I can almost guarantee you that if you reached out to Jack Pearson he would do a sky meeting like you did with Ian. He is one of the most humble dudes you will ever meet.
Jack Pearson is the most underrated guitarist of all time. The fact that he does it all on Squiers makes him even cooler. And as always, the TTB is the best band on the planet.
Cool that you used the video I recorded. Thanks for explaining some of that musical wondrousness I witnessed that evening. Wish I could have provided a better quality video but it was an iPhone 7 so you get what you get,. Glad people are getting to hear what some of us heard that night. Peace.
Jack is actually playing lot of Dickey and Duane's solos from Fillmore East, Liz Reed, You Don't Love Me, and Whipping Post, with King Curtis's Soul Serenade. Derek knows those solos just as well. Jack's embellishments are astounding, but no surprise if you were fortunate to see him with the ABB the year before Derek joined. He particularly shone on both versions of Dreams I saw him play, one of them 30 minutes. He and Dickey Betts went after each other all night long in a wonderful guitargument. Jack's tinnitus issues have kept him from the recognition he deserves.
I was there that night. It was church man. Was a couple of days after Butch died. Jack told me that was one of the most special nights of music for him, his band opened and killed.
@@johnshanesyandtheaccommoda1189 that's what I figured, and I've seen all of them, just baffles me that I don't remember him mentioning it. It would def be something I should remember. Thx
Around 8 mins you see Derek look down on the ground(and Michael asks “a wah on it?”) but it’s actually this thing he does with his nails mimicking a wah sound. He does it on Marty’s guitar show and I’ve seen him show it on his IG. Pretty wild

Never has one solo made me wanna quit guitar and play guitar so much as this one. I’m 3 years in as a 16 year old, Jack and Derek make grin like no other players in the world
You are definitely listening to the right influences. Get your inspiration from these two, Duane, Dickey, and Warren like Marcus king did. Do that and I’ll be paying to come hear you one day
Had the pleasure of attending MTSU in the late 90's when Jack's band was playing every Wednesday for $5 at the Boro. The best blues shows I've ever seen anywhere, ever. He is a bad man. Maybe the baddest. Certainly in my top 3 favorites of all-time.
This dude is so good. I put him in Duane territory.he's mostly just paying attention to the drummer and doing what he wants to do. He's got that jazzy feel in his improvisation like Duane would do. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Dude I was there! This might be the best live performance of any song I’ve ever seen played in my 25 years of concert going. Such raw emotion after the passing of Uncle Butch.
What can you say about this level of play...outstanding!!! I mean how can you even stand next to Derek onstage and actually upstage him. I'm sure Derek is grinning from ear to ear. This just doesn't happen. The legacy of the allman brothers. Shines brighter every year. Kudos!!!
When's the last time you heard someone play a virtually "off the rack" Squire and completely kill like that? Derek and Jack, my 2 favorites of all time. Such an awesome pairing and and awesome song with one of the tightest bands you'll ever see. Thanks for letting it play for the most part. I've watched THIS video twice now, and I'll more than likely watch it again.
We love watching you semi-befuddled, Mike! It's performances like this that make me realize that I'm light years away from being "expert". Thanks for making a little sense of it for us.
Michael - I share your enthusiasm and thanks for posting. Jack Pearson is one of the best guitarist on the planet and captures Duane’s phrasing like no one else. He pulled the best out of Derek on this night and Derek’s slide sounded like Duane on steroids. I’ve played Allman music on my guitar for 40 years - wearing out a Les Paul and a few Fillmore vinyls learning every lead - so I know what it takes to capture the energy. This was the best Elizabeth Reed I’ve ever heard.
Sp glad I stumbled across your channel! I get it, this is a guitarists paradise, and you guys geek out in your own way,... i've not seen this performance-- i am a drummer, and a huge ABB guy.. my goodness these drummers shine on this amazing performance.. Of course Derek, Susan, and the rest just slay it... like ABB reincarnated.. wow. thanks for the insightful post!
The “key change” is a song called ‘Soul Serenade’. The Allman Brothers Band used to throw that in during some songs also. I’ve mainly heard it in the song ‘You Don’t Love Me’ like from the A&R studios gig bootleg from ‘71. Jack put it in there as a nod to butch and the brothers for Derek, I believe. *EDIT* sorry for repeating the same thing others have said. I didn’t check the comments before leaving mine. D’oh!
Jack is an amazing player. I've had the pleasure of seeing him meeting him a few times. Super cool & nice dude too. He was playing with Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie back in the early 2000s in Gadsden, AL in a little bar called Chestnut Station. I recorded that show on mini disc & still have it somewhere.
