@@majincheers406 They already about to finish book 4 of Korra
Code Monkeys are you just guessing or are you fire sure about that lol
The way Katara stops that one attack from Hama is super Earthbender. A waterbender would have continued to redirect it. Katara’s time with Toph has been good for her and the whole team is growing so much from each other!
Another nice attention to detail is that Hama looked surprised after that, someone who wouldn't know how to forcefully stop water like that.
Also the move she used at the end when she crossed her arms, it's not usually mentioned much, look at the form
And her move of jumping through the water during the fight is something aang does in season 2. Very airbender
@Trashthlete yes without being the avatar, knowing all ways of bending which are different way to move sohuld bring a certain form of balance. because let's think of it for a second. a battle of two benders of the same element is basically decided based on the energy distribution and the control out of the moves.
ultimately the best bender are the ones directing the most energy possible with the least movement possible.
Thank you for noticing that!! 😎👍
"Congratulations Katara, you're a blood bender"
The whole ass village around her: "She's a what??"
"You're a bloodbender, Harry"
"I'm a what?!"
I know, but my headcanon is that the villagers were willing to look the other way since the Gaang just freed the captives and took out Hama. They just want it to end.
@@eowynsisterdaughter That and they figured that Katara just took down an OP (in the village's eyes) waterbender. And Katara did it using a technique that she literally learned minutes ago, against the the techniques inventor.
It's just as likely that the villagers wanted to capture/kill Katara for the sake of stopping the spread of bloodbending, but they knew that they couldn't and didn't want to give Katara a reason to use it.
Worst case scenario, the villagers were like: "We thank you for saving us, but as soon as the full moon ends, we're going to have to politely ask that you leave the village. Please?" Saying it in a way that demonstrated that Katara was in charge.
@@evetea9780 loool
It is funny to think that but this series, and this episode in particular, focuses on the theme of looking past prejudices.
Many people of the other kingdoms, specifically those who were harmed by the Fire Nation the most, seem to think its a kingdom full of evil men and women who support the conquest of the world. However, in reality, they are just the same as everybody else and just happened to be born into that nation. Hama fails to realize this and believes that the people of the village deserve punishment for the actions of Fire Nation's military as a whole. However, the people of this village don't hate Katara or villainize her because she is a waterbender because that prejudice does not exist within everybody in the Fire Nation.
It isn't shown as explicitly in this episode in particular, but in the Painted Lady episode, when Katara revealed she was a waterbender to a village in the Fire Nation, they were more mad about her impersonating their local deity than her actually being from an opposing nation. Most people of the Fire Nation are, surprisingly, not that diehard for the Fire Nation....save the capital city where people are brainwashed to be.
Can you imagine how much bloodbending would hurt? A person literally pulling your blood, stretching, contracting, dilating your blood vessels and muscles. All of that tension and forceful movement must cause a lot of pain, especially if you resist. I feel like it was definitely implied here that this technique is very painful for the person being controlled, which just adds another layer to the creepiness and why Katara considers it be extremely unethical.
Yup it’s confirmed in Korra how painful it feels.
I feel like if G.R.R. Martin or a competent enough writer with a similar style like him was involved, the ATLA universe could be *WAY* darker if it wanted to. Like the show is surprisingly darker than it seems, specially for a kid show, but it has the potential of the war and other aspects to be more messed up than it alreadt was (like in one of the first episodes of S1, we literally see the skeleton of Aang's closest friend surrounded by firebenders, meaning he most likely murdered all of them by the time he died).
Imagine Katara using waterbending to freeze the water in your body, that's dark shit
@@rasielcruz6168 Or Aang suffocating you by pulling the air out of your lungs.
@@admin.slayerenryu its not the fact that the writers weren't dark enough. Its the fact that Nickelodeon stopped most attempts by the creators to add even darker themes to the show and instead had to imply certain things. If Martin was a head writer he still wouldn't be allowed to go as dark as he wanted because Nickelodeon controlled what could be in a episode and what couldn't
Fun fact: When Katara exploded the water attack from Hama with her hand, she was using a earthbending stance by standing her ground and facing it head on.
Just like what Aang told Katara when he was having trouble with Earthbending..
"To master Earthbending You got to stand your ground like a rock and face things head on.." or something along those lines....
I love how all the characters learn from each other! !
Makes sense to catch her off guard since they both had similar waterbending techniques.
right, that's why she was so shocked how she blocked it. then the next attack she also does an earthbending like attack to attack hama from above and below at the same time which spun her out which was lit too.
I just noticed it wow that’s super dope
It's not an earth bending technique, it's utilizing the form. It's not earth bending. Dont go down that hole.
