  • I've wanted to review Klonoa for many years, but I could never find the opportunity. After going through a lot of loss and depression recently, I decided it would be cathartic to review a sad game that I'm very fond of. I also analyze the soundtrack, because of course I do.

Klonoa is really the tragic hero that's called from everyone to help, finds friends, goes trough hardships and tragedies everything in the end always resulting in nothing for him, no moment of respite for our little guy.

I cried at the ending of this game because you can really see that their friendship is genuine even with the fake memories created by Huepow, and Klonoa not belonging to that reality. Even though both of them must accept the harsh reality at the end, the ring will always remind Klonoa that he and Huepow will always be together.

When Klonoa Phantasy Reverie comes out, you seriously need to review Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil after you finish playing it. The entire game has sadness as an important plot line and very relevant right now.

Don't apologize for the sappy sentimentality. It's what made me stick to my screen as you talked about this game and what it meant to you. The care you have for this piece of your childhood really came through. I couldn't tear myself away for a moment.

If you save all the citizens, you start hearing a jingle that progressively continues as you save more and more citizens. It seems like just a nice little song until you realize it's the finale to song of rebirth. It hit me really hard hearing those same notes after klonoa disappears. Almost like a "everything has lead up to this" moment. Truly one of the greatest games I have ever played in my life.

I don’t really think people appreciate how good Klonoa’s character design is. There are many of the “cool guy sonic type” designs in this era. I really think this design is timeless though.

I LOVE and admire Klonoa's design character design and I always have since I first saw the box art for Klonoa's game back as a kid (despite not playing it at the time, procrastination....). His design always stuck in my mind and even when they updated it in Klonoa 2 and the remake for the Wii, it still looked quite nice. And his design has helped inspire me when I created my own little character who I'm still slowly developing today haha.
I seriously am disappointed that poor Klonoa never got a chance to be in Super Smash Bros. His design would fit right in perfectly.

I personally think Klonoa is what might happen if Don Bluth was asked to write a game's story, the guy always had a penchant for breaking hearts. I personally find Klonoa's ending to be bittersweet, yes Klonoa had to leave all the friends he made behind, but then he grows and becomes more mature, rather than being stuck in the past. Its a strong allegory for human growth I feel, we may wish our childhoods could last forever but eventually we have to accept that we will become adults and move on with our lives. I am looking forward to seeing your video on Klonoa 2, as more Klonoa can only ever be a good thing!!!

Y'know, the animation for the cinematic sequences are a lot better in the PS1 version than they are in the Wiimake.
Sad enough that Klonoa gets ripped out of the dream world, being told he'll be in his own world, but it's doubly sad to find out that he never does. He just goes from there into Lunatea...supposedly.
I like Klonoa's language. Just something about the way it sounds. Maybe it's just how Klonoa speaks it. It's like it was engineered to be adorable or something.

What's even more sad is that you think they will reignited in the sequel but from what I remember, they don't though Klonoa does mention Huepow so that was sweet but yeah, just made it all the more sadder that they most likely will never reignite.

