The version that came with Madness Returns on console was not a graphically improved version just a straight port to the console with some shoddy controls added in for the PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers also 'mods' were never available on these versions of American Mcgee's Alice.
Nivada Star Yeah. Shoddy is a great way to describe those controls. I never played the game on a computer, but moving around in American McGee's Alice on the Xbox was a major pain.
I discovered this game thanks to madness returns, or at least, that was what I thought at the first place. When I told my father about Madness returns he said: "Oh, is that the second part of American McGee's Alice?" I looked at him confused. He told me that he played the game when it came out, and I played it too 5 years later with him when I was 3 years old. I don't remember it, but he told me that I loved that game, and now I'm still loving it!
@Kaylen Do It matters from household to household. I was raised on Tim Burton, Wes Craven, Stephen King and many other great directors & artists that focused on dark or gothic themes. My mom and I always had a soft spot for horror, it’s really all I ever watched. Years later and I’m as goth as ever lol. I do admit, growing up I was surprised with how many children my age were scared of the horror genre.
Yes your father is right! You can see the same characters are used in madness returns, I loved playing these when I was younger brings back good memories
I remember this game! I remember I'd wake up to use the bathroom and find my mother playing it. It took forever to get me to lay back down because I wanted to watch her play. Ahhh memories
I seriously love this game. It took the potential of turning Alice in Wonderland into a horror. I always believed that Alice in Wonderland would make a great horror story. I just hope we will get a movie next time. Tim Burton, who is the King of Gothic Media, fucked up with Alice in Wonderland. I just hope that someday, somebody will adapt this game into an actual movie. This is perfect gothic horror.
Actually it wasn’t tim burton who fucked it up, it was...Linda wolverton....Linda wolverton, the same woman who made such classics like beauty and the beast...made this movie, yeah, how low has she gone?
angie montgomery yes also the sequel too and also i found Weird that American mcgee Alice version was going to be writer by John August who have writer some tim Burton modern films And he was not the one who wrote Alice in wonderland
BTW guys the resolution look like this because it is an older game, before 1080p. We upscaled the full video to 1080p but we didn't want to stretch it out and make it look weird.
+Umut Dereli there is the upcoming Alice: Otherlands which is being crowdfunded, two episodes in a series were released as an advertisment to it the first is called Leviathan the 2nd is something to do with an opera or something i haven't seen them yet
I love how these games portray the actual darkness and creepiness of the original book, not the crappy sugar coated Disney version. The original story of Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the looking glass are very dark ones, so I am very appreciative of how creepy and dark this game is
Johanna Flenner I agree Sure as much as I love the Disney version, the animation not the shitty live action flicks, it just doesn't live up to the original book to me One thing this game very certainly succeeds at where the Disney films fail I don't know, for me the games feel like a much more faithful and creepier adaption of the original book Instead of feeling like the typical family friendly, cheery Disney stuff that is fed to us from childhood And that to me, I appreciate about the games
