TOMMY EMMANUEL - STRUTTING - (essential tommy)- KENDAL 2012
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 мар 2012
- the title says it all but 2 hours of great chat, tips and demos from the king of the guitar
and a great audience with smart questions - well done tommy - once of nicest guys around the guitar world. just getting the intro riff is great.
So many people will comment “amazing, what a brilliant natural talent you have”
No, he’s practiced and practiced for thousands and thousands of hours, that’s made him amazing and able to express himself so well on his instrument and turned him into the master of musicianship that is Tommy Emmanuel
very true - he is always picking the guitar up and working on ideas - you just cann't stop him
Well said
Very true. However, practicing alone will not get you to this level of talent. But I get your sentiment. Sort of.
Great job Tommy.
Jerry Reed mentored countless guitar players who've gone on to carve out great careers, including the unbelievable Tommy Emmanuel. Jerry Reed was an amazingly innovative musician and perhaps the most under-rated guitarist of the last 60 years. He was equally at home singing his songs, acting in motion pictures like Smokey and the Bandit with Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields and burnin' up the neck of his signature Baldwin nylon string acoustic alongside his pals Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Elvis, Bobby Bare, Porter Wagoner, Joan Baez, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson and many others. His Eastbound and Down, co-written with Dick Fuller, is a country classic. Jerry's Breakdown is required study for any aspiring Travis picker and Reed's "Claw" technique has been copied by most of the great fingerstylists.
Had Jerry been a bit more protective of his original compositions, he might have had a few more hit records. But he was content to give a lot of his compositions away to buddies like Chet Atkins, who promptly learned and recorded them. Why would he do that? Because he'd already decided to move on to something new. He was a free spirit and a charismatic original. He lived his life with gusto and, to use a football analogy, left it all out on the field. And he was a picker's picker! And clearly he was a very kind and generous man, a quality that's all-too-lacking in the cutthroat world of show business.
Sadly, Jerry passed on August 31, 2008. Three months later author Matt Blackett wrote a wonderful piece for guitarplayer.com, dated November 30th, 2008, which in addition to Blankett's characterization of Jerry, included tributes written about Jerry by other great guitarists. The following passage, written by Tommy Emmanuel about his mentor, is highly representative of Jerry Reed's genius as a guitarist.
Tommy: "Jerry Reed, in my opinion, is as innovative as anybody in history. When he came along there was nobody like him, and his legacy is the single greatest body of work for fingerstyle guitar players. Nobody comes close to that. Jerry had it all: great melodies, great ideas, and a great innovation in his playing. He always had the right amount of blues and jazz-it was never too much of anything. It was a good balance and his groove was just as infectious as his musical ideas.
I learned so much about songwriting and song construction from him. He also gave me license to be fearless-to jump in, boots and all, and try new ideas. I remember when I learned the song, “Today Is Mine.” I was 17 years old, and that song touched me. It still does and I still sing it on stage.
I would say his biggest contribution to the guitar vocabulary was the irresistible melodies that inspire you so much that you won’t eat or sleep until you learn them. I think the song “Struttin’” is a true stroke of genius.
I remember when I played for Jerry the first time. He was chewing tobacco and he smiled after I finished playing and said, “Son, you didn’t learn that. It was in your ethos. You were born with it.”
Jerry’s message through his music and his words is a loving and sincere message. I found him to be a highly emotional and sensitive person who was a born entertainer. He walked on the stage and changed the whole room. He was full of charisma. He had a great love for mankind that you could see in his eyes. He was a sensitive and sweet guy. Some people think he was just an actor in movies, and some people think he was an okay guitar player and singer. Jerry Reed was deeper than most people imagined. I remember a conversation I had with Chet about Jerry, and Chet said, “Only once in a lifetime does someone come down the river so special.”
That last sentence pretty much says it all, don't you think?
thanks for this comment - so true
Any 2 second run or lick that he plays would take most of us 2 weeks to master....what we dont see is the practise and thousands of hours Tommy has put in over the years....the guy is incredible.
2 weeks ?! dude you are good...
Because he has exceptional musical qualities and talents. you cant really learn to play like him only live in his shoes i guess.
