    I totally disconnected from gaming for a long time (about 10 years) and decided to get back into it last summer. I got a cheap second hand Wii U to enjoy Breath of the Wild and a number of other games on that system, and I got an XBox 360 S really cheap and am really enjoying that console. The games may be old, but they are new to me, and there isn't much on other newer consoles that would make me go with them instead of what I did opt for
    This video is DEFINITELY for me!!

      Just found out it's a Trinity... thanks for showing how to identify it!!
      I find this information is also good even if I decide not to mod it in the future, because knowing there is something that can be done should the DVD drive decide to fail is good... although I tend to fully install the games I'm playing on the hard drive, and that's easy to replace should it fail, and it takes some of the stress off the DVD drive.
      I can get a Kinect sensor from the same store I got the XBox from, and they have them for about €6 (plus €6 shipping)... I may get one next time I get something from there, as they charge same shipping for 2 items as they do for one, and then i have it there to collect dust!!

    I used to get 360's from ewaste and restore them to usable conditions. Never found a RRoD'd Jasper out of the 100+ 360's I got. Most of the time the dvd drive belts were just slipping. That revision is (in my opinion) for sure the most reliable.

      I know this comment is a year old, but I will definitely confirm this for anyone trying to buy a 360. My 1 year limited warranty according to my microsoft account page expired in 2011. As much as I hate to say it this console has seen some warfare. I happen to be a smoker, 1 or 2 drops on hardwood. Neglected to clean out the internals until semi recently. But it has never RRoD'd on me. Most I ever get is the occasional sticky tray. It works perfectly, despite being quite laggy sometimes. It is without a doubt the single most reliable fat motherboard imo.

    I am one of those Laggers that completely missed the Xbox360 and for that matter the PS3 as well... I have been a PC Gamer for a long time so I just never invested in consoles until 2020 when the Covid shutdown resulted in just enough boredom to make me buy both a 360 and a PS3. I immediately jailbroke the PS3 and that kept me busy for a while but when the 360 arrived I actually created an Xbox account and took it online and I may not even RGH it, I may just collect physical games for the 360 cuz I'm nuts like that.

      Know this is 2 years old, but still had to reply, all YOU needed to know is to get a jasper xbox, xbox 360s or e model. Because of low failure rates. Everything else is about how to pretty much hack the xbox, something that your pre teen son probably doesn't know how to do (I'd imagine if he did he would tell you to buy a rgh xbox off ebay and that he'd probably guide you to do or tell you which model to get). This video is mainly for xbox enthusiasts that like to modify the system to play backups of games or games downloaded off the web. (Which is technically piracy)

    To be fair I have no interest in modding a 360, I'm more interested in trying to figure out which model to trust not to become a red ring/dot paperweight.
    But this was a very well done in-depth analysis of the 360, on the modding and revision side of things.

    Found out I got a Jasper and a Trinity. Pretty excited about that. I guess I won't sell my Xbox 360's then. I can vouch for the Jasper being a reliable console as I guy randomly gave it to me missing the power button, faceplate and literally internally buried in what seem like pounds of dust. After a full clean out of dust, debris and hair I was amazed it came on and it kept coming on. Planning on getting a replacement power button and modding the Jasper or the Trinity down the line. Just wanted to say thank you for your instructables, as I am one of the few lady modders out here, who sometimes sells and you have help a bunch. Much appreciated.

    About the lan/wlan stuff: you can grab any kind of repeater (or router capable of working in that mode) and simply hook it up with the fat x360 lan. Its solves the lan/wlan problem, and a repeater/router have way more powerfull wifi than those dongles.

    My first Xbox 360 model was the the Pro aka "Premium" model from 2007 with the Zephyr motherboard (first Xbox 360 with HDMI) and it eventually succumbed to the dreaded red ring of death due to a GPU failure. I eventually replaced it with an Xbox 360 S model containing the Corona motherboard in 2012 before the hardware started to go sour just a year ago. I currently use the Trinity version of the Xbox 360 S from late 2010 and it functions flawlessly and performs better than my old Corona model.
    As an avid 360 gamer myself, here's the advice I'd give for acquiring the most reliable model:
    1. Avoid every original model from 2005 to 2007 with the Xenon and Zephyr motherboards at all costs. They are the most susceptible to the dreaded red ring of death. Xenon has atrocious CPU capacitors and GPUs. Zephyr has improvements with CPU capacitors but it doesn't do jack squat since the GPU is still atrocious as it is.
    2. Be very careful about the Falcon models from late 2007 to early 2008. Late Falcon models from 2008 are a lot more reliable than the early Falcon models from 2007 but even then, I've seen lots of late Falcon models from 2008 succumb to the red ring of death over the years.
    3. If you want the most reliable original model with the least chance of getting the red ring of death, settle for the Jasper model (late 2008 - mid 2010).
    4. If you don't want the original model, settle for the early S model with the Trinity motherboard (2010 to mid 2011) since those don't use the 4GB NAND and have a good reputation for high reliability rates (just not quite at the Jasper's level). Be cautious about picking up models from late 2011 to 2013 containing the Corona motherboard and the E models if you can, especially ones with the 4GB NAND flash chips since those are the source of all hardware failures in the later S and E models. The reason I don't recommend any of the E models is because it's prone to XCGPU issues and the early E models use the Corona motherboard.

