We are having a gray, cloudy day here in Southern Idaho. I love them. My parents live 25 miles North of my town and have snow flurries, we just have wind. I love the tutorial! Brightened my day as I am home with the dreaded virus…
Grey, black, white and all the colors...it doesn't really matter!!! All the potholders/hotpads are amazing! Wonderful, detailed tutorial!!!!! Saved, liked, now off to share
Yesterday we started with a wonderful gray cloudy day that got up to 60°F by noon. Then it rained and the temperature dropped a few degrees. Autumn has definitely arrived in Arizona. Today will be sunny all day with a high in the low 60s. Northern Arizona has already had snow. The forecast shows four more sunny days approaching 80°F before another single gray cloudy day with possible rain. I love the alternating sunny and gray days! ❤️
Your weather sounds much better than mine right now. We’ve had record highs yet again. The last few days were in the 90’s. Today is supposed to only hit 87. It’s also rained the last few nights. Lots of rain.
Thank you so much. I have a crumb playlist that shows how I sew my crumbs. I turned mine into a curtain for my sewing studio. You can use them in any project. Tote bags, pot holders, quilts, Christmas tree skirt, the list goes on. I like to make zipper pouches, coasters, hot pads, fabric postcards and other small projects.
Thank you. Most of the time they are easy. Many times we worry about messing It up or making something ugly. When we can let go of those things we can enjoy ourselves.
OMG I LOVE the potholder with all the turquoise and the other colors with the interesting patterns, especially those red berry-looking loops all looking beautiful together, both the front and the back. I like all your potholders but that colorful one is a work of art. Thanks for showing us your work.
These are great!! My sister recently moved to a different state to get a fresh start so I've been making her different things for her new place. I'm going to make some hot pads for her and love that I can make these in various sizes and use up my scraps. Whether I use gray scraps or holiday scraps these will make great gifts.
They will make wonderful housewarming gifts. One of those things that we sometimes forget to buy when we move until we need them. Plus, it’s nice to have had made items in the kitchen.
All nice hot-pad/pot-holders. I have a small collection of polka dot fabrics and love how yours turned out. I do have some grey/gray fabric in my stash but not seen it for a while. Hope you have a nice weekend and your internet will be back to normal soon 😁
Thanks Mary. My brain tells me to put the polka dot hot pad in my shop. My creative heart tells me MINE MINE MINE. 🤣. I’m trying to keep a few of what I make for myself. I’ll make another polka dot version for the shop.
One of my friends uses old towels that have gotten holes in them. She made me two. A double towel kept the heat out. I’ve never used it but thought it to be a good idea, especially if you run short on batting. I use gray thread a lot because it is so neutral. Love your potholders.
I love the cross hatch quilting at the moment, yours was gorgeous! I've planned to do a pair of bauble shaped pot holders to use over christmas for myself but if they turn out well i could make more for family. My children have a lot of grey decor in their homes so it's a must to use that colour no matter what i make for them haha...xxx
Thank you. I’ve been addicted to diagonal quilt lines and the cross hatching is even better. Ornament shaped potholders or hot pads would be fun for the holidays. My kids houses are very eclectic. Something they picked up over the years of living with me. 😉 I don’t normally follow trends but I do enjoy all of the greys that are so popular right now.
Hey Robin I am definitely making some hot pads to practice binding. I’ve never tried to bind anything as I always, you know, put right sides together, then turn it, etc lol. I saw some real pretty gray fabric at Walmart today, it was Waverly brand…it felt like good quality, but then again, I was just at Hobby Lobby buying some Kona lol. Have a great weekend, we’re (in Louisiana) are expecting heavy storms Saturday (Yay! lol)🥰
Be safe. If you’re getting what Texas and Oklahoma just went through you could be in for a tough day. 🤞🤞🤞 Small projects like these are great to practice Your binding techniques. It can take awhile to sew a quilt which means not much practice. It’s helpful to practice daily or at least 3 times a week.
I made some Hot pads for my brothers. they way too many potholders now... Might PLAY and turn a few hot pads into an insulated table runner since we put everything down the middle of the table. I'm going to PLAY with the funky block for potholders for us. Like the idea of 4 pieces of batting. :) Wasn't sure if you said PLAY or PRAY (LOL)... but I PRAY the table runner comes out Cool. I'm sure it will. Have a great rest of Friday and Happy Weekend. :)
The cutting mat was a gift from the company. All of the information and links are in this video. There was a discount code but o don’t know if it’s still active.
I use the same stitch length that I sew my quilt blocks together with. For me that’s a 2.0. When sewing my binding down the first time. Sometimes if I feel like I’m sewing through something that’s a bit thick I’ll bump It up to 2.6. When I flip my binding and top stitch by machine I usually go with a 2.4 or 2.6 stitch length. Those in the know say the thicker the product the longer the stitch length which of course makes sense. You could make a test piece and see what looks and feels right for you.
Depends on what you mean by quilting thread. You shouldn’t use hand quilting thread in your machine since It usually has a wax coating on the thread to make It easier to pull through the layers of a quilt. Some people like to sew with the thicker quilting threads. If your sewing machine likes the quilting thread you can always make a small project like a coaster and see how It works.
Mainly because it’s easier to hide the QAYG stitching. No burying threads. I’ve made several projects with the backing attached at the beginning It works either way.
The scrappy word of the day is a fun way to show who watches my videos from beginning to end. On the first Wednesday of the month I give away fabric postcards to those who use the scrappy word of the day. It’s also helpful for those who wish to leave a comment but aren’t sure what they want to say. Some subscribers like to guess what the scrappy word is before I say It. I usually choose a word that relates to something I’ve shown or talked about in that video.
You don't want to sew through all layers of hotpads or potholders because they will be hotspots. So don't use quilt as you go. Also be sure to use insulating padding.
But if I sew the top and batting together. Then sew the backing and batting together. Then use the binding to hold both sides together it won’t be through all layers. That should help avoid a hot spot. I’ve made several without the insulbright and they’ve work fine. There are other types of material that work in potholders.
Because it’s on the inside where nobody will see It. The auto cutter on my machine leaves small tails that don’t bother me when they are inside an item. Of course you can trim all thread tails if you prefer.
I understand but that’s the style of this channel. As if a group of friends were sitting around the table chatting and sewing. There’s numerous channels that just show the project and many do not speak at all. This channel is more chatty which allows me to give tips, tricks, and other ideas than the main project idea. I keep people company while they sew. Happy sewing!!