The world is full of great guitarist but tommy seems to up the game as if the guitar will become the next piano in years to come
I highly agree, people often say they can´t achieve this or any level of musicianship because they don´t have the talent to do so and it´s the kind of argument that i really hate because its not true at all. I do believe that there are people that can learn faster, but this level of musicianship is built on intense work and dedication, it may sound like magic but it doesnt mean that is build on that eheheh So the beauty of things it´s that no one can sound exactly like Tommy, Chet and the list goes on ... But one can work hard, practise and achieve better knowledge of expression on any instrument, its progress that never ends and its certainly a journey. In the end you will sound like yourself. But its all about having fun on a neverending journey.
You can say that again.
thank you lord that you would give such talent to men that we could enjoy their music. God bless and keep you safe in your travels Tommy. thanks
I don't look at him as a raw ntalent hes been playing for 50 years and didn't have to work a regular job like I do I get maybe couple hours a night and all weekend but talent to me is a guy like Robert Johnson basically he usedc to make noise on the guitar when local blues men came through son house said after he hadn't seen him in about 4 months when he came back could play nything he copped a lot of stuff from patten, lonnnie Johnson , son house, scrapper, blind boy ect but he took what they did to another level never mind ingenious alternate tuning individualized for a particular song to et the most out of the instrument now that to me is raw talent this guy is good yes but I would be too after 50 years and no day job
A true master guitarist and improviser. Tommy, it is a pleasure to listen to brillance...you make it look so easy.
I have been in awe of how beautifully Tommy plays this wonderful piece since this was posted in 2012. I watch it every now and then and it gets me every time, I cannot get my eyes off the screen. Every note counts and chimes beautifully. I tried playing it even slower, yet it was way too hard for me to play.
thanks for the comm. i ended up with tendonitis trying to play this - a thrill to capture this
I love playing this tune. Its a a drop D tune but but no-way is it typical. Just like Tommy said. I learned it first by listening and a lot of struggling. Didn't get too far. Then Buster B. Jones DVDs came along. He definitely shows you the ropes. Then....you watch Jerry pick it right here on You Tube. Sohnn!!! Hey you pickers' out there... Lets keep this style alive and kickin'!!!! We owe it to Jerry, Chet, Tommy....they still give us a bunch of reason to!
mayflymusic mayflymusic I recently got into fingerpicking with Paul Simon and Jorma kaukonen. Tommy and Chet solidified my love of fingerstyle guitar. When I grow up I really just wanna be like Tommy tbh.
love this tune, Tommy adds so much flavour thats why he can play all day and never get bored. Jerry Reed was so groovy and Tommys a Machine sent back in time from the future
Absolutely. Learn from the past and improve now and into the future. Tommy really is something else tho
Thanks Tommy , keep Chet and Jerry alive by playing their compositions , and like all great traditions adding your own touch and flavor to greatness by a true maestro...
There are a lot of good players of this style around but you can see why Tommy is the man. Not many can quite match the authority that he plays with, it just sounds right. Something I don't understand is no matter how good something is on RUclips, people still dislike it. Even if it's not you're thing surely you'd recognise talent?
Hi.org . M
I attribute it to fat fingers accidentally hitting the down vote button ;).
Jerry Reed was an exceptional guitarist, he thought so outside the box, and he was a great showman..
I met him once just before he went in stage...he was so stoked.
Stunning performance ! So clean and articulate. Amazing !
We are watching true genious! Very rare and unique. A God given gift that only a few are lucky enough to possess. Perfect mixture of rhythm, musicality and dexterity. Truly fun to watch and listen to.
Tommy is a true gentleman and fantastic guitarist, but be real about who the real "genius" was Jerry Reed who came up with songs like this. Tommy doesn't compose much originally, but does a wonderful job of playing others' songs. Jerry Reed spent much less time perfecting his phenomenal licks than many guitarists: he spent a lot of time making movies, t.v. shows, and fishing. He was the truly exceptional one.
+HeavyMental You would be surprised as to how much Tommy actually composes his own material!
"Tommy doesn't compose much originally"..oh dear you're displaying considerable ignorance there. Go and look at his discography. In my opinion one of the greatest instrumental albums of all time: "Only", for example, is totally self composed by Tommy. Songs on other albums like "Lewis and Clark""The Duke"are all time classice too.