      My 2007 Zephyr was refurbished by Microsoft as late as June 2009. From what people have said, it sounds like the repaired Zephyr Units are still somewhat as reliable as early Falcons. I've also got a Jasper V2 Tonasket Kronos but I want to use the refurbished console this winter.

  • @Dark_Jaguar
    @Dark_Jaguar Год назад

    Five years later and I stumble across this helpful video. I had one of the fat 360 models from back in the day which died on me, so I replaced it with an S. Like you, I prefer that matte finish. I've since found scrapped units and went and swapped the black trim on the sides with the chrome trim from another model. The black trim actually looks really nice on the white S by the way, so it was a straight upgrade for both models. I also certainly appreciate having that extra 4GB of storage to play around with.
    Thanks to your video, I grabbed an older fat unit online and got it restored inside and out. It turns out to be a bit of a rare bird. The internal makeup shows all the signs of being a Jasper v1, but it's got a clearly marked Kronos chipset as well as solid state caps, like some kind of in-between unit. Manufacture date is 2009-07-17 so that might say something. In any case, after replacing the all-too-fragile faceplate with an intact unopened "woodgrain" one I snagged off eBay nice and cheap, the thing's looking very nice. I also have a HD-DVD drive which I can use as a USB multitap for connecting all kinds of extra peripherals to make up for it only having 3 USB ports. Ethernet to it's spot is no issue either, so won't be missing the wifi.
    Now it's only a matter of deciding which of these two will be my main "Live" unit and which one will be my hacked unit. Your video indicates the Jasper is the easier of the two to mod... but I'm still not too sure. Heck I may just wait it out until MS turns off the 360 servers for good and just mod both of them at that point.

    My favorite feature from the Xbox 360 that is one of my favorite features of all time was:
    The ability to convert USB drives into official Xbox 360 storage!!!
    You could have one USB drive that had your profile, game save states, even a few of your smaller games and all of your avatar stuff, ready to take with you if you needed to have it with you going to your buddies house?!
    And then you could have the second USB drive filled with thousands of custom songs from all of your favorite artists(fully legit and not pirated off the Internet of course…)
    The only reason the newer systems got rid of this feature was so that they could try to profit by selling subscription services to groove music in Spotify-
    Bunch of bullshit that they got rid of this because this was my favorite feature on Xbox 360 and it allowed you to keep your Xbox 360 organize to where that it was more efficient!! Your bulk game data went on your hard drive, while all your save states and smaller stuff could go on your USB drive and or memory unit!!

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  2 года назад

      On the music mention for newer systems, would you believe me if I told you that you can still do that all on newer consoles? It just isn't really advertised these days, most likely for the reason you mentioned where they're pushing services like Spotify to the forefront.
      I listen to a lot of music that is delisted or never officially released on streaming services by artists, so on my PS5 I keep a flash drive plugged in with a bunch of music on it like I'm living in 2008. It totally blew a friend's mind when he saw it like "YOU CAN PLAY MP3S ON THIS????????" since he thought you could only play music through Spotify.
      Although USB drives being used for profiles is long gone, even game saves being exported is becoming a distant memory. Back to the PS5: You can export PS4 saves to USB, but there's currently no way to export PS5 saves.

    I Still Think the Jasper is the Best 360 out of all of them. Years ago I thought all the OG 360's were garbage until i did my homework in 2016. The Jaspers run cooler imo than the Slim and E models. I got 4 jsaper 360's One MW2 (my main one) 2 Elites (one of them is a PAL region one that was MFG in march of 2010, Probably the last batch of Og 360's) and the red Resident evil one.

    You CAN actually play burned games (kinda) on a hardmodded 360. If you copy the data on a burned disk to the HDD, you can run it, but the disk is not gonna be the place you run the game from, it's gonna be the HDD.