  • @matiu97

Personally I prefer Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil over the first one, because I think its story is deeper and has more meaningful message. I played Klonoa Door to Phantomile when I was already something like 20 and I think it is certainly beatiful, but its story is about good dreams vs nightmares and it is somewhat strightforward good vs evil cliche, whereas Klonoa 2 LV's story is deeper, cause it is mostly about sorrow and its place in the world. For sure this isn't an obvious one where we know that sorrow is bad and we need to defeat it. In the end we come to the conclusion that sorrow is an inseparable part of our life etc, no spoilers, and I love it. I also think that Klonoa 2 LV's soundtrack is slightly better, because of course is more advanced, but also has some feelings put into it and every track has its own story in a little better way than the first game imo, though I like the way you interpreted them in the video. Moreover, Lunatea - Klonoa 2 LV's world - is imo better developed, cause every kingdom has its own story too, just like the soundtrack. Though I can't deny Klonoa DTP's ending being very beautiful and the whole story making its own message and feelings, I believe Klonoa DTP was a fine foundation to build some great stories upon it, which can really let this universe bloom. Klonoa 2 LV really did a great job living up to the exceptations after the first Klonoa game and has really reached its full potential, showing a simple, but heart touching story, letting you look at sorrow from a different angle. It is my all time favourite game, I've played it tons of times and I'm lucky enough to still have my copy of the game, being able to play it from time to time, and I must say, every time I play it, I discover something new, a new angle of looking at things, a small detail complementing the story as a whole. It really pains me that Klonoa series never gain as much attention as it should have, even though being greatly reviewed by game critiques. It could be exploited way more, but oh well.
Really recommend playing it for everyone who is at least little interested in Klonoa's franchise, cause in my humble opinion it is the best game of entire Klonoa's series.

Another thing that makes the ending even more tragic is the line from Grandpa as hes dying. "It was a short while...But it was wonderful" it not only shows that despite Grandpa being in on the lie but was still able to love Klonoa like a real grandson, it hits even deeper knowing that what Klonoa thought was his whole life was nothing but a fabrication. I cant imagine how torn and confused poor Klonoa must have been, not even enough time to take it in before hes ripped from the world into the void...

Klonoa as a character is inherently sad. He is like a child facing nightmares and tragedy. Also Namco has forgotten about this character, so he faded into obscurity. Major props for also taking time to highlight the soundtrack; I’ve long been of the opinion that Namco is lucky to have had some of the greatest musicians in the industry on their payroll, past and present, and the OG Klonoa and Klonoa 2 are among their greatest masterpieces (which makes sense, given they’re both ensemble pieces that bring together composers from all corners of the company for a crazily diverse range of sound- even some composers more known for Ridge Racer and Tekken compositions, like Hiroshi Okubo and Tetsukazu Nakanishi, were involved).
It’s also one of the few games aimed at kids I can think of that has a track with the Amen Break in it (Beats from Above, specifically), which I respect. \m/

I suppose for the guy who played along with being Klonoa's grandfather, he was likely just a lonely older man with no one around at that point in his life. He's near the end, and has no one to share his remaining time with. When Klonoa looks to him with love, even reverence, although it was a lie, it meant everything to that man. Somebody cared that he existed. So as he's dying, and Klonoa is shaken at his passing, he can go in peace because of Klonoa, reflecting at how sweet it was to have this child in his life, as short as that time might have been. There was someone who cared he was gone.

This is it. The best video about Klonoa on RUclips. This series has been with me for more than a decade and I am happy someone is able to convey the beauty of this game as it deserves. Even so, I have a nitpick. The only thing that bothered me.
30:57 This is not the leitmotif of the Windmill Song. It's introduced in the opening sequence with the Ring falling in front of the moon. Hence it gets further established as the leitmotif of the Moon Kingdom and theme of Huepow. It doesn't bear any big resemblance to the other motif.

I always got the impression that Klonoa ended with him getting erased from peoples memories as well. As if the final battle was done and they were returned to where they came from. The friends that they made and the memories they shared on that journey were gone. I don't know if that is the case, but that always made me feel that little extra heart-wrench.
There is nothing heavier to me than accomplishing such great feats and being forgotten or forgetting what you've done shortly after the final battle is done. All you've witnessed or felt just swept away.

  • @Cri_Jackal

The sequel makes the ending SEVERAL TIMES SADDER, as it's subtly made clear that Klonoa is incapable of remembering anything he experiences in ANY of the worlds he's summoned to save, he'll make friend after friend after friend after friend after friend, only to be ripped away from each and every single one each and every time he serves his purpose and saves the day, the only way he'd ever be able to stay and hang on to the friends and memories he made there would be to actively refuse to save that world.
He may never be able to remember the pain itself, but I guarantee you, the feeling of that pain will remain etched into his heart forever.