Dude, the reason why she cried is because they are still literally kids and bloodbending is a scary shit.
I haven't watched their reaction yet but did they really get mad at Katara crying at the end?
"Enforcing your will over others" .. i don't think Katara would like such shit lol.
Nothing to do with them being kids. That's like torturing someone. In their world, you can bend almost anything and you have full control of your body. The fact that you can force people to do stuff, that's like saying "brainwashing" is ok. Basically the means are justified by the end result. So in a war, you can torture people, brainwash them, etc. We all know in our world, that just won't fly.
SaviorOfNirn only toph and aang(kinda) are children. The other two are teenagers, so I don’t know why people view teenagers as children/kids when they’re clearly different from each other.
@@k.d3983 Dude where on earth are 14-16 year olds not kids lmao.
Its sad, but i love the way in Hama's backstory, after she escaped. she could barely walk. Due to the lack of use of her legs and confinement. Her anger is understandable and sadly similar to real life.

One of the reasons Katara is my favorite isn't because she's an impressive bender, but because of her will to fight, and while her pride and will are also her greatest flaws, it's what makes her feel like a real character.
To me that's the sign of good character writing where your greatest strengths are also your greatest weaknesses, bc that is something i find is also true in life, and to have a character reflect that makes them that much more real to me
Kataras Character: Im a Healer but “cocks gun”
@@666melodeath666 LOL Katara's the Cleric.
But she is a great bender though especially in season 3.
@@mariosmatzoros3553 oh I'm saying even though she is, it's not the reason she's my favorite.
For a one time antagonist, Hama was a pretty fantastic character. As we saw, she wasn't always this way, but because of war and how the Fire Nation treated her and her fellow tribesmen, she was warped into this person. It's pretty sad to see honestly, how someone could turn so resentful that they start to do onto others what was done to them. Hama was basically Jet but worse and to the point of no return.
And despite Hama being locked away again, she still essentially won in the end. She laid out her terms, which was to bring another bloodbender into the world, and she succeeded. That's why Katara cried in the end. She not only fulfilled Hama's twisted wish, but because waterbending is a part of her, this "evil" technique is now a part of her. She was forced to learn a technique that she never wanted to learn and can never unlearn now. To say the least, it's pretty traumatizing. It's also why I've always saw this episode as a loss of innocence, because it's like Katara was tainted because of what she had to do. Such a dark episode!
And bloodbending is only OP for Katara if there's a full moon and she's willing to actually use that technique (seeing as she seems to hate what it represents).
It’s so fucked up what happened to her. Imprisoned and suffered for decades. I totally understand why she snapped.
She is NOT an antagonist and neither is JET they just had horrible experiences with the fire nation and wanted revenge that doesnt make them antagonist
@@MikeGanja420 You do know what "antagonist" means right?
I guess with most people it does take one nasty day to make them go nutsy ko ko. I’m looking at you, Joker!

Katara's story was about her mother
Roshi was talking about hama and the group assumed that Hama might have fit the story. The woman onscreen when Hama was abducted was definitely Katara's Gran-Gran, tho. Hama is just not the girl from the NiNi story.
Favorite fan theory: Hama's escape is why the fire nation went back to the South pole looking for a water bender. Her escape was a motivator for why Katara's and Sokkas's mom died.

Avatar lore is fucking crazy cause there is a reason for everything that happened

@@90sflower95 You're actually right but wrong at the same time. I never said that the mentality and environments were not factors of them becoming like this. Here's the thing--once you learn bloodbending, you can't unlearn it. So you're constantly feeling and treating people, actual humans, as bodies of water. Katara never wanted this power because it's shown that Bloodbending is inherently evil--that those who have used it were messed up. That is not what Katara aims to be. Also, hypothetically, if Katara used Bloodbending during the war, their side would have been in a hypocritical state because the fire nation tortured their prisoners. They were fighting against them for a noble cause...why would they stoop down to their level? There's a reason why she outlawed it...And also Bloodbending was a part of Amon and Tarrlok's environment, so you're wrong there too.

I don't think Aang would ever want to learn blood bending, no matter the circumstance...
@@Ayocartoonclips he learns to counter it, not use it
@@Ayocartoonclips Aang never uses blood bending. He uses his power to resist it.
And he bends people's energy to give them/take away their bending ability
i mean to be fair, you can do some scary shit with Air bending as well
@@GraveDigger35 yeah. You could... Aang wouldn't either
Technically a lot of fucked up shit could be done with bending. If the benders ever reach a certain level of mastery, earth benders could literally just instakill everyone by making the ground eat them, water benders could rip out all the moisture from a number of people just like what Katara was doing to the flowers, fire benders could manipulate the body heat of people and make them die of hypothermia or make them spontaneously combust, air benders could suck the air out of people's lungs or make those lungs explode.