    Mr mario, you should do a video about fixes and for common 360 failures, like a stuck drive or quality of life mods like replacing the stock thermal paste. Recently I was given a Resident Evil red elite that had been gone through hell and back and I had to do a disk drive belt and thermal paste replacement, after that not only it ran cooler but quieter and the disk drive opens with no issues. So I think it would be helpful for everyone looking for extending the lifespan of their consoles.

    I have a 360 E, which I think looks great. It was a birthday present from my wife back when it was still a thing. I did a hard drive mod to get a 500GB hard drive on it. I'm not really intested in mods on top of that though, since I care about my Xbox Live account etc.
    I did mod my Wii though, since Nintendo doesnt really care anymore.

      @XtremeBG 6 лет назад

      yes, I have the same, mine is november 2009, so is this the best 360 ? is it better than the standart jasper v1 ? because I red the differences are Introduced 65 nm eDRAM. Introduced new RF-module, new style GPU Kronos revision. Eliminated the E74 problem from earlier jasper models, according to wikipedia and also the GPU heatsink is the same as the old from xenon, is this better or not ? because yes it is smaller but in the same time it takes less space so it allows more space for airflow in the system inside

    • @batmangovno
      @batmangovno 6 лет назад +1

      Baqt Yeah, the most stable and cool Fat system. Overheating will never be an issue. In hacking and homebrewing it's mostly as good as other Fats but it's DVD drive isn't as easy to hack.

    Many people could say PCMR, and I agree, but something they won't mention is that you cannot run console exclusives without issues, Xenia has done a regression and a lot of games don't even boot, and so does RPCS3, so I was forced to get out my good ol PS3, and force it to stop collecting dust, and will be getting a Xbox 360 soon. I estimate it'll take a good 2-3 years before emulation really works well maybe.

    I didn't intend on getting any console because I'm a part of the PC Master Race, but I put my old (and quite useless) laptop on sale and a dude asked if I'd swap for a fat 360 with 2 controllers and a 20gb HDD. As I had zero other offers, I said what the heck and went for it. It ended up being a Jasper, so I found a dude to JTAG it for me (I could do it myself but it's a way bigger hassle to find a mod chip here without the service of installing it). The dude did a bit of a dodgy job, so I had to touch up on some of his solder points and isolate the wiring a bit better (the console would randomly RROD and then work after a couple restarts). Got a bunch of random 360 games from a friend that switched to Xbone, bought a 750GB HDD (also ended up buying a PS1 from the same guy for some reason), installed Aurora (the guy installed FSD but I didn't like it), put those on the HDD and started playing.
    I like the isolated gaming platform feel and I've had loads of fun so far in the last 6 months I've been using it, especially since I've moved it to my new TV, as previously I've been playing on an older monitor with speakers. It gives me a similar feel to old consoles I've owned or still own (Atari 2600, NES, Mega Drive 2) so I ended up finishing a couple of games I never could make myself play on the PC, as something else would grab my attention (I also do my work, record and mix music and do some video editing on the PC).
    It is a great system, the only thing it lacks is something like a XBMC, as the media format support of the core system is abysmal.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  6 лет назад +1

      I definitely feel that, I too am a PCMR member and have a pretty solid rig (i7 6700K, 1080 Ti) but I still love messing around and playing with consoles. As you said, it's nice having something isolated only for games and even working properly while being kept offline. I've been frequenting the PS2, Xbox, PSP, and Switch in recent months. PCMR is still the best by a technical standard, but I love the ease and convenience of consoles. Sure I'll get a lesser experience, but if I'm enjoying the game then I don't see much of an issue. Keeps me humble too, I can easily go from Silent Hill chugging at 15 FPS to any other game maxed out and looking pretty on PC :P

    • @epidemicmagick
      @epidemicmagick 6 лет назад

      Yeah, it also brings me back to high school, as some games chug around at single digit FPS for a lot of time (the latter two Earth Defense Force and The Last Remnant, to be exact), just like my then shoestring budget AMD Athlon machine :D
      On a more serious note, it is a great entry point for people like myself to rediscover console gaming, I'm now looking to get an original Xbox and a fat PS2 so I could beef up my gaming setup for the summer house, alongside PS1 and an old retro PC.

      It's still a thing for legacy analog devices, and the standard has been around for so long at this point. It might not matter to us, but it matters to the grandma who just got a new TV and wants to hook up her DVD player in composite! Movie studios will still enforce region locking and those standards but at least game companies are now coming around. The three big supported consoles at the moment (Xbox One, PS4, Switch) are all region free for physical releases.