His virtuosity (he's a million times better guitar player than Jerry ever was, he's possibly the best all rounder that's ever lived), his showmanship and his keenness to honour greats of the past might hide his own compositional talents but they're there that's for sure.
joseph175 Agreed, Jerry was amazing, but Tommy in my opinion is the best guitar player to walk the earth lol...
"Tommy doesn't compose much originally,..."
Oh Goodness. You must not know anything about Tommy except for a few videos here and there.
Not to mention that he is a scary good player, actually a terrifyingly good player...
Sidney and Herbie thank u so much for sharing this wonderful video that inspires the entire world just to pick up the guitar and start playing, God bless your souls!!!
This song is simply wonderful and uplifting! Tommy's playing is as usual, beyond outstanding.
drinking tee after playing an amazing song, while the audience applause - like a boss
tommy emmanuel, in my eyes a legend..
heard many versions of that song. So far it's the only one that floats that effortless smooth.
Chet atkins version is more precise and smoother with each note being perfection.
Something that blows me away is how there is no gap between him saying “let me play it for you” and him starting the song. It’s like he simply couldn’t wait to get it started❤
The greatest honour is to have Tommy play you song. His interpretations take them to a new level.
This man has got the touch! And the jaw-dropping gut-wrenching virtuosity to boot! It's too much!
as a general purpose musician of 30+ years..I must say..TE really gives the next generation of players something 2 run with..& thats just priceless..I never B4 encountered such a source of inspiration..& a single source mind u...he takes the solo acoustic guitar act 2 realms I didn't even know could exist ! I bet if u took thE 10 best guitarists in the world(self-proclaimed or otherwise) from any/all genera.. they would unanimously agree that Tommy is the better entertainer....bless U Bro Tommy
How... seriously how can this video receive this many downvotes?! What are you guys thinking?! I really don’t get it. It’s a legendary man performing a legendary song, executing it nearly to perfection... what more do you expect. Come on now....
Tommy is a true LEGEND in the history of acoustic guitar..
His unreachable technique, together with a 'supernatural' musical taste and a brilliant personality like that..
He can do whatever he wants, he's THE PERFECT GUITAR-MAN !!!
How to describe Tommy Emmanuel...A great entertainer and a guitarist with amazing finger dexterity to compliment his infinite imagination!
Tommy is THE MASTER of groove.
he also plays guitar lol
his playing is such magic. I can't explain it. I've seen this song played by some of the other world's best and it just doesn't pop like this. I swear Tommy feels the melody and groove ferociously.
Brilliant song. Brilliant performance.
FANTASTIC quality. Thank you for this upload. You're right in there on his fingers... which is great, because I intend on learning this one, one day.
❤you ,chet and jerry all are my guitar heros
Thanks a million for posting this! I especially appreciate the camera angle and continued focus on the fretboard. Obviously a guitar player at the controls rather than someone aspiring to make an artistic statement.
thanks for the comm. im a huge tommy fan and had the pleasure of meeting him several times -
Anyone who doesn't check out Jerry Reed doing this piece with Chet is missing out on something really special. Thanks Tommy!
One of Jerry's greatest tunes....and he had ALOT of them.
DAMN!! I wish I lived in Australia so I could get lessons from this dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!There should be a love button!!
Well, I just listened to that about 74 times and I'm not going to stop.
hi Philip, after 4 years messing about with this song I have finally nailed most of it - never with the tommy magic but enough to keep me happy - I have recently loaded the performance and cut the chat - if you need tab just shout out
Amazing,,,, brilliant!
If I close my eyes I KNOW that is Tommy playing.
1. The Maton sound with whatever strings he uses.
2 His perfect meld of left and right hand.
3. His cleanliness of notes.
4. His signature flourishes.
I've tried to practice this a few times... maybe one day. Fantastic tune!
With Jerry, Lenny B. and Chet all gone....thank God that Tommy is here.
Some deadly chords and transitions made look so simple
Great!!!!
You've got a groove that noone else...!
Fantastic!
Tommy inspires me to try to make it well on strings
T.K Smith brought me here and l listen to this sweet danger harmonies .
Its sunday i'm love ,my wife was velo cruisin round my town, found a flatbroken guitar on the harborside without home ,and brought it back to me .Its a Cort acoustic guitar Earth 70.
