- How we fixed the oxidation on our 400ltz fenders and plastics. Was super easy, we used simple items, here is the list of what's needed:
1.) Lacquer thinner (1 gallon)
2.) Paint thinner (1 quart)
3.) Boiled linseed oil (1 quart)
4.) A few pairs of rubber gloves
5.) Eye protection
6.) A good handful of rags
7.) Willing helpers or plenty of elbow grease
A well ventilated area is a must, do not do this in a confined space as the fumes get quite intense.
First clean the plastics and make sure they're dry. Apply lacquer thinner to a rag and begin scrubbing. I'd start in an inconspicuous area to make sure this works on yours before putting it all over. After you get it looking the way you want mix the paint thinner with the boiled linseed oil. 60% paint thinner to 40% linseed oil (you won't need much more than a cup of this). Wipe it on and wait until it starts drying then wipe it clean with a dry rag.
Not saying this is the best fix but for $20 it sounded a whole lot better than $900 for new plastics!
Thanks for watching and best of luck!

Easy peazy. Thanks for this. Going to clean up my 1995 Polaris.
The black is fungus growing in the gaps of the deteriorated plastic.
I soaked mine in truck wash, left it overnight. Scrubbed with coarse plastic brush the pressure cleaned it. Treated with dashboard treatment.
Damn that cleaned up nice! Wish I had known this trick when I first bought my tri Moto, the plastics on it were horrible and it took hours of scrubbing. Guess I’ll try this on the old blasters and see how they clean up.
I've got one of these Quads .Road leagel. LTZ 400. 05. Great all round quads in my opinion. Had mine 10 years. Thanks for sharing your video 👍
How road legal?
tried this with a fine scotch bright pad for the dirt/grime and 1500 grit sandpaper afterwards instead of rags. worked much quicker and got a similar result. maybe 2000 grit to top it off and it worked great
Use brake cleaner on a buffer wheel on your drill. Then use the thinner/boiled linseed oil mix. The boiled linseed oil has dryers in it just like paint does. If you use raw linseed oil it will leave a slimy mess.
Flitz polish - works on plastic, metal, and clear plastics
Thinner pulls pigment out of the poly plastic! Purple power and a green scotch Brite pad will do the same thing, Then I use Armorall to put some moisture back!
A good stronge pressure washer will take that off get the same thing on my plastic patio chairs
im gonna try this on my bike and post it on my channel. looks way better than before
i like using a craft knife blade and scraping at a 90 degree angle. takes forever but the results are great.
I'm doing a restoration on a z400 now I scraped the plastics with a razor blade which I needed to take out some scratches out of the plastic anyways but it worked
Great job.! When's tbe shop open. So i could bring mine over.
That certainly came out nice. 🙂😳

Thanks for the tips.. Great video guys
I’m gonna be trying a 60/40 paint thinner and boiled linseed oil mixture. Also, how has this held up over the last year or so?
How’d it work I wanna do it
@@loganstruthers7756 worked really good, paint came out brand new again.
@@nkam_23no long term issues? Thinking about trying this with mine
After that paranormal activity 😂
Do you know what caused the black mold? Linseed oil is the cause of the mold. Weathered linseed oil causes mold.
That is ASMR
Steel wool the plastic first then you use Boiled linseed and paint thinner 50 50 mix will look brand new
50/50 mix woth what? Water? Linseed oil?
Yes water.. because you don't want it to separate from the oil 😂@kavpass
Super clean and a pressure washer your welcome
i use purple power degreaser and steel wool works just as good
So basically from the comments I learned that any freaking liquid on planet earth will clean your grungy ass quad......😂
Liquid metal works best
Did you see anything in the basement before you dropped your phone.
Sold many sets of z400 plastics. They are a total pain in the ass with fade and getting them clean.
Amazing
Great job!
I used a product called citrol which is made by Schaffer's oil company spray it on whip it off paint thinners will soften the plastic or
Mr clean magic eraser or comet on a damp rag works just as good.
