I’ve been avoiding this terrifying mountain for years. Today, I finally attempted it. Mont Caro rears nearly a mile above the surrounding coastal plain. It’s brutal - but this time I have a secret weapon….

This was at the top of my bucket-list climbs - what’s on yours?
Mt Ventoux will always be right up there for me - my mythical mountain - will hopefully get back there soon. Glad to see Mrs Yako was in support - so good to have that on these big days.
Just came back from a cykling trip in the south of sweden, where my whole crankshaft fell off! I come home and sit down in front of ol Betty, and your video is just upploaded, what a great happy surprise. Watching it now 1/4 th left and waiting for the spectacular downhill part! Happy Birthday and as always so far a great vid :)🥰 faster than a rocket downhill wooow.... did we see some road rage there 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Oh and Mrs. Jako will have to take a course in drone camera flying and filming:)🤣😂🤣😍
Ha thank you Stefan! I did enjoy that descent, and yes maybe a hint of road rage - I cut A LOT of swearing out of the final edit!
Yako that mountain clime was brilliant and the decent scary but today was your birthday and you certainly enjoyed it, Happy birthday , and many thanks to Mrs Y. For doing some good camera work, panning and zooming grate stuff.cheers jim, catch you on the next adventure,
Thank you! I loved both the climb and descent, it’s an amazing bike. I’ll have to convince Mrs Y to come out again - but it will probably be for my NEXT birthday! Cheers Jim! Yak
What a birthday! Aweseome attempt on the climb, impressive performance from the BH and I think you had way too much fun on the decent - great episode - many thanks! I have the Mount Hotham climb here in Victoria AU on my bucket list - 1340m of elevation over 32km, max-grade 18%, beautiful views.
Sounds fantastic/awful (you know what I mean!) Many thanks Dean. I’ll see if BH will send the bike out to you in Aus after me !-)
Really enjoyed watching this Gareth. Many happy returns!
Glad you enjoyed it Darren! And thank you!
Happy Birthday, what a beautiful scenic route,
Excellent and impressive climbing effort very well done. Worth the climbing just for the decent.
Enjoy the rest of your week
Many thanks Terry! Have a great weekend.
Epic! Well done Yako 👍💪
was that alright? it was pretty hard mate tbh…but at least I got pizza…
Happy Birthday Mr. Yako! Well played on having Mrs. Yako as Directrice Sportif in the team car, you need sponsor’s logos on that car.
Now that’s an idea! Actually get some revenue for a change!
Happy birthday! Enjoyed the video, what a climb..
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff. I did too, once I got to the top of it!
This looks a great ride. I’ll try and look it up if I’m in the area. So good to have it on your doorstep. Next time find a tailwind day 😁
Next time???! Ha, I will. I’ve still got to get to the very top!
Nice work and happy birthday!
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent entertainment and classy 2 camera integration, especially when you were chasing down that 4-wheeled chancer. Your brakes must have been virtually on fire. Not a bad way to spend a birthday, though. Best wishes
Thanks Andy. I was impressed by the brakes; the new heat dissipaters on the rotors seem to make a difference. I’ll pass on the praise to Mrs Yako - maybe it will convince her to come out again!
Happy belated birthday. Gareth an excellent video as always .. the downhill part had me covering my eyes .but well done and great camera work by Mrs y
Glad you enjoyed it Larry!
Happy Birthday!!!
Thank you Sharon!
Happy belated birthday Yako! Great vid. Maybe in a year or so I can get back on a real bicycle! Also pretty sure Remco cried when he got the KOM after gesticulating with Roglic on his wheel lol.
You won’t need to leave it that long buddy, I’m sure. Remco? Cry? like a little man-baby? Surely not!
cheers Bubba!
Happy Birthday, couldn't have had a better birthday present than doing that climb, the descent though gave me sweaty palms just watching it. I am not very good doing descents even though my bikes have disc brakes, I still have the memories of coming a cropper downhill with the old rim brakes !! Question for you, which make of cycling sunglasses with the inserts do you wear ? I am similarly short sighted and just use my normal glasses which are okay but I was thinking of treating myself to some prescription cycling glasses for this summer.