I think its a good one . This happens when i was listen to your version of pink panther.enjoing your guitar you used for it.Only 15 minutes later arrived our house with a lost and found.............☆★☆
That opening chord is one that even the great John Knowles admits he can't name.
Just the video I need to learn this song. thanks a million
let me know if you want the tab good luck
sidneyandherbie I do! Please!!
Frank Rena please email guitarvids100@gmail.com and I will send the TAB
sidneyandherbie I would love the tab also if you don't mind. Thanks man!
Eric Townsend hi Eric, please contact me at guitarvids100@gmail.com and I will attach the file
hi daniel, strutting just blows me away, its more than a song/melody - its a guitarists quirky creation that only jerry could come up with - im just so pleased i was allowed to film it and get the left hand stuff or i would have no idea how to try and copy it - suns shining on this side of the pond for a change
Kudos to the cameraman! Good work!
Great camera work! Thanks for showing his fingers playing!
beautiful
brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant and did I mention Brilliant ?? : )
thanks for the com. just an ordinary Sony HDR-XR500 great audio and the zoom is incredible as you will see on the concert later on - im right at the back of the hall, can zoom in and there is no shake.
great ! when you close cam's to see whats going on !! Keep em coming ! Now I just need a finger transplant !
that guitar sounds incredible!
John Campbell
It's not the guitar that sounds good!
His signature Matons do sound very good even without the master behind them.
Well done on the filming, by the way. Good close-ups on the action.
TOMMY, очень клево (оболденно!). Вкуснотень для восприятия ухом и душой. Спасибо, порадовал.
@sydneyandherbie. When us, guitar players, go see our mentors live, we don't care about anything else but the left hand. If someone needs to see what is happening in the right hand then I don't think they have a chance working out on this song. Thanks for this upload man. Excellent piece and great zoom in to get cracking on it!!
TE : I just love him to bits
Nick Pomery ñ
I just saw this man live...best show of my life. All I can say is that he reminds of Tarantino for guitar playing; covers a song, but nothing like the orig
FOokn flawless !! He’s a god!
Спасибо!!!!!!!!!🎼💕🎼🙋🙋
Incredible as usual
Thank YOU sir !!!
Very very good quality.
I'll try again to learn it, so difficult :-( !
This will help.
Cheers from Holland
Thanks for the reply! Excellent recording, excellent!
awesome words of wisdom, i was also lucky enough to get my guitar signed that day to
fantastic
Of course, he's talking about the late great Jerry Reed as he introduces this song he's wonderfully covering.
WOW just WOW
Couldn't even fathom how to begin learning this song... So insanely jealous of this man's talent.
Hi, thanks for share this video, i've recently uploaded a struttin version taken almost note-for-note from this exact version: previously, i compared in detail 7 youtube struttin tommy versions and this one had the most clear audio, left hand view and song performance
All the best /Diego
thanks Diego, always good to get Tommy feedback
diegoruizguitar hh
Diego Ruiz Guitar You Sir are a true guitar slayer! Your version of this song is inspirational!!!
I agree, nice quality. I have a Sanyo HD camera, which produces a great high res video, but it has nothing for the shakes... and it's a small camera, so that makes it worse. I really wish they would have allowed recording when we seen him in Cleveland.
absolutely amazing
Someone dubbed him Lord of the Strings. So very apt, I thought.
good filming man! my favorite version of this song on youtube.
CGP on the 12th fret, so badass
REAL great quality
Good Lord...
As a guitar player I can tell you that's a much more difficult piece to play than Tommy makes it look. Not to mention his groove and rhythm are insane. Tommy gives it more feel, a better feel, than when Jerry played it.
I used to think Tommy was just a show off. . .
This has totally changed my perception of his awesome talent !!
Thanks for the upload !!
Tony from Florida. . . .
I hear comments about Tommy being a showoff. That is so far from the truth. Glad you saw this one. I've met him many times and seen him perform and jam with others. He is an incredibly kind and sharing person. He gives of his talents and time to everyone. His accompaniment skills are excellent. He knows when to let others shine.