That's what I use
Good i need this tricks for m'y can am renegade
Even the boiled linseed stays sticky. Your better off just using the thinners and then wd40.
copper polish is very good against scratches
I gotta try this on my ltz 250
I dont one fender on mine and used whole can of thinner only one finder done so far ran outta thinner
Nice job
May be get a old tooth brush you might get the dirt in the little scraches
Awesome thanks 👍
This method works for quick temporary results. Plastic will quickly fade again.
Wet and Dry would get rid of them scratches 👍🏻
Magic eraser is the best
Sos pads will take care of all of it.
How does the four wheeler look now?
To polish my four wheeler I use furniture polish and it’s looks BRAND new and I highly recommend using it. Great video though
Spray furniture polish is the BEST used it at motorcycle shop to!
Aris Torm which brand would you prefer. Id appreciate it
@@fordrestored4646 I use the Pledge brand, working at Yamaha/Kawi shop what is bought used. It makes mud/dirt fall off.
Aris Torm that’s right makes it look brand new. My dad bought a bike and sprayed it and wipe the dirt off and he sold it for a lot more than he bought it for.
Also if you need to get our dents, use boiling water and a plunger. Works everytime
Thank you
I'm surprised it didn't have 1 wheel hopping up and down real fast 😅 like a greatful dogs leg shaking with all those hands rubbing...great recruiting job tho.
I bet if you used a buffing wheel you could catch it on fire.
soft scrub with bleach worked back in the day.
Try a orbital buffer.at 1500 rpm. Cut your time by 2.
does it still look good now bro how long did it last ?
Spray wd40 on it allover and it will clean any plastic on your 4 wheeler or sxs
Wd on anything tht needs cleaning
Big price difference between sufficient WD40 and a can each of linseed oil and thinners!
Good stuff! Now I am SUBSCRIBING.
Good Idea... :)
Using a heat gun after sanding works well
Gives the plastic an uneven shine
I used a heat gun on my stuff 6 years ago
I used a magic eraser instead of rags and mine looks like new again
Hello from Mexico. Can i use it on oxidized headlights?
Use toothpaste and water just apply toothpaste to the headlights in a circular motion with a rag and let it sit for about 5min than use water and rag to remove in a circular motion like if your buffing the car
Thanks.
What about just washing you bike after you ride it to prevent this also u could store it inside that helps too.
I bought it this way, otherwise I agree with you completely :)
@@rockymills6940 been there before.
thinking you could have wiped down with bleach and then used some dish soap to wash (just looked real moldy)... then go right to last step... thanks
Should have just buffed the last stage using rubbing compound
I tried this method, super shiny.. BUT is very sticky.. cant even touch it, else my fingerprints ll be all over.
Any additional tips? People.. please
ya dont use blo. its not a piece of wood that will soak oil up, no wonder its all gummy.
Mechanically Disadvantaged what.?
brakleen works too i dont recomend it tho it could eat up your plastics too
Gas works to
Pressure washer way quicker
How long did the shine last?
Until d sun went down
I see alot of people using this method. Wondering how a buffer would do with this method
kelly dunn it works but you have to wet sand first with like a 800 then 1000 then use buffing compound and a polish it’s just a pain and makes swirls
Buffer can create a lot of heat so i wouldn't.
The best way is to use brake cleaner. You bont have to scrub as much and way faster cheaper
Brake cleaner.? Just straight to a cotton cloth and rubbing it.?
Didnt do anything for me
Does any1 know what quad this is
Suzuki ltz 400
pressure washer would take all that off
Pressure washer woulda saved u money and houuuurrrsss. Then wax it
Wet sand and buff
Magic eraser would have taken it off. And without chemicals.
Power washer
A buffer is faster
0000 steel wool
well if you use a pressure washer you will get all the black off all the scratches cleaned out. you will get a very bright yellow it takes alot less time bud. proven fact
Good lord that quad was wasted.
Just buy a new quad
If you would of taken care of the 4 wheeler too begin with, you wouldnt have to go through all this.
I bought it in this condition, the guy had just left it out for long periods of time apparently.