The reason Katara cried is because blood bending changes you, it corrupts you on the inside. You get hungrier and hungrier for more power the more you use it. Hama even says "I've never felt more alive" and stands taller and looks happier because it's like getting a fix, it's that addictive. In a way, this took Katara's innocence away... It activated a darkness within her that would always be there, waiting to be triggered
Legend of Korra further proves it
And that never happened with katara as far as we know she never used it again after the southern Raiders
@@HisMajestyTheQween legend of korra ruined it, he didn't even need the full moon or to do any hand gestures. Korra pissed all over the cannon
wachotraefernet no it didn’t it cleverly fit the cannon with new information that still makes sense for example the context of blood bending is you need the full moon because it makes you stronger so theoretically a strong enough bender can do it without one
@@wachotraefernet it really didnt. the full moon rule wasnt some magical thing, bending is just strongest during a full moon thats it. yakone and his kids are the only characters to utilize it and the technique died with them. Bloodbending is still heavily protected in the series. the full moon thing is really not a big deal, and its not crazy that a character practicing every full moon in the arctic would eventually surpass a character like hama, who had to learn how to use the technique in a cell away from any water filled environment. In fact, korra handles blood bending better, because they didnt learn those techniques with no training like katara did.
"It's a war!" Yeah... justifying Bloodbending is kinda hard. Think of it like Mustard Gas, just because 'it's a war' doesn't mean you should do that stuff. I think the show runners knew this, which is why Bloodbending is always accompanied by sick noises and painful movements.
Not to mention that Katara is still a teenager. I would like to add that this is more than just war. Katara is on the good side. If she starts to use that, then they start to lose the battle of morals and ethics.
btrando1 I believe Moral and Ethics should be reserved for Peace times, War is about achieving victory, not achieving the higher moral ground.
@@Suyai- It's how you win that also matters. Let's say for example that in a alternate world that Katara went down this path. Will Aang condone it?
Exactly, the person subjected to Bloodbending has to be in immeasurable pain because their mucles and veins are resisting what the bender is doing to them. So technically the victim could end up ripping something or rupturing an organ just trying to stay alive. Basically bending is a perfectly deadly tool, especially water bending, now Hama is trying to turn it into a war crime.
Especially since Hama was doing it on civilians, innocent people that have nothing to do with the war.
Hama's flashback reveals that the Fire Nation ship that Aang and Katara ventured onto in "The Boy in the Iceberg" was uprooted by the Southern waterbenders.
When Toph suggests that the Moon Spirit could be to blame for the disappearances, Sokka becomes rather upset and proclaims that the Moon Spirit is a "gentle, loving lady [who] rules the sky with compassion and ... lunar goodness!" This is a reference to Princess Yue, his former girlfriend who sacrificed herself to save and become the Moon Spirit.
When Hama and Katara are in the field of fire lilies, Katara mentions meeting Huu from the Foggy Swamp Tribe when Hama talks of plantbending.
Katara referenced to the events from "The Desert" by saying, "When we were stranded in the desert, I felt like there was almost nothing I could do."
When discussing ways to control water wherever it exists, Katara tells Hama, "I've even used my own sweat for waterbending." This calls back to the previous episode, "The Runaway", where Katara uses her sweat to break Toph and herself out of jail.
Aang is disgusted when Hama mentions stewed sea prunes. This is a reference to "Bato of the Water Tribe", in which he tried stewed sea prunes and hated them.
Also, Hama was actually mentioned all the way back in season 1! During their time in the northern tribe, Katara met one of her grandmother’s friends, who mentions both Katara’s Gran Gran, and Hama!
Courage Wilkerson I don't think they mentioned Hama in that episode. She mentioned Kanna leaving the Northern tribe, but that's it. And besides, I think Hama is born and raised in the Southern Tribe because she knows how to waterbend in the Southern Style or at least grew up learning Southern style bending. Because in this episode she said that she will teach Katara about the Southern tradition.
Kanna did mention Hama in the movie that shall not be named though, but other than that there isnt much explicit connection between the two. But the girl Hama was laughing with in her backstory was Kanna, so there is that. But it wasnt explicitly said too. It was only said in an art book for ATLA and not the show itself
I don't know if that's confirmed but Hama seems to be the reason why they didn't take any prisoners anymore
When they took katara's mother
There's also a fan theory that Katara's mom's death was indirectly caused by Hama.