@@guitar1950 ...Tommy can blitz anyone on the planet with speed and precision but thats only one side of him and his personality as a great drummer as well...Ive heard people say that he is all show and speed until they hear him play mona lisa with all the subtlety and precision of a medical surgeon...we are blessed to live at the same time as TE perhaps the best player on the planet and who plied his trade for 40 yrs touring not bad going...
so wonderful- greetings from germany
Tommy is doing 4 dates in New Zealand this September 2017 . Get your ticket
before they sell out. He is playing smaller venues so you will be up
close and personal.
What a great player!!
I love that little bit in the bass at 1:43
Very informativ, thanks a lot.
The only god involved in guitar playing like this is, Tommy Emmanuel himself.
There is no such thing as a "god given gift".
If there was, the instant Tommy picked up a guitar for the first time as a child, he would have played just like he does here.
He practices every single day and he understands to the nth degree, every aspect of the guitar and its fretboard.
There is nothing about his guitar that he doesn't know. It is an extension not only of his body but his mind as well.
Within his hearing he has perfect pitch and knows precisely how much he must tweak a string during the performance of a tune, and until he does tweak that string, he will bend the notes on that string keeping it all in tune unil during the song he has moved the tuning machine head just enough to make its tuning right.
The man is a supreme perfectionist and that's what he been practicing on the guitar, all his life.
It doesn't end there though.
He has a seemingly unbounded love and joy in playing the guitar, and THAT'S what makes him so great.
i have copied this to my facebook page - wise words
sidneyandherbie
Thanks, it's nice of you to say.
It came from the heart.
I think it is important to give true credit to the man, although knowing how religious he is, he would probably agree with the god thing.
Very,very nice !!!
Awesome video, D! Looks like you had a bloody good time!!
There is a live - version from Jerry himself on youtube! Check it out! It was uploaded a few weeks ago!
What a gift!
Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time I hear it, Especially when Jerry is playing it, Tommy does do it Justice though.
have you tried playing it,
Its really fun to learn.
Amazing!!
That is one fine ending!
This gives me happy feet.
At 2:25... get outta town...crazy awesome.
To whoever shot it... NICE CAMERAWORK!! 100% a guitar player haha
ha! thats me Ed. thanks for the comm..... Tommy is simply the best and this song such a great one to try and learn - if you need tabs etc just email me at guitarvids100@gmail.com
I can play this piece quiet well after "just" 1 year konstant hard work...
took you a year to learn that haha I learned 2 Robert Johnson songs over he weekend
MrJbarry007
wow, impressiv. So Struttin should not be a Problem for you within some days. Learn it and post a video.
+Fabian Jenz how the hell do you make your pinky finger stronger?... the beginning is literally hurting my little finger after practicing this only for a few minutes!
Haha,take that,MrJbarry007.
MrJbarry007 what a douche
Meus Deus.
Que Maravilha.
E que difícil...
Obrigado pela partilha.
Met this guy twice at the Wal-Mart I work in. Jesus CHRIST HE'S TALL! Haha very nice as well.
when he goes into that chugga chugga 2:50 just bowls me over good job Tommy
Thats how Tom plays Jerrys the Claw beginning riff.
And kudos to whoever is holding the camera on this one.... amazing footage of the left hand which is the one I want to watch in detail.
thanks Stephen, i used this vid to learn the song - that chord of tommy's gave me RSI in my left hand lol.
@@BurstBelievers I'm learning this one as we speak... that cord and the 7th fret bar give you so many notes of the melody... I showed someone this song today and said it's one of the ugliest grooviest bluesy songs ever. ... I'm using the tommy emmanuel rocks tabs... there's a nice one there which highlights the thumb pick notes in green and is close enough. I adore TE and his songs...
@@stephenkuzmak4501 hi again, i have a good tab for strutting. if you email guitarvids100@gmail.com i will send to you. tommy is one great player and an inspiration to all of us
@@BurstBelievers thanks. will do.
email sent
as good as it gets ^^
I love the embellishments Tommy adds.
Cyrus Baker I know right? Sometimes he can overdo it with certain songs and sometimes he just puts in enough that you know it's him playing like here
after many attempts I am just about getting it together - getting tommy's 'twiddly bits' is one of the hardest tasks
Yup, this isn't my first time here either. The man can make the strings talk!
your comm made me smile, nice one Andy
Cool the channel !!! Subscribed + Like # 1574 !!!! I am pleased to see the new video !!!! Always happy to new friends !!!!