Saw Jack at the Jam for Duane in Gadsden in 2007 I think. Derek Trucks in 2004 at the Cultural Arts Center there in Gadsden too. Music in Gadsden was great around that time.
@@VincentVader Same here, they were a great thing for the area. Does anything of that nature, or just good music still happen locally, well before covid?
One of the best iterations of ABB was Jack and Dickey. Unfortunately, Jack had to stop touring due to illness and severe tinnitus. He is a living legend.
I have an ‘83 Japanese Squire Bullit, it’s absolutely flawless, and it’s hands down the best playing guitar I’ve ever held. It has an incredibly flamed neck, and I got it for about $300.
Jack's got Soul. I'm biased: but my favorite video yet! Thank you for introducing others to Jack! I'm glad that fella wrote you. Big thanks to him as well. I don't know how many people are aware that Jack's hand technique reproduces sounds you would hear with some pedals. His tone is more natural though. Too bad he had to leave the Brothers because Dickey was too loud on stage & it worsened Jack's tinitus. Oh it was so sweet to hear them go into King Curtis' Soul Serenade just like the ABB did. A man that seems to shy away from recognition, but is confident in his playing and willing to share what he knows. What a guy. That sounds like a guy running a youtube channel we all frequent. Hmmm...
Soooo much fun Michael! Jack is extraordinary, and you know Derek, he got to be around him and those musicians as a kid, soaking up everything. We are lucky to have them making music like that! Thanks man!
Guitarist from Jacksonville fl here, so glad to see the Derek Trucks love! I've learned so much about feel and soul and dynamics from the allmans in general. Awesome channel! Thank you for posting!
The coolest thing about Derek is he loves letting another guitar player shine! Never a contest with Derek!! Derek is the most UNIQUE guitarist on the planet. Probably the best curveball player ever. My favorite is when Derek and Jimmy Herring get together. Those two understand each other more than any other 2 guitar players out there!
I've seen TTB a bunch of times, and they amaze me every single time. Derek is just pure class, and his playing moves me in a way few guitarists have ever done.
AT 8:13 when you ask "did he put the wah on there"; no, its actually something he does with his thumb and the way he holds the pick so that different "textures" hit the string. He talks about it in his interview on RUclips with Marty Music.
I got a fender squire classic vibe 60,s I love to play it, just plays great. Glad to see you playing a squire makes me feel better about mine. I never heard jack before till the other day on another show. He does Wah wah effects without a pedal ,does it with the pick and the way he holds his hand. Never seen anything like some of the things he does. Thanks man, for a great video.
I am blessed to have seen Jack Pearson many times here in my home town of Nashville. He was a regular at small venue clubs like the Station Inn and 3rd & Lindsley. Jack never disappointed at any show I saw regardless of playing solo acoustic or with his or other bands. Sadly he seems to have stopped playing live gigs since Covid. I hope he is well, I surely do miss him.
Jack is super underrated. He's a heck of a guitarist for sure, but he's one that not a ton of people have heard. He's a guitarists guitarist, that kinda thing. He certainly meshes well with Derek in any form.

I love seeing you youngins getting into what you missed..You probably were not born when Soul Seranade was written, but it makes me smile to see you get it now.I love what you do with Jerry as well. You are doing a great service to the kids who were not born yet,, or it was not their bag at the time. Your happiness brings me joy. You missed so much. Brian Wilson sang Maybe I just was not born for these times. You just keep doing what you are doing. It brings a smile to old gummers who saw it live. Great work. Ladies and gentlemen, this an example of why when Jack auditioned for The Brothers, Dickey Betts said " We're either going to hire him or I'm going to have to take guitar lessons from him". Warren Haynes persuaded Jack to audition when he and Woody left The Brothers.
Great video as always! I found Jack Pearson through Gregg Allman’s 97 album Searching for Simplicity. Killer acoustic Whipping Post to open the album and then a solid blues album the rest of the way. One of my all time favorite albums. All fans of Jack and ABB should check it out!
What a great way to start a Saturday morning Michael. Hard to believe how many paths the rhythms and key changes went through but I loved how “in the pocket” the drums were throughout that entire section you went through. Loved how Jack uses dynamics as well from slower softer phrasings to just flat out ripping and screams...Congratulations on your channel and how you are mixing your pure love of music and musicianship with music theory,
Met him at Tootsies in Nashville. He was watching a pedal steel player he liked pretty much all night. He literally stayed till close and last 1/2 hour was him up with the band basically talking with Eddie (pedal steel player) musically until close. There was like 10 ppl in the bar and it was best night musically for me.
