and not being too biased. It is a subject a touch on a little in next week's video.
I like this idea of 'hand of man' and I've found that those sorts of things are what often catch my eye. Usually it's the remnants of unknown purpose I find inhabiting nature that I'm most drawn to. You've actually inspired me to start tagging some of my IG posts with #handofman to highlight what it was I was seeing and trying to convey. I've really enjoyed watching your videos and often hear you say things that are floating around in my head or articulate ideas that have been eluding me. Thank you for sharing your adventures and I'm looking forward to continuing to tag along.
I liked the Castlerigg image - wonderful stuff, and good use of that Ultra wide lens. Nice video - I have read this weeks blog, but I did so on my phone while on holiday, so enjoyed the read before getting home and watching this. Keep going, this is fun.
Cheers Dave - not too sure about the Castlerigg image myself. Not sure if the sky distracts interest away from the stones. Something to think about at least.
Cheers Mike - we have been having some wonderful conditions here in the north of England just lately. How are things shaping up down under. I guess you'll be in spring at the moment.
Chris, your honesty and the sincerity of your intent is such a draw; great work mate, keep it up. Looking forward to a full de-brief in a couple of week's time. All the very best to you.
Cheers Ian - looking forward to catching up. Have you picked up the camera recently or are you still preferring to chase those fish? Either way what a time of year to be outside. The Lakes is looking at her very best at the moment.
A bit of both Chris - as shall be revealed :-) !! Agreed, a joyous, life-affirming time to be outside as nature pulls on her most magnificent clothes. See you soon chum!
Great image of High Dam? Like you, I find my eye drawn along the dam and then along the waterline and trees but then into the negative space so it's what's not there rather than what's there that draws me in. Nice one👍
Thanks Adrian - I am so sorry mate but I have really fallen behind with RUclips but I just wanted to congratulate you reaching 1,000 subscribers. That is a huge milestone for any RUclipsr. Well done.
Great video Chris. I love all the ideas. I love your concept of "The Hand Of Man". And the weather was perfect. You have given me many ideas, as usual. Have an awesome day buddy.
Hi Steve - thanks mate, we've certainly had some great weather recently here in the north of England. So far autumn has been one of the best that I can remember. You have a good day too mate.
Interesting project Chris, all to often we hear about the negative impact we have on the land.Love the image from the stone circle, and the image with the dry stone wall. cheers

Another vlog with some awesome images, Chris. Especially liked the moody ones with the clouds and mist. One thought, Chris. I don’t know whether any of your other subscribers have mentioned it but have you ever considered showing your camera/lens settings when showing your still images? I know that I would find it beneficial. Thank you.
Hey Tony, I used to include details of my settings but I stopped doing it because it took so long to add them in. If it really helps I will start putting them back in.
20 minutes is impressive Chris as, although it is not high, it is very steep, so your fitness levels are going the opposite way to mine at the moment. I enjoyed your Hallin Fell summit photo and was going to say, how difficult it is to get any decent photo of Castlerigg Stone Circle, then you produced a shot that blew me always, what a shot! Good to see you got good conditions for your shoot after the previous days 121, that must have been frustrating. What a great concept "The Hand Of Man" is and a great photo to highlight the impact. Cheers Alan
Hi Alan - good to hear from you, I hope you are well. If our fitness levels are going in opposite directions how long before we are at the same level and I can keep up with you?

The Hand Of Man project did get the oooerr matron reaction initially. Great project and one we could all do in our local areas. Mine would be wind farms, peat cuttings and forestry commission
Garry! I knew that would be the reaction from some people. :) We are quite fortunate here in the Lakes that we don't have any wind farms inside the national park. I have nothing against them but I am glad that there are a few places left in the UK where we still have a clear horizon! :) I used to drive past quite a few on my way to and from work in Livingston. Scotland really has embraced them hasn't it.
Hallin Fell is one of the few times I can say, I’ve been up there myself. It was tough going. Introduced me to the concept of false summits too🙄. Loved that Stone circle image 👏
False summits on Hallin Fell? Are you sure? Maybe it's because I have been going up there for so many years it's just that I have forgotten. It is a brilliant little fell.
Well what you call a force summit is probably more accurate than mine. I just know I crested what I thought was the top and view, to see more angled grass 🙄
Interesting video...I picked up on you on your video where you said you're quitting the 'day job' and going for photographer full time. Been an interesting journey so far. I hope maybe some day I can do the same. I've been researching a lot into 4x5 large format cameras and photography and really interested also in 6x13 or 6x17 type panoramic photography (film)....I've stared experimenting with a nice wooden pinhole camera I got from an ONDU kickstarter campaign....first shots back on B&W film and I gotta say, I'm really getting hooked on the large pano shots. Wondering if you've looked into film for panos or large format with your landscape stuff? A Lot of what you have been showing looks like it would be a winner with these larger formats. I shoot digital of course too, but even with this, I've invested in pano rails and a rig from Really Right Stuff to do mult-row pano shots...and am really starring to explore this. Are you trying any pano type shots? Again looking at the cool areas you have to shoot, I'd think they'd be naturals for any type of good panoramic shooting. Keep up the good work!! CC
Hi there - I think large format photography is extremely interesting. There is still nothing to rival the quality of the images that it produces. However, at the moment I want to try to remain as 'accessible' as possible in order to inspire as many people as possible. One day I would like to try large format photography but for now I feel I must focus on digital. You are right though, the Lake District would look awesome as a large format pano.
Hi Chris I thought your photos this were very good. I thought the sky was a bit too moody for the standing stones and the composition was fine. I also like the last of the stone barn and wall and the light was good I thought.
I think I agree with you about the Castlerigg image. The sky distracts attention away from the stones which are supposed to be the subject of the image. Proof perhaps that a great sky does not necessarily make a good image?