Hama was supposed to be the last water bender in the south pole before she was abducted by the raids. Hama escaping prison (by herself) meant there was then a single southern water bender roaming free, and a dangerous one at that. During that same time, water bending was forbidden by the southern tribe in fear of Fire Nation Raids. The south pole wasn't even actively patrolled by Fire Nation soldiers. This means the only reason the Fire Nation had to raid the South Pole once more, this time during Katara's childhood, was because Hama, a dangerous water bender, was on the loose and it made sense to the Fire Nation that she'd try escaping back to the South.
The only problem is that Hama never returned to the south pole. The Fire Nation soldiers would not find a water bender in the South Pole because the Southern tribe didn't have any known water benders among them. They were all at a deadlock. That's why Katara's mom volunteered herself to be taken as a prisoner.
But the Fire Nation was no longer taking prisoners. Why? Because of Hama. Because of her newfound blood-bending ability, she showed that keeping any and all sources of water away from water benders was not enough to keep them subdued, that being in a room with a water bender could put them into trouble. Hama's escape may have even encouraged the Fire Nation to exterminate all of their water-bending prisoners and to kill any and all other water-benders from then on. The Southern Water Tribe, who have only known the raiders to abduct water-benders, however, would not have known any of this.
So to summarize everything: Hama's capture --> no more water benders in the South Pole --> Hama learning blood bending --> Hama escaping years later by herself --> one last Southern Water Bender on the loose --> Fire Nation possibly changing their policies on dealing with water benders --> killing all water-bending prisoners --> Fire Nation returning to the South Pole to try to recapture Hama.
But Hama not returning south --> No water benders in the south to be recaptured --> A deadlock --> Katara's mom lying about being the last water bender and volunteering herself to be imprisoned to protect everyone --> Southern Raider general killing Katara's mom.

When connecting the Puppetmaster episode to the Southern Raiders episode, I feel like Hama was supposed to represent a possible future for Katara, or what kind of person Katara could potentially develop into if she wound up fully giving into her bitterness and rage from losing her mother to the Fire Nation.
Bloodbending breaks the virtue of free will, I think.
But didn't the fire nation murder and capture people against their will? As long as you use it for good it's a dope power to have
@@CoutureThug Even fire benders murder civilians also you literally cant use it for good imprisonment sucks but its way better than having ur body functions taken away from you
@@CoutureThug you can’t use it for good if the power itself is inherently evil. Taking away someone’s free will? robbing them of the use of their body? Practically imprison them in their own minds while they’re forced to watch as someone else takes over and *uses* their body? There’s no way to use that for “good.”
Well that, but also the implications of what it’s fully capable of. This show is meant to be a bit kid friendly, but if it was something like AoT, using blood to break your victims bones, crack necks or folding their body the way it shouldn’t be, sucking their blood out or internally combusting them would be something they would definitely do. So not really a matter of free will but of all the horrible things you can do to someone.
The reason for Katara feeling uncomfortable is way more straight forward than you guys are thinking.
She was taught that waterbending is healing and life. The extent that the old lady (don't know how to spell her name, maybe Hama) was taking it was repurposing it for destruction and death, Katara didn't like how she could kill a field of flowers, and dominate the body of others in what looks like a very painful way.
Fun fact: The voice actress for Hama is Tress MacNeille whose done many roles throughout different cartoons with her most well known ones being Mom from Futurama, Charlotte Pickles from Rugrats, Arnold's grandma from Hey Arnold and Dot from Animanics.
Oh, no wonder she sounded familiar.
So that's why I though she was going slap someone.
Tress Rocked
I KNEW SHE SOUNDED FAMILIAR BRUH
Wow, she was Dot? Man, Animaniacs was a while ago...
I'm with Lupa, it's just too messed up and if I ever had to use it, I'd feel as bad as I would if I'd had to kill someone. Katara's compassionate and would cry about that too.
I know I’m late but I think that’s the point of it. Bloodbending by principle is the EXACT SAME as rape. It’s about control and domination and disregarding someone else’s personhood. Given the network of course they weren’t gonna be so obvious with handling a theme like this so bloodbending makes sense in the work and acknowledges an unspoken side to the war.
@Shanika Blood bending innocent people is wrong, but given the time period they're in where at any moment you could be surrounded by Fire Nation soldiers blood bending is a good tool to have. Yes, it takes away bodily autonomy, but some people deserve it. You can't seriously tell me a tyrant like Ozai who planned on exterminating the entire Earth Kingdom doesn't deserve to get blood bent. Also, for defensive purposes. If you get jumped by 20 fire benders I'm pretty sure you'd use blood bending on them. It's a guaranteed win and the ability doesn't have to be painful. You can control people and simply restrain them painlessly or make them pass out.
