Hi from Italy! After some reviews of top-of-the-range spotting scopes, it is time to write my impressions about an entry-level product: the Nikon Prostaff 3 16-48x60.
It is quite clear from the abbreviation, that it is a small straight terrestrial telescope, consisting of a 60mm diameter objective and an integrated zoom eyepiece that provides magnifications between 16X and 48X. I anticipate that it is a light product and very suitable for traveling use. In addition to the cordura bag, a small tripod with micro video head is already included in the equipment. In short, a mini kit ready for use. It costs 379 euros, here in Italy, and benefits from a ten-year guarantee.

I tried this scope a few years ago. And I was not impressed by the optical performance at the higher magnification.
And I have never been a fan of zooms, because they practically always are inferior to fixed magnification.
The small AFOV at the lowest magnification is a drawback as well.
For this scope a fixed eyepiece and somewhere between 15-30x had been better.
Personally I have Pentax PF 65 ED, as well II and AII. The 1,25 inch hole for astronomical eyepieces is an excellent feature. I use them with Meade 5000 plössl 26mm, and Baader Morpheus 17,5 and 12,5mm eyepieces. These provide 15, 22 and 31x magnification.

Got the predecesor bought 20 years ago, I agree, not a fan of zooms, I always end up using the lower settings, 16x to 25X. After 30X they become just too dark. And mirage is evident. So Ill probably buy a 25X fixed spotting scope next time. Yet the Nikon had is uses, it was light enough to carry on the jungle during birdwatching tours, I always ended being the only one with a scope. Usefull to spot the birds on top of the trees. While everyone else left their heavy scopes at home.
Querido Salimbeni, el hecho que una gran marca como Nikon te lo garantize 10 anni no quiere decir absolutamente nada, é molto facile para ellos de garantizarlo !
Esto no quiere decir que vas a tener una buena vision durante 10 anni, sopratutto con la serie prostaff. Invece de usar el zoom comprate unos buenos 15 o 16x50. Grazzie per la tua rerview, muy buena.
