    The new one is a great car, but I shan't be swapping my now 'old' version for one because they've halved the size of the boot and swapped the metal folding roof for a tent! The big draw of my SL is the ability for it to be a 'proper' coupe (rather than a soft top) that I don't have to worry where I park it, and a surprisingly practical car for things like the airport run (getting cases in the boot). It's a shame, because I really don't know what I will change it for when the time comes.

      @Matthersch77 Год назад +2

      Completely agree! I also have the SL400 and won’t be swapping it as I think ours is more of the GT with big boot and comfort. I drove the new SL 55 recently, nice car but Actually it should be compared to the AMG gt convertible not the old SL… and the price makes it quite eye watering compared to the competition sadly.

    Back in March I traded in my GLC 300, and bought a SL 450. I'm absolutely in love! ❤ While the new version has newer technology, I really don't care for the addition of a back seat. In my opinion, it removes the romantic drama of a roadster and just makes it another cabriolet.
    I will tell you that on chilly nights the neck scarf feature is an amazing thing (especially in concert with the heated seats). With Mercedes making the new SL's only available in the AMG versions I'm not sure what I'll do when it comes time to trade in. The AMG price point is significantly higher. On a vehicle with a already heavy price tag. Thank you for making this video!

    They have destroyed the SL. In your own words the rear seat is mainly for bags & the boot is smaller. Not only that but the hardtop is gone in favour of a soft top that someone can put a knife in. I am on my third Mercedes SL as they are a fantastic car. I will not be buying a 4th. Why did they need a soft top.

    I’m going to agree with what a lot of people are saying here: the rear seats are pretty useless and detract from the new car being an attractive roadster plus the loss of a hardtop is I think a mistake. That said, I like the overall shape of the new SL, that is until the rear seats come into view. So, if given the choice, I would opt for the latter SL. Sorry Mercedes, I think you’ve got this one wrong.

But once you live with a proper Panorama Roof complete with adjustable tinting, there's no backsliding to the cloth top life. Mercedes spent 20 years showing us folding hardtops make for superior convertibles. A glaring omission past SL drivers notice. Another reason R230 AMG values are appreciating in America.

    (And depreciation since Covid has been non-existent).
    The Centre Console Screen on the new SL may have been "thought about" but not thought about enough imo.
    Why? Because it may tilt but it doesn't swivel! The further forward one sits the more "edge-on" the view will be. Being short-legged I wonder about the visibility and whether the dtiver's head turn to the left will be too much or too distractive from the head-on view?

    Hello Nick, I am new to your channel and just subscribed. My choice is the old SL. The new car is not an SL as what I have known it to be for so many years. Mercedes dropped the ball by saying the two are related. They could’ve just named the new ones AMG 63,-GT, 55-GT and 43-GT Cabriolet and left it at that! These new cars are more GT’s than SL’s and are in competition with Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. I purchased both, the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet and the Mercedes SL-450 so that I may have two totally different driving experiences. These new AMG’s should be compared to the Porsche, it appears to be the market Mercedes was going for with the design.

      @@npoleary You are welcome 🙏🏿 and thank you for the response. Yes, I love both my 2018 Porsche and the 2020 SL. I also have a Corvette Convertible. All three offers a different and exciting experience. The SL gives me the feeling of class and elegance. It is the car I drive to wear my black suit and take the wife out on the town in her red dress for dinner, theater and jazz in San Francisco. I’m not a race track guy so instead, I really enjoy driving the Porsche on the highway, particularly hwy 215 from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Those are the two cities I love to drive the Porsche around in no matter the occasion. The Vette is my fun car with the fellas. Strictly a masculine high performance American muscle car. It is the loudest of the three and the heaviest. I can drive it anywhere, from old towns to new ones. The wife is afraid to drive that one. As far as the SL is concerned, I waited to purchase that one later in age because I feel it is made for a mature man to still have fun once they’ve grown out of the rough and very low to the ground ride of your typical muscle car. Maybe had I been a young man in a profession that requires a suite and tie, I would’ve purchased the SL in my early 30’s like I did the my first love (the Vette)? However, I always knew I wanted the SL but chose to wait until my 50th birthday to purchase it. The SL is without question my favorite car of the three to cruise in comfort and still get that thrill of a younger me. Thank you again for engaging this conversation with me. I hope my experience of the car provides some value to your future evaluations and comparisons. I really enjoyed your video.
      Oh, I forgot to mention how I love the hard retractable top on the SL. The rag top on both the Porsche and the Vette has always leaked when you wash them. Funny thing is, they never leak when driving in the rain? lol 😂