@@controlman7490 That may be, but once the war was over, then what? Once someone who has lost all hope gains power, it's very hard for them to let it go. Hama is a good example of this. Her initial reasons for creating the technique may have been justified since she was a prisoner of war, and had to use the resources available to her to escape. Once she did however, Hama chose to use it on innocent people rather than let it go. When you have the power to control others, would you really be able to give it up? When does it stop? This is what Katara no doubt realized and why she would eventually work to see blood bending outlawed.
@@ThoraxetheImpaile100 Yes, most people would be able to give it up because we're not absolutely demented like Hama. Besides, it was decades of years of abuse that turned Hama into the monster she was. Someone who hasn't experienced that trauma and just learns blood bending like Katara would most likely be completely normal. I know for myself I'd only use the technique on people who are clear threats to me or my loved ones. I'm not gonna be some psycho kidnapping people and holding them in a dungeon. Blood bending should solely be used for good.
Me during this whole episode “THEY’RE NOT EVEN READY!”
It just hit me how short a hundred years actually is. Like, during that flashback of everything changing? There were people in the village who still remember Avatar Roku.
Realistically, depends on your age
And ppl in this world live well over 100 so what really is 100 years loo
fun fact: Hama at the second hand said "My work here is done" which means, even if she's lock up, her tradition of using blood bending was passed to another Generation, which is katara.
We still gotta remember despite everything that's happened with them throughout the series, war and all, Katara is a motherly caring character, but also she's 14.
If some creepy old lady tried to make me, a 14 year old, learn how to control the blood in people's bodies, I'd be weirded out and hesitant too
It's not a good power to have. Bloodbending is the type of shit that would be banned in wars (like atomic bombs, weaponized gas, bio warfare, etc in our world). Learning this type of bending is a curse, and Katara noticed that. In the end, the puppetmaster won.
"It's not a good power to have" can literally defeat any opponent in mere seconds💀.
@@controlman7490 so can nerve gas. Yet for some reason its literally illegal everywhere. Ask yourself why.
@@mollywopper22 Not the same. Nerve gas inevitably causes extreme pain to the victim while blood bending does not. Whether a blood-bending victim experiences pain is totally up to the blood-bender. Hama managed to control Aang and Sokka and cause no pain, which she intentionally did. If I'm a blood bender I can force my opponent to safely tie themselves up and I've just defeated them without causing pain or death. Blood-bending is probably one of the most humane ways to subdue an opponent.
@@controlman7490 if we go even somewhat scientific it would probably cause excruciating pain because it is literally some forcibly moving your body in unnatural ways it would be like your bones are breaking themselves
Also if you remember back to episode 2 Season one when the find Monk Gyatso body surrounded by all the fire nation bodies it’s implied he pulled the air out of all their lungs. So yeah there are advanced techniques from each element
I've watched this show meny years ago but y'all reaction makes it brand new
With the blood bending thing it’s more based on the person then the actual technique itself. Because the technique itself is cold and it’s really useful, but looking at the person as in Katara who is trying to conserve that “life is precious, love for all” type of view on life (even with a war going on) the action of basically reaching into somebody and controlling them isn’t aligning with her.
She does use it though later and not full of love but she was full of rage too
To katara it’s almost like rape in a way while for Hama it’s a way for justice and revenge
ANDREW MAHABIR Yeah she used it on her mother’s killer. Her mother’s death is the reason she’s all “live is precious”, but that obviously wouldn’t matter against her mother’s killer
"The rats that scurried across the floor of my cage were nothing more than skins filled with liquids" deep yet terrifying words
The picture they were trying to paint was power... at what cost. It's like knowing how to fight and knowing how to kill. Being able to knock hoes out is one thing, but crossing that line and killing someone.. that's a different story.
Watching Katara cry at the end always makes me cry, too. Whether it was reasonable of her to refuse learning to bloodbend or not, she was so clearly violated and forced to do something against her morals. It's horrible.
agreed. you could be raised to be the kindest, compassionate, most selfless waterbender, and yet bloodbending only once could totally corrupt you and take a toll on your mental well-being. psychologically mess you up, and warp your old personality into a cruel and sadistic one. notice how bloodbending is like how serial killers came to be. torture animals long enough and actually enjoying it, you're bound to feel the same way when you're doing it to other humans. the same thing applies to the unfortunate childhoods of Tarrlok and his brother Noatak.
when i was younger bloodbending shook me to the core
When I first saw this episode in middle school, I had nightmares!
Me too, bloodbending really terrifying
Just finished watching the debate, thanks for the cool down.
Same lol
What a mess right. Both are clowns
Same, this is a nice break from that mess
Exactly. I just really wanted one of them squaring up, two old men swaying, "come er whippersnapper I'll pop you."