this game was such a masterpiece, the soundtrack was amazing and so was the voice acting. slower burning creepiness than madness returns. thanks for uploading
The atmosphere of this game seems better than the newer one. Not gonna lie though I'm having a blast with it (Madness Returns). It would totally be bad ass to have an HD remaster of the original though.
I love how true to the book this game is. There are so many things in it that aren't featured in the movie, and it really captures the...victorian-ness of the original, something the movie really fails at. Alice is an amazing protagonist, smart and clever and witty, and logical just like the Alice from the book. This really is a game for fans of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass.
Alice: "I'll have the turtle shell now, you disgusting ogre!" Duchess: "Over my dead body!" Alice: "I'll try to accommodate you!" I snickered a little too hard.
+Ryan Higa Lamp! At The Disco Agree. The problem I have with the first one is that its simply too old. I have that HD version that came with the limited edition of Alice Madness Returns but the controls and camera is just so horrible ugh. Jumping courses are really a nightmare in this game... Unlike its sequel. Maybe once I will play it but right now Im turned off and have other games waiting.
This game is beautiful. Maybe not aesthetically but the story and writing is brilliant. The hopeless state of Wonderland is a metaphor for Alice's madness. She has been supressing memory of losing her parents in the tragic house fire as a coping mechanism, which has stunted her recovery. The war against the Red Queen is symbolic of the difficulty she faces finally trying to accept what happened, en route to reclaiming her sanity. The overall message is to overcome your demons, you first have to confront them.
I can’t complain about the design, for me is absolutely gorgeous! Different from other games made at the time in 3D animation and this one is the best I’ve seen and I love it so much! I really want a HD remake but I admire how the 3D animation is better than most at the time and that can’t be really discussed, this is an amazing and unique game and this is the first time I’ve encountered it, this is just wonderful! *American McGee is a brilliant writer and his take on the alternate story of Alice in Wonderland deserves to be preached and admired by new writers specialized in the genre of horror fantasy, I’m not a writer but I do love horror fantasy and how well crafted it can be by different writers, American McGee has to be one of the best I’ve encountered in all the years I’ve been a fan!*
I've never played a lot of video games and I wasn't allowed to play them at all growing up, AND I hate really low graphics, so I usually hate older video games, but holy crap. This game. I played it a few months ago and within 5 minutes of gameplay, I was in loooove. It's not that it's the BEST game ever, just the feeling it gave me...it was magical. No joke. I only used a cheat on the Queen's final form (I was on easy mode tho, so) and finished it in a few days, which NEVER happens because I rarely EVER finish games.
+blackbox3000 Now that I think about it, I only knew about this game from watching ZDTV in 2000 or 2001 (which might have switched to the TechTV name by then) and seeing an interview with the creator.
Too bad they never made a cutscene for the part of the story only available in the little booklet that came with the game. This game was my shit. I had it in 2 different languages, repurchased rereleases twice when newer PCs refused to play it, bought the booklet on ebay when I lost mine, bought the soundtrack, owned several different versions of the figurines, tried to buy the lifesized statue of Alice & the cheshire for my garden, & waited forever for that Hollywood movie that never came out.

