  • More on the Ford Duratec automatic accessory belt tensioner, which fails so often - identifying noise, and finding an aftermarket product that's more cost effective (and maybe better quality?!) than the Ford/Motorcraft version.

    Thanks very much much for this video. My Duratec had a crackling sound that gradually got worse over a long time. My garage tried twice to identify it but failed. Thanks to this video, I found it was the tensioner. I’ve replaced it, the idler and the belt by following this guide and the problem is fixed. Thanks very much much, Craig.

    Pretty good, like the ‘listening device’ idea. When look-outs during WW2 were trying to pinpoint an incoming aircraft, they held their hands to their ears to amplify the sound, and it helps make your listening more directional too, for that purpose a good thing. Take care, good job. PS that replacement part, actually seems better than the original. Spring tensioners are all about matching design of the spring etc, to the quality and tension the spring can effect, so there’s absolutely no reason a more compact unit wouldn’t be better. And it’s one of those jobs: ‘while I’m here, and doing £200 worth of labour, I might as well…’ sorta thing. I did a vid on same problem but Renault Clio 2 (year 2000 yes it’s still here), and suspect one will emerge soon on the Clio 4 (2015) my spouse got after that. I did my Passat also, these are one of the parts of a car, that do heavy-duty, almost the entire time the car is in use, if something had a ‘right to fail’ it’s this part. !

    Good video! I have an 11 Escape with the 2.5L engine and have run into this issue as well. It always is at its worse when you first start it with the air con running and in drive or reverse. Once the load dies down from the alternator building the battery back up, it's not as loud. I've replaced it four years ago with a Doorman garbage part and within 2 months it was back. I ordered a Gates brand and hope to change it soon.

    I’ve had 2 cars with the tensioner go rattly, and heard another one with same distinctive noise. They were all very loud at idle.
    Other than the noise they were working fine and just felt dry when working the spring.
    Took them off, drilled a small hole it the back and pumped some spray lithium grease into the spring chamber.
    First one has been fine for about a year. Second one a for a few months.

      I'm not expecting a response but the one you filled with grease did it eliminate the rattle

    I'm already on my 2nd tensioner within a year. First the Duralast one snapped in two after 2-3k miles. I replaced it with Gates (along with the belt and idler pulley) and that lasted 6-7k miles before it recently started making the same noise you demonstrated. I was going to get Motorcraft but from the Amazon reviews, it seems to be just as bad. So I'll keep getting Gates because they at least have lifetime warranty and they continue to work even when noisy. I may need to check for alignment issues. There's got to be a root cause to this problem.

    So just to help me out abit , a misalignment isn’t car breaking , mines booked in to have it changed in a month , is that okay ? ❤️

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  3 года назад

      Depends what you mean by misalignment, if it's bad then you can damage or do accelerated wear to the other pulleys & components on the same belt.

    At least you have a tensioner and you can actually replace the belt easily. I don't know WHY Ford removed the tensioner on 1.2/1.4/1.6 duratec engine. I have a 02 Fiesta 1.4 16v and belt replacement is a total nightmare, because you need special tools that doesn't even work. What an utter stupid and demential design, and I can't even think at the fact that engineers do study years and years to make those stupid choices. And it's the same with the radiator mounting system, absolutely demential!