Chris Wallace made me laugh though. I thought he was going to send Trump to time out.
yooo same lmfao
When Katara remarks that Hama reminded her of her grandmother, she is holding a cabbage shaped like Kanna's face.
This is considered to be one of the darkest episodes in the series, as this was a Halloween special released in October 2007. It has many of the conventional elements of a horror film.
This episode called into question whether the Avatar receives a boost to his/her power from the full moon like 'normal' waterbenders, and by extension firebenders with the comet, as Aang could not break free from Hama's bloodbending while Katara could.
Although Katara uses bloodbending in a later episode, this is the only time the technique is actually mentioned in the series.
This is the second and final time that Toph is seen blushing.
In Hama's flashback, one of the villagers surrounding Kanna is similar in appearance to Toph, while another young boy has a warrior's wolf tail hairstyle like Sokka's. Kanna herself is sporting hair loopies like Katara.
This is the only episode in Book Three that references episodes from Book One in the "Previously on Avatar ..." section.
This is the fifth episode that does not appear in a "Previously on Avatar.." recap. The others are "The Great Divide", "The Fortuneteller", "The Northern Air Temple", and "The Painted Lady".
This episode was included in the digital compilation NickToons Spooky Halloween on iTunes from 2009.
Aang does not bend any element in this episode.
Thank u
Doesn’t Toph blush when she says she wants to go on a field trip with Zuko?
false, toph blushes when suki saves her from the serpents pass, sokkas master episode and this episode
I was about to tell you not to spoil, but then I remembered they finished the show on Patreon
Tazer391 how is that false I said this was the last time she blushes and that blush when suki saves her already happened proving me right this is the LAST a time she blushes
If it wasn’t for Hama learning blood bending, katara’s mom would been alive. The fire nation started killing off waterbender’s once they realize water benders could blood bend. Even if it was a southern water tribe tradition.
oooh shit. thats insane. i never think of that. Hama hurt Katara in more ways than one
Johan S yea it really sucks.
Thats not cannon...
And its not hama's fault she tried to survive
alain true not cannon but it’s the only logical explanation to why the fire nation started killing off water benders. The fire nation didn’t kill off earth benders because they really weren’t a threat except for toph because of her metal bending.
"it's a war" boy those two would send nukes day 1 in a war wouldn't they? Lol
😂
Easy win lol
Well they’re taking about a 100 year war in which their side has a very unlikely chance of winning.
about katara crying at the end i think its not just about the fucked up nature of blood bending but also the fact that she finally met another waterbender from her tribe who was willing to teach her and then ended up being a crazy old lady kidnaping people like i feel bad
Me: "Well, debates are over... I need to unwind. What can I do to rela-"
YaBoyRoshi: THE PUPPETMASTER
Me: "THIS IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF RELAXING BUT I AM NOT COMPLAINING."
I just love Lupas "BURF" sound effect.
AIYY
Their reactions when Toph metalbends the key, I can’t. 😂
14:36 - not sure if anyone said this yet, but some of those moves that Katara used was based on earthbending technique. Like a call back to what Iroh said about drawing wisdom from other nations to make each other stronger.
16:03 - Ha, speaking of which... How far are y'all in Korra? Cause I know there was a edit referencing season 3 a while back.
They’re in season 4 episode 9
Zayd Kazi wait so they are basically almost done with korra in real time?
decoy_bait yes
Hama: "it's impossible to fight your way out"
Katara: **Bet**
Katara got some straight asspulls like no-one else lol
GokuInfintysaiyan I mean she never used it against another water Bender so she just assumed she couldn't
@@nnightkingj Its not that simple. Hama took YEARS to learn how to do it. Katara learned it in seconds. It has its own unique form and everything. That is ludicrous no matter how you slice it
@@GokuInfintysaiyan I see where you're coming from but Hama is over 80 years old, that definitely has a toll on how powerful she is. Plus, I like to think Hama let her escape her grip so Katara could learn bloodbending. A comment somewhere here mentions it, I think Hama let Katara beat her, then put here in a position where she would be forced to use blood bending.
QueenSahara Ice
Hama was mortified at Katara’s power and lucked out, you can tell by her expressions! Even if she did plan it... Katara learned it IN SECONDS. She copied 1 FORM and somehow she learned the whole style? That’s pillar man levels of stupid right there (learning a whole ass language in just a couple sentences)
when yaboyroshi uploads
Me: *cLIcK*
Bro this episode was on some Scooby Doo Witch movie levels. Anyone else remember how freaky that movie was? Dude summoned a whole spirit and got dragged back into whatever hell she came from.
Bloodbending is scary cuz its basically someone else forcing their own will onto someone else. The puppet having no control whatsoever, their willpower rending useless and can be forced to do anything the master willed them to do.
"I've never felt more alive!"
