@1:10 Toyota is not behind in EV. They have admitted that the system is not ready for EVs, and they're correct. That's why they've purposely devoted moat of their resource to the continued development of hybrids. I agree with them

When Roman says, "It needs a lift" that is the most American thing one can say !! LOL I spent my life in libraries before youtube and wikipedia. I often wonder how smart I would be if I had been able to access information from home instead of sleeping in the library overnight.
Two things. I think the Kei car was already a solution for an efficient city car so the idea of buying an expensive electric car as a replacement would have never worked. China's introduction of affordable electric cars might have given them the kick needed to enter the market. Second. I've always wished that the Renegade would be Jeep's answer to the Baby Wrangler. But Stellantis dropped the ball when it compared it to the Fiat. Though I think they cared more about the European market than the US since they're cancelling it for the Fiat Panda. If the Renegade ever comes back in the future, I hope they just take the body, drop it on the Wrangler frame and call it the baby/city Wrangler.
Sorry to break your illusions, but kei cars aren'r really efficient. My mom had a Daihatsu Terios Kid, that thing could sometimes peak at like 12 MPG in winter when doing a lot of highway driving (it's not very aerodynamic). In a not very busy city it's like 25-ish in summer. Big a*s sedans can do better, some crossovers can do the same. Sure, that one was a 2002 model, new kei cars have better fuel economy, but those new kei cars are freakin hybrids.
@@ldmtag I don't think Kei cars are meant for highway driving. Which reminds me, MPGs on electric cars drop on the highway too. Are Kei cars cheaper than a sedan where you are? I'm in the US, so only import cars 25 years old or more.
@@kevilleb it depends. They are definitely cheaper than in the US, and we can legaly import new cars. Right now (just checked auto-ru) a 2019 hybrid AWD Suzuki kei car beats a 2019 AWD Prius at $17-18k vs like $22-25 with similar milage of around 20-25k miles. I would call it a bargain. But also for that Prius money you can buy a same year nice Nissan Serena van, also hybrid and AWD (cos that's the most accurate filter I set to get kei cars in the results). Slightly older and more frequently driven Outlander PHEVs also pop up, which is weird, cos a couple weeks ago they were all close to 30 grand. Back in 2010-2012 or so, when the DTK was bought, is costed probably like $6500, and I believe it was slightly more expensive or about the same as sedans of similar condition, but maybe I'm wrong. For comparison, a 2019 Corolla costs starting about the same as that kei hatchback van thingy, and up to low 20s, kinda close to that Prius. And it's not not AWD, and most of them on sale are not hybrids.

I wish I could go to the big car show. Today I’m going to the Sacramento International Auto Show. I hope Toyota has the new Tacoma. I’ve been wanting a new midsize truck and my heart wants a ranger but my brain wants a Tacoma.
If Mazda can make that rotary engine reliable (it was pretty difficult with the RX-7 and RX-8), they might sell a good number of them...for a sportscar.
