This gives me the idea that you could surround the actual player in barrier blocks and make a map where the player has to be essentially a spectator controlling another player through a map of some form.

That reminds me of that fake ads for Lord Mobile where you have to command 1000 troops to defeat the other side.
Make 2 players pvp each other and make them have 100 clone in an arena. When the other players hits the other, his clones will hit the enemy clones too

I think you should've made the players look at where you hit marker thing that helps you break stuff lands on, so it's like concentrated on the spot you're looking at.

In minecraft, players are also an entity, but they cannot be summoned or spawned like other entities, but if you change the summonable part in the player.json file to true, typing /summon minecraft:player creates a player, but not as a user, but as a mob. In new versions, this entity skin is invisible but its shadow and name tag still visible
but if you want to summon player entity as user and not mob then you need to use addons like StarBot or FakePlayer but the situation is different for java edition