They were the cheapest RockBros cycling shades. I Googled how to press the lenses out of an old pair of glasses, then sanded them down, bevelled the edges then pressed them into the cheap plastic push in frames that came with the wrap-rounds! £15 and an hours work….I should make a video….
@@yakoridesagain Wow, that is what I call a bargain, been looking online and some suppliers want well above £300 for my prescription, worth investigating as I have glasses from my last prescription which are okay not perfect but maybe worth a shot at that, thanks for the reply
I couldn’t believe how easy it was. Lenses push out of frames towards the front. Put masking tape over the lens front and back and use the insert to mark the shape, then simply start sanding down the glass with 80grit sandpaper. When you start getting close to the line, start bevelling the edge 45 degrees both sides (ie make the edge V shaped) remove the tape and start offering up the lens to the insert from the front. Take it slow and be more careful when sanding without the masking tape. You’ll easily see where the extra sanding is needed. When that lens snaps into place you feel like some master craftsman. Both sides took around an hour, maybe less.
@@yakoridesagain I have given your suggestion a go with a pair of the RockBros cycling sunglasses, £15 for photochromic and an old set of my varifocal lenses. It worked pretty well, being very impatient though I used my Dremel as I had to cut away a lot of excess lenses material, but protected lenses as you suggested and got there in the end. I have added a few drops of super glue just to be certain that the lenses are secure. I have a very high prescription and the lenses I have used are quite old, so I think I will give them a try out and if it suits me I will buy another pair and then get them properly glazed at a local opticians with my latest prescription. Will still be significantly cheaper than other options out there.
I would imagine it’s rather harder to cut down varifocals but well done!
A very happy birthday to you. Not sure if it's your physical or mental health I'm more concerned about! What a climb and what a scary descent. Well done Missus, she's getting rather professional with the camera. See you soon I hope.
Thanks Pete! At least my wheels stayed in touch with the ground!
Chapeau 🎩🎩🎩 Yako, Mar Velo us.
Ha! Thank you Michael
That decent looked like hard work but supported by the bacon butty. Happy Birthday.
Thank you, and that’s from an expert ;-)
Happy belated birthday 🎂..you gonna join us for Tour of Catalonya?
Thanks George! I certainly will. I hope they televise more than last year as I’ll be on the biggest climb of the day on Friday too - but it comes halfway through the stage. I did say hi yesterday for San Remo btw
What an epic effort. I bet you had to watch your heart rate closely. Very well done proud of you buddy. Best I have done is Alpe De Zwift which was a killer at 1075m and 31.8 km up and down. How long were you climbing? took me 2hrs 26m of steady Z2. ride down virtually was over 50mph. Supposed to replicate Alpe d'Huez in France.
I forgot about the bpm later in the climb…foolish, but I felt good…but virtual or no, your ride was higher as I only made 1025m in 2hrs 10, descent maxxed at 70kmh due to all of the hairpins…Your Solace would have been perfect for this…Cheers Russ!
Happy birthday Gareth & I bet that car driver really got on your nerves. 🤦🏻
Well he did. Didn’t want to be overtaken, but he hadn’t taken over two hours to get up there so it should have been me, me, me, frankly!
I live in a bungalow so I don't have to go upstairs. So no climb is on my bucket list. You did a wonderful job climbing up Mount everest. Mrs Yako made a great sherpa. Happy birthday, did you get my card? I put 50€ in it? If not it was probably the post office stealing again. If you made some wings you could take off on those descents.
God bless
Those thieving posties! No, I got nothing from you Riccardo! Def need to rethink buckets in the future. Cos they’re not the future…
Brilliant climb and happy birthday! Did you have much power left at the end and do you think you could have made it on the orbea too? 😅
Halloo! Thanks Linda. I had just under a quarter left. I would have struggled on my Gain for certain, but I’m still hoping to try this same climb on the X20 Gain in a direct comparison.
Super way to celebrate your birthday.
Probably better for me than cake…thanks John!
Well done Gareth that looked amazing but the downhill looked a bit sketchy. Happy Birthday and a shout out to Mrs Yako for getting some great footage and helping you with the vlog
I live for those descents! This one was tricky as both road and bike were new to me and though the BH is amazing, it is a little small for me which only really surfaces descending. Thanks for the support Heidi.