The chills! xD
Bloodbending is the most dangerous bending and no one can change my mind. Like lightning bending is the shit but bloodbending takes the win, like nothing can top it
Just started binging your Avatar reactions, thank goodness y'all uploaded!!
I'd say reaching into somebody and forcibly controlling their body is a very dark kind of power. The kind that, once you've done it, you don't just forget it. Your conscience forever knows that you've crossed that line.
When Katara cried at the end, so did I. The finale is such a gut punch.
18:31 they said it was too dark but in legend of Korra they had Zaheer using airbending to literally suck the air out of the earth Queen which of course killed her 😂😂😂
YESSSSSSS literally r]the only thing keeping me alive is your guys’ reactions
Can relate.
That's.....Really bad...😓😓😓
@Nio37 Do you mean me?
Nio37 N O ...
@@river8834 whats on your mind buddy
The other fucked up thing is that Hama wasn't really fighting a war. She wasn't some guerilla fighter taking out fire nation soldiers. She was camped out in a village torturing her neighbors.
The superpowers of each element:
Fire - Lightning
Earth - Metal
Air - [SPOILERS]
Water - Full body control
Yea I think we all know whats the scariest element out there
Air : flying and the [spoiler]
Fire : lightning and [Spoiler]
Earth - lava
Fire - Dance
Water - purify spirits
Air - breath taking
It’s not a spoiler, they’ve watched season 3 of LoK
What's the spoiler for air? Haven't seen avatar in a while
@@voninja8684 entering the void...
15:22 the fact that she says sorry to Aang but not Sokka. She cares about her man more then her brother 😭😭💀🤣
IVE BEEN WAITING GOR THIS!
Also don't forget that blood bending could be done only during the full moon, cause many people forget that.
The other dark thing about blood bending is that it could make people mad with power, just like Katara said "To reach deep inside someone to control them". Blood bending is not only the dark side of water bending, it could also be the bright side if used in medicine, imagine just how easy it is to stop bleeding. All in all, it's the user that matters.
Been waiting for y'all to get farther into this season especially in the double digit episodes
Btw a fun fact about the raids. The reason they raided is because if they assumed the airbending avatar was dead, the next avatar would be water. Seeing they dont have a chance against the north they went for the south taking every bender in hopes they were an avatar
3:31 He gave him that “you a grown ass man” look 😂
Blood bending is the classic “the end justifies the means” debate. It’s also a slippery slope that can potentially lead to rationalizing all kinds of horrific acts.
the whole air nomad, southern water benders, metal benders, & sokka at one table 😂😂
Thinking about this today: the White Lotus considered bringing Hama in, but Pakku (b/c chauvinism) and Jeong Jeong (b/c of her rage toward fire benders -- and it doesn't help that JJ and Iroh were both in the FN military) decided against having her join up. Thus, this OP woman is holed up here: taunting innocent civilians.
I like to think Hama just "played the villain" and let herself lose so she could pass the skill. She had the skill for years (in a land of so many guinea pigs). I think Hama taking control of Aang and Sokka was so Katara would experience the feelings necessary to learn the skill. I think Hama's goal was for the skill itself to survive because her generation of benders got wiped out. It could've made Katara sick to her stomach or disgusted with herself that she never uses it and that would be enough so long as someone knows how to use the skill. Lock it away in a forbidden book or whatever so long as it's not FORGOTTEN or lost to time.
Think about it. She may not be a water bending master (like Pakku), but she had ~60 years to master blood bending. In that time you would think she would learn to bend herself (her own blood) to defend against other water benders (or any other blood bending trick). And just like you guys said, blood bending is just so against Katara's nature. It would be like Aang using earth bending to beat Toph when she was training him.
Hama: Blood bending!
Sheera: That's a problem...
YaBoyRoshi: That's Dope!
Lupasan: That's Fucked Up!
Three opinions and all correct!
I’m surprised you guys didn’t mentioned how “bloodbending” is a surprisingly dark concept for Nickelodeon to allowed on their channel.
I would’ve thought there would be a ton of “this is not a kids show !”
Good thing they aren't Disney
Honestly, if you want to see some blood bending outside of the body, you guys should react to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood! It happens literally in the first episode lol. Great video btw !! I honestly love how you guys piece the stuff together so quickly !!
