Just bought $125 VTI and $200 VOO. Not much but I am very happy. It took me a long time to make this happen. Will be setting up small monthly automatic investments and make other purchases as I can.
Good for you 👍🏼 👏 congratulations 🙂🙂 it always feels like a slow start but the main thing is that you have now launched and you are now well on your way!
Hello I want to start invest ETFs in Etoro but I don't want buy CFD so what should I do? Etoro shown CFD trade in VTI VOO and SPY. Which platform did you invest your ETF?
i retired from the post office in 2009, my tsp (5 index funds you could place your retirement dollars in - mine was 40% in the small company fund, 40% in large company fund and the rest in bonds) was down over 40%. These funds are all very lowcost. Having learned the hard way I knew as long as I did nothing I would get that money back in spades. Over the next decade I ended up with huge gains over what i had before the 2008 swoon and that proves you don't lose until you sell, you just have to have the discipline to wait the market out.
Hey Jarrad, love the vids. Can you start putting all the stocks mentioned in the video in the description as well? Or at least divide the video into clear chapters? I've watched this video 3 or 4 times trying to remember the stocks, and every time I forget I have to watch through the whole video again. I guess it helps your view time though lol. Either way thanks!
I have individual stocks in addition to Vanguard funds. I am going with VTI, VXUS, VBR, VOT and VYM for the ETF part of the portfolio. Bond funds are a bit risky right now.

