Why would you want your Green Egg at 750° anyway? 750° is only used for a Burn Out. ( Cook The Dirt, Oil, Etc out of it ) You can't Smoke or Cook at that Temp.
I burnt off my gasket accidentally while "burning out" my egg after doing a bunch of greasy long low temp cooks. My neighbour distracted me with beer or two and when I got back to the egg it was glowing on the inside. And I mean glowing- conservatively, it was easily over 1200 degrees in the BGE. Usually, I light the egg with a heat-gun but have gone back to a chimney starter to save time when wanting a hot egg. Thanks for the stack idea! Will definitely incorporate this tool into my routine.
If it's clean and you have good air flow you can keep it around 550. But most of the time 400-450 is about the best you can do. Only danger is when it's really hot 500+ and you close the stack to reduce flames then a few seconds later open the lid.
I use a propane trash burner to lite the Egg. Don't need all that side burner crap. Hold the trash burner on the lump and in less time that this I am well over 600
Okay is it cheating when you start the charcoal with the propane?? Just kidding, great idea if you have both grills. I hate starting chimmey starter with paper. The paper ends up in the food. Please explain more the extra chimney top? Works great.
Just wondering if the high-temperature gasket can take sustained 1200 F. Also, how long will 1200 F last for a given amount of lump charcoal? With a Weber kettle, it takes at least 15 minutes to get up to searing temperature, but the temperatures drops immediately at the point.
Went to Home depot and got to pieces of ducts to create the chimney and it works like a charm. Also works on chimney starter. Put it on and a few minutes later the flames are rolling up.
I appreciate that! Would it be wide to have some lower controlled burns 300 degrees or so for the first few times? ... after seeing this video I wonder what your 'hot as possible' is?
Turning your kamado into a rocket stove. Great way to over bake your ceramic and make them crack quickly. Green egg will be happy as get to sell lots more ceramic I guess lol.
what a friggin awesome idea. I cant believe there isnt ONE other video with this. Kick ass. I assume the air vent on the bottom has to be wide open for air?????
Good video! I just installed a High-Cue fire grate in my BGE that lets more air travel in even faster. I wonder how much of a difference it would make using your method.
Genius! I knew that there was a good reason for that underutilized burner on the side of my Char-Broil.that somebody, somewhere would figure out. Thanx!
This is pretty good, but if you want to see some serious quick-lighting that is without any aftertaste, try some liquid oxygen! Not very much though . . . and stand back.
I’ve never cracked mine doing this, but it prob would if you just left it wide open for 15 minutes . However doing a clean burn with a hair dryer did crack it to bits. Didn’t wait long enough for the ceramic to get to temp.
I tried this with my with my Kamado Joe (Big Joe) and it didn't work... had new lump charcoal and everything and it didn't work. It got to 650º but it took 45 minutes.
i have a big green egg-- love it but the kamado joe is just as good. Why call it junk? You got stock in the company? Seriously, why people become fan boys of corporate products will always amaze me.
Cool idea too ingenious!!! I just use the old electic charcoal starter for 9 minutes then set my shop fan about 5 feet away on low pointed at the draft door and it they are RED HOT in a few minutes!!!!!!!!!
Get a open stainless steel fire grate on amazon and a looftlighter. Move all small used charcoal to bottom of egg. Light top side normal with looftlighter. Shut top and jam looflighter in air hole in bottom. It lights the small stuff and makes pushes hot air into egg. Just watch gauge climb quickly. No need for side burner or hot metal.
I tried your method but had to light the charcoal chimney on the stove in my house....too clumsy trying to run through the house with that thing burning. Leaf blower in the lower inlet works better.
Great idea,..has anyone tried it on top of their gas range in the kitchen if you don't have a gas BBQ side burner. I imagine it would work just the same esp if you have a nice strong gas range like a Viking which I do.
There's a giant spider in your yard, stalking you.
Paul Arbogast An Egg Genius!
Hey you just gave me an idea on why to keep my old stainless steel grill. I was getting ready to put it out on the curb.
I concur with the others. Using the sideburner of gas grill was for chimney starter was ingenious!