Elizabeth Reed is such a jam vehicle and Trucks certainly knows how to roll. I also love watching band members communicate or take the lead. It always makes me wonder if it's ever similar to like when a Quarter Back would see something or get an idea and call an audible.
Listen to Live at Fillmore East and the live Eat A Peach sides. You’ll hear the similarities. But this was beyond amazing. The key change is Soul Serenade by King Curtis. Duane and Curtis were friends and after Curtis died, ABB would break into this in the middle of songs like Mountain Jam. Yes TTB is amazing. Yes Jack Pearson is Amazing. This was a good find.
Jack Pearson and Tommy Emmanuel jams are legit.. you're watching 2 masters push each other to the end of the improvisational earth to get the best out of each other.
Great to see you do a Jack Pearson video! I've had the good fortune of seeing him regularly for the last 10 years in Nashville. Never disappoints! Please do a video of his organ trio. They're one of the best bands in Nashville!
Love your commentary brother! Amazing band live. You may want to check out jack pearson and Billy strings do this one in Nashville last year. Incredible. Thanks for what you do man. Keep up the good work!
12:39 "What in god's name...?" Incredible performance and really enjoyed the reaction. While the AV tech side sucked, the vid certainly carried the emotion and energy coming off that stage on what must have been a very difficult time. I went to the full vid and listened to the 1st half then came back here - well worth a listen. Pearson is a beast. Thanks yet again MP. EDIT: I just realized why Pearson is so familiar to me - he was the lead guitarist for Renegade, a very popular bar band in the late 70s who did stints here in Fl (note there were like 5 bands called Renegade!). I must've seen him several times as a teenager, but only now connected it after reading his bio. Amazing.
That slow blues that Derek started is "Soul Serenade" by the late King Curtis. The Allmans first played it as a tribute to the Saxophonist shortly after he was killed. Duane threw it in during another song they were playing live after he spoke about Curtis' death during a gig. The Bros played it occasionally over the years
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is all about the journey. I don't think they know exactly how each song will play out when they start a song. They have broad theory and let instinct take over.
Jack Pearson should be more widely known. I saw him on tour with the Allman Bros back in the 90’s ( foggy recollections) but he was just fantastic. He was seated due to some health issue, but damn.
Jack Pearson... Wow, dude was not on my radar... Ever feel like WTF am I living under a rock LOL! Now I have to go on a deep dive into Jack Person! Thank you - And... that band! Such bad asses! Trucks is amazing as always. This is Magic!
Thank you so much for what you do. I am doing the lessons from you and it was watching you break songs down that “really” got me to pick up the guitar again! Thanks bro. You are an inspiration. Also, one of the videos you did, you had you new born baby with you. Beautiful baby! Hope you and your family stay safe and are always blessed! I know you have done a few Umphrey’s songs but, will you please do Mulche’s Odyssey. Studio or live. Live is better but, either one would be awesome. Thanks man
At 14.06 some Roy B harmonics, through is solo he plays quotes, nice. Performance also according Dutch standards 😉is exceptional, not enough words to express. And thnx for the tips on this magic. Keep on!!
We all know Jack is an amazing player, if you ever get the chance to meet him you'll be absolutely blown away. He is one of the most unassuming, humble and down to earth guys you'll ever meet, a true treasure. I watched him sit in one night in a dive bar in my town with a group called Fathers and Sons, oh my God to hear Jack, Will McFarlane, and Kelvin Holly all playing together.... Gives me goosebumps. If you don't know the two guys I mentioned get familiar with them.
So cool to learn that Jacks go to is a Squier - I own a couple high end humbucking guitars but still grab my 2002 era Squier with some EMG pickups 9 outta 10 times because it FEELS good. As always, thanks for the good content Michael!
I'm glad Jack's on your radar Michael. He's the guy a guy like you should be paying attention to. I live in Nashville, and all my favorite players - when they want to be inspired - they go see Jack. He's on a whole other level for sure - and even if you've achieved mastery of your instrument - he can teach you a thing or two. He does all kinds of tricks with the instrument as well, I bet you when he did that wah thing he was doing it with his fingers - I've seen him to it live without even having a pedal. He can do a delay like that too - it's super cool. Take some time if you can and find some of his other stuff on RUclips people have uploaded - I'm sure it will give you some great ideas for lessons.
Catching up on some missed vids! Should be a decent fri afternoon, Hope all goes well on sunday my good sir! Looking forward to hearing something a bit different. Cheers brother! - Anything with trucks and im buckled in for the ride. Edit- those were some of the tastiest ascending and descending licks ever by pearson!!