After watching so many Alice: Madness Return videos and coming across the first one... Cheshire looks so... Different. Everything and everyone looks different.
My favorite part about this game is that it's artstyle is based Upon 19th century paintings and photos, unlike the anime/cartoons artstyle of the sequel and Leviathan.

i like both American McGee and Madness Returns. One provides us with a happier ending while the other is darker and leaves the player with information that they didn't know from the first game. Only thing i dislike is in madness return the ending leaves me confused and the fact that some of the plot points in american McGee and Madness Returns just don't make sense. but you know that just my opinion.
She overcame her insanity. It was largely based on survivor guilt and death. But *spoilers of madness returns* when she was released under the care of the doctor her subconscious started reviving her memories of the fire. That was because the doctor was trying to hypnotise her or something like the other kids and the only reason she resisted was the memories of the family murder. The doctor raped her sister and burned the house and that's what her subconscious tried to remind her. The train that destroys everything is the hypnosis. The puppet master is the doctor. She was saved just because her sanity crumbled
Because a person who was institutionalised for a long time would have problems adjusting. She is no longer mad crazy but that doesn't mean she can function normally by herself in a community yet. She needs a proper guardian.. At the age of 7 she was driven mad and catatonic and went to the asylum, at 17 or so she stabilised and eventualy released. What would a 7 year old girl in a 18yo body do without proper care do? After seeing otherlands i can only describe Alice as a mature teenager.
@oran ge I haven't played this game for such a long time but madness returns is the second game . In the games they indeed say that he locked the door and her sister should be able to go out the window but at the same time we know that her parents and her sister were burned and that the doctor was at their house at night and he actually went into the sisters room. Then came out and locked it . Also selling kids to prostitution is his job. I didn't remember much else .
i only played Madness Returns, but you can tell this one has more creative freedom, while AMR, even though it's awesome, you can tell it lacked the potential and creative freedom. this one looks terrifying.
Holy shit, I never knew you could use the Ice Wand to skip the labyrinth! It took me ages to corral that kid, and all this time I could've just right-clicked...I'll have to keep it in mind for next time.
For those who say that the sequel was unnecessary, I know of two things that may make it more necessary for the saga : -The Queen and the Hatter always say that Alice is runing away from the truth. But what truth is she running from ? I mean, she already feels guilty like they want her too, so it can't be that truth; -Most people have got problems with the fact Alice reverted back to her insane state before the first game, right ? Well, I can actually give you reason on that one, but that's why I've got a fan-fic in which Alice was taken in by Bumbi in return of her help in dealing with her patients, because thanks to her trauma and the damage it caused, she has got a better insight on how to deal with the children. This way, she could keep being the healed and once again happy girl that got out of Rutledge Asylum. However, after being around the doctor for some time, her repressed memories start to resurface vaguely in her dreams, and Bumbi, taking advantage of that mental state that weakens her mind, goes to her room every night and hypnotises her, as he wishes to make a prostitute out of her. This way, she can still have these mental issues she acquired on the second game, but still retain the positive personality she acquired after the first game.
great I was beginning, Alice madness return, but I found that it has a prequel I did not find it on steam so I picked it up for free on xbox store, thanks for the link!
The game at that time 2004/5:when i was playing felt INCREDIBLY UNIQUE n SCARY too to play n PROGRESS much further. If only i knew the STORY was this GUD, I wud have played it ANYWAY. Sumtimes i used to PLAY/ TRY GAMES just to know the STORY i.e until UTUBE started uploading (FAST FORWARD) CUTSCENES/ GAMEPLAY on the SAME DAY of GAME's RELEASE n the AVAILABLE CONTENTs wud make us KNOW everything avoiding us the EXPENSE of BUYING n PLAYING. Maybe sumwhere GUD sumwhere too BAD. Anyway the ENDING here was just too BEAUTIFUL.
12:58 I see the video capture was unable to capture the colors of the vortex. I had the same problem with screencaps of the game...The colors just won't show up.
Maybe it is because I saw the playthrough for The Madness Returns, but I like the sequel a whole lot better and I hope Asylum will be just as good. This game seems...awkward.
I'm not much of a game player (I've played about five major games since the NES), but really got into this. This is a suitable alternative to getting everything needed to play it again. I didn't know about the sequel until a few years ago but intend to eventually get a gaming computer again to play it, unless I finally get a console.
If there was ever a game that deserved an HD remake, it's this one.
So true

Man, this game's from 2000. It looks good for that age.
TheAnnabelleCrew hmm.
This was on the same base engine as half life was and for it's time it looks good.
Well it's just not a good platformer, it's like a 3d platformer with first person shooter controls. It's so weird to play.

I think that's the same cat from the beginning
@Svetoslav Nikolov I guess that makes sense

It better than Tim Burton's movie version.
i don't know whether to hug the Cheshire cat or run screaming from him

Technically you should Scream it’s voiced by Roger Jackson who was the phone voice in the Scream movies lol
I'd hug him. Not only I love his voice but I also love cats.
Hug it.

The writing is so good! Why isn't anyone speaking about it?
I like the Cheshire cat's voice in both games, that's like my most favorite aside from the game play and it's story. Ahaha.
Fun fact if I remember correctly the og voice actor along with the others came back for the sequel
This game should have a hd remake... It totally deserves it :)