And this is the episode where everyone realized how scary waterbending can really be
Hama is the reason Katara and Sokka's mother was killed. Before Hama escaped, they were still taking water-benders hostages. What changed? Hama didn't kill those guards, they saw what she did, they knew what she was doing, they realized that it was dangerous to leave water-benders alive, that her knowledge could get out to the world. They checked the first place Hama would've went back to after her escape (probably after scouring the coasts, rivers, ports, harbors, military bases, maybe even the colonies, etc.) the Southern Tribe. The raiding party leader never said they were looking for a child. He just believed it was Kya. He knew they were looking for an adult woman. Say there was a bounty put up with an image and general description (water-bender, long dark hair, fair-skinned, dangerous, in her 40's-50's, if you have any info please report it to the military, etc.; but the info on blood-bending was like top-secret cause if that info got out, it'd cause hysteria), Katara being like 4-5 would've been cleared. While Hama was hiding right under the Fire Nation's noses, fear and paranoia within the Fire Nation army lead to them to continue committing genocide.
Bloodbending for Waterbending is like using the Dark Side of the Force for a Jedi.
With blood bending, you can suck out their blood. You can make them internally combust, or you can make them break their own bodies and limbs. Literally folding them the way your body is not suppose to be folding. If this show was something like AoT and not a kids targeted show, they would’ve definitely done that.
I understand why he said it was such a messed up move, in a sense we saw innocence being taken away. She was forced to learn it because if not she’s lose her brother and freaking Aang, the ONLY HOPE to end this war.
Blood bending is essentially rape by the same consequences it has. But at least it’s Katara, she won’t abuse the power. It’s better to have this method than to be helpless again in the future
It may be similar to rape, but it's still not inherently wrong. The same way some evil people deserve to get raped themselves some people deserve to get blood bent. Plus, unlike rape blood bending can actually be used to defend yourself expeditiously. You could neutralize an attacker in seconds.
I read a theory that Hama (the bloodbender) is the reason Kya died. The fire nation was scared of her because of her bloodbending and they wanted to find her. Since she was from the Southern tribe that's where they went looking for her. That's also why they wouldn't take a prisoner and why they didn't doubt it would be Kya.
"lmao i was so loud and so wrong" that's a mood lmao. everyone always thinks hama is somehow linked to the story katara was telling though, don't feel bad!
There's a dark side to all bending...the battle armor suit Aang wore in the last episode is Air nation with a grip for an air sword. PS I wouldn't feel too sad for Hamma. With her skills she probably escaped at the next full moon.
Justifying blood bending is like justifying murder, the way I see it. The only reason to do either is in self-defense, definitely wont go around doing it, "just because you can". Blood bending is like the cruciatus and imperius curse combimbed and there's a reason why they are unforgivable curses. It's immoral.
That's funny you say that because even murder can be justified. Obviously, blood bending an innocent person is evil, but doing it to someone who's actively trying to kill you is not.
@@controlman7490 right which is why i mentioned self-defense, but other than that... won;t do it willy nilly
@@ero442 Yea.
He’s right. It’s an incredibly useful technique and Katara definitely needed it, but that doesn’t mean its not messed up. Opposing your will on another life is messed up no matter how you look at it.
Damn, Lupa looked like he needed someone to hold him throughout this episode. Don't go into a haunted house or watch a scary movie with him.
I had a cool alternate ending during the battle between Hama and Katara. Yue suddenly appears because she is angry that Hama abused the power of the moon to bloodbend innocent people. And since she is the spirit of waterbending, she could possibly nullify Hama's bending for Katara to take her down.
Best episode period. Can't wait to see your reactions once I get home from work, just 2 more hours 🔥
I agree with Lupa. that kinda of power is no different from forcing yourself on another person. It's disturbing and extremely intrusive.
Damn I need these to come out sooner!! I'm basically rewatching with yall and I love it. Feels like I'm watching with my buds cause I have so many of the same thoughts you guys do!
This was cool to see as you all had different opinions on how to cope with bloodbending. "You have to use it in emergency situations like the Avatar state, its a war" vs "that is so fucking cool" vs "thats a power you shouldnt have, good or evil" nice video!!
14:39 katara using an earthbending move to stop a waterbending attack. Just superb
If you guys were confused why Aang was disgusted at the idea of sea prunes, That's Because in book 1 ep 15 he tasted some sea prunes and spat it out immediately... That's why he warns Toph not to eat it 🤣🤣
To this day, the story Katara tells about her mom's friend is one of the creepiest I've ever heard.
Earth Bending -> Metal Bending -> Lava Bending
Water Bending -> Blood Bending
Fire Bending -> Electric Bending
Air Bending -> Oxigen Bending out of lungs
up late tryna catch the next ATLA upload. glad i waited long enough to see this shit so early.
thanks for delivering, guys!

Wait, I never noticed the Igloos BURNING in the background during Hama's flashback? Um, is that even possible?
Yes, it’s possible.
I'd honestly stay using blood bending especially in real battles and I'll die on that hill, she don't even have to go that far, she can just use it on absolute necessary stuff