Steak Seering... Neapolitan Pizza...
As he points out this is the air temp not the egg temp. As soon as you take off the chimney to heat will normalize to around 400

So I need a different grill to use the other grill faster?
Waiting for your BBQ spider vid........
also... cool trick, the pipe acts like a syphon but with hot air not water... brilliant man !

always burp the egg before opening it. especially at higher temps
I use a propane trash burner to lite the Egg. Don't need all that side burner crap. Hold the trash burner on the lump and in less time that this I am well over 600
do you still have the sku/part number of the 4" pipe?
What's with the German Elektrosound ja?
Nice video man. Love the mod!

I put the extension on top of the egg and it works. Question cost of the propane to light it for 4 minutes.
That big ass spider ;o)
awesome idea. turns it into a rocket stove as desired. Love it!
Your a wizard
Are we just going to ignore the huge spider behind the gas grill!?!?!

Where did you get, or better yet, where could I get the 12" by 4" stove pipe?
Good video! I just installed a High-Cue fire grate in my BGE that lets more air travel in even faster. I wonder how much of a difference it would make using your method.
Genius! I knew that there was a good reason for that underutilized burner on the side of my Char-Broil.that somebody, somewhere would figure out. Thanx!
No kidding! Im doing this next time!!
So the long pipe is the reason to the high temperature going up so fast?
It creates a strong updraft that pulls more air into the bottom. Basically turns your grill into a rocket stove.
nice video good music. ive tried this and ot works
There are blowers that fit into the intake of the BGE; a bit more expensive and slightly slower, but perhaps safer.
This is pretty good, but if you want to see some serious quick-lighting that is without any aftertaste, try some liquid oxygen! Not very much though . . . and stand back.
I'm kind of surprised that you haven't cracked that egg yet
Cracking occurs due to thermal shock. You would have to be cooling it rapidly, not heating. Probably why he said not to do it when cold out.
I’ve never cracked mine doing this, but it prob would if you just left it wide open for 15 minutes . However doing a clean burn with a hair dryer did crack it to bits. Didn’t wait long enough for the ceramic to get to temp.
I used a leaf blower to increase airflow and flames starting shooting out the top lol

Work on my egg... Maybe you should get a real grill and not that off brand joe junk😂😂😭
i have a big green egg-- love it but the kamado joe is just as good. Why call it junk? You got stock in the company? Seriously, why people become fan boys of corporate products will always amaze me.
HeliEnthusiast do you own a vehicle??? Then shit the fuck up, you are part of your so called problem, SMDH
Cool idea too ingenious!!! I just use the old electic charcoal starter for 9 minutes then set my shop fan about 5 feet away on low pointed at the draft door and it they are RED HOT in a few minutes!!!!!!!!!
Lighting the coals with propane is cheating. I would also like to see a side by side without the stack. How much time does it save?
wide or wise, either way! HA!
Pure genius. I'll definitely be doing this.
Science!
ummmmm there's a giant spider in you're yard
Nice video. Makes me for feel simple minded for using a forced draft fan
I just use a BBQ dragon a the intake. Works great and gets up to temp in about the same time.
***** I had a looftlighter until it finally died. I now just stick to using a mapp gas torch, way faster.
Cook steaks as hot as possible.
Wear welding gloves until you learn the conditions that cause it to flash.
what's type of coal are you using there ?
What is the diameter of the stack to use for the mini Egg?
I AM GONNA PRO TYPE THIS BAD BOY,ANY REQUEST LET ME KNOW:)
This is brilliant! I just got an Egg and already have a side burner on my propane grill. Thank you!
You should do a head to head with that Gas Grill over there.
Thanks for doing this in real time.
I plug my heat gun in the intake. I wonder what's faster.
This is fantastic, Thanks for sharing.
LMFAO...
Nice job! You just created a rocket stove. Good luck dude. Nice!
I just won an egg, any advice?
lmao that music
This shows some pretty neat ideas. Thanks for the vid
Is there a reason why you skipped the "stack removal" part in the video?
Really you need someone to show you how to knock it off the top or pick it off with tongs?
I'm assuming the bottom stays closed?
David Anzaldua then where would the oxygen come from?
I tried your method but had to light the charcoal chimney on the stove in my house....too clumsy trying to run through the house with that thing burning.

I have the same app on my phone
+Marty Lynchian What is the name of the App?
Franky Vee I think UltraChron Stopwatch ?
Thnx
just buy a weber
Sorry but a piece of clay from Mexico is not worth $1500.00
That’s one thousand five hundred
Your background music is very annoying.