This game has really good voice acting for a 2000's game, just like the sequel. :D
40:28 i can hear the Music Box from five nights at Freddys 2
i like both American McGee and Madness Returns. One provides us with a happier ending while the other is darker and leaves the player with information that they didn't know from the first game. Only thing i dislike is in madness return the ending leaves me confused and the fact that some of the plot points in american McGee and Madness Returns just don't make sense. but you know that just my opinion.
If not for being bundled with Clive Barker's Undying, I may never have discovered this great game. I still play both to this day.
I love how Alice screams
Memories. This was one of the few games I bought with my own money back in the day and beat on my own. So good.
one of best games i have ever played.
TOTALLY UNDER-RATED series hope Alice: Asylum gets the go ahead from EA
For a game this old those levels are quite intricately structured and far from bland
Wow!!! I never thought of placing the ice shield on the pad in the Majestic Maze! I always had to find the insane kid.
God, even the voice actors are the same as in the new Alice game! (Madness Returns)
How was it possible to continue the story if alice was not insane anymore at the end of the game?
She overcame her insanity. It was largely based on survivor guilt and death. But *spoilers of madness returns* when she was released under the care of the doctor her subconscious started reviving her memories of the fire. That was because the doctor was trying to hypnotise her or something like the other kids and the only reason she resisted was the memories of the family murder. The doctor raped her sister and burned the house and that's what her subconscious tried to remind her. The train that destroys everything is the hypnosis. The puppet master is the doctor. She was saved just because her sanity crumbled
yeah but why she has to go to the doctor when she was fine in the end of the first game?
Because a person who was institutionalised for a long time would have problems adjusting. She is no longer mad crazy but that doesn't mean she can function normally by herself in a community yet. She needs a proper guardian.. At the age of 7 she was driven mad and catatonic and went to the asylum, at 17 or so she stabilised and eventualy released. What would a 7 year old girl in a 18yo body do without proper care do? After seeing otherlands i can only describe Alice as a mature teenager.
Because she's having PTSD
The first game is about her Trauma
The second game is about PTSD
@oran ge I haven't played this game for such a long time but madness returns is the second game . In the games they indeed say that he locked the door and her sister should be able to go out the window but at the same time we know that her parents and her sister were burned and that the doctor was at their house at night and he actually went into the sisters room. Then came out and locked it . Also selling kids to prostitution is his job. I didn't remember much else .
I love the cutscene at the end where you think Alice has recovered and she’s going to school or something, but she ends up at a mental asylum.
The cutscene shows her leaving the asylum after being deemed Sane enough to go, it's not meant to represent her going to school.
Signal Fire
Oh, I see!
one of my fav games. I was so spooked as a kid
The amount of times that i got stuck on these puzzles.
This game was full of quotes
i only played Madness Returns, but you can tell this one has more creative freedom, while AMR, even though it's awesome, you can tell it lacked the potential and creative freedom. this one looks terrifying.
Holy shit, I never knew you could use the Ice Wand to skip the labyrinth! It took me ages to corral that kid, and all this time I could've just right-clicked...I'll have to keep it in mind for next time.
For those who say that the sequel was unnecessary, I know of two things that may make it more necessary for the saga :
-The Queen and the Hatter always say that Alice is runing away from the truth. But what truth is she running from ? I mean, she already feels guilty like they want her too, so it can't be that truth;
-Most people have got problems with the fact Alice reverted back to her insane state before the first game, right ?
Happily ever after... Till Madness Returns!
I always loved Alice in Wonderlad book, and this game and its dark story is pretty amazing, too!
great I was beginning, Alice madness return, but I found that it has a prequel I did not find it on steam so I picked it up for free on xbox store, thanks for the link!
It's not a prequel, Madness Returns is a sequel.
Thanx!I really dig these Alice games:-)And game movies too...
Ok I know I'm like REALLY late, but I just gotta say I love the thumbnail and this game
Glad I'm not the only one.

This is great, I love these games! Is there any chance of you doing the first two Borderlands??
Catey Heeren Yeah possibly part 2, but not sure about the first yet. As I remember, the first Borderlands wasn't as good as the rest of them
12:58 I see the video capture was unable to capture the colors of the vortex. I had the same problem with screencaps of the game...The colors just won't show up.
I love this game so much. For me this game is better than Alice madness returns and the graphics in this game are so cool
Me too! 🤗 🃏♣️♥️♠️♦️
a game i played years ago, still love it!
Maybe it is because I saw the playthrough for The Madness Returns, but I like the sequel a whole lot better and I hope Asylum will be just as good. This game seems...awkward.
kalaharimeerkatfan gameplay wise I'd agree
It *is* awkward and janky but it just adds to the experience and atmosphere to me! 😁
I'm not much of a game player (I've played about five major games since the NES), but really got into this. This is a suitable alternative to getting everything needed to play it again. I didn't know about the sequel until a few years ago but intend to eventually get a gaming computer again to play it, unless I finally get a console.
Most people are the other way around they know about the sequel but not the original. It's a shame really.
This game has an unpleasant atmosphere, even after everything becomes heavenly.
I wish they made this into a movie.
This game needs a remaster.
