Their surname was from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound). Therefore, literally mirror sound, which is technically true as they have the same voice provider, Asami Shimoda. Also, the names Rin and Len are to represent the 'R' and 'L' often found on headphones, which stand for 'Right' and 'Left'.

This was the first video I've ever seen vocaloid in my entire life, I was 7-8 years old and I thought it was Satan singing
Seeing everyone fight over such a trivial thing is really painful. Are they twins or not? THAT is the magic that is Vocaloid! They can be ANYTHING! They're stories!! Their ages, relationships, sexualities, all of it is different depending on the story! Theyre like movie actors or story book characters! So rather than argue what they are, just enjoy each story and each story's own canon, and have fun with it! I can see them as either or when it comes to siblings! If you say that theyre not siblings, then this song can be about how theyre just good friends but they start developing feelings for each other and theyre not sure why! No they were originally mirror images, but your right on the part, they did become whatever people wish, so do most Vocaloids if you think about it.

Rin & Len Kagamine are my favorite Vocaloid ever. There were made to be a duet singer set. First as lover then as twins then it was said they weren't twins nor lovers. In some songs there twins some songs there lovers. Vocaloid is like actors & it just depends on what role there in depends on what they are. Now as to what there really are decided yourself to me there AWSOME!!!

So basically Crypton wanted them to be twins but they flinched (sorry, couldn't find a better word in the dictionary) in front of all the would-be-incest song so they dropped the twins thing.
It's like some manga start at very ecchi, but later gets toned down for general audience. I seriously dislike this because I think it's sacrificing pride for money.
You can see author's true intention in the very begging, and that is why I see Rin and Len as twins.

Why does everyone argue about the Kagamine's realtionship? I mean, they are not related in any way, they're the reflection of each other, Kagami mean mirror, ne means sound, Len is for Left while Rin is for Right, so the correct meaning is Sound that is Reflected, and after sooooo many people arguing about it, Crypton Future Media declared that there was no relationship between them, that anyone could think they were twins, or a couple.
