I love how, historically, fashion repeats itself as the styles of 1912 are almost exact to styles 100 years earlier in 1812. I've been working on mine and I used a basic regency dress pattern as a base and just adjusted the seamlines and did some finagling with the back closures. The purple outer layer which is like a coat is how I made mine but is attached at one shoulder so I can close the under dress in the back and secure the "coat" layer over like a robe with the sash tying in the back with a bow with long tails.
I was mesmerized by the dress that Kate Winslet (Rose) wore in the film. I would love to wear such a dress in our time! Can you believe that! Imagine in 2013! It’s so lovely. I love the flow it has and it suited Rose well. She looked gorgeous in it. It’s a style that looks like it could pass as a fashion today. I have noticed that some things from that era haven’t changed much up to our present day.
I find it amazing how you also use supplies from that era, too! That’s dedication! One of the 11 Academy Awards the film won was Best Costume Design, which is no surprise! 😊
I saw the movie a few years ago, though I wasn’t born yet when it was released I love the movie, my favorite dresses are the “im flying” dress and “the sinking” a.k.a this dress
@@CarolineElizabethMartin please do the flying dress, if I see someone make it it would make me so happy, because I once did that “i’m flying” scene in school for an event and it was really cool
It's crazy I watch the titanic today and I thought the swimming dress was so cool . i wanted to do it and your the only video to have make it so thank you for this tutorial 👌😍sorry if there is any fault in my sentences,I'm french 😅
I'm only a few minutes in but I have to say, I'm really enjoying your videos! The juxtaposition of the sewing process + contextualizing the dress in the narration is just lovely 💕
This is beautiful you did a wonderful job with the flow of the layers - the fabric choice was spot on and laid flat which is usually a problem with the repro dresses I have seen. Would love to see the back even though you weren’t thrilled with it!
That is so freaking awesome!!! It looks just as beautiful as the one from the movie! Have you ever wore this dress in public and if so what were peoples reactions??💜💜💜💜
Wow, such wonderful work!❤ It's obvious that those dreses from the movie take a lot of work. This video makes it very very visible. Great work, especially shiffon. 👏👏👏
Your pure dedication, eye, skill & talent is admirable. I adore your videos!! Bad the dress turned out so lovely!!! If you do make more it would be wonderful, I love the titanic more than anything :)
Thank you for saying that the museum replicas look different from the movie versions! I'm making this dress currently, and, in searching for references, I thought I was losing it because they looked so noticeably different to me in too-obvious ways. I've been mostly going by movie clips now. lol
I’d love to see ceremonial reproductions of our late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Or even her wedding dress! This project turned out beautifully. You are also very relaxing to watch. Best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤
That’s funny because that’s been a desire of mine since the beginning! It’s just such an intricate piece I feel I don’t have the skill for yet. I also love her coronation gown❤️🇬🇧
🌸🖤🫂✝️ Always felt if Rose was a real person she probably would’ve had a madein of hers hand sew on that passed down lace. I think everyone would’ve been upset but she would’ve loved it clearly! I feel like it’s also how she would’ve learned normal behavior like sewing or something like it. Like house cleaning, I think if the movie want on from that fight with soon to be she probably did more smaller things so she could be teached or learn from sight seeing it done. then doing that away from everyone like cleaning or sewing by hand.
I've been researching the various Edwardian (late and early) corset styles. Boning really began to calm down in the mass produced 1910s corsets and like you mention, smoothed the hips and landed at the upper thigh. My November project will be dedicated to recreating the jump dress 😏. There is no doubt Rose would've worn a corset with the jump dress since it was a dinner dress. So I will be constructing her corset and combinations in preparation for the project, excited!
OMG! That looks absolutely beautiful! I love the swim dress from the film as well, and I got a pattern just for it (Simplicity 8399). Have you tried that pattern? Also I noticed for the original dress, the sash in the back goes up into an inward V shape. Is that a difficult task to complete? I hope to make this dress one day soon! I hope you make more of Rose’s dresses! The Jump Dress is beautiful too!
Thank you! I have examined simplicity 8399, it definitely would need some adjustment to get it to be super similar to the original. Actually the back was really hard for me, that’s why I don’t turn around in the video 😅. I ended up doing a standard closure with hooks and eyes. I plan on doing the jump dress next- a lot of beading lol
@@CarolineElizabethMartin Oh definitely, from the looks of it on the front cover it totally needs adjustments! Especially the fabric. The problem is I can’t sew without a pattern or print to follow. And I want to make the swim dress as authentic and close to the original as possible, like you did! I can still follow the Simplicity pattern and make my own adjustments as I go along, right? Do you sell your dresses? If so I would LOVE to purchase a swim dress from you! You’re so talented!
@@TheGreekPianist yes absolutely, I think if you follow the pattern and make your own adjustments accordingly it would come out amazing! At the moment I do not sell dresses, maybe one day!
I wish they sold it as well! It’s called either the swim dress, sinking dress or water dress because Rose wore it during the scene where the ship is sinking.
Agreed, it was so hard to find the perfect shade lavender silk chiffon that was also affordable. Ordering online and then getting it in person was definitely difficult for color matching. That’s why I added the white underskirt to lighten everything up lol
Looks good, but I think Kate Winslet had a corset on when she wore hers. It laid perfectly on her. But I assume that's bound to happen when you are working for JAMES CAMERON (the bravest pioneer, no budget too steep, no sea too deep, who's that? It's him! JAMES CAMERON.) who is an absolute perfectionist and rich. And can afford to put her in all this shit. JAMES CAMERON does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron.
How long did it take for you to make this? And would this be easy for a beginner (who has no experience but can’t get the dress in time for Halloween?)
So this took me about a month to make but I wasn’t working on it seriously. If you work on it 5-8 hours a day you could probably finish it in a week/2weeks. I’m not 100% sure given my skill level is intermediate to advance. Can you read a pattern? There is a titanic pattern by simplicity that you can purchase to make a less accurate swim dress. I think this dress would be great for a beginner because it’s probably the easiest dress from the titanic to make. However there are a lot of little strategic things like the sash, the lace, the beading, the multiple skirts, the sleeves.
can you name all the exact colors and what are those things that help make the dress cut out like..I dont know what they are called but it was use in the bodice? Pls answer and i love this video !!
@@CarolineElizabethMartin thank you so much I really appreciate the help but if you don’t mind me asking is the skirts gathered to give them extra volume and is there a train on the dress
@@Austinrr27 yes they are lightly gathered. it's really important to gather them evenly in order to prevent puckering in any one area. there's not really a train, it's more like the piece of fabric from the sash closing the back and is quite long, so it acts like a train.
Apparently Deborah Scott (who was the costume designer) called it the water dress. In the public consciousness it’s known as the swim dress or sinking dress because it was worn during the scene where rose is wading through water much of the time and the boat is sinking.
Hi Jake, many Titanic fans refer to this costume as the swim dress. This costume models a 1910s tea dress. Pajamas of the time were usually roomy, white cotton or linen night gowns.
The dress is heavenly. I also love the Titanic movie and Rose's costumes in particular.
Thank you Susan 💕
This dress is beautiful, it looks like an angelic dress, it was one of my favorites in the movie, thank you so much for recreating it ❤❤

OMG same! I was obsessed with the costumes ever since I saw the movie in 2001 and the swim dress is one of the top favorites
You’re so right about it being a gateway. Usually 90s period pieces are awful for historical accuracy but Titanic did almost everything correctly!