Nice to listen to your cheerful voice on this gray day we are having!
💗
Gray can be such a great neutral! This is a fun, quick, useful project.
Thanks Becky. I’ve been using grey more often now. I like It as a neutral.

Thanks Cindi. They were quick and fun to make.

Crumbs! I love that term, it's new to me. Would you do a video on what you use them for? You are a good teacher, thank you.

Thanks Susan. I plan on keeping the polka dot hot pad and putting the boho version in my shop. Those swirly loopy bits are fun and colorful.

Wonderful to see you back in the harness ❤❤❤
Thanks Lucy. 🦩
I liked you explication of the lining…denim, cotton or Insel bright. My hotpads might need updating. Thanks.
Thank you. Sometimes we have to make do with what we have on hand.

Thanks Lesley. My appt is Monday the 14th. 🤞🤞 it’s a one day fix.
I love the polka dot hot pad as well. Thank you for sharing this project.

Cute cute cute!! Another great tutorial. I really like the polka dot one too, and the gray fabric on the back is good choice. Nice Robin!
Thanks Sonnie.
👏👏👏 Great ideas!! Thanks for different material ideas.... Nice tutorial 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the reminder- I've got insulbrite to use! Forgot about it. It's a gray rainy day today!
I broke down and ordered more insulbrite. I guess I’ll have to get used to sewing with It. 🥴

Thanks. I use lots of grey/silver thread. Old towels are great for inside of potholders as long as they’re thick enough.
@@rsislandcrafts thank you. I liked the ones she made me just always used batting. May give it a try. Looking forward to future videos.
I use denim for the batting and the back of my hot pads and pot holders
Denim is very helpful for these type projects. I love how It helps to keep the heat out.

Thank you for your video
Thank you so much for hanging out with me today.
Thank you for your tutorial. I started some a while ago (need to find them now) and now I know how to finish them! 😊
It will feel so good to finish off a couple projects. Just in time to show them off at your home or give them away as gifts.
I love your potholders/hotpads.
this is a great idea for Christmas presents. I love the dots, especially the gray one.🙂
Thanks Meloni. Being able to use our scraps and make gifts is perfect for this time of year.
Great tutorial.. very informative
Thank you 🦩

Thanks for the tutorials you give. I've recently started watching and have subscribed. I'm hoping to start quilting soon.
Welcome!! I’m so glad you found our little community. I have a quilting playlist with several beginner level projects.

I said GRAY 😉. But I like your version too.
Ohhhh I made some Hot Pads with Red and GRAY Toweling fabric. :)
I've been waiting for this one!! Thx
I had fun making these. I always enjoy seeing QAYG scrappy projects.
Where did you purchase your cutting mat please? Love the mug rugs and the patterns. Thank you.
The cutting mat was a gift from the company. All of the information and links are in this video. There was a discount code but o don’t know if it’s still active.
What do you use as a stitch length, when you are sewing down your binding? I have 3 layers to stitch thru.. thanks!

Today we had gray skies until the severe storms and tornadoes started tonight.
I hope everyone is safe. Tornadoes are scary.
Can you use quilting thread
Depends on what you mean by quilting thread. Why would you not quilt the potholder with the backing attached to it??

Grey. What is the word for?

Pl tell me name of the white .one you showed first
The first white one I used was 100% cotton batting. I use various brands.
Thanks a lot for.your.immediate reply sis
Why aren't you removing the underside thread??
Because it’s on the inside where nobody will see It. The auto cutter on my machine leaves small tails that don’t bother me when they are inside an item. Of course you can trim all thread tails if you prefer.
Love the potholders, but sweetie you talk too much. Sorry. Just want to see the beautiful work you do.