Greatly appreciated video's Jarrad Morrow! Really like your overviews and watched at lot of them already. Hi, you are very informative n I enjoy your channel. I am 57 n max out my roth for last 3 yrs. Im new at this with the taxable account. I have 10 shares of fxaix n schd in taxable account. account Q. thinking of adding voo n just continue with that instead of fxaix, (ill just have both)is that ok or just keep adding to fxaix. Also, do I put a 5,000 in n add 100 or 200 each month?
Will it make any difference if I sell from my vanguard Total US stock market account and buy the comparable ETF? I’m thinking of putting my portfolio on Digital Advisor which would mean transferring it all to ETF’s.
Thanks for great and informative video. What do you think about divident based ETFs like VIG? Does it make sense to hold it as substantial part of the portfolio along with VTI?
I'm personally not a fan of building a dividend-based portfolio (very very unpopular opinion here on RUclips) when you're many years away from retirement. What's the point of building a dividend based portfolio? To build a fairly predictable stream of income. Since I'm currently in the accumulation phase of investing and I already have a source of income (through my job), I don't need the dividend income at this time. Once I retire it might be a different story, but for now I'm focused more on growth so a fund like VTI or VOO is better suited for me. Tilting some of your portfolio towards a high dividend fund is fine if that's what you want to do. But just remember that you'll pay more in taxes if not held within a tax advantaged account and dividends aren't "free money". I'm not your guy for dividend investing, but if you do want to go that route then my good friend JJ has a RUclips channel based on that: Dividend Freedom
I appreciate the video, some good ideas on ETfs. However, I question the Real Estate pick. RE is already represented on a weighted basis in the total market ETF and with real estate at all time highs/rising rates looking I’m not sure it it adds value to a portfolio for either diversification or for a good bargain. You’d be better off holding a mix of small cap and international bonds on a risk return basis than the RE ETFs that are offered in the market. No need to overweight this.
I have a few hundred shares of Ford (f). Should I hang on to it or dump? Does have dividends so reluctant to sell, but worry about their electric car building
Great video! One thing that kind of confuses me are the risk potentials, since they tend to be either 4 or 5. Aren’t index funds like VTI for example extremely safe and diversified and practically guaranteed to give returns over time? Wouldn’t that make them not risky? Just clarifying since I soon plan to put a lot more into VTI and make up my portfolio around index funds.
Great question. The risk levels are where they're at for those funds because they're 100% stocks. If you look at something like the Vanguard Target Date 2025 retirement fund it's at a risk level of 3 because it has a higher % in bonds. If you look at the pure bond ETF (BND) it has a risk level of 2 because there are zero stocks in that fund. VTI is properly diversified among its stock holdings so I wouldn't worry too much about the risk level for that one.
Hello I’m 45 and I want to start investing , I want to open a Roth IRA account , which broker you recommend ? I was thinking fidelity, 🤔 which etfs I should choose ?
Another reason to avoid VT is the expense ratio. It's cheaper to get the same US & Foreign stock exposure by just buying into VTI & VXUS. VTI has a 0.03% expense ratio, while VXUS & VT both have a 0.08% expense ratio. Why pay a higher expense ratio for exposure to the US total stock market?
I started investing recently with a plan for long term with safer ETFs... but after reading others brag about shorter term gains, I tried stocks and crypto and I'm losing a lot. Will hope they go back in the green, sell and go all into ETFs... live and learn.
That’s an expensive lesson a lot of people are learning now a days. It’s easy to find the public individuals talking about their gains or pumping stocks, but you don’t hear a peep from the ones listening to these public figures who are losing money because they’re your average person that doesn’t have a large platform like RUclips or other social media. I know 5 normal people in my life who have lost money (10s of thousands of dollars) trying to trade stocks after watching different RUclips channels so you’re not alone. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah. Ive only put about 25% of my saved cash into the market, portfolio is down 10%, entered when the market was at the top. So my situation isn't too bad. I've heard much bigger horror stories. Just wish I'd gone with my original plan, using only ETFs whereas I'm like 50% etf right now and not listened to random people. Thanks for the video, my main etf is VTI too 😀
Well similar to VXUS you would only allocate a portion of your portfolio to VT. Let's say if you have 70% VTI and 30% VT. That basically is similar to 90% VTI and 10% VXUS.
Fair point. Can't think of any reason why one should do that though. Seems easier to just go with the second VTI/VXUS combo scenario. But technically, you are correct.
Thanks for sharing your content, if you don’t mind I have a question why vxus instead veu what would be the difference between both? Thank you so much.
I am all about growth in my HSA portfolio. I am interested in doing the 3-fund portfolio you mentioned for my HSA account with the Vanguard funds. (I am not planning on taking money out of this account for expenses; I want it to grow). I have lively, and want to use TD for the investing. I would like to have some real estate, do you think adding VNQ is wise, or really not needed for a growth strategy here? I have VTI @75, VNQ @10 VB@10 and VXUS@5
VMGAX is an institutional fund which is basically used by 401k type providers. They do have an ETF version which is MGK. If you're asking about that fund then I'd ask why would you want to hold that fund instead of another one? How does it align with your investing goals?
Risk is fairly subjective when it comes to investing, but if you want a general sense of the risk of a fund vs. it's category then you should be able to just do a quick google search. I know Morningstar does this for every fund, but I don't have first hand experience with too many other platforms
@@ocjakal7734 Oil ETF’s. UCO & USO. They would be doing a lot better right now if the president hadn’t shut down the Keystone pipeline. USO fell from $100 to $20 so I bought that one too.
I have a somewhat different portfolio. I am counting on value to have a good decade or two. I have VXF, VIG, VBR, VOE, and VTV in a high six-figure Roth IRA. I hope to pass it on to my kids when I pass on in 20 years or so.
As long as you're buying through an investment platform that allows fractional share purchasing then yes you can buy $100 worth of an ETF. I do that sort of thing all the time.
Adding VUG to VTI is over weighting growth stocks which have already a bigger market cap than value stocks. Small cap value stocks (like VBR) offer a much better diversification than VUG or even VB.
Hello I want to start invest ETFs in Etoro but I don't want buy CFD so what should I do? Etoro shown CFD trade in VTI VOO and SPY. Which platform did you invest your ETF?
Hi Jarrad, awesome content! quick question as I am a little new to this, but which type of account did you choose to set up with? (Stocks and shares ISA, General account, etc.)
Stocks and Shares ISAs are good because you can invest a certain amount per year without paying tax on the growth. A general account is also perfectly fine for long term investing despite paying taxes. If you're in places like the UK you can invest in what's called a SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension), this allows you to invest in stocks, index funds and ETFs and the government will actually top up whatever you put in by an extra 25%. The only downside is that you can't touch it until you reach the age of 55 (but perhaps in some ways this could be a good thing). The SIPP is purely a UK based thing but I'm sure other countries may have something similar, you'll have to do your own research on that depending on where you are in the world. Me personally I'm splitting my long term investment portfolio 50/50 between a Stocks and Shares ISA and a SIPP
Thanks for the video, so question would it be wise to transfer to VTI from my VTSAX stock, I am just learning and wondering if I should transfer to ETFs
@@tracimorgan3695 Either one is fine. They are just different share classes of the same investment. Since you hold VTSAX in IRA there is no tax if you decide to switch.
Because I'm so young and have many years of investing ahead of me I prefer a 2 fund portfolio. When I get closer to retirement I'll start adjusting to a 3 fund portfolio
Great information. But could you add the years from inception, "20000 since inception 17 years ago..." or "since 2009". You go over the 3, 5, and 10 yr performance but not knowing the years since inception makes the whole you would have x dollars since inception fairly useless. BUT the rest was great and I liked and subbed!
@@JarradMorrow I know you work hard on these and the quaiity of the thought and information. I don't subscribe easily. Looking forward to going through your video library and future ones. Just an observation for the future.
Holy smokes that’s a lot of funds. You’re overcomplicating it for yourself for no reason. I’d personally just own 1 total US stock market index fund/ETF which holds all of the stocks in those 8 funds
@@JarradMorrow I split it up using The ultimate B&H method so I can adjust the percentages to different sectors according to market fluctuations without having to manually go and trade my positions
Actually, VT makes the most sense since international stocks have outperformed the US market in several periods going back 50 years. From 2000-2009, the US underperformed international.
VT makes perfect sense. Is to the world what VTI is to the USA. It is diversified worldwide and holds some 9500 stocks all around the globe. There is your international exposure. With a 60/40-65/35 US to international it is about perfectly diversified.