Just kiddin, I’m watching the whole thing, Derek is my favorite player right now. I’ve bought 3 different slides, dedicated a couple of guitars to different tunings and made a custom slide for myself in an effort to do SOME of that stuff. Awesome channel and awesome subscribers!
Pretty sure it was because in the beginning when he was playing he wound up out of the key or tonal center he started in...kind of running around all over the place, hence "de (not or out of) the tonal center or key signature. I could be wrong but I think that about sums it up
I can almost guarantee you that if you reached out to Jack Pearson he would do a sky meeting like you did with Ian. He is one of the most humble dudes you will ever meet.

Jack is the most humble and generous player alive. a rare quality these days. The Master!!!
Goosebumps. What a band!
Liz Reed>Les Bres for a second?>Soul Serenade.!? What the fuck!? Amazing
Jack Pearson and Tommy Emmanuel jams are legit.. you're watching 2 masters push each other to the end of the improvisational earth to get the best out of each other.
Midnight in Harlem where Derek plays amazing slide. Brings tears and goose bumps.
I’ve said it a million times , hands down one of the best bands out there working today!!
Jack Pearson is taking the audience and the band on a journey. Those 2 drummers are nsync
12:39 "What in god's name...?"
Incredible performance and really enjoyed the reaction.
Amazing.
goes into 'soul serenade'. That old jam duane did with King Curtis. So cool.
Thanks for posting Michael
That slow blues that Derek started is "Soul Serenade" by the late King Curtis. The Allmans first played it as a tribute to the Saxophonist shortly after he was killed. Duane threw it in during another song they were playing live after he spoke about Curtis' death during a gig. The Bros played it occasionally over the years
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is all about the journey. I don't think they know exactly how each song will play out when they start a song. They have broad theory and let instinct take over.
The Duane version is on "live at a&r studios" it's you don't love me/soul serenade. One of my favorite recordings of all times
Cornell Dupree - (King Curtis live at Fillmore band) Allman/Trucks band !!!
I was there that night! It was incredible. the version with Billy Strings is great also
Jack Pearson should be more widely known. I saw him on tour with the Allman Bros back in the 90’s ( foggy recollections) but he was just fantastic. He was seated due to some health issue, but damn.
Just found your channel. I'm liking these videos. It helps to brush up on some theory knowledge.
Jack Pearson... Wow, dude was not on my radar... Ever feel like WTF am I living under a rock LOL! Now I have to go on a deep dive into Jack Person! Thank you - And... that band! Such bad asses! Trucks is amazing as always. This is Magic!
Soul Serenade is an Aretha song that King Curtis (and others) covered.
Saw Jack at the Ryman a couple times, also a an encore guy with Govt Mule and with TTB and oh my was it magical...
Thanks man
What a great pic by one of your fans...brilliant!
No wah- that’s all in Jack Pearson’s hands! I love how Derek looks for it like, what the hell? (Look around the 8 min mark.)
At 14.06 some Roy B harmonics, through is solo he plays quotes, nice. Performance also according Dutch standards 😉is exceptional, not enough words to express. And thnx for the tips on this magic. Keep on!!
mates from ABB day. Love these folks
Had no idea who the cap wearing guitarist was with Dickey Betts when the ABB hit the stage in the mid-90s. Found out, though.
At 7:58 I’m pretty sure it’s not a wah! He has that built in his fingers. Crazy stuff.
So cool to learn that Jacks go to is a Squier - I own a couple high end humbucking guitars but still grab my 2002 era Squier with some EMG pickups 9 outta 10 times because it FEELS good. As always, thanks for the good content Michael!
You need to do the og of Liz reed Version at Fillmore East 71
Mike that is all into King Curtis Soul Seranade. It all goes back to Duane. King was Duanes hero and friend. Its all on Live at the Fillmore.
Yeah, Jack doesn't take any prisoners.
MAIL! USPS MAIL! Well done, sir!
“Hang on to something long enough, it becomes the tonic doesn’t it?” Now I don’t have to watch the rest of the video, my daily music concept has been learned. Just kiddin, I’m watching the whole thing, Derek is my favorite player right now. I’ve bought 3 different slides, dedicated a couple of guitars to different tunings and made a custom slide for myself in an effort to do SOME of that stuff. Awesome channel and awesome subscribers!
Think he says "detonic"
sean markowitz - I don’t know what that is...
Pretty sure it was because in the beginning when he was playing he wound up out of the key or tonal center he started in...kind of running around all over the place, hence "de (not or out of) the tonal center or key signature. I could be wrong but I think that about sums it up