Chris I love that little island, just a wonderful subject. Hey I've got a question for you that may seem a bit odd but for the fact that I use lime green in my home office, on my business cards and I'm working on obtaining a Jeep in the same color. I know it's bright but I've never been a fan of black, white, grey or silver vehicles. What I was wondering is this, in the beginning of the video you were wearing a lime green jacket/sweater. Who's the manufacture please.
Hi Hugh - it is very rare I get asked about what I am wearing. Most of the time I look like I got dressed in the dark, which of course I did! :) The fleece that I think your were referring to is a Jack Wolfskin. Hope that helps.
Cheers Joseph, it would certainly been a great shot, no doubt about it. I did bag it (albeit without the swan). Not sure it shows the 'hand of man' though.
Hello - thank you for that lovely compliment. Certainly I have improved in front of the camera since starting my channel. I used to script before but that just seemed to make me come across as being very wooden so now everything is off of the cuff. I like to do short pieces to camera which I have multiple attempts at until I get it right. You only see the best take, sometimes there can be as many as 10 attempts until I am happy with it. Other times I nail it first time! That always feels good when I do that! :)
@@ChrisSalePhoto Thanks Chris, this is really helpful. Ten takes? So you are human after all.😂 Kidding aside, im loving your channel and it is a huge inspiration to me to get off my butt and do some shooting for or myself. 🙂
Hi James - I use Lee Filters. They are a bit on the expensive side but certainly were the choice of most landscape photographers a few years ago. However, I am hearing good things about the Kase system at the moment.
Hey Chris. I recently met up with Sam and Hannah Bose in NZ = ) I had thought that I had heard you talk about the phrase "Light Snob" but I cant find it throughout your videos. Ooo, now then Jack, that is an excellent idea. I will look into that. Thanks for the suggestion.
Great watch mate 📷❤️
Cheers Paul, how's things mate?
Chris Sale fings good mate ta springs here and ts a moody one making for some nice vids n pix gotta love dodgy weather. Great project btw
@@ChrisSalePhoto A graduated filter taken up from the bottom reducing the exposure until balanced with the sky. Then add about 10 pc clarity and Bob's your Uncle Chris. Image saved ...
Chris Sale thank you Chris, unfortunately it appears they’ve gone with more mundane, drab, colors nowadays. Perhaps I’ll locate one similar someday.
8:27 / 14:08 was your shot Chris. Good vid.
Cheers Joseph, it would certainly been a great shot, no doubt about it. I did bag it (albeit without the swan). Not sure it shows the 'hand of man' though.
You are such a great speaker/presenter, so confident and concise. Can I ask how you prepare yourself to speak, or if you script beforehand etc?
Great topic, I myself have always wondered how to capture mans impact on nature. What filter system are you using?
Hi James - I use Lee Filters. They are a bit on the expensive side but certainly were the choice of most landscape photographers a few years ago. However, I am hearing good things about the Kase system at the moment.
Another good video Chris. Could not see your gear link - what tripod is that you are using?
Hi Ray - I use a Benro Mach3 TMA48CXL. I would not recommend it though to anyone sadly.
9:13 wow
Thanks very much. Probably my favourite shot of the week. It really is a beautiful location.
Hey Chris. I recently met up with Sam and Hannah Bose in NZ = ) I had thought that I had heard you talk about the phrase "Light Snob" but I cant find it throughout your videos. I thought it had been on your Collab with them... I was wanting to reference it and our channel in my next vlog, but I cant reference something I cant find, Does this ring any bells with you!? Ewan
Hi Ewan, sorry mate, I don't think that was me although I kinda wish it was! Hope you had a great time with Sam and Hannah, lovely couple aren't they.
You should try doing them in sets - one with no evidence of human impact & one with evidence of human impact.
Certainly something that I have considered Anthony. We will just have to see how things turn out.