    Hi Nick, new subscriber here. I’m with a lot of the comments from other SL owners here having owned three SL’s myself over the last 14 years, 2003 SL350, 2014 SL500 and just bought a 2017 SL500 with 12,500 on the clock. This new AMG ‘SL” isn’t an SL at all. The rear seats are a useless waste of space, the boot is very small and the fabulous vario roof is no more. Trendy but ergonomically flawed touchscreen. Added to which the price is eye watering.
    A cynical use of the SL badge by MB on a car which doesn’t deserve it.

      Hey Tony,
      Thanks for messaging! Well each new model that a manufacturer brings out they’ll always to try and make it better then the one before. The price difference though is because the SL is now only available as a Mercedes AMG variant with the powerful engine set ups.
      The rear seats from what I remember when I saw one last were basically the leftover space from the fixed roof. So more storage in my eyes but if any children came along on the rare occasion then it’s an added bonus for an extra seat or two.

      Thank you! I'm exactly the same! I love my 400. They've added 2 pointless seats which makes the boot/trunk tiny, they've removed the hard-top roof which has been the SL's trademark for so many years and turned it into a soft-top (which is easy to vandalise and doesn't look anywhere near as good) and the shape at the back is horrendous. Touch screens are so dangerous to use when driving yet all manufacturers seem insistent on putting them in every new car and the new SL operates almost everything with it. I like the more aggressive styling at the front but that's it. Plus my very slightly tweaked 400 puts out more power than this 55 AMG so I'm more than happy with it.

    The new cars are beautiful, I have the prior US model such as what you have shown. Here in the USA dealers are marking the new ones up by $80k which is laughable. As nice as the new ones are I would never pay $80k over sticker. Never. I also think it was a mistake getting rid of the hard top for the soft. With the hard top I am convertible when I want, or I can look like a normal coupe when I want. Most don't even know I have a convertible until I drop the top. No matter how they try to justify that move they have removed the new car from remaining a true roadster. Also the "all up/down" widow control you showed in the new SL is not new. Our all up/down button is in the section where the top control is and puts all four windows up, or down at the same time. Nothing new there. The new cars rear seats are nothing more than spaces for bags, which is fine, but they should have called it a bag area, etc. No adult and not many children can fit back there.It has been tried in other vides and it is not a practical back seat. The new boot is not "technically smaller" than the prior boot. It is "actually smaller" Very, very nice car the new one, but not worth $180k and they dropped the ball by getting rid of the hard top.

    1) Hard Top plus the panoramic Roof Which even if you wanted you cant get on the New Sl
    2) i Dont like having a Ipad as my instrument base as this Car should look Classic
    3) seats in the Back of the New Sl is a waste of space
    4) it dosnt have the automatic wind protecter
    5) The price is to Much for what you get compared to Before
    so to sum it up the Major issue for me is The Bagage space No hard top no automatic wind breaker and the new car just dosnt seem like a SL yes design looks nice but the comfort from the model before is not there

Smh hopefully in another mmm 5 years or so we’ll get that adjustment but sadly it’ll probably have some electric drivetrain additive. as long as it’s ONLY mild hybrid assist I’ll like it. plug in hybrids are so dumb to me. Now you have to manage TWO fuel sources. that’s LESS practical

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary Месяц назад

      It might be less practical but the savings when running on Electric make it worth while in normal plug-in hybrids.
      You basically top up the electric when you can and when you want to (whenever’s convenient).
      And besides with the SL, they do now offer a “Plug-in Hybrid” but it’s not for making local driving cheaper. It’s to make it faster using Formula 1 Technology.
      So total power output would be 816hp 🤯
      The hybrid system is to offer short very powerful bursts of energy. It can even recharge the battery on hot laps in some scenarios due the brake regen!