What a beastly video. I love the structuring and complacency you put in this piece, especially towards the end. The story grew very close to me aswell (yes I've read the description), taught me that sometimes good memories of past away friends are the best things we can get. Remember to stay strong and always try to leave a positive impact on the people surrounding you. You never know when your time here is over but you can rest assured, if you did the right things (as with this video) you will live on in fond memories inside your loved ones.
Besides that sentimentality, I really loved the attention to detail you've put inside this video, especially towards the audio.
As a former Game soundtrack designer myself, I felt every single moment you've put in the spotlight about the Music and SFX, which I can't stress enough really make or break the experience. Music isn't everything about a game or in life really but without music, even the best things can be dull, boring and lack of soul.
Thank you very much for this video, where you made me shed a tear for the burdens of the past and smile about things to come!
    Stay safe.

In my humble opinion, both Klonoa games should be re-made and bundled together for the younger audience and the older one to experience. Actually there are many other Klonoa games that should be brought forth. Also, are you going to Review Lunatea's veil soon? People really need to know more about this game Series. I played some of the GBA games and loved the puzzles and platforming.

One thing I appreciate the most of this review is the music analysis. While the ost is hardly overlooked in the fandom, I never hear it dissected in such accurate detail, contextualization, and appreciation. Just such a great retrospective to listen to, I always come back to this video aftercompleting a run of Klonoa

You don't freaking know how much I wanted klonoa to get revenge on the bad guy for killing his grandpa and his home as a kid. I only played the Wii version. I remember sobbing over the end of the game when I was watching the end on RUclips

This is the best review of this game I've ever seen, thank you so much for this content! And it really shows that you really care about this game as much as other fans do.
My first playthrough through this game was at 4 years old, and I didn't even understood the language of the game (I'm not a native English speaker). The voicing, the intonations, the music, they all made me understand emotionally what was going on even without understanding the language (plus visually it was often pretty obvious as well). And boy, did this game still hit me hard in the end. The ending really was a betrayal from Huepow. And his smile in the end kind of broke me. It was one of my first videogames ever. I really think this game was so, so much underrated by the press and normal people overall. It's a masterpiece in emotional storytelling.

I'm Chilean so when i was a kid i didn't knew english, just a few words. I played the game when i was 7~8 and it was in english so i couldn't understand the dialogs.
It really show how good is this game when despite that i couldn't read it i understood the plot of the game, just from the camera angles and the few words i knew at the time, like grandpa. I misunderstood the final and belivied to this day, when youtube for some reason recommended this video, that klonoa whas a phantom and he was revived to complete his task and then returned to the land of the deads.
I remember that after the final i was crying really loud, run to where my father was and cryed while hugging him for minnutes while my father couldn't understand what was going on. Gladd to see this video, as for you this game hold a really special place to me.

The Klonoa series has always been one of my favorites, too. The games are so well made, and you really feel integrated into the world the more you play, like living in a daydream. I love how the makers took care to gradually sink you deep into these stories with the increasingly demanding gameplay, the level design, the soundtrack and voice acting, the characterization. It leaves you breathless.

This has to be one of the best reviews for a game I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve owned this game for years and I’ve yet to give it a chance so I could finish it. A games soundtrack is everything and you’ve shown me that there’s so much more to this game. Great job.

Even with the latest version of Phantasy Reverie, no remake of the first game captures the pure emotion of the grandpa and ending cutscenes. The newer animations lack the surprisingly realistic motions from Klonia and Huepow as they are forced apart, and the switch version has the very jarring stitches of new dialog mixed with the old ones that just sound off, especially the pained cry from grandpas passing.