Yes sir. Been friends with those guys for a few years.
@@JarradMorrow hell yeah. I own almost 20 shares of VTI
I have a somewhat different portfolio. I am counting on value to have a good decade or two. I have VXF, VIG, VBR, VOE, and VTV in a high six-figure Roth IRA. I hope to pass it on to my kids when I pass on in 20 years or so.
Dude, forget that. Spend the damn money.
@@MultiWalrus1 imagine saving all of your money for someone else to spend it 😅😂

I'm just in DCA into VTI, VEA, VWO, KOMP.
Thanks for the video, can you put 100 hundred dollars in ETF or does it have to have minimum amount ? The dog is cute by the way.
As long as you're buying through an investment platform that allows fractional share purchasing then yes you can buy $100 worth of an ETF. I do that sort of thing all the time.
That flashy of the photo of cathie wood so funny!
😂
This is very useful. Thank you for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
Nice diversified mix!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you, Jarrad!
Welcome!
Thanks for the video, so question would it be wise to transfer to VTI from my VTSAX stock, I am just learning and wondering if I should transfer to ETFs
Are you holding VTSAX in taxable brokerage account or IRA account?
@@alrocky its a IRA brokerage
@@tracimorgan3695 Either one is fine. They are just different share classes of the same investment. Since you hold VTSAX in IRA there is no tax if you decide to switch.
Thanks for the great explanation! I only wonder why VTI uses not FTSE index, but CRSP US Total Market. Isn't there the same FTSE index?
You want ftse, go with VT
@@travisfyne9316 VT is whole world, VTI - just US. I have not found US All Cap FTSE one..
What vehicle do you implement a 3 fund in? Individual, Roth, 401k?
Taxable brokerage account
@@JarradMorrow would you also set up your Roth as a 3 fund as well?
Because I'm so young and have many years of investing ahead of me I prefer a 2 fund portfolio. When I get closer to retirement I'll start adjusting to a 3 fund portfolio
Great information. But could you add the years from inception, "20000 since inception 17 years ago..." or "since 2009". You go over the 3, 5, and 10 yr performance but not knowing the years since inception makes the whole you would have x dollars since inception fairly useless. BUT the rest was great and I liked and subbed!
Uhhhh this video has already been released so I can't go back to add anything to it 😂
@@JarradMorrow I guess I was assuming you would do more of them in the future... You plan to never cover mutual funds again... ever?

Holy smokes that’s a lot of funds. You’re overcomplicating it for yourself for no reason. I’d personally just own 1 total US stock market index fund/ETF which holds all of the stocks in those 8 funds
@@JarradMorrow I split it up using The ultimate B&H method so I can adjust the percentages to different sectors according to market fluctuations without having to manually go and trade my positions

Actually, VT makes the most sense since international stocks have outperformed the US market in several periods going back 50 years. From 2000-2009, the US underperformed international.
Thanks for sharing your opinion!
VT makes perfect sense. Is to the world what VTI is to the USA. It is diversified worldwide and holds some 9500 stocks all around the globe. There is your international exposure. With a 60/40-65/35 US to international it is about perfectly diversified.
I think you will save my life😆please keep up the great work!!😊