I remember this being the first game I was given to play as a child and I loved it so much. The music was amazing and I completely fell in love with the characters, and after months of playing I'd finally gotten to the end.
I still remember I was in the house on my own when the final cutscene happened, and I cried so hard.
This game does an amazing beautiful job of breaking your heart but reminding you of all the good times you had before then.
If anyone needs the definition of melancholy it's this game.

A few weeks ago when I was a few hours into my first play through of the game on the ps3, I saw the thumbnail and title of this video, and was like “I mean yeah, this one character dies, but the overall game is still cute and fun.” But then I got to the ending and thought, “Ohhhh, that’s what he was talking about. WHY COULDN’T I HAVE LISTENED EARLIER?” *lays down on bed trying to process the ending while listening to this video*

It's extremely rare for a game to make my cry. I think its quite alot owed to the music of the game being so finely made to depict the emotion they want to create. The ending is pretty unorthodox for its time setting it up to be a nice happy ending then throws a heartbreaker at you. You can sorta tell during Huepows first confession he expected Klonoa to be dismissive meaning he wouldn't have to tell him the rest and it'd sort itself out. It makes it sadder putting yourself in Huepows shoes knowing you can't stay with a person who you've grown attached to and know they've grown attached to you back. Powerful stuff and your video makes it even more powerful, first video of yours I've watched since I saw a game I loved which I'd never seen mentioned before. Great stuff

It's kinda funny how I and others naturally didn't pay very much attention to the sad story at a young age, and now many many years later it has a much deeper impact when playing the game, probably mixed with the nostalgic feeling. Occasionally I still play and enjoy Baladiums Drive a lot, what a masterpiece!

Hey man, you should definitely keep being serious and sentimental. Not seeing some hyperactive git shouting and making stupid jokes is so refreshing. Most people have a deeper connection to old games, and when we were kids we weren’t joking around about the games. We thought they were cool and we made connections with the vibe that we just don’t as adults. This format suits you so well, I made me a bit sad to discover you don’t have a review of Tombi 2. Would love to see that

Don't care what you or anyone else says this video was amazing I love the sentimentality more than forced humor. It shows an inner passion and love for the creation that sometimes humor and jokes cannot get across. The CaddIcarus video conveyed me a very different tone an understanding of this game one that I dismissed as a childish. But seeing it through your eyes and understanding the true implications of it all make me feel melancholy with all of it but deeply enjoying the story. You were able to leave the narrative and such a beautiful manner being the Storyteller for this game that it never had. Thank you very much and hope to see more like this or whatever you produce

  • @OboroHime94
    @OboroHime94 5 лет назад +8

There's just something about hearing someone talk about something that has a lot of meaning to them. And hearing you talk about this magical and beautiful game, it shows how much it touched you.
This game didn't receive the acknowledgement it deserved for being counted as a 'child's game', but your analysis allowed me to see that not everyone thinks like that. A cynical mindset isn't the way to enjoy Klonoa. It's a game that reflects the wistful feeling of a sweet dream, until you can't remember it anymore.
I might be naive about how some things should be or perceive them to be more happy than it really is but it really hurt seeing the ending again after hearing about all of the memories and moments shared by Huepow and Klonoa. Your perspective gave me a chance to reflect on how I originally saw this game too and reminded me what made it special.
I also really enjoyed how you looked into each of the game's stages tracks and lightened up some of the scenes w/ funny quips from your childhood or jokes about the sitar is used for the villains too much. It's not everyday I hear about a 90's video game soundtrack being remembered so fondly.
I think sometimes ppl take games too seriously and try to read into them too much, which takes away the meaning of enjoying yourself. But sometimes I find a review that just resonates with me and know that not everything has to be perfect for it to be good. Even painful stuff is good when you learn from it, and in this story of Klonoa I think it mattered to a lot of kids who took that journey together. Even if it was only a dream...
Thank you for making this analysis vid for Klonoa and sharing it. I enjoyed myself more than I thought! Even though my eyes couldn't stay dry at then end, it was a nice experience. Take care! (^^)/
